This may be a stupid question but...what's SLU's grading system? 😛 (I know I know, how dare I have gone to the interview and everything and not even known this?)

Honors- top 15-20% of the course
Near Honors- next 5%
Pass- everyone else
Fail- performance 2 standard deviations below the mean

Contrary to what it may seem, this is NOT equivalent to A,B,C,F grading. The majority of people get pass (75-80% of the class) at SLU, whereas at schools with letter grading, the majority of people do not get C's (they get A's and B's). And you really have to go out of your way to not study to score 2 SD's below the mean and fail.

I really like this grading system. It is basically a pass/fail system that awards the few people who work really hard and do well enough for honors. However, since the vast majority of people pass, it in no way makes passing seem mediocre.

Also, people are ranked for each course, which is kept on record at the registrar but not recorded on your official transcript. So when dean's letters go out to residency programs your fourth year, your dean will know how well you have done in relation to the class. Therefore, if you are consistently in the top 30-50% of the class but not doing well enough for honors, this will be indicated in your dean's letter, so residency programs cant assume that you are at the bottom of the class based on the fact that you only passed all your classes.

The SLU thread has been resurrected! (In other words, I dug it out of the depths of SDN.) I posted this on another SLU-thread started by someone else, but I'll repost it here for those of you who are wondering about the credit-report deal regarding your acceptance e-mail (I just prefer all the SLU talk to be on the same thread for simplicity's sake):

I called the financial aid office, and they said they DON'T want a copy of your credit report; the report is for YOURSELF. They recommend you get one and take a gander at your credit rating, just to be sure everything is on the up-and-up. If you've got bad credit, it's better to find out right now and do something about it while you still can. If your credit is still shady by August 2006, the financial aid office may have trouble getting you the loans/grants you need, and then you will be one sad student.

Thanks for bringing it back.

whats the turnaround for SLU? interviewed there nov 29....

Oh god, not this again 😛 Ha ha, sorry man, don't mean to be rude, but it's just a really "popular" question. Turnaround is 4-6 weeks! I should sticky this! I was accepted a little more than 5 weeks after my interview, so I guess they are serious about that timeframe. Have patience!

Yea you're probably referring to me. I don't know what was up with that...when I interviewed the guy told me I "should be optimistic" and that I would hear back "in a few weeks." Int. 11/15, Acc. 12/2. I don't know why it was faster than normal--maybe my interviewer wrote up my report quickly and got it in right before an adcom. meeting? As far as I know others have been hearing back in the 4-6 week timeframe that the other guy mentioned.

WOO HOO!! I just got the acceptance email from SLU today. I got it almost exactly 1 month after my interview. 😀

Congratulation! 👍 See, I told you all regarding the timeframe! They're very punctual about the notifications. If they say 4-6 weeks, they mean 4-6 weeks. The rest of you be patient!

Thanks, this is probably my best Christmas present ever. Well, almost. Nothing will beat that Fireball Island board game I got in 1st grade =D

Congrats Pewl. That makes a nice Christmas present. How often these acceptance emails go out? I interviewed 4 days after Pewl and am wondering if I might be able to expect something soon.

Woohoo! 2nd year around. Only applied to 2 schools, Non-trad, etc.!!! I'm gonna be a doctor! Woohoo!

BTW. for those of you who would like to know, I interviewed 11/22.

Woohoo!

Props to everyone who got in this "second round"! 👍 It does seem that there was a "batch" of acceptances back in October, then nothing for awhile, and now people are getting acceptances again.

Sure did. I got home late from work and found out at about 5. It was a great day! My husband learned that his division of the company is branching out to form a new company. My son came home after spending 3 weeks at his grandparents. And I received the Congratulations email from SLU. Wow!

Is there anyone who interviewed with Dr. Furman during the San Francisco regional interviews Nov. 18-21 that has heard anything yet?

Holy crap it's been a long time since anyone posted on this.

Hey, has anyone gotten any supplemental forms from the financial aid office? I completed my FAFSA in early February, just after I submitted my taxes. I've already gotten a refund, but SLU still hasn't sent any supplemental forms. They aren't planning on doling out financial aid packages until April. But they did say that they have some verification forms, etc. that they need. I've asked about it 3 times....

Anyone?

I haven't gotton any supplemental forms. What makes you think that SLU has them? I sent in a copy of my credit report with my check. Maybe that is what you are thinking of?

No,

I finally got the email and forms today after badgering them for a while. PM me and I'll send the link. It's a dependent status verification form. Also, they have instructions about tax forms to send in...

I found out last week I'm an alternate @ SLU... I asked the adm office for more info and they won't tell me much... they said the alternate list is numbered, but will not reveal my number nor do I know how many others may be in my position... anyone have any insight? Thanks
:luck:

I've heard that the waitlist moves a lot!! So that's good news! Did you have a regional interview or did you visit the school? What did you like/dislike about the school if you visited it?

Just got an interview invite to SLU by email this morning. I'm pretty excited, but not too optimistic since its so late in the season. This really came as a surprise I had already given up all hope for more invites!

Does anyone know if there is a second look weekend for SLU?

