that was a lightning fast response, after surfing around this site for the past 2 months...i agree with the chocolate bear mod situation...personally i think you should be president. 🙂 on a different note, do you know which schools have a 3.25 sciGPA cutoff? also, is it realistic to feel comfortable about this seeing as how late my application was processed?

My application was FINALLY released on 9/24/2008 after multiple holdups with aacomas...my Overall GPA is 3.52 with a Non Sci 3.77 and Sci 3.24...i just received my august 22nd mcat score 27Q which was about 2 days late of being sent with my application, so that will probably take another week. What are my realistic chances of gaining interviews/acceptances this cycle. Thank you for your time to anyone who responds.

forgot to mention I'm Biology major/business minor i have a solid amount of EC's throughout college and I have shadowed a DO and received a letter from them, I also am currently volunteering in a Free Clinic at a local hospital, and I have spent numerous hours with my family physician in a rural town.

The only potential hiccup would be for any school with a 3.25+ sciGPA cutoff. It seems like there are a couple. Otherwise, looks good.

I've been waiting for weeks to post in here, but they took forever to post my grades from this past semester.

Okay so I just finished junior year. I'm interested in applying not during this session but next one (entering med school fall '10). I really haven't been a premed (god I hate that term) but lately I've become more disenfranchised with the idea of being an engineer. Also throughout the course of this year, I took the heaviest and hardest classload ever and my grades shot way up. Suddenly my GPA went from being too low for consideration to definitely possible.

AACOMAS GPA:

Cum: 3.45
Sci: 3.44
Non Sci: 3.47

Definitely showing an upward trend, my GPA for the past two semesters was 3.75 and 3.98 (20 credits each). I'm also a double chemical & molecular engineering, and applied math & statistics major, which aren't exactly known for being real big GPA boosters.

I've yet to take the mCAT but I'm in the process of studying for it.

Not much in the way of ECs but this is what I have

--Helped organize organ donation awareness walk at school
--Officer in my school's chapter of AIChE
--Student rep on the undergraduate program committee (sit in on faculty meetings as student rep, giving student views about classes etc)
--Starting volunteer work in an ER next week
--Currently doing research in a cell lab
--Had lots of jobs even during school but nothing medically related

I'm a NY resident, and would be interested in going to a school in the NE US such as NYCOM, PCOM, UMDNJ-SOM etc...

So I have the big three questions (Which I'm sure everyone is sick of hearing but hey thats what this thread is for)

1. What are my chances?
2. What mCAT score would I need to be competitive?
3. What else can I do over the course of the next year before the next application session (besides the obvious boost GPA as much as possible)?

I would say decent. MCAT is above average for the 3 schools, and your GPA is around average for the schools. A DO LOR helps and you also have active extracurricular activities - all of which points in your favor. Just get your premed committee letter in as soon as possible.

Now if you used large annoying fonts in your essay like you did with your last post - then your chances are 👎 . If you refer yourself in the third person in your personal statement (or worse, in person), then you have issues.

Let us know what happens and leave interivew feedback after your interviews at those 3 schools. I've also selected those exact 3 places plus the two in my state for osteopathic schools but don't expect to hear back from them until after you (haven't received/submitted secondaries yet).

1) I wouldn't bother to spend the money on that school. The odds just seem stacked against you being out of state. If I were you I would save the cash.

I took the MCAT in june 08' and scored a poor score of a 20Q. I took it again in august 08' and scored even poorly - 17N. Most of the DO and Carribbean Schools are waiting on my second attempt. Do I have to send them and will they look at my higher - relativley speaking - score or my most recent one? Should I send them?

Well I wasn't going to hold up my app., as the primary was submitted/verified/released and I have already sibmitted secondaries I received. However, I applied to both LECOM campuses and it seems as though both require letters from DOs. I already sent out the secondaries but I could always have a DO send out a LOR afterward and have it added to my file. Thanks for the input though... Were you accepted to many of the 16 schools without the DO letter? I'm still wondering how long I should be shadowing my DO if I do end up doing that... Advice, anyone?? Thanks!!

