Hey everyone. I went by the admissions office today after seeing the "letter sent" on my status page. I asked Ian my status, and he told me the news. I am WAITLISTED. He said that every year they accept 200 people before the waitlist and about 100 accept the offer and matriculate.

They then fill the remaining 20-30 spots with waitlist people who come from a list of around 100 people.

They don't consider the list till May, and once on the list, everyone is reevaluated. Our current ranks are erased. They take people off the list up until late July. He said don't get your hopes up since majority don't get in off the waitlist, but I could have told him that given my chance is now about 25%.

He said there were a fair amount of rejections sent out, so I shouldn't be too upset. Whatever, it is what it is. I hope to see some acceptances here for all you great people, and for those who are considering not going, please don't go if your heart isn't init, because I know for a lot of us, ours is.

so they are done accepting people?....i dont even have a status update and i interviewed back in November lollll

Very likely. You goiing to the second look in April?

I always felt id prefer La Jolla over Westwood since I hate dense urban areas and traffic. Not to mention Id need to take stats somehow in the next 4 months :S

I'll be there for sure! I really look forward to it. My SO lives in LA, so that's the bullet I have to bite. Otherwise, La Jolla would be my number one.

Essentially yes. The surrealistic optimists want to say no, but us realists know its yes unless you are some sort of rare exception.

not that i dont believe it but it does seem a bit odd for them to have "maxed out" in February (last year they were accepting well into march)

Hm so I guess interview invites are pretty much done also. Bummer 🙁

so does all the letter sent only contained either rejection or waitlist with no acceptance ?

Haha man, this thread will be painted red by the end of tomorrow--a slaughterhouse of sorts. Oh well, at least I have UCSD... I'll see you guys there. Oh yea, after living here for four years, I can definitely say that La Jolla is light years better than downtown LA.

To all the people who have other Cali schools(especially UCSD)... I hate you/ am extremely jealous...

batman1983, see you at Southwestern...

Hahahah you know what I just realized: UCSD's undergrad is full of people who were rejected from UCLA. I remember a majority of my friends' reasons for attending UCSD undergrad were "because I didn't get into UCLA and berkeley rejected me." I was in that same boat.. didn't get into UCLA for undergrad (my top choice) and ended up at UCSD. Guess things will never change.

And then when we all meet each other in San Diego, we can reminisce about the UCLA thread and all of its torturous ways.

Ian definitely confirmed that people will be getting acceptances. They just number few. Someone here on SDN will get accepted from this batch I bet.

I just can't see how anyone will get rejected. Everyone's applications seem pretty good. We'll know sooner or later.

I hate traffic by the way. Is there bad traffic in San Diego?

Hang in there monkey...maybe you'll be the one!

Like I said earlier, rare exceptions will be the acceptances (eg late interview, significant development, lost interview notes etc), not us normal guys who have been sitting on our hands for 4 months.

i want to stay hopeful because i don't know what it's like to have an acceptance yet. however, the general trend for me has been waitlists (ucsd, uci, usc)... so i expect the same from ucla, if not a flat rejection. 🙁 i am sure people from this thread will get acceptances, don't worry yet! good luck everyone!

same with me! same schools too.

I was trying to think of a way to describe my disappointment with UCLA and the UCs in general, but unfortunately, I don’t have the writing skills. So, I decided to steal this quote from “Balls of Fury”, one of the most underrated movies in my opinion, which can kinda of be applied to my experiences with UCLA.

"She is cruel, laughs at you when you are naked, but you keep coming back for more, and more! Why? Because she is the only prostitute I can afford."
-Mister Hong

Honestly, I just love this quote and have been trying to find a way to use it for a while. Anyways, funky Ill see you at UTSW and congrats again to all those ppl that got into UCLA. A consolation to take from this thread is that at least all of us have been or will be accepted to a medical school by the end of this cycle, which from my previous 2 application attempts is an achievement in itself.

I'm pretty sure in a few days I will be added to the list of future UCSD med students rejected by UCLA. However, i do know quite a few UCSD students who chose La Jolla over Westwood, so hopefully that counts for something.

The next couple days on this thread are gonna be interesting...

I have an upcoming interview, but this thread is discouraging. Do I even stand a chance? I am not super amazing or anything.

Since you got an invite, they are interested in you. Don't get discouraged.

I hope there is room for acceptances still. I guess I will just have to really trust that admissions after the interview is subjective and hope that I get lucky!

I interviewed at 1/20 and my decision letter just been sent on 2/18. Is this good or bad ?

That is the million dollar question. I'm sure we'll start knowing in a few hours. At least for us living nearby.

W-W-W-WAITLISTED!! I live in westwood so I assume that's why my letter got here so early. Man I didn't even read the entire letter.. I just saw that one word. UGH. Defeat has never felt so bad.. all these years of work and all I wanted was an acceptance at UCLA. Oh well time to let go. For the final time: **** YOU UCLA.

edit: lol can't let go. Do you guys think submitting an LOI would make any sort of difference?

If you super duper only want to go to UCLA, then yes it will probably help you more competitive for your 1/20 chance of being accepted off the waitlist.

Well...actually...if there's 100 people on the waitlist...and they take 20-30 from there...it's more like 1/4 or 25%...that's not awful odds...

No, they SOMETIMES take that many. That was probably a upper limit to make the people asking feel better (especially when they ask in person).

i interviewed in november and ucla sent out my final decision yesterday. fml. does anyone have a link to last yrs thread?

well. some people need to keep hope.

think of the odds this way: if you are holding two spades against someone's over pair (like pocket aces), and you have a flush draw off the turn, there is a 20% chance you win the hand on the river. now those odds aren't in your favor, but good enough. because you're probably already so committed to the money you put in the pot, those odds are good enough to pay to see the river.

let's extrapolate this med school admissions: yeah getting off the waitlist is a long shot, but you are already so invested in the "hand" (think all the time, money, and effort that went into making your app sparkle), you can't fold now. and 20% return on that investment is pretty good really. at least better than 0%.

I interviewed way back in the middle of October and i haven't heard a peep since, nor does my Status say anything.

What does it all mean?

i think it means that ucla is intimidated by all your top-notch acceptances. by the way, i think we interviewed at washu on the same day. you went to yale right?

I think it means that UCLA wants to give us all ulcers. Seriously, I prefer the complete black box to the mystery status changes.

So far, the two people who have received there 2/18 letters are both waitlist.... let's see what else comes out in this mix of "everything" 🙄

My slow-ass mailman isn't here yet and I really should leave but I'm just so curious.

Some good and bad news:

Bad: For this current year's class, more people than expected matriculated from the accepted list, so that prob means that this year they will be less generous with accepting ppl off waitlists.

Good: It is still very possible to get in off the wait list (not the hold list). There was even a person who was waited listed at UCLA, was moved in and ready to start classes at a med school on the east coast, got a call from UCLA 1 week before classes started, that he was accepted. He sold what furniture and food he had bought for his new apt, subleased it for a huge discount to someone else, and flew to LA to start classes.

So it is is possible all the way up until the beginning of August to get in.

ughhhhhh this thread is depressing =/

Im pretty sure I got a rejection, dammit. I guess i'll just pray for the waitlist 🙁

Just got the waitlist letter, fun fun, good luck to those still waiting.

just got the HOLD letter--2nd priority waitlist which means basically rejection since you are not even reconsidered until july....

So, it looks like it's been all waitlists so far. If anyone is lucky enough to get an acceptance, could you put down the date you interviewed as well so that we can get a general idea as to whether or not earlier interviewees might still have some hope.
