I agree. Maybe there are a fair number of people in that situation. They should definitely withdraw. Or else. :meanie:

Did anyone hear, from the admissions committee, that even though they interviewed more people this year, they tried to keep the alternate list about the same length?

Thats what I was told at my interview. This seems to be the topic of discussion today 🙂

this mass email/status update...did it just go to OOS'ers or did everyone get it? because i'm on the waitlist but i'm IS and got no update or e-mail. just checking to make sure i didn't miss anything.

I'm pretty sure you answered your own question here.

It addressed out of staters specifically.

I think schools can see on April 15 where else you have been accepted. This because schools that start prior to August 1 can demand a decision on April 15 (rather than May 15) from applicants to hold only one acceptance. If this were indeed the case then Dr. H would know where everyone has been accepted.

There was this whole debate about this a little over a month ago. This is what REL said:

"Med schools can only see acceptances while they are in effect. At this time we can only see acceptances to other schools of applicants that we have accepted at this time. Sometime in the second half of March med schools will be able to look at any applicant to their program and can only see if you have a current acceptance."

So, by now VCU (and others) should be able to see if their people on their alternate list have an acceptance somewhere else, but it sounds like they wouldn't know which school(s) have specifically accepted someone.

Hey guys. Just checkin in on my buddies. lol

Hang in there. I have a great feeling about you guys (you know who you are...). Honestly, I just do.

With all due respect to Dr. Heldberg, if I want to let this play out to see if I get an acceptance, that is my choice. I paid my money. I have been in limbo for many months and I really think the annoying thing is trying to bully me into withdrawing. So what if the admissions office has to send an additional “acceptance” email or twenty. Big deal. It's just an email.

Lots of out-of-state people have been waiting on VCU for a long time and I have no interest in withdrawing now that it is the 11th hour. If it takes them a few more weeks to fill their class, I’m sorry, but I can live with that.

Frankly, I am on enough waitlists that I don’t KNOW what my final decision will be, with or without a state school acceptance.

I think she's saying it more with respect to other applicants that are waiting. This has a significant effect on people who have families and need to move across the country in order to attend VCU. It's just another email for the medical school to send, but it is a life-altering email to the recipient.

I totally appreciate that. I have a family and will have to move as well. But on April 24th I think it is a bit premature to start pushing people to declare a specific intention towards VCU. Maybe on May 15th, but not now.

It's fine if you think there's any chance you would go to VCU if accepted, but if you already have an acceptance to a school you would prefer, then the only thing you're waiting for is an ego boost. And that's pretty selfish, IMHO.

Im sure Dr. H is using the same line of thinking that every committee uses: If this applicant is already accepted at a state school, the chances of him/her attending my institution, which is significantly more expensive, is rather slim...people choose reputation over cheaper tuition all the time, but I doubt this happens with VCU all that much. If anything, shes doing us waitlistees a favor by reminding students who are accepted to their state schools to please consider whether they really are going to want to shell out the extra thousands of dollars every yr to have the chance to attend VCU...Im assuming many of these applicants will inevitably drop their acceptance, but some hang on till the bitter end...

Hey everyone!

I didn't read this super long thread but I just wanted to say good luck to everyone here who's waiting...And for those who are currently in the shoes I was in a year ago (waitlisted and banking only VCU)...hang in there! It does suck but it'll be worth it! And you guys are lucky b/c you got to meet Dr. Heldberg before she retired. She's awesome!

If anyone has any questions, feel free to email me: [email protected]. It'll be a while before I take a look at this thread again.

Good luck to all!

I completely agree with you Vizsla. My state school already canned me and at this point, I don't care how much debt I accrue. If I get accepted from any of the waitlists I'm on, then I'll be paying OOS tuition no matter what. I'm currently holding no acceptances and consider it selfish of others, who have little to no intention of actually matriculating, to remain on the waitlist. 😡

But like you said Vizsla, some people will be pricks about it to the bitter end.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

Perhaps you got a little touchy there. The email is just reminding those who have an alternative besides VCU to withdraw if they would ultimately prefer their alternative. If you are still hoping for VCU then by all means hold on till the very end. So dont see it as they are trying to bully you into making a decision.

At the end of the day it would be really ridiculous to give out acceptance 2 days before class starts to someone with a family that lives way out in CA. I think her email was just trying to facilitate the process and help the majority of waitlisters.

Come May 15th hopefully all this uncertainty will be put to rest.

I don't see how my waiting until May 15th (when people are only supposed to be holding 1 acceptance) has much to do with a waitlister pulled into the class mid-August. VCU has almost 4 months left to seat a class. There is always that last minute add at almost every school.

