Last I heard that UNC accepts 180 for 160 spots. Schools will do this because they know there have never been less than 20 people decline an acceptance. As a result, only after 20 have dropped does the waitlist start to move. Obviously this makes for very little waitlist movement (i.e. less last minute scrambling for UNC) which is in the best interest of the admissions office (although not in your best interest). I would not be surprised if the number 6 (for in-staters) is accurate. The OOS list will move quite a bit more since OOS acceptees at UNC a much more likely to get into a top 10 school (which may tempt them with more name recognition or scholarship money).

i wonder: do you think that interviewing on the v. last day of UNC's season as an OOS played any role in my chances for being accepted? they wouldn't have interviewed me if they'd already filled their OOS spots, would they?

I think the 180 accept for 160 spots came from the MSAR somewhere. Last year's thread only had 1 in-stater accepted after being waitlist. The huge problem this year will be that the equilibrium of applicants between schools with largely be affected by an increasingly harsh financial environment (higher interest rate lead to problems on unsubsidized loans, also there is high consumer debt and higher debt for recent college grads than previously)... so cheap schools like UNC should have a high retention rate when they accept somebody. And it's not like UNC is a shabby school either. They get their students matched well.

Sheepunite RE: oos interview on last day

I'm sure it played a role... there was an OOS at my interview in Nov and they said they received 500 more apps than normal this year (don't know if purely OOS). Given that they do operate on rolling admissions, I think it would be reasonable to surmise that yes a late interview could be a disadvantage. From the data on this thread, it looks like the class was basically full in March. They waited until April to see how many would drop and then waitlisted/rejected accordingly.

But again, like i61164 said, you probably have a better chance than us in-staters on the waitlist. However, everything does remain to be seen.

They told us last year that they received many more apps than normal. It's starting to sound like an excuse for their inefficient processing. They need to either make the secondary on-line, make the secondary more difficult to deter half-hearted applicants, offer fewer interviews, or some combination of these things. The could easily fill their class with high quality applicants with a lot less effort on their part. I doubt that anyone is pleased with their process.

thanks for the feedback.
the admissions dude i spoke with suggested that the in-state waitlist moves faster than the OOS list. if this is true, i assume it's b/c OOS UNC spots are coveted and primarily b/c the school kicks ass in primary care. if that's more likely to be the orientation of the OOS applicant, then i could see why the OOS waitlist wouldn't move much, relative to the in-state list.

I'm surprised to hear that. I've always had in my mind the OOS people would get the most movement. I think NC'ers would value that cheap tuition for such a good school.

apparently, NC residency is easy to obtain, and most OOS are able to secure it after their first year.

I think this statement is correct. . . . maybe ask seethrew? However, I don't think it explains why the oos waitlist would move less than the instate list.

I am so fvkin' pissed at UNC.

seethrew lived in NC during the year she applied to med school. So she got residency in May of last year, even though she was considered OOS as far as the application process and the waitlist was concerned. She had family in NC so she wasn't just an out of stater who wanted to move here for in-state tuition purposes.

Hope there's a lot of waitlist movement for in-staters in a few weeks! :luck:

Anyone else want to cast a vote for when and where the meetup should be?

one of my student guides was an OOS-er, and all three guides were emphatic about how easy it is for 1st-years to gain residency, unless "they're stupid or something and don't apply for it."

Can anyone approximate the number of applicants on the waitlist and the chances of getting in if you're in the top third? I think I read a previous post where someone was at the bottom of the top third last year and was accepted in July.

Anecdotally, I know of a couple of people that were told they were around 100th on the waitlist that got in last year. Good luck.

Does this mean you've somehow gotten them to tell you where you are ranked on the list? I keep getting told that "the waiting list is not ranked" when I call.

Yeah, I'm wary of even trying to ask UNC about WL ranking because I'd expect a similar non-informative answer.

I guess I shall just wait and twiddle my thumbs ... or I can just go ahead and dream about my nice vacation to England and Scotland so I don't have to think about the whole thing, at least for a little bit 😀

medpro and I61164 are talking about Wake's waitlist.

Vincir, I was also wondering if there is any point in calling about the UNC waitlist ranking. If I do, it will probably be sometime around May 15th. I would think you need to somehow communicate with Dr. Hoole. I doubt Lisa and the other folks answering the phone would know much about our rank. Even if they do - they aren't going to be in a position to tell us much.

Have you called recently? I was posting for a friend who called on Friday.

Does Wake Forest tell you where you are on the waitlist if you call?

Oooo, quite exciting (or not, I suppose). I'll try again Monday! Thanks for the info.

WAIT!! So the Wake admin office will tell you which third of the waitlist you are assigned to?

UNC-or-BUST, 5/27 or 6/3
mustangsally65: 5/27 or 6/3
vincir: 5/27 or 6/3 (doesn't really matter as I live here)
Dr. Giggles: 5/27 or 6/3 (but very flexible, also live here)

here's the list for the meet in CH. I vote for 6/3 and since everyone else seems to be ambivalent I'll make a decision unless someone else tells me otherwise.

I'm thinking about posting a thread in the Lounge about this meetup. Feel free to visit it there!

Sounds good to me - I'll check if there is anything fun going on around town in Chapel Hill or Carrboro that night for after Wine Bar. Post a link to the new thread if you make one so we'll have an easy way to find it, if you like.

Here's the link. I hope a lot of peeps from this thread can make it. Come on guys, let us know if you're coming!

