Anyone know anything about NEOUCOM?

I've seen SDN discussion of every Ohio school except this one.

Any current students out there?

I'm interviewing there on 11/12.

I've been checking out the website and there is one thing that disconcerts me. Their website says that only about 20% of each medical school matriculant class is direct entry MD. I assume that means that the other 80% are 19-21 year olds from the BS/MD route that have already secured spots in the class.

There class size is about 100. That means only 20 spots left open.

Nothing.

Did they happen to mention to you when they started interviewing?

No way, i Have an interview there on 11/12 there as well.:laugh: I wasnt complete with NEOUCOM until 10/17, and heard back 10/30 for an invite to interview. I quess they do everything pretty much in october, and interview in november. I wouldnt worry about the 20 spots anyway, seems from your profile that you are very highly qualified.

They didn't. But judging from other SDNers they don't start interviewing until November and didn't start handing out interview invites until mid October.

10/22 was the first interview day. When I was there, they said they only interview maybe 300 people and up to 40 can matriculate...depends on how many of their BS/MD students make it through the program.

I surprisingly liked the school too. Students all seemed really happy and the school had a lot of cool opportunities. The 3rd and 4th year are with community-based hospitals, which is different than most schools that I know of.

This one is slow (for an Ohio school). As fast as Case was, NEOUCOM was slow. Interesting location in Rootstown but a chance to rotate at Akron Childrens Hospital which is awesome. My interview is coming up mid November.

My interview was 10/22 as well. I was impressed with the school which seems to be contrary to a lot of comments I've seen about NEOUCOM. I would have no qualms about attending this school.

Interviewed today. Very nice school. Kind of has a similar feel as Wright State - small class size, community-based. I'm not really holding my breath though, considering direct entry applicants are fighting over limited spots. I'm a little surprised that they're considering not releasing any decisions at all until March 15th.

The tag-team interviews were very relaxed.

That is not what they told my interview group. We were told the ADCOM meets the third Wed. of every month (next Wednesday!) and they make calls after that. I hope I'm right.

Does it seem like they are only interviewing one day a month?

I hope you're right too. But the director of admissions said that as of now they are not releasing any decisions until march 15th but that there are ongoing discussions about it. She said that there were several people on the ADCOM who are not happy about the plan to hold off decisions until spring and they're lobbying to change it.

does anyone know if they have a minimum GPA/MCAT to receive a secondary? they never sent me one following my primaries a couple months ago. im in-state have an mcat in their average and a gpa barely below it... probably too late to apply now but i kept wondering why they didnt want to show me any love.

I'm a current M1 at NEOUCOM and would be happy to answer any questions anyone has to the best of my ability.

As far as my take so far: I really enjoy the school AND the surrounding area. Which may be a surprise to some since most see Rootstown as the middle of nowhere. You're 10-15 minutes from Kent and 15-20 from Chapel Hill area. So you're not really that far from bars, restaurants, shopping, etc. The curriculum is very focused on primary care (the founding mission of the school was to increase the number of primary care physicians in northeast ohio). However, you are obviously not bound to a primary care specialty and the match results are from a wide variety of specialties every year. There is a course called "doctoring" that you have on top of your science studies that focuses on patient interaction, the physical exam, epidemiology, ethics, etc. In this course, there are encounters with "standardized patients" that just get your feet wet with the patient encounter.

It is true that NEOUCOM takes a limited amount of direct entry students (there is about 35 in my class if I am remembering correctly), and many of us were waitlisted (I wasn't accepted until mid-June). When I interviewed (first week in Jan) they had already given out all 20 direct entry spots and so the best I could do was get waitlisted. The school is also pretty slow with waitlist movement because they need time to finalize the BS/MD class. Depending on how many BS/MD students don't make the minimum entrance requirements or elect for a 3rd year dictates how large the direct entry class becomes.

That was a brief synopsis of my experience so far (I should really get back to studying.....). If you'd like some more detail on something let me know.

Hello! It seems as though most people on this thread are direct entry, but I figured I'd put in my input. Im in my senior year of high school right now, applied to the bs/md program, interviewed and was offered a seat into the program. I interviewed at Youngstown State, and expected not to like it too much. But the students that were there were welcoming and actual people (had personalities, not just bookworms) and were mature. The interviewers were respectable and the other students who interviewed were obviously smart yet still nice. While listening to everything going on there, you guys are right to say that they really focus on the bs/md students above the direct entry studets. I interviews 12/7/08 and received my acceptance letter yesterday! What a Christmas present!

I have yet o visit NEOUCOM, but anyone out there: what is the college like in terms of preparation for residency? What was the work load like in the two years before medical school? Do you still have time to go out and have fun, and I dont mean partying, just simple things like working out and keeping sane?

