2007 Non-Trad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Quix,

Glad to hear that it sounds like it went well. Hopefully good news is coming your way soon.

*********************************************************

I was just reminded that I have not updated this thread...as of last Saturday (official letter) and Wednesday (unofficial phone call of congrats from the Dean), I have been accepted to attend medical school!

It looks like I will be part of the first class to attend the new DO school in Tennessee, LMU-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. I'm quite excited and glad I ended up applying there. The faculty, facilities, staff, and area just blew me away. I cannot wait to get started! Just have to finish off Physics II, which I'm taking online this semester, so it's gonna be a challenge.

So far, I've only been officially rejected at one DO school (DMU) and one MD school (Misery). Lots of apps still out there, and I just became complete at KU, at which I'm a "significant ties" applicant. I don't really expect good news from there, however, so we're planning for a move...I'm not gonna wait on anyone else...it's their loss.

Congrats, Doctor! 🙂

I wrote a thank-you letter to my clinical interviewer this morning, and heard back this afternoon saying that he hopes the committee finds a spot for me. 🙂

Congratulations!! Welcome to Tennessee... it's a wonderful place 🙂

That's got to be encouraging! Thank you for the congrats! Hope you hear something official soon!

Thank you...I've always loved TN since visiting family that lived in Oak Ridge. My uncle is a Nuclear Engineering PhD that has lived all over the country, but loved his time in Oak Ridge.

Also home to my 2nd favorite college football team...Go Vols!

Acceptance! Woo hoo!

G'luck to all my non-trad peeps out there!

Haven't a clue. I've heard 4-6 weeks, but that wasn't from an official source. I'm giving them an update letter tomorrow (I've added some things since they got my AMCAS).

I think I'm giving up hope for this cycle. Many of my friends, some who submitted when I did in September or later already have acceptances. With no interview invites at this late date, it's pretty much over. Now to figure out what the heck happened. 🙁

You are fabulous, don't let anyone tell you different! And stop freaking out about this, USF has several months of interviews left. Maybe they went through the list reverse-alphabetically... so you are towards the bottom. 😉

Just found out that I was accepted to AECOM! This is the best news I heard since my baby was born!

Good luck to everyone and thanks for the support you guys and gals have provided.

Congrats!

I just found out that the Air Force wants to cover my tuition. They don't know that I still haven't made it over the "Need to get in" hump, yet.

No updates from the medical front. Outside of medicine, however, I just found out tonight that I know the actor who plays Sylar on Heroes - he graduated a year behind me in high school. We would BS in the hall between and after classes.

Oh wow....I really like that show!

every time we watch "heroes" my husband tells me "the guy who plays sylar went to CMU". my husband is a CMU alum and obsessivley reports every famous person who went there.

more pittsburgh chatter: I had to take my son to Children's Hospital today for his genetics stuff and I just can't express in words how much I genuinely hate whoever it is that is in charge of the parking system at all the UPMC hospitals (other than St. Margaret's) . I dread dealing with the parking more than the watching-my-son-get-painful-tests part I swear. Western Penn is a sweet sweet parking situation. UPMC needs to take a lesson. End of rant.

Hey, Quix, just wanted to let you know I've been enjoying your ongoing contributions to the pre-allo evolution thread. Best of luck to you this cycle.

Thanks much. It's an interesting topic, and I've been arguing about it for years. I'd get back into it tonight, but it's been a long day, and my bed is calling. 😉

Ok, I'll join the thread. Just found out today that I've a Univ of Cincinnati acceptance (thanks, email alert for the online status page!). Cleveland Clinic accepted me back in December.

My only Ohio connection is that I dated someone at Miami University (near Cincinnati) back in the early 90s. Go figure.. 🙂

well I hope that bodes well for me... I grew up there and my family's still there.

*crosses fingers for next year*

That seems downright "cruel".

Good luck...I'm pullin' for ya!

Hopefully it's a subtle hint!

Knock and wood, and yes, it's cruel. 😉

I would find it really funny if it turned out that I heard about acceptance from financial aid. 😳

i'm actually a pgher removed in boston right now...but i will be back there the weekend of feb. 9, so maybe we can hook something up then?
Dang... I've been really busy lately. I have to coach a high school fencing team tomorrow (~11-4), but if anybody wants to get an early bite to eat, let me know. Sorry for short notice... but since Quix/MVDM/whoever are in the area and PBJ/scentimint are around it might be fun.