The least amount I did with one doc to get a letter was about 20-25 hours. However, I probably could have secured one after three shifts of 5 hours.

Some advice:

--Don't overstay your welcome. It's nice to establish an approximate timeframe, initially (e.g., every Friday afternoon in October).

--You have the option of telling the doc about needing a letter up front, but I think it's better to bring your CV, personal statement, and a stamped, addressed envelope to the final shadowing session. Then say that you've gained a lot from the experience and ask if she can "write you a brief letter attesting to your potential as a future physician, based on your time together" (and the materials you provide).

Engineeredout did everything he could for the premed committee letter. He met with them weeks ago. He tried calling them yesterday but was told he would be recieving an e-mail when its sent out.

first impression based on the little i know about you is that you should have nothin to worry about. I have very similar stats (almost identical) and i have received a lot of love. Is your AACOMASS verified? You may find more opposition if you are just now applying this late in the cycle, but You will definitely be granted interviews and as long as you are a normal human being and can talk to other people (ie interview well) then you should have your pick of schools by the end of the year. good luck!

One other thing.......did you only apply to 3 schools? thats not very broad.

I know that MrMattOglesby had a PS score similar to your VR score and he had interview offers at both MD and DO schools. You might wanna PM him and aks him about about his experiences. He did retake and ended up with a pretty bad ass score, but the point is he had the interviews BEFORE he brought up his score. So, Its definitely not over for you.

This doesn't directly help you, but I did know someone with a 14 PS/6 or 7 VR/13 BS who got into some great schools.

You could always take the January MCAT after studying your butt off. I would apply, making sure to ace every word of my secondaries, while simultaneously studying verbal for another test. Some schools have a hard MCAT cutoff, though. Check my signature for details.

You mentioned that English is not your first language though, right?? This may help your chances if you explain away in your apps (regarding the low VR score). I can't imagine scoring high if English were not my first language!!

I'm sure you would be able to get love from most if not all of these schools: LECOM-E, LECOM-B, PCOM, TOURO-NY, CCOM, DMU, VCOM, UNECOME and OUCOM. Some of those aren't too close to the coast, of course.

If you don't like your VR score then retake. If you think you can get into an MD or DO school with your current score then don't retake.

The "English is a second language" is not an excuse. There are thousands of applicants in your situation who managed to score higher on the VR. Some did it out of luck, some because they worked hard, and some because they retook the test.

You have to decide whether or not to retake the test. It's that simple.

After talking to some people, I was told not to apply this cycle by my advisor and a few other professors. Actually I was told I probably wouldn't get in anywhere. With that said, I still applied and am happy I did.

I applied to 18 med schools and already have 7 interview invites with one acceptance already ...YEAH!!!. Two schools have me on hold and I haven't got rejected anywhere yet. With that, I'll always tell everyone to apply and give it a go. You never know until you try! Always hav faith!!

Awww how sweet are you?! Thanks so much for the encouragement!!!! How long did it take for you to get interviews?? I sent secondaries to CCOM and LECOM-E and LECOM-B between 7 and 10 days ago...

I am going to retake the MCAT in Jan. And I did not intend to exploit the fact that English as my second language as an excuse. It is more like an explanation of my situation pertaining to the discrepancies between my scores on the different MCAT sections. BS section is pretty much reading comprehension itself. However, it is culturally unbiased in the scientific context. For Verbal section, it not just about reading and understanding the English, there is a underlying context that roots in American culture and everyday lives. More often than not, passages are about American's society, culture, politics etc. I have difficulty synthesizing those information in that short amount of time. In fact, English is the third language that I can speak and write. However, I still need to learn a lot about its cultural roots and practices.

It really depends on whether you have the money or not, but personally I'd do them all to maximize your chances if you can afford it.

MCAT is impressive and will definitely work in your favor. The only problem is that schools sometimes (often times) have GPA cutoffs around the 3.0 range. You need to be sure that you don't apply to those schools b/c you will be automatically screened out. If granted an interview I'd be prepared to explain the low GPA and maybe how you studied differently to do so well on the MCAT. Its your opportunity to show that you have matured, grown, and have learned from your earlier mistakes and will do well at their med school.

