Did you use someone as a LOR that did not teach you a class? like a physician or former employer? I'm not sure what to put for class # and stuff.

Yeah I used a physician and a pastor. I just put their name and title and entered "na" for everything else except for credit hours I put "0" b/c the program wont allow you to put a letter in that blank. I was under the impression in the instructions that it isnt even necessary that we list any optional letters so I dont really think it matters what we put down. I think it is purely for us to check letter status.

On average, how long are each of you taking to complete each secondary essay? Do you do it in one sitting and send? Are you having people edit each one (that`s a lot to ask of friends/family...). Or do you work on it for a few days, etc....

Just curious!

I`ve been working on each one for a few days (maybe an hour or less each time?)... but they`re really starting to build up, and now i`m super behind!

Does Dartmouth screen? I haven't received their secondary yet.

Initially, I took a few days to write/edit secondary essays. But now I can reuse most of what I've already written, with just a few minor changes to fit the particular question. So I'm turning them around same day or so.

On average I'd say within one or two days....because I do have a least one person read what I wrote and give me the OK...just to assure myself that im not starting to sound like a ******ed broken record in these essays

That`s awesome, thanks (referring to the Q i posted about time people take to write secondaries). I don`t know how to quote more thing at a time....or i would`ve.

But another question...For all those `why did you apply to...` questions, are schools expecting specific things about their program or curriculum, or just general statements (ex. great city, school is research oriented, etc.)?

wow, and this is a french keyboard so the apostrophes point in the opposite direction....

ex.

It`s, Isn`t, Aren`t.

weird.

ETSU's secondary is past the screening stages and is now available to those who meet whatever requirements. Exact same questions as last year- will post more info soon.

the committee's can probably discern how long you devoted to writing their essays.

Just got this email from emory today.

ETSU Prompts:

This supplementary information request provides you the opportunity to address specific points beyond the AMCAS application that you would like the admissions committee to know about you and your candidacy here. Please respond to the three items below. Please limit your response to 2250 characters for each question.

-What characteristics or abilities do you possess that you believe will most contribute to your success as a physician?

-As the profession of medicine demands physical, intellectual, and emotional commitment, what have you done in your life to demonstrate dedication to the achievement of a life objective?

-QCOM is recognized as a leader in primary health care education and some of our students choose QCOM for that reason. Other than that as a motivation, what is your rationale for applying to QCOM?

I don't know why it's blue and I can't change it by highlighting and changing the color like in any other post... weird.

I've been turning mine around in two days or so. I'll spend some time after receiving the prompts to jot down ideas and do some general planning, then sit down and spend a few hours writing (and usually editing down to the word limit) the next day. It has gotten easier now that some topics are repeating, though.

I spent a few weeks in between my verification and when secondaries came out compiling the prompts to last years secondaries and writing essays for those.

I had others proofread them before the secondaries have come out. Now I just copy & paste, proofread it myself again and hit submit.

So far none of the secondaries have been different from last year's (I've completed 9) and I've been able to turn them around in the same day.

Anyone else starting to feel like all you do is think, write, and read about your many skills and accomplishments?

And check SDN, of course.

😉

Hahaha yessss! Actually, I'm mostly just getting sick of writing about my life, and soon I'm just going to start writing "Honestly, I'm not that interesting. I could BS for 4 paragraphs, but really, I'm not that cool."

Turns out they kind of just let the applications build up till around the end of July and then start looking at them aka if you get it in before August you're in the same "early" pool.

I believe it....but some schools do specifically say that they review apps in order of submission

am i the only person who hasn't gotten cornell's secondary?

The University of Massachusetts secondary is now available, but I can't seem to access it. Anyone else having this trouble?

I haven't received any of the insta-secondaries that you get pre-amcas-verification. For example I applied to WashU which usually sends a secondary request within a day or two, but I haven't received anything yet. What should I do?

How long has it been? If it's been less than 2-3 weeks, I'd wait it out.

Oh, and hello SA buddy.

Does Dartmouth screen? I haven't received their secondary yet.
Nope...pretty much none of the IVies screen.

I didnt get it either, but I went and filled it out and submitted it, bc it was pretty easy.

did you write an essay for the first one? or did you just list your courses.

Well I've now submitted all 12 I've received. Still waiting on 11 more. Hopefully they come soon. I want this done ASAP.

listed teh courses, and then told them imma be TAing a class and continuing my research and Volunteering.

I've been trying to be as specific as I can without sounding like I'm spitting out blurbs from the website.

