When i took the MCAT the first time I got an 8 on verbal because I tried to read it too much. Second time around I realized that I shouldn't be reading for facts, but WHY the author was writing it and what type of person the author is based on the facts he/she likes to present. Second time around my verbal score was 11. Considering your stats right now, I would say to submit. Even if you don't get in, you can always reapply. Do some DO shadowing and get a letter of recommendation and you'll be all set. A few clinical volunteer hours are good. Then just have fun at the interview. Touro-CA was one of the schools that accepted me because I was the only guy in that group interview who wasn't nervous and answered their questions thoroughly, clearly, and had fun. Meditate before your interview if you have to but try to keep a calm mind.

BTW my gpa was far lower than yours and my volunteer hours are no where near the average premed...so I know you can get in too.
 
I just got my MCAT scores yesterday 26 R 10 verbal 10 bio 6 PS. I am really upset about the 6 in PS since I know I can do better...

So I am planning to retake and wait to apply next cycle but say that my PS doesnt really go up for what ever reason...Does a 6 really hurt me, I have a 3.9 GPA science and overall plus research and athletics...

I am a maryland resident and the DO schools I am considering are UNECOM and PCOM right now.
 
Here's my story... I applied to only MD schools last year and interviewed at just one, but did not get in anywhere. I basically continued working at my desk job that has nothing to do with medicine just to have a stable income (to pay for two years' of applications) while studying to retake the MCAT. The MCAT's done with and now I'm applying like crazy to both MD and DO schools now but I have some regrets... why didn't I find the time to shadow a DO earlier? Granted I did work from 8am-7pm every day and then went to class and studied after work, and also volunteered Saturday mornings, I still could have shadowed a DO on Saturday afternoons. I wish I had shadowed a DO earlier because now I realize how important it is to do so, and how important it is to have a DO LOR.

Also, I regret not working in the medical sector. I was already working at my current job and figured I would get in for 2008 entering class and therefore never bothered switching to a relevant job. Maybe I thought that having worked in the hospital a lot in the past was enough. Will that really hurt me?

All being said, here are my stats that outline the pros going for me:
MCAT: 28R (10 physical, 10 bio, 8 verbal)
cumul GPA: 3.60
sci GPA: 3.34

Hospital technician full-time for 2 summers (1000+ hours)
Did research at a med school lab full-time for one summer
Hospital volunteering
TA in college
Lots of other EC's
6 LOR's, 3 of which I'm sure should be awesome and 2 of which are from MD's. Also, 2 letters are from 2005, 2 from 2006, and 2 from 2008. Are the 2005 letters too outdated?

I am scrambling to find a DO to shadow and I've been sending out letters. Anything else I can do to just in the nick of time for this cycle? Thank you so much for your help! Please be brutally honest with me - I can take it.
 
I don't think you're late to the show. That said, I doubt you'll have better luck on the MD side with a 28, but I think the DO side will give you love.

With some exceptions, you can get a letter from an MD instead of a DO. Go hit up one of the docs in the lab where you worked.

In your shoes, I'd be getting ready to kill the interview. Read Gevitz, read the NYT or WSJ health pages, get very very ready. Get mock interviewed, videotape it, work out the jitters and see what you need to do to look doctorly. Get a decent suit and get it tailored and practice wearing it.

Make sure that YOU believe the reason you want to be a doctor.

Can you get a volunteer gig in an ER? I did Sunday nights for 4+ hours for years, and this is where I learned pretty much everything. I think this is a good last minute gig to give you more credibility. There might be a DO in one of the ERs where you live, which would be bonus.

The crappy part about all of this is that you may be hard pressed to establish a relationship with a DO and become so close that they would be willing to write you a LOR. Clearly, they'll know your time constraints and that you really only want to work with them to get that coveted letter.

I know I would feel awkward asking for LOR when I'm trying to get things done as soon as humanly possible. You may have to wait.

But, then again, you could always sell your soul to the devil.

Take a deep breath, let it out and let go of the should-have's. Your app looks pretty great from what I can see, don't let your confidence stumble because of one small aspect. I never even shadowed a DO and I had a choice of schools to attend, you'll do fine

hi. i need some advice. i've only been looking at MD schools and havent really ever considered DO. i'm not sure why, but just stuck to tradition i guess. i already submitted my primaries for amcas and it's verified.

i just got my mcat score from june and it was significantly lower than what i had expected. i considered my options (retaking, career change, post-bacc) and started reading more about DO schools. i'm very much interested and would like to apply.

do you think it's too late to apply for 2009 admission? also, which schools would you recommend with my stats? i have never shadowed a DO and thus have no letter.. i think that MSU (i am michigan resident) does not require a letter from a DO. do you know of any other schools which do not require a DO letter?

my stats:
gpa = 3.4 (both cumulative and sci)
mcat = 25R. 10PS, 7VR, 8BS.
i have letters from both science, non-science and extra LOR.
i have strong EC, including many leadership positions, research, volunteer work (including hospital volunteer)

If you applied last year and interviewed should you change your personal statement? I really like it the way it is and do not want to change it- plus I do not have much to update. Will schools remember the statement and not offer another interview if you already interviewed there?? (I think it could be memorable.)

