The power's coming back up, it's on for the most part in the Central West End for those of you who will be living near there. There are still power lines down in some places (a friend in Maplewood isn't allowed to leave her street b/c of live wires tonight), and now it's a lot of tree damage and branches to be cleaned up. Should be looking pretty good by next week.

I've almost forgotten what thunder is like. It virtually never thunderstorms in southern california.

Get ready to jump out of your bed, due to some fierce tunderstorms. That what happened to me, and I am super heavy sleeper. 😴

I called the financial aid office today and got a message saying they were closed due to the weather. Maybe one of you guys has an answer to my questions. I was trying to find out how our loans are dispensed. Does it go into a student account or into our bank account? If you have loans are you able to pay tuition with a credit card?

I thought it goes to your bank account but don't quote me on that.

I remember some wicked thunderstorms when I grew up in Indiana. California only has earthquakes. =P

Actually, I think it goes to a student account, and then after tuition and fees have been deducted, they write you a check for what's left over. I'm pretty sure about the check part anyway...

BTW, thunderstorms here are pretty scary. They roll in very quickly, the wind is strong, the sky sometimes gets very odd looking. On the radio, I even heard that some people reported seeing "upside down" rain - wierd. Oh, and tornadoes happen. :scared:

I used to not even be phased by hurricanes (I grew up in New Orleans). Then I moved here (pre-Katrina) and I've developed a strong awareness of weather.

I can handle the thunderstorms, but tornadoes? I would be scared out of my mind if i saw a tornado.

I haven't seen a tornado since I lived in Indiana. They are indeed scary as hell.

Federal loans always go the school and they write you a check. Private loans may be disbursed to you and you do what you want with them.

Thanks. Do you know if the school gives you a check for the full amount or do they subtract tuition first?

It's 112 degrees outside today. I'm about to lose my MIND.

Dude, I feel ya on that one! My pool even feels like warm bath water...not even refreshing! But where I'm from, at least it's "dry heat". I don't know what I'll do in St. Louis where the humidity is off the charts! And here's hoping for some waitlist movement--I think the office has been closed the past couple of days--so hopefully when it gets back up and running, the waitlist will as well! Buena suerte! :luck:

It's dry heat here too . I live about an hour east of LA. It's pretty much a desert. At this point I am actually looking forward to 85+ degree humid temps in St. Louis.

I'm hoping for WL movement as well! :luck: I'm in AZ... it was like 115 today, and my pool is about 95... at least there is a little breeze today 🙄

We got the same temp here (115) in Valencia, CA (so cal) where I live too...for the first time I can remember.

Alolove, did you call and find out about the office being closed? Hmmm...if they open next week, they'd better have a handful of acceptances ready to hand out to us waitlisters 😀 . Basically, I sometimes forget that I'm waitlisted at SLU due to almost no movement there. I know that often enough many people that are not on SDN may get off the waitlist but we do not hear about them. SLU's reputation for having a large numbers of people getting off the waitlist in the past years, however, has to be based on many SDN people getting off the waitlist. So, I hope (we all hope), that that same statistic comes true this year. When is the first day of class anyways?

Ps. sorry for disturbing the whole welcome week rafting conversation. I'm waiting for the day that I can a part of that conversation and other SLU talks. :luck: :luck:

I called on Thursday and the recording said that they were closed due to power outages. I called on Friday and I still got their voicemail all day, so I figured that they were out of the office that day as well. I know someone who was chatting with a financial aid advisor and for some reason they got on the topic of the wl. This person said that they are still accepting people every day...but that's from a financial aid person, not someone on admissions, so I don't know how credible it is. The white coat ceremony is on august 6th and the first day of class is on the 14th. And for everyone who is super hot right now (you can take that literally or metaphorically if you'd like 🙂 ) taking out the garden hose is a great and cooler alternative to the spa-like waters of the swimming pool. Might I also suggest busting out the slip n' slide?! Here's to a cooler tomorrow--cheers!

They subtract tuition first. I wish they gave me the whole check. I would use the float time to the last sec!

kitt9000-

I went went to the The Master's College in Santa Clarita/Newhall.

I'll probably be in St. Louis by the end of this week or so.

Some of my old childhood buddies are visiting me some time before school starts. It's gonna be weird an nostalgic as hell but it'll be great! It's so crazy to move across the country during high school. Because now you have so many random circles of friends who are now spread across the country. But, it's always great to have an opportunity to see them again. 😀

Hey guys! Quick question, are you bringing your undergraduate text books? Gchem, Ochem, biochem, physics, stats, etc...do you think we might use any of these? I just don't want to pack them (because they're insanely heavy) if I don't have to! Let me know! Thanks!

I sure as heck wouldn't... they are heavy and your shelves will soon be loaded down w/ med school texts! The only text I'm brining w/ me is my human nutrition textbook, simply b/c it's good to have around for reference w/ nutrition facts, ect...oh, and I will probably bring my anatomy coloring book 😀 I wouldn't bring bio, chem, o-chem and physics texts if I were you, maybe some current students can shed some more light on this...but I think those will be insignificant compared to the mountains of lovely texts you'll be getting in a few weeks, if you choose to buy them, that is 😳

Some of them. No O-chem or physics. Just general biology, biochem, physiology, cell bio, and neurology. I think my cell bio book is the same one we will use in med school (probably newer edition). I don't know if we have a stats class to take but if we do the stats book should be useful too.

