Well I hadn't checked this thread in a long long time but today I peeked. My comments.

For:
Dave Med - CONGRATS. YOu are going to be a TAR HEEL, getting of the WL early and not having it be a prolonged torture is a great feeling. Good luck buddy.

JWNDUKE - Hopefully SUNY downstate works out for you or your other WL's. If not reapply again next yr. Reapplication is a finacial, mental, and emotional drain but worth it in the end if its what you really want!

DEG, formerly know as Shahbab - I talk to you alot by PM so I know how you are doing. YOu will make an excellent doctor I have no doubts and if it doesnt work out this yr hopefully it will next yr. Talk to Hoole at UNC about ur app to see what you can do to up your chances there.

Registered User - It will be a shame if you dont get into Pitt, UNC or Wake off the WL. At least you will be a doctor either way but still I am hoping one of those works out for you.

DR. Giggles - CONGRATS..Your genius not to mention niceness finally pays off. Good luck at OSU!

As for myself. I actually wound up getting into my number one choice of Cinci and couldnt be happier. I feel a little vindicated as I would have gone there over UNC anyway. Its an amazing school just like UNC (except the admissions office at UNC in my opinion is one of the worst out there) but fits my personality better. Anyway good luck to everyone!

Thanks! It would kick so much ass if we all could have gotten in to somewhere such as UNC, but we're all going to have the time of our lives wherever the long road may lead.

I guess I better hit the MCAT books again. I didn't take any course last time. I am thinking about taking a course (kaplan or TPR) this time around. Not sure if it will help me.

I have a question and hope you NC'ers can help me out. I'm currently doing my undergrad in North Carolina, and an from Illinois. I've contemplated pursuing residency here in North Carolina, as I am working, live off-campus, have moved my bank accounts here, and will be obtaining an NC license soon.

For UNC-CH, there seems to be a difference between "resident" and "resident for tuition purposes." If I obtain my NC license, I may apply to AMCAS as an NC resident, using my NC license and address. From the UNC information, I see that I will be sent a form entitled "Residency for Tuition Purposes" with my secondary application. Though I feel there's a chance I will be granted this designation (without going into too many personal details) I most likely will NOT.

My question is this:
For ADMISSIONS purposes, which type of residency designation do they use? Because they send the form with the screened secondary application, I am inclined to think I would be evaluated as an NC resident for ADMISSIONS, and then later will be declared in vs. out for tuition purposes.

I'd be fulling willing to attend UNC for one year at out-of-state rates if necessary, but first I'd just like to get in. In fact, I might even (for other financial purposes) defer one year and continue living in NC and working. This would not only allow me to make money but also to start at in-state rates.

Just called. The declaration of NC residency is "tentative" until further review of the "Residency for Tuition Purposes" form. The process is one in the same--you cannot be considered for the 140 in-state spots without the "Resident for Tuition Purposes" designation.

I am just about to leave my job at UNC-CH and I am trying to find someone to replace me. This is a great position for a Pre-med. Its a full time position working for the pediatric pulmonary department as a research tech.

Secondly, I am going to go ahead and reapply to med school for 2007, does anybody know if the schools keep your personal statements on record? do you use the same one when you reapply, my reasons for wanting to be a doctor havent changed so I wouldnt think my personal statement would but didnt know if they would know it was the same as the 06 application. ANY THOUGHTS???

The consensus seems to be that you need to make at least some changes reflecting the additional things you've done in the last year. Like everything, whether they keep your old PS or not most likely depends on the school, but I would assume that they do unless you hear differently. Adcoms want to see that you've been active in improving your application, which includes revamping your personal statement.

Good with the Wake waitlist. It seems to be the only NC school that's getting any movement whatsoever.

THey haven't accepted an out of state resident in 20 years. So the numbers aren't quite going there.

My recollection of the call is a little fuzzy, but it was from my adcom interviewer today at about 2pm, just letting me know that my name had moved to the top of the WL and they had a spot for me. I should be getting an acceptance packet pretty soon.

I was very persistent in keeping in touch through the admissions office and through emailing my adcom interviewer and Dr. Hoole. I'm not sure how much difference it will make, but if you're still waiting, I would drop Dr. Hoole a quick note to let him know you're still very interested in matriculating at Carolina this fall.

I'm going to take a couple of days to think it all through, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be a Tar Heel next year (sorry if I can't keep it moving). to everyone still waiting - hopefully there will be more good news for someone to share in the next month.

Congratulations on your UNC acceptance. I hope others get good news too even though its almost July.

I went to talk to Dr. Peden yesterday. I was really impressed that he prepared so well to advice us on improving our application. He went through our files before the meeting and took notes. During our individual meeting, he read excerpts from the reports written by four adcom members (two interviewers and two non-interviewers).

I was pleased to hear the positive things they wrote. Two negative things that was in all four reports. One was the lack of clinical experience. I don't have any disagreement with that. I have shadowed at a primary care clinic and I am also part of a team that is trying to establish a hemodialysis center in Bangladesh. Its a part of Bangladesh where there is no such facility right now. It was a mistake on my part to think that thats medical experience. Its a huge project in terms of money and management. But I do agree it doesn't give me clinical exposure. I am starting two volunteer work from tomorrow to improve on that.

Anyways, I want opinion from anyone on the second thing that kept popping up in all four reports. The concern is with me not fitting well with the mission of the school.

I have tried my best to explain that I have been living in the U.S since 1992, and in NC since 1997. We have a house, my daughter was born here, we have all the intentions to live in NC. I declined a very good job offer from Minnesota to stay in NC. If I go to a out of state school, I want to come to NC and serve NC.

This issue is a bit frustrating because even though I was not born and raised in NC.. I really love this place and I want to practice here in future. I am more sure about that than what field of medicine I want to get into even though I really like primary care.

Because of the type of job (Semiconductor Industry), I cannot just move to anywhere in NC and prove that I love living in rural NC or such. In the end, it seems to me that it comes down to my words..whether they believe me. I love small town atmosphere. Another thing, I feel very strongly about is - if I go to ECU or UNC..tax payers are paying for my education. In a way, I feel very obligated to give something back in return.

Sorry for the long post. But I would appreciate any comment here or PM. I am just afraid that even if I get additional clinical experience, do better in MCAT, I might be stuck with the notion that I do not fit well with the mission of the school.

It's very political, 2DEG. Are you going to apply again? 45% of their class are typically re-applicants. Also, I would suggest you shadow primary care providers, such as FM or peds, since that fits in nicely with their mission. You're not expected to move to an underserved area of NC just to prove something.

I'm not going to take a day off work to speak with Dr. Peden (he was one of my interviewers, too), but I am going to have a phone interview with him at the end of July. I, too, am curious to hear what he has to say to me.