For instance, for UVA, I wrote about how I liked the generalist scholars program and the emphasis on opportunities for students interested in primary care, since that's where I'm likely headed. Basically, I'm just trying to find something unique about the school that fits with my interests/goals, etc.

Of course, all the schools' websites start looking the same after a while... 😉

I got Cornell and Mich State...

When will I get BU, Duke and Dartmouth?! 🙁 🙁 🙁

So for schools that already have the secondaries up without invites should I start filling those out or wait for an invite?

am i the only person who hasn't gotten cornell's secondary?

I didn't get it, but I submitted anyway. Afterwards, I got an email saying:

"We noticed that you already submitted the Supplemental Application Form but here is the email that is sent to applicants to let them know how to access Weill Cornell Medical College's secondary form."

So I'd say go for it.

anyone can post up duke's secondary?

should i submit my application even when i haven't sent the school the reference letters yet?

This happens to me too for SLU application. I email them and ask them to check for me. They emailed me back immediately and said that they already sent the invitation out to me. So they resent it to me one more time. However, if you are still in the process of verifying, I wouldn't suggest you do what I did.

19 more "real" secondaries with essays to go... man, what a marathon

i've been able to log into schools secondaries (Cornell, Dartmouth) without ever getting the email invite. I thought it was because my email was filtering out crap....but now im kind of confused. Anyone else using gmail or something with a junk folder, who can log into Dartmouth, and not have an email invite?

idunno....im getting tired and sleepy 😴

I think emails get sent out in batches rather than all at once. I was verified early, but I also have a last name starting with B, so I'm not sure which they use. Or they could use AMCAS ID # also. I've received every secondary that is out except Vermont, which seems like only one or two people here got.

This may seem like an easy question, but when should I expect to receive secondary application requests? Also, will they come in the mail or through e-mail (or both)?

My AMCAS was finally verified on 7/8/08, but I have yet to receive ANY secondary application requests.

Schools I applied to:

University of California San Francisco
David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA
University of California, Irvine- College/Medicine
Loma Linda University School of Medicine
Oregon Health and Science University
Keck Sch. of Med.University of Southern California
Stanford University School of Medicine
University of California San Diego
University of Hawaii John A. Burns Sch. of Med.
University of California, Davis School of Medicine
UCLA/Drew Medical Education Program

The UCs all screen, so they don't send out secondaries till mid-late July at the *very* earliest.

Hi All,

Just for everyone who's anxiously awaiting... I'll list the schools I've received secondaries. Dates are approximate, too lazy to track down the emails. My AMCAS was verified around June 28th -- something like that..

Columbia - July 1st-ish?
Dartmouth - Today, July 11
Mt. Sinai - July 8/9th-ish?
NYMC - July 10th-ish?
SUNY Downstate - (emailed invite for paper secondary) July 8th-ish?
UMich - July 5th-ish?
UPenn - July 10th-ish?
UPitt - July 10th-ish?
Yale - July 1st-ish?
Pritzker (UChicago) - July 8th-ish?

Ok, I'm getting a little antsy about BU since I've been sitting on the essay waiting to submit. I called the lady yesterday and she said they have my info...just haven't sent me an email. I got my AMCAS verified second day so I know that isn't the issue. My LOR were recently uploaded to VirtualEvals and haven't been updated on AMCAS yet so could that be the issue?
Has anyone received BU who doesn't have their LOR marked as received on AMCAS?

No for the LOR deal, that shouldnt be the problem.,.....youll probably get it today or monday.

I have the same question. Did anybody respond to this? Anybody have news on Rosalind Franklin's secondary?

Thanks
This is last years Essay....

"At Rosalind Franklin University, we celebrate and support a Life in Discovery. Briefly describe what a Life in Discovery means to you."

It is probably the same this year, but you cant be certain.

Vermont

http://www.med.uvm.edu/admissions/TB1+RL.asp?SiteAreaID=613

LOR requirements: Committee if you have one. Otherwise two science and one non-science. A fourth letter is optional. DO NOT send more than four.

The only essay is any additional information you'd like to add. It's optional.

Hmmm... just got a password and logged in, and this is what it says:

Dear chad5871:

We have received word from AMCAS that you have selected to apply to the University of Vermont College of Medicine and are pleased that UVM is among your medical school choices.

We will be emailing you instructions on how to access our online supplemental application over the next few weeks.

Thank you for your interest in the University of Vermont College of Medicine and be sure to continue to check your status via the Online Applicant Center.

Don't see where to access the secondary - I guess I have to wait for an official invite then.

I forgot to post that here. You can't access the secondary until you get the email. I tried a few days ago and couldn't until I got the email this afternoon.