Well you still have a long time before you start applying. Its hard to say what your chances are with out an MCAT score. Your main focus should be studying really hard so you can kill the MCAT AND doing better in your science courses so you bring up that GPA. A few C+s are not going to kill you, but you can't have all C+s. Really try hard to get at least Bs in your current and future science courses.

If you start doing better in your science classes (which you still have a majority to take so its definitely possible to raise that GPA) and you do well on the MCAT (27+) AND you apply early in the cycle, you should be able to come out with an acceptance if you apply broadly. Keep up the shadowing and clinical experience and any other ECs that interst you, and definitely try to shadow a DO by teh time you apply. You can get in some good hours and also get a LOR from a DO which will be very helpful when applying. Schools love to see that you are intersted in the profession and doing what you can to learn about it.

The good news is that you are doing all of the right things and SDN is a great resource for any application questions that you have. If you stick around, you will learn lots of valuable information becuase most everybody on the pre osteo board is very helpful. If you have any other specific questions feel free to PM me.

Agreed that it is too early to say whether you have a chance or not. But several red flags right now

I don't know your science GPA since you have additional science classes listed but the 2 C+ in biology may be a fluke ... but if your other science classes are around this area, your science GPA will be too low to be competitive for any school. I suspect, based on your overall GPA, that you probably had a couple As, and mostly Bs with a few Cs. Your total GPA (as it stands right now) below average of the mean GPA of applicants last year, and is almost below 1 standard deviation of the mean.

Anyway, work on your GPA, do well on MCAT, and if you're interested in DO schools, try to get a DO LOR (it will open up more schools to you and will strengthen your applicaiton to schools that do not require it). Your shadow/"intern" at a doctor's office will most definately work in your favor.

I already applied and I'm waiting to get verified. I applied to about 11 Schools: Western, Touro-Henderson, Touro-Vallejo, AT-Still, AT-SU, LECOM, NYCOM, NYIT, PCOM, etc.

Do I have some sort of a chance? I was averaging 28-33 on my practice tests. I don't know what happened. I thought I did well on verbal, then they throw this in my face.

Definitely. The low verbal score may be a red flag or screened for certain schools but other than that I think you will probably get interviews.

I've applied to all the schools ( MD and DO) in Texas, where I ultimately want to attend. Also considering schools in California, New York, Florida. But will probably attend whereever I'm accepted. Let me kno what you guys think. Thanks in advance.

Thanks I appreciate the input. I'm really worried about the MCAT score though. I don't know what happened. Should I retake it in January and send in additional scores or just see how this matriculation cycle unfolds?

Hey everyone, need some advice... I applied to 26 allo and 18 osteo schools already and received 6 osteo interview invites. I interviewed only at CCOM so far and have AZCOM, LECOM-B, LECOM-Erie, and A.T. Still Arizona coming up soon. I have two more secondaries to fill out for VCOM and UNECOM but feel like it's probably not worth my money and time filling out since I already have 6 interviews that I already have trouble finding time and money to go to. I just submitted PCOM, all Touros, and Western so who knows if I'll get invites there too. I work full-time and only have 3 more days of vacation left for the year to take, so that doesn't cover all my interviews. It's going to be very hard to convince the boss I need to take unpaid random holidays through November. I'm already going to have to pick my favorite schools to interview at. Plus, I think I did alright at CCOM and hopefully will get in, which I should know by the end of this month. CCOM is my first osteo choice school because of Chicago. Think it's a good idea to not even bother submitting these last secondaries to schools I am not really eager to attend anyway? Save my time and money?

Yea, I've been scheduling my interviews skillfully so that each next interview lies just after the time I would hear from the previous school interviewed at. I'm going to A.T. Still Kirksville this coming Monday, but I should hear back from CCOM before the rest of the interviews. Crossing my fingers for CCOM!!!
