2008-2009 UMass Secondary Application Thread

My stats really depend on how you measure them….

If AMCAS reads them, then I got a 27P (2007) and then a 27R MCAT (2008) ugh AMCAS GPA is 3.16 Sci, 3.4 Culm.

If UMass Boston (where I graduated and did 70+ credits) reads them, then my GPA is 3.7 culm, honors/distinction/magna cum laude yadayada. Sci GPA is 3.5 or so.

The difference is due to my bombed out sophomore year at UMass Amherst.

Other than that, I've done a bunch of leadership positions, publications, actually paid my way through school, had a very close encounter with cancer… and am an accredited "Green Building Professional" (LEED AP for those who know about it) as well as certified Rape Crisis Counselor… and a bunch of other stuff that I won't bore all of you with. Oh, and I know the Chancellor at UMass Med due to my student activism when he was Chancellor at UMass (I like to think he liked me…😛)

Considering that I've been interviewed only at UMass after two years of applying (7 schools in 2007 -> 1 interview UMass, 18 schools in 2008 --> 2 pre-interview hold and 1 interview@umass), I think that last paragraph of non-stat information does not really matter much UNLESS your stats are good. Well, you knew that already.

As far as backup plans go, I have a good job that is non-medical and could stay here for a while before applying again. OR go and get an MS in Bioinformatics or a Caribbean MD. If I go the MS/work route, then I would take MCAT again...I am not crazy about special Master's programs and would rather just go to St. George's, to which I've already applied...

But I really hope I get into UMass! So we'll see in April/May - maybe I'll have a nice b-day present on May 16.

Do people think it would make a difference if I write a nice letter of interest to UMass (which I did not do last year) explaining how much I love them, and wanna have like, 10,000 of their babies?

I'm in a similar situation GPA-wise, due to a bombed-out freshman year, though I certainly can't claim the other hardships you've had to go through. But I can get a feel for where you're coming from.

I wrote a letter of intent (since it's post-interview, I think you can skip the letter of interest) to umass that said, in so many words, that I really did want to have (or maybe deliver) 10,000 of their babies. I can't comment yet whether it helped me or not, but I guess the standard response is that it can't hurt. Unless your spelling is awful or something🙂.

This sounds like a good plan to me. I sent in a letter many months ago. If I get waitlisted, then I am going to send them another letter with update info as well.

I compulsively check my UMass status. I'm losing it- barely holding onto threads of sanity. Then I have moments of clarity, and poof, there they go again................

I interviewed on 12/9 and am also pretty much going insane. This is SOOO frustrating! I feel like I'm going to be waiting until mid-May to hear something, and I just DON'T think I can make it that long. Ahhhhhhh!!!

Today is a good day. I just quit and have my new job starting a week from Monday. Thus, I have a week vacation coming up..................................

Hang in there guys...it sucks, but try to limit your checking of status, it will drive you batty. And loosen your stool.

Haha - thanks Liminal... I was thinking the same thing about my name... an acceptance goes a long way to improving my self-confidence about this career. 🙂

I interviewed on January 14th - at which point they warned us to not expect any news till mid-April. I'm waitlisted at Pitt and GW, and Tufts said the same thing about waiting till mid-April (active consideration), so I was seriously not thinking about this at all. Totally put it out of my mind (took a lot of work, but did it)... so when i got an e-mail today at 2:33 PM, I about jumped out of my skin. Craziness.

I hope you hear some good news soon. Also - to get others' hopes up a little - I have a lot of VERY relevant experience over the past 3 years, (work at a medical school directly with medical students and faculty, both with med education and research) but my AMCAS GPA is a 3.3 (both cum, and science). My MCAT is decent, but I was prepared for my GPA to waitlist me... as I assume it did at Pitt and GW. I checked out other acceptees' MDApps, and their stats are way up there. So - lower GPA-ers, keep the hope alive!!

Congratulations!!! Ouch, that hurt, I celebrated a bit too much last night. 🙂 Coming to second look?

Oh, and btw - I'm a low gpa person too, 3.0 in undergrad, 3.95 in postbacc, for a whopping total of 3.35. Otherwise I have a reasonably strong app and some confounding factors, but it's definitely true that not every low gpa will keep you out of med school.

I interviewed at UMASS in September and still haven't heard anything in terms of wait list or acceptance or decline. It was my first interview of about 7 and I have heard from everywhere else (including a school that I interviewed at 2 months ago). I'm into a couple of other school but UMASS is, as it is for just about everyone in mass, my number 1. I am not too sure what to make of it. Could anyone offer me any insight as to what to expect or what's going on?

Me too, meech! I interviewed Sept 16th, and no word yet. Just hang in there!

What is going on is UMass is accepting the really stellar folks up front. Since they don't over-accept the way some schools do (and count on some people turning down the acceptance to go elsewhere), acceptances are given out... judiciously, especially at this point in the season. It's entirely possible that we'll be put on the wait-list, and that is not a bad thing (I think Brenda said over half the class comes from the wait-list), it just means we have to wait. I'm not sure when the wait-list forms and starts moving, but I think it's around the end of April.

I'm a re applicant... last year I was put on the waitlist early april. Then there was a huge surge of acceptances mid may... sadly i wasn't one of them last year...

Me too! Although I am as sure as I can be that I was waitlisted at the very end of April. Rejections went out a few days later. Followed by surge of waitlist acceptances May 13th.

Are you sure your waitllist was early April?

I wish umass could reject those of us folks that they have no intention of accepting early on. Seems unlikely that there are only 1 or 2 of us that fit into this category, and for everyone else, they really are unsure until May.

Using previous years as a rough estimate, I think about nearly half come off the waitlist. They reject plenty of people, so no, they don't put almost everyone on the waitlist. They just wait until the end of the game to give out these rejections (early May.)
