~2008-2009~"What Are My Chances/Where Should I Apply/What Should I Do" Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys,

Let's see how I fair out.

ACCOMAS Science GPA: 3.13
ACCOMAS Overall: 3.22
ACCOMAS Non-Science: 3.36

MCAT: 25N, lame. Just got it back, PS 09 VR 06 BS 10...I got screwed in VR (usually 8-12) and I was averaging 10-13 on PS. Don't know what happened. Considering a re-take. Oh yeah, writing sample: N

Environmental Bio Major/Chem Minor

Extra-circulars:
Shadowed D.O.
Cancer Research
Bioinformatics Research
Hospital Volunteer
Biology Tutor
Multiple Club E-Board Member
NCAA Athlete
I can fit 10 bags of M&M peanuts in my mouth
Scholarships, etc.

I already applied and I'm waiting to get verified. I applied to about 11 Schools: Western, Touro-Henderson, Touro-Vallejo, AT-Still, AT-SU, LECOM, NYCOM, NYIT, PCOM, etc.

Do I have some sort of a chance? I was averaging 28-33 on my practice tests. I don't know what happened. I thought I did well on verbal, then they throw this in my face.

Anyone else?

Sorry to ask again. My app is already in and I'm getting paranoid. Should I register for the January MCAT? I feel my MCAT score is way low and could inhibit my potential acceptance. Would this make a difference for schools that accept the January MCAT? Or should I just play this cycle out and see what comes of it?

Thanks in advance.

:diebanana: banana = MCAT

Non-trad student 33 y/o have been a firefighter/paramedic for 6 years and critical care paremedic for the past year or so.

GPA: 3.6 non sci 3.5 overall and 3.2 science
MCAT: 9 BS, 8 PS, and 6 VR (i suck)

Have volunteered at free med clinic, Shadowed 2 DO's, Observership at DO Family Practice Residencies.

Have 6 LOR's 2 from DO's 2 from Sci Professors and 2 from MD's...all pretty glowing.

I applied to 19 schools, all Osteopathic.

Think I have a chance? Thanks for your time......

I think the 6 years in critical care will help your application out. DO schools are known to be non-trad friendly. Applying broadly was a great move and being that you're verified by now I'm sure you'll get a few interviews. The MCAT isn't great but there are plenty of schools that will give you a chance in my opinion.

Goodluck!

jonniewalker and snoopy, thanks for your input....picked me up a bit.

good karma comes around you know. best of luck to you both....

I'd just say to add a few schools. I would say more, but I am brain dead atm.

I know how you feel. I'm re-taking the MCAT in January just out of principle even though I've been strongly advised not to, but just knowing there's a potential 5+ pt difference (no matter what that original number was) is definitely a killer. Oh, and I think if you've applied to enough schools your score shouldn't necessarily inhibit your chances of being accepted ANYWHERE too much (remember, it only takes 1!!), but eh, what do I know, plus it's late. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Renny,

I personally think you will either get in outright or come off the waitlist at RFU.

I would register for the Jan. MCAT and study like balls just in case....

Your dead set in for DO but if you don't want that take the MCAT until you get 30+ and wait a year and you'll be golden for MD. I wish you the best of luck.....

Thanks, Darren. I really hope for some good news this year, too. The only thing about waiting until next year is it seems to be getting increasingly harder to maintain the same motivation in pursuing this path the longer I wait (this is already my second time reapplying). My parents think I should just give up because they think my situation is pretty hopeless, but my goal is to shock them with an acceptance (anywhere, hopefully) by Christmas 😀

Anyway I personally think you added way too many schools on your list but if you're dead-set against re-applying and have the finances and time to fill out all those secondaries and attend all those interviews, you made a wise decision in choosing to apply so broadly. Undergoing a serious career change and choosing to pursue this path are major life determining decisions, so you obviously want to go where you are certain you'll be happiest 🙂 Good luck to both of us this cycle!!

You have three interviews already, at MD schools too. Why do you want to deal with the massive migrane that retaking the MCAT involves? You're doing great so far, just try to take it easy.

If you haven't done so already, I would strongly recommend registering for a retake in January. I've heard of people getting in with VR score of 6 but not 4. Even if they only look at your best total score, I think that securing at least an 8 in each section like you mentioned earlier would be most ideal, and I think you can do it!!