My second question is do you have to submit all of your MCAT scores or just the one you want to submit? I know for MD schools they get all, but I thought D.O. was different - not sure. Thanks.

1. You don't have to write a completely new statement. However, unless its absolutely perfect, wouldn't hurt to spruce it up a bit.
2. It might show that you were seated for a test and that no score is reported which may not be all that good in adcoms eyes

You have a good shot at those schools i would add UNECOM since you seem to like the east coast. Maybe add a couple more schools also

no its not too late to apply to DO schools, but its clear you are using them as a back up for a low MCAT score. thats not gonna fly at most schools, you will need to convince them that you are legitimately intersted in osteopathic medicine. as of now you have nothing to show for that. When they ask you why DO, what are you going to say? One thing you can not say is "well i got a 25 on my MCAT." you should try to get at least some exposure to make you more competitive.

2006: PS08 VR10 BS08 = 26O
2007: PS08 VR08 BS06 = 22M
2008: PS09 VR07 BS10 = 26Q

GPA: 3.63

Ok so I need help picking some DO schools and which ones are some of the best ones (I know thats a sensitive issue there not ranked, but its a practical question)

First off, your thread will be moved to the "what are my chances" thread as soon as one of the mods reads it.

Second, if you apply to enough schools you will get in somewhere. Your app is not so stellar that you can afford to be very picky.

Third, whether the question is practical or not, it still doesn't have an answer. There are no "best ones". Just tell us where you'd like to live and we could let you know some schools nearby. Or you could just look at this: http://data.aacom.org/data/cib/01-geographic.asp

Fourth, the word is "they're" not "there"

excuse me do not write a message that is so patronizing and you do not know the rest of my application to make that judgement, and even if my application is not stellar I have a right to at least pick some top DO schools. People pick top MD schools and I dont understand what is the problem with people who get so angry about that. There is nothing wrong with trying to pick some great schools. I dont know what youre trying to prove with some grammar mistake, that you are above me. So please if you have some sort of problem dont write on this thread.

thanks for your input! i know that my interest started from my low mcat score, but i am legitimately interested in DO schools. mainly bc i'm interested in pediatrics and i know that a high percentage of DO graduates go into family practice or pediatrics. almost everything i've done in college is related to working with children and it shows that i am committed in working in the field.

i will be a senior this fall. should i withdraw from applying this summer and start shadowing DOs for a year and apply next summer instead?

also, how does my mcat breakdown look? 10PS 7VR 8BS and R on writing. is a 7 in verbal too low? should i consider retaking the mcat?

Slim really wasn't being condescending about his answer just truthful. Usually the best way to pick a DO school is the one that you feel that you will do well in. Some schools have PBL where as other schools are system based, etc. I guess if you wanted a school with a reputation, go with one of the older more established schools. Be aware though that your board scores will probably have more to do with where you get into residency than the name of the school.

If it were me, I'd apply to some DO schools that I could REALLY see myself going to. Maybe just 5 or so. Shadowing a DO is cool and will help your app. but it really isn't crucial. Of the schools I applied to, the LECOM schools were the only ones that didn't like that I only had an MD letter. And even those schools were willing to work with me (they were going to let me talk to a DO on my interview day).

Everyone will have a different opinion on what you could potentially do, but if I was in your position I would apply to about 5 schools and see if I get some interviews.

I guess I'm thinking in the way ppl think about the md schools they low-tier to top-tier schools based on gpa and mcat, and then decide where do i want to go. So I was thinking thats how its works for DO but I guess not, so thats why I'm having difficulty deciding where.

I can only pass on what I have been told by more than one practicing physician and that is it really doesn't matter where you go to med school but where you get your residency is important. Look at some of the school sites and see where where you want to spend the next four years of your life.

PS for me I did something similar in deciding which school to go to but money was one of the primary factors.

thats great and all that you are so intersted in Pediatrics, but to be honest thats not a reason to go to an osteopathic school. Thats a reason to become a physician. They want to know why osteopathic medicine. Again, your college work shows that you are committed to pediatrics, but it doesnt show you are committed (or even interested) in osteopathic medicine if you have never even shadowed a DO. I'd recommend trying to shadow a DO pediatrician ASAP. Its good that you have so much exposure in college, and it will definitely help you answer "why medicine" cuz it seems you very interested in a specific field, but you need something, anything, that will let them know you have an interest osteopathic medicine. Have you ever seen OMM? Do you know what it is?

i dont think you need to withdraw, your application looks okay if you just shadow a DO. I think you should find one that agrees to let you shadow ASAP so that you can put it on your AACOMAS application that you will be shadowing a DO all summer. Then they'll say "heyyy this person has all these great things AND he/she is making an effort to learn more about DOs."

retaking the MCAT would make you more competitive if you did better, of course. I'm not sure about the verbal cut off but I think you are fine with a 7. You have a decent shot at gaining an acceptance if you apply now and apply broadly. if you have any questions just PM me. good lucik.