I'd appreciate any input!
Thanks!!!

Waitlisted. But as I said before, not surprised in the least.

yeah me too. Waitlisted. Tried to call NEOUCOM to see at least the ranking on their alternate list, but seems they are closed.

If you're waitlisted that is a fine place to be for NEOUCOM. I know it is difficult, but try to relax amidst all of the uncertainty. I will tell you from experience, NEOUCOM didn't rank me on their waitlist until April, and definitely won't call anyone up (unless exceptional circumstances exist) until June.

Like I said in a previous post, until they know the size of the BS/MD class they will not know how many people they can pull off of the waitlist. (this causes them to be slower than other schools)

Good Luck!

Again, if I can be of help send me a PM

I just recieved a secondary from NEOUCOM. I am wondering, if everyone is getting waitlisted, do I even have a chance?

they don't give out very many interviews...so you definitely have a chance. i was accepted but withdrew, so there could still be spots to give outright still! good luck to you!

Thank you. I am applying OOS, so that is probably why I am getting a secondary so late.

just got an interview invite which i am about to cancel, since I've already been accepted to my first choice... i hope that helps someone...

good luck! :luck:

I am a 4th year med student at NEOUCOM. I would be happy to answer any questions you have about the school.

Can someone refresh my memory on how the waitlist works at NEOUCOM? When do they prioritize the top third/middle third/bottom third? For some reason, March 15th is sticking out in my head, but I may be mixing up info from different schools.

I just interviewed at NEOUCOM on 02/25. I read on a website that in 2007 only 0.2% of Out of State applicants were granted an interview but that all who were were accepted. However, another site said that 10/16 were accepted. Since I'm from Seattle, I'm really hoping that I get acceptted, otherwise I would be one of the few out-of-state interviewees who weren't!

I was pretty jetlagged though, and I think I was blabbing a bit. So I guess we'll have to see.

I interviewed at NEOUCOM on 1/15 and I still have not heard anything back from them. I thought I remembered them saying it would take about 3 weeks before they let me know whether I was wait-listed or rejected, but I may be wrong about that.

I was just wondering if anyone else who had interviewed there had to wait a really long time before they notified you of their decision.

Maybe this thread should go in the pre-osteo forum

neoucom is allopathic.

and to the above: i interviewed in october and didnt hear until late december...so way more than 3 weeks. their adcom doesnt meet too often...you could try calling though -they are very nice on the phone.

Hmm. I was told the committee meets on the third Wednesday of every month. Maybe they meet more often as it comes towards the end of interviewing season?

Well, I just got a call to tell me that I have been accepted. I just interviewed at Albany, so I think I will wait to hear from them.

I also got the phone call that I was accepted today after being put on the alternate list in December. Congrats to asant1!

So I guess this means the alternate list is moving. Someone call meeeeeee:xf:

Also, can we call and find out our position on the alternate list?

I interviewed in the fall and was alternate-listed. Just tried the other day and heard that ranking would be done in "two to three weeks," which is what I've been hearing for two to three months.

Congrats to those that have gotten in already, hope to be joining you soon!

I interviewed in November, waitlisted...NEOUCOm is my top choice, i really love this school. 😍 and can stay close to home. I am so anxious to get into the school, please anyone who is accepted and plans not to attend, to decline the offer. That way the waitlist will keep on moving..😀

i interviewed january 14 and did not hear anything until last week when they called me and told me they had accepted me. i thought it was weird that they never told me if i was waitlisted to begin with. instead they let me sweat it for two months.

funny story though. i decided i would call them and ask when i should expect to hear back. as i was leaving a message with Luke Gloeckner, he was calling me. when i switched over to take his call, he told me they accepted me.

Ok, I am just confused. I talked to Luke this morning and he said the alternate list wouldn't be prioritized for another 2-3 weeks (which was stated in an earlier post also), yet people are being accepted off the list?

They should be replying sometime soon, a friend just heard from the BS/MD program part of it.

Sorry for double post but someone asked about Match lists, they just released 2009's Match list: http://neoucom.edu/releases.php?release=181.

The list first starts with the people that were in-state based on their counties then those that came to NEOUCOM as out of state.

Is anyone aware of the number of transfer spots available for the upcoming 3rd year class? Is anyone familiar with the process, when do they notify individuals about interviews?

Has anyone harassed NEOUCOM lately? It's been almost a month since Luke told me 2-3 weeks for rankings and still nothing.

Got the letter today. Middle third. Sigh.

yeah me too..middle. i mean not bad, but we'll see:idea:

Do we know how often they make it through the middle third of the waitlist?