Is it too late to reply about the meetup? I vote for not-6/3 because that's the date of my high school's graduation and I'm kind of required to go. Stupid-teaching-high-school-science-grumble-grumble.

BUT

if I'm in the minority and the meetup is in the evening (ie 6-ish) then I'll probably be able to make it. I look forward to meeting everyone 🙂

Last year people were able to find out. I think you have to call and speak to Irene Tise directly (336) 716-2883.

What do you teach? I spent the past year teaching HS Chemistry... I knew what I was getting into, but still....

I think we can change the date. Should we move it to the last week of May or the next week in June? Just let me know.

Awesomeee info, but who is gonna be the first to try it out???? 😕

She isn't in the office yet this morning, but I'm going to call back within the next hour. Need closure!

Well that was fairly informative. She said I'm in the "top half" and that it "could go either way," depending of course on how many withdraw. I get a feeling though that they're more inclined to err on overestimating my prospects than on underestimating them. But it's worth making that call.

I'd be very surprised if they would overestimate your chances (even if they didn't want to give bad news over the phone). Schools play things extremely close to the vest and I don't think they want to create false hope or misinformation.

I assume you wrote a LOI if you're in the top half?

Wrote 2 letters of interest/updates, but sent the LOI to another school.

I called this afternoon and after some beating around the bush she told me my standing... It really sounded like she was trying to let me down easy, but the news was good!! 👍 👍 Considering the time she had to spend on the phone and not knowing if I called her at a bad time, I would prefer to have emailed her (but I didn't have the address).

The waiting is a bit easier now... 👍

congrats. did you write a letter of interest/intent?

any indication when the list starts to move?

Hey,
Just curious, when you say she told you your standing on the waitlist, did she give you an actual number, or a fraction type standing, like top half, or top third or something of that nature. Just seeing if it is worth it to make the phone call, I am really curious, but I dont really want to annoy them you know. Also did u call the admissions office or the number for Trise, that was listed on the forum?
thanks,
Kevin P.

Just got off the phone with Irene, who didn't seem extremely happy at first to have another one of these phone calls, but then was really nice when we were talking.

She kept saying that my position "looks good", saying that it really depends on how many people withdraw, and that today's their deadline. Then she told me what 'fraction' I am in. However, she also said that files will still be reviewed from here on out, so there isn't a solid list.

And at the end, she asked me if I was on any other waitlists. I froze for a second, and then said, "No, actually, I'm just hoping for Wake!" really excitedly. After I hung up, I realized that while I was trying to sound enthusiastic and that it was the only school for me, I think it ended up just sounding desperate because no other schools want me... dammit!

She told me the fraction and asked me about the other acceptances as well. I told her that I am holding an acceptance to MUSC, but I would rather go to Wake. I think if you approach it right, she won't be annoyed. Just be mindful and respectful of her duties... I called the number listed here...

I wrote a letter of interest before the adcom mtg. Then another after the waitlist that was more a letter of intent. She didn't indicate any specific movement timeframe, but mentioned May 1st as their deadline, May 15th as the national deadline (sounded like this would bring bigger mvmt) and equivocated a lot about when things would happen...

Just knowing something is nice, though!

Good luck you guys. There will be waitlist movement up until the end of July. You could even get some movement during orientation week. You would think that everyone has to drop down to 1 acceptance by May 15, but that is not the reality. People will hold onto more than one because they are still waiting for financial aid offers. Some schools are strict about not letting you hold more than one after 5/15, but most understand if you waiting for FA offers (including Wake). Also, there is the trickle down effect. For example someone gets off the waitlist at Harvard, so they drop UPenn, a UPenn waitlister drops Duke, a Duke waitlister drops Emory, an Emory waitlister drops Wake, and someone gets off Wake's waitlist. The whole chain can take a long time so you can see spots open up at any time until classes start.

Rescuing this thread from oblivion.............

Well, I got a little info on the waitlist at UNC this morning and it basically confirms what others have said. Apparently UNC over-accepts the class by about 20 people, i.e. accepted 180 for a class of 160. Waitlist movement won't begin until about 20 people drop their acceptances, which sounds pretty bleak to me.

Essentially, the adcom has already put the second string in place.

Has anyone emailed or attempted to get information on a waitlist rank?

Mrs. Alston told me they are going to rank the list and they will tell you about where you are. They haven't yet, however, as they are waiting to receive our waitlist forms. She said they should have a better idea about our chances and stuff in a month. Not much movement expected on the 15th.

Still waiting.

They are going to give you your rank...?
WOW, thats a big change from last year 😀

Here's the new Chapel Hill meetup thread in the Lounge. I need some help here because I have no idea how to organize these things and I'm unfamiliar with the CH area.

If you think you can come, post in this thread and/or in the Lounge. If you have any ideas about where we can meet or what we can do, feel free to contribute as well. I'm thinking maybe 2 or 3 p.m. we could meet so that I could be in bed at a reasonable hour. 😀 I'm doing Summer MED and I'm probably going to need the rest.

We changed the date to May 27 because sweetdoc couldn't make it on June 3.

So it sounds like we have some good info on the UNC waitlist (will be ranked, will move once 20 people drop their spots, etc.) Anyone know much about the OSS waitlist for UNC (assuming its a separate list)?

Also, on a vaguely related note, withdrawing from Wake today (I'm on the waitlist), so good luck to everyone waiting to hear from them!
