I don't think that was me, I think that was the late night delirium setting in. I find that when I'm up tell 3,4,5am studying that many things become very hilarious.

Not only is my brand new carpet defective (and will be replaced in 3 weeks - I have to empty the house of furniture AGAIN in the meantime the defective carpet is just laying on the floor and not installed), but I broke the truck yesterday and got stranded at the grocery store with hubby skiing with the kids 2 hours away. Truck's still at the store (but I think it just needs a fusible link replaced - still have to get it towed home tomorrow). I smashed my hand on the countertop 'cuz I was so upset about the truck I wasn't paying attention to where I was walking and I have this HUGE hematoma between my first and second metacarpal that hurts like a mf. Hubby's stressin' 'cuz he doesn't know where to look for a job, I'm stressin' 'cuz we need to arrange health insurance for the moving period, and I'm still waiting for VCU (and will gladly continue to wait if it means I get a "c'mon down!" holler soon).

I have way too much stress in my life right now. Since I can't do anything about the carpet, and I can't do anything about the truck, can't VCU just call me tonight and let me in??? please????? 🙁

ShyRem I really think you should send VCU a letter (if u havent already) about your particular situation. I know it wont necessarily change your priority score, but it will clue them in to the timeline you are following as to moving and your husband's job. Good Luck to all of us :luck: ....oh yeah, 27

Keep your head up. It sucks for all of us. I have a family too and this is killing my wife. "so where are you going for med school, uhhh we don't know yet." Sound familiar to anyone? Love it. 👎 🙁
I'm just thankfull this is my LAST time applying to schools, this is BS.

I just reply with "Somewhere", although I'd like that "Somewhere" to be VCU... C'mon show me some state school love! This five month perma hold has been killing my spirit lately 🙁
 
A good night's sleep is pretty darn wonderful. The upstairs toilet works now and the truck just got towed into the front yard. It still doesn't work, but at least it's home.

*sigh* My life should be on a soap opera. I think we really should make a TV sitcom about med school applicants - but we'd probably be the only ones watching. :laugh:

One thing at a time, right? Right! ok.... time for breakfast.

The irony of course being that I haven't been contributing for a few days, but with good reason (broke up with my boyfriend, moved, visited Georgetown to see how attractive my back-up plan for next year is, and considered the possibility of quitting my job and moving to Guatemala to teach for the summer).

Que complicada es la vida.
 
Hey, this is a question for everyone. This VCU central thread is easily one of the most active on SDN. Now I applied to VCU but it looks like I won't be offered an interview, and thus I will probably never get a good look at their program...

So, I wanted to ask you guys what made you love the school so very much?

Well, for me, I felt that they were one of the VERY few schools that truly considered me as a whole. I mean, some schools didn't even care to ask anything about you in the secondary. Kind of like "check please!".
So, as a non-trad, I appreciated the opportunity to put my best foot forward.

Also, on interview day, I really liked the proximity of everything. It was a very friendly place, and the interview was great. MCV hospital looked first rate to me, and I like having a teaching hospital so closely affiliated with the med school. And the block style curriculum sounds like a very good way for me to learn.

Being from Detroit, Richmond seemed like a great place and a nice change.

Also, I just have a feel that it's a pretty well rounded student body, which is important to me.(just look at all the yahoos on this thread!!)
 
I have to say the curriculum structure was particularly appealing. Also one of the BRS authors teaches there. The hospital was pretty good, they're expanding it now for more room. The area is great for a family, lots of job opportunities for my husband, the way they looked at my ENTIRE application - not just my numbers. They're super nice there, too, and very upfront and approachable.

If you want a #1 reason, tho, I'd have to say the curriculum structure and style.

around 4 hrs class everyday, comprehensive medical center with impressive hospital, very diverse patient population (this guarantess at least a handful of cases that you only find in the corners of textbooks) with particular emphasis on indigent patients, great match, friendly and diverse student body (in cultures and experiences), affiliated with VCU undergrad so med students have access to those resources as well....also does anyone know if out-of-staters can establish residency after the first yr so we can get in-state tuition??? now this would be the icing on the cake

Also Congratulations you guys for being a part of one of "the most active threads on SDN" 👍

No, you can't establish residency in VA after a year, it's pretty hard to get residency in that state, have to marry someone.

Nope. Dr. Heldberg made this quite clear on the day I interviewed. OOS = big $$$ for all four years.

I got grilled at my EVMS interview...still liked it tho

sucks about tuition...i knew it was too good to be true
 
i'm a va resident so i know whereof i speak - you have to be employed (ie - not a student) in the state in order to establish residency. because UVa is so impressed with their own reputation (not the med school, the university in general) they've made the bar for getting residency really high. sucks for the rest of you, good for me 🙂
 
I was informed that if my spouse worked in VA for a period of 12 consecutive months before Aug 1 of each year that I could/should qualify for in-state tuition.

Well maybe that is true for married applicants at VCU. I'm really not sure. I've heard at EVMS, however, that if you're OOS, it doesn't matter what you do.
 
anyone know how much instate was? Also, Shyrem, maybe it would be worth it for some of us with families to defer a year, go to VA and work and begin the next year as a resident. If I remember right it is like an 80,000 dollar savings over the four years.
 
instate this year (possibly last year) is a little over 20K. and i think that oos is around 32K.
i believe that if you (or your spouse) works in virginia for a year, you can get residency. but yes, you would have to wait a year to apply to the school - it is my (very possibly wrong) understanding that your status can't change, so if you apply or are accepted as oos, you remain so, regardless of you or your spouse does.

No, a med student who gave us the tour is in my same situation - oos for the first year, but her husband got a job in the beginning of her MS1 year. She was told that since he was working for 12 months previous to August of her MS3 year she would get in state tuition for MS3 and MS4 years.

If that didn't happen, I bet she's pissed........

Yeah, but it costs quite a bit less to live in Richmond. Probably $10,000 less per year overall.

true...but you get what you pay for. in my opinion, the richmond area of VCU is just not even close to Foggy Bottom, DC...but how bout i try getting into school first and then I can bicker about cost of living. i gotta remember, beggars cant be choosers

Yeah definitely you should really go to GWU. Foggy Bottom, the name is enough reason for you to go there over Richmond. There is a Richmond in I bet every one of the lower 48, but Foggy Bottom, come on. Yes Jbone, I do remeber the scholarship being offered to GWU as well as EVMS. I think it might be expanding to anywhere else other than VCU, but I'll let you know when that happens. (Still waiting on the 52 mill. powerball, then everyone gets a scholarship elsewhere)

oneaat, you have it all wrong. There isn't a swamp, or malaria, only very attractive people and beautiful weather. 😉 That's why everyone needs to go there and decline their acceptances to VCU so that the bunch of us who keep this thread alive can go to our favorite school in Richmond together. 😀