Does anyone know which DO schools accept combined best score? If that is the case then you would have a 25 in their eyes which should be solid if your GPA is also decent (3.5+). Strong EC's/LORs implied 😉 Good luck.

Does anyone know which DO schools take combined scores? i was just wondering since that would make me much more competitive (I took it twice with two low scores) How I wish schools looked at a person as more than scores!!! Oh Well, Thanks!

I have a 3.71 overall GPA, 3.60 science, great ECs (shadowing, volunteer, part-time jobs, executive board of AMSA-2years, etc), and great LORs. I got a 24O (10BS, 7PS, 7VR). I have applied to MSU-COM and CCOM. I am just waiting on their responses... What are your guys' thoughts? Please let me know. Thanks.

What o what should I do?!?!? Check my mdapps profile?

Unless you're really REALLY set on MSU/CCOM or bust, I'd apply to some more schools if I were you. 24 isn't killer though, and your GPA and ECs are good.

Nothing you haven't already done. You kicked ass in your masters, you applied to a broad range of schools, you've already gotten an interview, just wait and relax.

so.....
I submitted my primary on 8/26, they lost my transcripts for one of my schools...found it a couple days later. Now i still have not been verified and its 10/17. I contacted them and on tuesday they said "thanks for your email - your materials are with a verifier now" Anyone guess at a time frame? this is getting ridiculous. What do they verify? ......venting...

IamAriDO (or at least i will be if they ever release my app)

Expect a good 4-6 weeks after recieving your transcript, so it should be done soon.

Hi i guys....any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

My GPA is 3. 74.
My MCAT is 24O with an 8 on each section.
Should I still apply this year??😕

Yes you should like right now!Have you been verified by AACOMAS?If not, get on it. You still have a good chance. Why the lateness?

if money is not an issue, yes.
if money is an issue, no or just apply to the top 4 (within reason--that 24 hurts) schools you want

what have you been waiting for all this time?

With a 3.74 you could be competitive anywhere, IF you can get that MCAT up to maybe 32+.

I'd go by what public schools, MD and DO, are in your home state, because the tuition savings are DRAMATIC. If you're in California, forget it, apply DO now, don't bother trying to retake the MCAT to take advantage of instate tuition. But if you're in, say, Mississippi or New Mexico or another state with no in-state DO school and a heavy in-state preferring MD school, then it's worth retaking and reapplying. Very worth it.

Whatsup people...This isnt a specific what are my chances question, but a more general one that you all can join on the discussion about:

What do you all think of the z score = (mcat x 10) + GPA rule?

Do you think its legit? Do you have any stories (ive heard two so far) of you talking to an adcom and him/her specifically mentioning this "rule"?

Umm I've heard of X = GPA x 10 + MCAT. The two numbers are originally separated by a factor of 10. Why would you multiply the MCAT, thereby separating by a factor of 100? It makes more sense to multiply the GPA and bring the two to the same level, giving you an answer in the 60-70ish range.

As far as its use, I think this is common pre-MD talk. DO schools tend to have MUCH more variability in their applicants/interviewees/matriculants, thus rendering formulas far less effective in the pre-DO world. Furthermore, if you look in the MSAR (MD schools only), you can see that most schools have pretty solid cutoffs, below which it's near impossible to get accepted. Thus the formula stops working at a certain minimum for either variable (often around 3.3/27). So even if there was a minimum total score, it couldn't have either number below the cutoff.

So yeah, I think in the small area above a given school's cutoffs, it would be beneficial to make up for any tenth of a GPA point with an MCAT point and vice versa.

The bigger question is: Does a future physician's potential decrease with a tenth of a point in his/her GPA and become subsequently ameliorated if he/she gets an extra question or two right on the MCAT? I'm sure it does. 🙄🙄🙄

I was going to say the same thing!

Anyway even if you do the math, what is the supposed cutoff with this formula?

even if you do the math, what is the supposed cutoff with this formula?

EXACTLY! It would vary by school, but it wouldn't offer potential candidates much insight, anyway, provided they were above the minimums at that school. Again, this would be even less helpful in a DO discussion, based on the wide variation of stats of those accepted.

I have similar stats... 3.71GPA, 3.61 science, and a 24O (10BS, 7PS, 7VR). I have completed applications for MSU-COM and CCOM. I recently added Nova for which I am still awaiting the secondary. Our stupid MCAT puts us on the border from what I hear, but our GPAs are way above average. Also, considering whatever your ECs are... I would give it a shot.