They require 1) A copy of your 2005 tax return, W2s (with schedules), 2) The same stuff as #1 for both parents (even though you will be considered independent for fed aid purposes, you still gotta put mom&dad's info down for SLU institutional aid), and 3) Two pdf forms which you can get off of SLU's website.

Call the Fin Aid office, tell them you want to get everything they need turned in, and have them send you "the e-mail" which went out to continuing students--continuing students had to fill out the exact same stuff as new students, so the same exact docs are required. The lady I spoke with e-mailed me the info on what I needed to turn in ASAP.

Good luck!

who here is currently planning on attending SLU?

I am planning on attending SLU. I loved it there! 🙂

Anyone know the mode via SLU notifies of rejections, waitlists, acceptances (post interview)...e-mail, snail-mail, a horse's head?

i was accepted via email...the subject line said "congratulations"

Thanks. What about the other two undesirable cases: waitlist and rejection...how do those go out (post interview).

anyone accepted to SLU and TULANE or GW? IF so where will you go and why? Feel free to give an opinion even if not!

thats a tough choice...Tulane is a great school but its future is pretty uncertain despite what they tell you...they also lost alot of faculty and its original drawing point for me was their teaching hospital (forgot what its called) but that got shut down after katrina...plus, its in NO and I personally cant take the humidity in the summers...GW is also a really cool school, location is awesome and I loved the year i spent in DC...the med school itself is also really nice and new, plus the curriculum is straight P or NP (no honors, high pass, pass, etc) so its a very friendly atmosphere among the students...and finally, theres SLU which Im pretty sure ill be attending next year...its not in a nice location of stl but at the same time, its where the patients are going to be...plus the new research building that should be finished when classes start this fall will probably attract alot of new researchers the next few years and hence, rise in the usnews rankings if youre into that kinda thing...finally, if your into local reputation, GW is overshadowed by Gtown (despite both being good schools, Gtown has a namesake in the area) and SLU is overshadwed by Wash U (even though SLU has a good rep in the midwest) but Tulane is probably the school to be at in NO...personally, i think it would be a toss up between those 3 schools

thanks for the response Huang. I actually have no idea how to order these schools either. I am actually leaning to SLU right now...but its odd because everone seems so disenchanted with it. Traditionally, Tulane is considered the best, then probably SLU, then GW. But GW offers the best living situation, followed now by SLU, with Tulane in a disdant third. They are all terribly expensive. If this were a year ago I would have said Tulane, but I hate the idea of a 200K+ debt and a disorganized education. You are also right about the overshadowing. Many have never even heard of SLU. My coworkers all thought I got into washU until I corrected them. I just feel like SLU, which has been around nearly 2 hundred years, actually has it's **** together the most out of all 3. GW just came off like a little bit of smoke and mirrors along with some hipe, without any area of excellence other than maybe its facilities.

Where do you find SDN rankings?

I really liked the affiliation with the local hospitals, the atmospehere was great, all of the students seemed to love it and I just felt very comfortable there! I'm hoping my position moves on the waitlist, hard to say seeing as how I don't know what number I am or anything. Glad to hear I still have a chance! lol :luck:
I guess the only thing I disliked was St. Louis itself, I come from a large urban area (phx, not as built up, mind you) but I found it to be more dirty (not the school, the city!) There were so many positives though that outweighed the few negatives so I am not worried at all if I do end up going there! May 15th is less than a month away when others can withdraw and give me a chance to get in!

Thanks for your response 😳

That sounds great!! SLU is my only acceptance and I hear great things about it! The curriculum at SLU is awesome! I had a regional interview so I'm still going to visit the school and the city to see if I like the atmosphere or if I should stay on my waitlists. I'd be more than happy to go to SLU! Thanks for your response and good luck!!! Send a letter of intent!! Let us know what happens!

I'll be there!! We're gonna have a great time.. looking forward to meeting everyone

I hate to be like this, but I really think that if you have other acceptances outside of Tulane, for the love of all that is holy take them. TU was originally one of my top choices, but the complete disorganization of the school post-Katrina (some of which is understandable) and lack of any sort of clear message about the clinical years is very, very alarming to me. Too much of a risk when you have other choices, you know?

I was recently offered an interview at SLU for May 8th (the 2nd to last day of interviews) and I took it. I am fortunate enough to be accepted to schools that I would love to go to, but I figured I would give SLU a shot. Anyone know if it is for the waitlist at this point? I guess it doesn't matter since it is 7 days before the big scramble of may 15, huh?

I was there Apr10, they said they are interviewing for acceptances all the way through the end. People are declining their spots already and the incoming class size is 170 or 175 , not 150 or whatever it says in MSAR.
I really liked St. Louis (the city) and I will be going to SLU over Drexel if they accept me. Good luck to everybody waiting :luck: !

SLU is actually my second choice (I am also "hold listed=waitlisted" at PSU) I *loved* SLU, but I am *IN LOVE* with Penn State, so I am writing a LOI to them. I guess I figured it wouldn't be appropriate to write a LOI to SLU of they are not #1... any other opinions on that one? 🙄 what if I wrote a letter stating I am still very interested, without saying "#1 choice," would that be appropriate? 😉