Good lord my undergrad bio books are from who knows how many years ago. If I really need to get a text for those I'll probably get a new one.

heh...yeah, mine are from 4 years ago... 🙄

Forget about bring your undergrad or even grad textbooks they are worthless in Med school. O chem is never touched in all of our first year. Maybe the only exception is Cell Bio. You are going have to buy textbooks that the prof. here wants. When you do buy you can buy from half.com or amazon.com.

Halleulia! A break from o-chem! 🙂 That makes this girl quite happy!

I'm definitely bringing my Radiation Biology, Physics of Radiation Therapy, and Physics of Diagnostic Imaging books with me from grad school, since they might be relevant to my future interests. Plus, they're badass in an incredibly nerdy way. :meanie:

But I am not even gonna touch my organic, biochem, cell bio, genetics, or molecular bio textbooks! I swear if I see another acyl- or alkyl- or diene I'm gonna shoot something.

Hah, I was wondering about what books to bring as well. I think I will bring my pharmacology text (my major) and possible my anatomy book. Perhaps then I won't have to buy another anatomy book.

All the stuff that appeared on the MCAT though, forget it. We won't be doing any Friedel-Crafts reactions so I think we are safe.

When driving out from CA should I take 8O all the way through Nebraska and cut down to Kansas City to get on 70 or should I cut down to 70 at Denver and drive through Kansas? Google says to go one way Yahoo says to go another.

I am a member of AAA. I am going through Nebraska.

I hope you both have superb air conditioning in your cars! Safe and happy travels!

Where are you comin' from?

If you're from either California or Indiana I'd say we could all get together and bash on KFC and southerners. But, if you're not, then I will have to say good DAY to you, ma'am! 😡

Haha, j/k, all of you have a safe trip to St. Louis! Let's not have anyone not join the class due to traveling problems. =P

I'm comin' from Cali, but I'll be flying out there on the 4th...no across the country driving for this chica...I'm staying here as long as I can! I'm going to miss my home (but I know I'll learn to love it out there as well...at least I hope so!)

OMG... it is SOOOOO boring driving through Nebraska!! Man, everytime I have to drive through there I try to make it through the whole state in a couple of hours w/o stopping, there's just nothing to look at! 🙄

Is Nebraska really that much different than Kansas? Will I be looking at wheat fields instead of corn? My dad is going to be driving out with me to help with the driving. He had already made hotel reservations in Lincoln, Nebraska so that is the way we will be going. Yes, I have good air conditioning in my car. I'm finishing packing up the car tonight and I'm leaving early tomorrow morning. I hope you guys on the waitlist hear something soon. See you in St. Louis.

First off, it looked like cutting down to I-70 in Denver was shorter mostly because it was straighter than I-80 through nebraska. Also, the highway that connects the 80 to the 70 (highway 2?) looks a lot smaller and slower speed. Then I tried both in google and yahoo from sonoma, ca to 63104 and both said to cut down to 70 at Denver. I guess I would do that. Plus driving a little longer through colorado may be better than that distance in nebraska 🙂

I am coming from southern cali and am going to do the trip in 2 days (kinda pushin it). I'm gonna make one stop in amarillo, tx after the first day then trek up to st. louis the following day. Air conditioning will be an absolute must.

Also, I hear the cops in these western/midwestern states don't let u drive like they do in CA. My friend got a ticket doin 70 in a 65 on I-40 so keep it on cruise or get a radar detector (the latter for me 🙂

Well the only reason I'm driving out there is because I need my car there! And I'll be darned if I pay $1300 to ship it!

See ya there.

nice, thats when im flying in.

Hello everyone, I was accepted to SLU in January and have been trolling this thread since. Anyway, I thought this would be a good way to get to know some of my future classmates. I am all for hanging out before the white coat ceremony. I'm flying in on Thursday, 8/3 from Northern California.

I got this studio at the Teresa Park Lofts, anyone else living there?

Also Pewl, what kind of car are you driving over? I'm having my car shipped for $900, but it's a small coupe. I guess if it was an SUV it would be more.

I have an eclipse. I'm actually in Gallup, NM right now. This hotel has wireless! My parents also drove a Penske truck with me, so I'll have all my stuff with me. They have to fly to a conference in Florida at the end of the wek but ground is always the cheapest way to move. =P

I'm living by the central west end.

Can't wait to see you guys during Orientation week, I'll be there on Friday when you meet the various student groups.

It depends on where you are coming from. I have driven from CA to STL/STL to CA five times now and I am about to make my sixth trip back next week. From Northen CA (from Sac) the best way is the 80 all the way and cut down to KC then take the 70 into STL. We drove to Park City (it took 9 hours or so), then drove 18 hours straight to KC, then KC is only 4 hours from STL. We did this with a 3 year old and a dog. From Southern CA (from Pasadena) 210 to the 15 to the 40 to the 44. It is a straight shot across nothingness. With a pregnant wife, a 3 year old, and my dog it took us 3 days. I drove it childless in 1.5 days but I could have made it one. This last trip we took a detour and went thru Denver (Vegas, then to So CA, then back up to Northern CA), I wouldn't recommend the Denver route. Travel safely. PM if you have any questions.