Hi guys,

I am on hold for fall 2008 grades at my top choice school (MSUCOM) and I am half-way done with the semester and would like to know what you guys think will be the outcome:

Orgo II: 4.0 (after 4/5 quizzes and 2/4 exams)
Physiology: 4.0 (after 1/3 exams)
Biochemistry I: 3.5 (after 2/4 exams)
Orgo Lab: 4.0
Physical Chemistry: 3.0 (after 2/5 exams)
Cancer Physiology: 3.0 (about 30% of my grade so far)

This would be ~3.6 GPA

I would really appreciate any input. I am meeting with my academic advisor, who serves as the pre-med "committee" for physiology majors, on Monday and he is going to advise the medical school of my anticipated grades after the first half of the semester....I guess I am getting nervous about whether or not these grades will be high enough to be accepted (in spite of my s**** MCAT!)

Doesn't MSUCOM try to fill their class by December 1? That, I guess, would mean that there are slim pickin's after that. Good luck though!

hey davenp, i got put on hold for fall grades too. such a bummer. from what i was told the class is usually full by december, so im thinking we're gunning for waitlist spots, but lets hope not. im lucky to have 2 other acceptances but that means ill be out some $$ if i end up accepted to msu. id say your grades are going well, seems like a tough semester. i have a tough semester this one too with micro, pathophys, biochem, and ecology. if any class kills me it'll be the last, which is dumb but o well. i wish you the best of luck and hope we both end up in! keep up the hard work!

Yea i meant (GPA x 10) + MCAT = x

And yea i agree it works more for MD schools.

Hey guys, I got my MCAT back last week and the score was 26N (8P,9V,9B). My gpa is 3.1. I have descent ECS (volunteered at hospital for 3 semesters, shadowed a doc, tutor, mentor, peer advisor, etc.) I'm working on letters, but from what I understand I don't have to turn those in til secondaries arrive. The only thing that I'm worried about is a grade from physics 101 (D+), and my gpa is on the low side too. I am going to re-take the physics class the spring though and I'll do well...Any advice?? Should I wait til next cycle or apply and see what happens? I don't know what to do... Thanks for any help!

I think your MCAT is fine, but my hunch is to boost your grades a bit and retake that class and apply next cycle. I think you would have a shot this cycle, but would hate to see you waste alot of time and money if you do not get again. Especially cuz it is starting to get late in this cycle.

So, basically, I would get some more clinical experience, boost that gpa, and apply early next cycle.

Hey everyone. New to the site and was looking for some advice about now about my chances this application cycle 2008-2009. I have just recently sent in my AACOMAS app and should be verified in the next few weeks. i know I am applying kind of late in the process but just recently got REALLY interested in the DO programs after working in the ER back home with a bunch of DOs. So here it goes:

3.77 non science
3.25 sci GPA (C in organic killed me 🙁
3.49 overall GPA

27T (10-V, 10-B, 7-PS)

small liberal arts school in Spartanburg, SC- Wofford College- great pre med school if anyone nows about it

BS in biology and concentration in neuroscience

3 major research projects one at the genomics institute at Clemson University

200 hours shadowing at Spartanburg Regional healthcare center

Since graduation full time position as a multiple skilled tech in ER at Conway medical center

good volunteerism but no chance to take a mission trip anywhere during my time in undergrad

2 great LORs from research mentors, 1 LOR from DO at COnway medical, and from committee eval.

What do you think my chances are this point in the game. Have looked a lot at NSU, VCOM, and PCOM both campuses. What do you suggest with my current SC residency and what is there to do to improve now? DO you think I have a shot this year???? thank you so much

Yeah, MSUCOM usually does fill their class by December, BUT I was told by Terry in admissions (she's one of the counselors) that since they added 100 new spots this year that they will not be full in December, so I'm hoping! Plus, wouldn't you think that they would hold a few spots for people that they placed on hold?? I know that's wishfull thinking, but why else would they put us on hold? Why not just say rejected if they know the class is full by the time we get looked at??

Thanks Justin...I was leaning toward that but wasn't sure. Also, what do you guys think of the postbacs that some of the DO schools offer. I know PCOM and LECOM offer postbac programs, but do you guys know of more? I was thinking of applying to one of them for the year off I will have since I am a senior. I wonder if it would look bad if I applied to the same school for their DO program if/when I get accepted to their postbac? Thanks guys.