I did not make the rules of this "semi-rolling" admissions process. VCU has strung me along for months. If you really want to expedite admissions, how about telling everyone their rank on the waitlist and THEN let us make some decisions.

They have held the cards all these months, and have asked most of us to wait and wait. Now they are ready to finalize a classlist and want some sort of declaration from us OOS'ers. What's 3 more weeks to a school with HUNDREDS of people on the waitlist? They have rejected virtually NO ONE post-interview. I would say, Dr. H. just have a little more patience with us. WE have waited a long time and having VCU wait a few weeks until the major waitlist movement on the 15th is not something that should annoy anyone. If this were the end of June it would be different.

I think everybody should cool off on 2010. He paid lots of $$ for primary, secondary, and interview. He/she got the right to find out if he/she got in. What is great about VCU's computerized system is that acceptances are given as fast as someone withdraws. You won't find that anywhere else. What is waiting 1 extra day gonna do to anyone? Hopefully that 70% of OOS comes off WL also means I can get of the WL and into my state school.

its just an awkward system with schools not starting at the same time. Imagine going to 2 weeks of class at one school only to leave to another school after getting off their WL. ALso I agree with 2010's suggestion that VCU should divulge the WL rank info to applicants so that they can make a better and quicker decision. I don't see why they should put someone on the WL if there is no chance at all the person may get off it. From their previous admission cycles they should be able to estimate and predict how many people typically get off the WL and size this year's WL accordingly. At least thats what I assume they did. Anyway like everyone else on the WL I just have to wait it out as I dont have an alternative.

Good luck peeps

2010FD if you are holding a state school acceptance, do you really think you would rather go to VCU? If so, then of course dont drop it...end of story. Dr H is trying to get people to distinguish between holding on to a spot due to earnest interest and holding a spot due to a desire to accrue acceptances and the glorious confidence boost that comes with it

a waitlist will ALWAYS have to be larger than needed...a school would never run the chance of screwing themselves over just to be more considerate to applicants. Im sure VCU does the best they can to guesstimate the number of people they need to have on the list but I have no doubt in my mind that they add a few more on there just to make sure they dont go through the entire list

Ah, but that can't happen. According to the AAMC's "traffic rules" once you start the orientation for one school, you can't remain under consideration anywhere else. I think this may be a recent change, as I've heard stories several years ago about people dropping one school after it started to go to another than took them off the waitlist. I'm certainly glad that can't happen anymore, because that's ridiculous.

Well thats good to know.

I will continue to assist this thread in reaching 100 pages!

someone catch me up. has anyone from this thread come off the waitlist yet?

:luck:

I think that the acceptances are still sent in batches because the last we heard about waitlist movement, several people had been accepted on the same day. Also, I remember Dr. H telling us that the online system is updated on Wednesday's at 6 PM, but that might have been just with regard to the 4 regular admissions dates. 🙂

Hey Pewl, I think I remember someone saying they had a personal scholarship waiting for you if you just take your SLU acceptance and pull out of the OOS waitlist. 😉 😀

Not really, I didn't get into U of U, and I'm only waiting for Penn State and VCU (I'll go to VCU for sure over Penn). SLU hasn't given me any correspondance since my application was complete in JULY!! They're poo heads! 😡

Out of curiousity why VCU over Penn State?

Just liked it more. A bit less rural and my interview was really great at VCU.

Let's get this thread to 100 pages.

Most e-mails VCU ever sent me have gone out at 7:02PM.
Just another useless fact.

My world revolves around useless facts, so thanks!!! 😀

Theoretically, that should help me narrow my neurotic moments to a specific time of day rather than a generalized, obsessive checking of my email every 15 minutes-however, the voices in my head are still saying, "what if they send it early?!"

Hey all- just got in off the waitlist!!
good luck to everyone- system should update tonight

...am I the only one who after checking e-mail and finding no application status updates, comes onto VCU Central to see if anybody else has been taken off the waitlist?

btw, congrats Tangent!...are you in-state or OOS?

I am OOS-
I only found out because I was asking about something else and they just told me that they changed my status to accept and I should get the offical status change tonight when the system updates
SO hopefully a bunch of you will find out some good news tonight!!!

Yes! Now I have a reason to neurotically check my e-mail every 5 minutes, instead of just doing it aimlessly.

Oh, and congrats. 👍 I would still be jumping up and down too much to type if it were me though.

Hopefully some more SDN VCU hopefuls will be getting the good news tonight. 🙂

At 7:02, that's probably when their system updates. Watch out refresh button!!