BTW... did not know about Sylar from Heroes... love the show as well.... I wonder if I ever brushed shoulders with the guy when I was at CMU...?

I'm running a speech and debate tournament tomorrow (North Hills) and then going to a cystic fibrosis event in the evening, otherwise I'd take you up on this. I'm thinking we need a non-trad Mad Mex night.

I got an email from Kirksville on THE DAY that they said they would know my fate...

I opened it, and it was an electronic Christmas card...

That is horrifically awful and ridiculously funny in a schadenfreude kind of way. You win.

... crap... if you see any of the Mt. Lebo kids, tell "Xing" he was supposed to go fencing... 😡

I can't quite explain the feeling of seeing "KCOM ADMISSIONS" in big, bold letters, only to find out it was a Christmas card...

Nice touch, but not quite what I was looking for that day! 🙂

ok, well you guys go for it planning something this time and i will have to get in on it next time. 🙂

i did not realize how much stuff i have planned on this "weekend off"!!

Pitt sent me a financial aid e-mail, but I haven't heard anything about acceptance.

😕
and that IS strange....they didn't send me anything (but maybe that's cause i'm on the waitlist already).

We'll see what happens - at least I can get in contact with them tomorrow to get a better idea about what is going on.

In other news, a clinician I've been working with since May has asked for a self-evaluation letter for the CSTP program at Pitt (i.e., before he writes the LOR, he wants to know what I have to say about myself). I hate writing these things; I usually go for subtly awesome ( 😉 ), but it's hard to have that objective insight.

Bah. I'll try to finish it tomorrow afternoon.

Was he asked to write this letter? ... I was never asked for any such letters 🙁 🙁 :scared: 😕

No - it's an option to send additional letters for consideration for the CSTP program. The letters I have for UPitt are only talking about medical school; I've talked with three other people about research specific letters (2 clinicians, 1 psychologist who taught my research methods course (and for whom I TA'ed biopsychology).

I got an invite to interview at Jefferson in Philadelphia at the end of March. After receiving declination letters from half of the schools to which I'd applied, without an interview, I seriously thought it wasn't going to happen this year. With it being late February without a single interview, I had resigned myself to not getting in and just waiting out another frustratingly painful year of applications.

I know many of you have now received acceptances and I wish you a great time at med school. For those of you waiting with me, I wish you the best of luck!

Congrats! I'm still waiting to hear from the Philly schools. Except the podiatry schools. I've heard too much from them.

Got a rejection letter from NYU today, which wasn't surprising, considering I never mailed them their secondary fee. 😉

And another podiatry school sent me snail-mail.

So after applying there last summer, I got an interview invite to U of Vermont today. I've already decided to go to LECOM so I'll be declining, but it's nice to know at least one allo school didn't feel I was unworthy of being a physician. I also had to decline my PCOM interview because LECOM is the best choice for my kids and husband. Part of me wishes I was younger and could just choose a school based on my own personal opinions, but I wouldn't even be a together enough person to go to med school if it weren't for my kids. So, selfish moment over. Really grateful I got into med school at all.

And wow, I'm so much better off than this guy on Dr. Phil who is addicted to crack cocaine. I myself am addicted to watching Dr. Phil...

Wow congrats Mies!!!

I never heard from PCOM although it's probably because I sent in the secondary in December.

Hey guys,

I just got back from my KCUMB interview. The school completely blew me away. I always liked it on paper, but having actually interviewed there, I now love it completely. I think everything went smoothly, but there's no way to know, which is kind of nerve wracking, actually. The facilities were amazing, the people cordial and helpful, and the curriculum is just awesome. I really enjoyed talking with some of the MS1's and 2's. The students there seem like a great bunch to be around, and I can totally see myself attending there happily. Of course, loving KCUMB this much just makes me even more nervous as I await the adcomms decision (they meet this Friday and plan on getting back to us early next week). Thankfully it's a quick wait. :scared:

:luck: good luck! at least it's quicker than waiting for MCAT scores!👍

Good luck!

Heard back from Temple today: thin envelope. Oh well, worst case scenario I just apply again earlier next cycle.
