Re: Out-of-staters
When I interviewed at UNC, the admissions office said something like ~ 500 more apps were received than normal (probably most from out of state people). And yes, they were interviewing out of state people in November. It looks like it is going to be a tough year for out of state people if they have ~ 500 more to consider. Kust like the Yukon gold rush, a ton of people are applying to professional schools (law, med, pharm, nursing).
Re: DND letter
If you interviewed around Nov, then you should have probably received one. I read through last years thread, and it seems that those that did not receive the letter were eventually rejected in April. You can read last years thread if you want (I posted the link on p. 29 of this thread). I also know people at UNC who interviewed three wks before me and did not receive the letter. We will not have a definite answer on this hypothesis until April when business is finally done. The batch of DND was sent out the last week of December and received (depending on location and sent to permanent address) around Jan. 4. The next batch will probably go out Feb. I think this letter is sent out approx. 6 - 8 wks after the interview. Again, this is just a hypothesis. I wonder if they are going to send out anymore given that postage went up two cents
Re: UNC acceptance pattern
The aforementioned influx of extra apps may have made the adcom more conservative this year. According to the data (people I have talked to), UNC has targeted primarily URM (which does not include Chinese and Japanese) and just outstanding applicants (MCAT over 36, great ECs, etc.).
If your domicile is in Wake or Mecklenburg County, you might be waiting more than people in other counties. I predict that UNC will be up to its old tricks like in undergrad admissions of "county padding." Most of the tax base and population in the state resides in Wake and Meck counties. If you look at the UNC pharmacy school admissions and undergrad admissions, you'll notice a consistent pattern for admissions by county. Bet the med school does this too. Gotta please the constituents (taxpayers!).