I know you weren't too happy with the answer you received about top schools, but like another poster said, Slim wasnt trying to be condescending. Here is a thread that you can browse through. Its a "best DO school" thread. There are many opinion (key word: opinions) about which schools people think are the best. take each with a grain of salt, but it may give you some insight into what your peers feel are the top schools.

Here is another useful thread in case you are interested in learning specifics about each schools. Med students were kind enough to come back and talk about the pros and cons of their school. I think this is a much better way of deciding on a school than GPA/MCAT b/c there is so much more to picking a school than that. Again, these are all opinions based on individual experiences so dont take it as the word of god.

Yeah, I think you might have some options with a 23, given the rest of your application, but you'd get the axe automatically at a lot of places too.

Thanks for your input. Someone recently told me that the EK books are really good, so I think that I'm going to see if they can help.

At the start of the summer, I was taking only Kaplan tests. My scores were a little more varied (anywhere from a 22 to 25). But the last month and a half I have taken only AAMC tests, and I always get a 23.

I think the questions on the Kaplan tests are harder, but they grade your tests a little easier. I've never taken a TPR test, but heard they're hard.

Anyways, thanks for the advice.

Undergraduate GPA: 3.19
Undergraduate BCPM GPA: 3.16
Undergraduate Non-Science GPA: 3.22

Last April I took the MCAT and scored a 21O (PS:9 VR:5 BS:7). I am retaking them on Friday! Wish me luck.

What do you all think?

I think you need to be sure about your scores before you retake. How are the practice tests going? 26+???

On 3 practice tests I am scoring about 21/22. Not much improvement but I atleast seem to be evening out the three sections:

AAMC 3: PS:8 VR:8 BS:6
AAMC 8: PS:7 VR:8 BS:6
AAMC 5: PS:8 VR:7 BS:7

I am hoping to raise that original 5 in verbal to an 8 on Friday. Getting all 8's would be good for me I guess. I would like 9's but that's a long shot from my practice scores...

Yes, evening out your scores would be nice. This would keep your 5 from auto rejecting you at some schools. However, if you do go ahead and take it in now, I'd continue studying for the next one. Your GPA is definitely not making up for a low MCAT. By no means is this cycle wasted on you, but you need to be strategic in order to get in for 09.

I've already submitted my AACOMAS application. A lot of money is riding on Friday...

Touro ny doesn't accepted sept mcat? lol i guess i got lucky this year because i took the January mcat 😛. It might be a mistake, i would call them

Good call, since the CIB says both Touro-NY and Western accept the January one! Based on the assumption that these are erroneous about the September one, that means that no school would reject the September MCAT...

Thank you CB! I wish you the same! I have a lot of good extracurriculars that I hope help me. I think 8's across the board would be good. It's more than I have ever gotten on my practice tests but as long as my nerves dont get to me I should be ok. I'm going to give that test my all and hope to God (I've been praying) that I understand everything and that nothing seems from out of the blue.

I've been taking one section of AAMC 4 each night this week. Monday was PS and scored another 8. Tuesday was VR and scored a 7. Tonight is BS... Wish me luck.

I just hope that my nerves don't get to me, knowing how much $$$ is riding on this one test...

I think what he is trying to say a 23 on july or if you wait until sept and get a 28, you would be in a lot better position as applicant even though it is late. there is really no point to take the test on Friday and make your score go up by one point or two. It is not going to help you as much.

I would not take it on fri and take it in September, but that is up to. Dont worry about getting in yet, worry about doing the best you can on the mcat.

I am taking it on Friday. No question about it. Forget the composite score... that means nothing! It's the breakdown I need to fix. My 5 from last year is no good. 7's and 8's are much better. A 21 with three 7's is much better than my 9 5 7.
 
Hi all, I am new to the site and would like to get some feedback as to what my chances are this application year.

I am a post-bacc, graduated in '06, and finished post-bacc this May.

My cumilitive GPA is 3.516; Science GPA is 3.77; MCAT 27Q (PS 8, VR 9, BS: 10).

I have excellent LOR from science professors and MDs who I work with at a research department at the state medical school. I have been involved in a number of epidemiologic and occupational medicine studies and have one publication, plus another one on the way. Have worked with a DO resident and will start shadowing a DO Family Practitioner in September. However, no letter from a DO so far.

I reside in NJ, and these are my target schools:

UMDNJ-SOM
PCOM
NYCOM
NSUCOM
KCOM
LECOM
Touro-NY
CCOM
Kansas City U.COM

I only have about 80 hours of physician shadowing (an MD) but I have been working with human research subjects. My primary concern is the lack of extensive volunteering experience, but I have been working throughout college and given that I am a nontraditional, wasnt thinking about med school back then... So what do you think are my chances of getting in?