I just thought I'd throw a success story on here for some of you who aren't sure its worth trying to get in this year because of low MCAT or GPA. I didn't think I had a chance because my retake of the MCAT only came back as a 22R. My GPA is at around a 3.8 for both sciences and overall so its okay, but the MCAT is much lower than average. Tons of people told me not to bother when I got a 22 on my test (not in this forum).

Well, I just got into my #1 school (LMU-DCOM) and have 5 other interviews scheduled. I've only received 1 rejection so far so I can only assume I'd get another invite or two as well. I'm cancelling the rest of my interviews since I got in where I want to go but hopefully my acceptance with a low score will encourage some of you guys to give it a shot even if you think its not likely you'll get in.

I just about ripped my clothes off and ran through my neighborhood when I found out!

Do you think that the science GPA of 3.25 or the C in organic are going to hold me back too much with the fact that I am just now getting AACOMAS closer to being verified. Should I look at more schools or do I have a decent shot this year for NSU, PCOM, PCOM-GA, and VCOM? I just looked at the ones closest to South Carolina since we do not have a DO school of our own.

Also does anyone have any advice on how to talk to a live person in the NSU admissions office? I have tried so many time but always get to a voicemail and I cannot get a response to an email. Just figured I would ask. Thanks

I got accepted to NSU w/ a 3.15sci GPA and a C+ in one of my ochem classes so I would apply if I were you.

Good luck with that. The only response I ever got from them was by email and it took some good waiting.

Hi Guys! any comments on my chances would be greatly appreciated!

3.6
28 MCAT (8 phy, 10 verb, 10 biol)
what i think are pretty solid ec's (currently shadowing a DO, volunteered at 2 hospitals, leadership positions in many groups on campus, ~3 yrs research, a publication in lancet neurology, and MANY other small scale things)
from MI

my top choice is MSUCOM! anyway, THANK YOU!

what are my chances?

3.0 bcpm
3.1 overall.
B.S. human biology
volunteered at braille institute for 2 years.
shadowed a general M.D
Volunteered at a hospital transporting patients.

Shooting for more than 25 on the mcat in Jan. I would like to apply this cycle. I know its probably late but ill do it anyway.

To be totally honest man, I would wait and apply next cycle, the late MCAT and late application with sub-par stats is really going to hurt you. Can it be done? Im sure there are success stories out there, but think it would be more beneficial to get things in order and apply early next cycle. There is no rush.

My mcat will tell

The MCAT isn't the end all be all. I got a 36 with a 3.45 GPA and 6 years full-time ER experience as a tech and just got placed on hold at a school.

You have time against you, grades against you, limited clinical experience, and are banking all your hopes for this cycle on a good MCAT.

I know I cannot convince you to wait, but really think you should consider saving the cash.

thanks for the advice. let us know if you get in. your stats are pretty good.

Just wanted to get some input of my own... (first post to sdn, btw.)
GPA: 3.86
science GPA: 3.74
MCAT: 30O (ps10, bs9, v11)
EC's: tutor gen chem, nursing chem, phyics, physiology; TA physics and labTA physio; teach Sunday School; choir, football; shadowed 2 DO's, volunteered in ER in high school; medical mission to Guatemala.
I'm expecting great recommendations.
Just submitted my AACOMAS a couple days ago (and I'm prepared to answer the "why so late?" question).

I come from a small school, so our pre-med advisor has us apply to ~15 schools (I did 14, including PCOM, CCOM, LECOM, NSU, UNECOM, Western, PNWUCOM, RVUCOM, ATSU-Kirksville, etc.)
Any thoughts?

You look great! I see no reason why you wouldn't get multiple interview invites and acceptances. Of course you know as well as anyone that you're not late, but certainly not early, but with your fine-looking stats and EC's you should be fine. While you're waiting on your AACOMAS to be processed, I suggest you check out some of the other forum threads for secondary essay prompts so you can begin working on your secondaries. Good luck!

I come from a small school, so our pre-med advisor has us apply to ~15 schools (I did 14, including PCOM, CCOM, LECOM, NSU, UNECOM, Western, PNWUCOM, RVUCOM, ATSU-Kirksville, etc.)
Any thoughts?

Uhh...Your stats are way above all DO schools...your chances should be higher than 50 percent with all schools.
