2008 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hi everyone!

Count me in on the 2008 applying cycle.. well, I'm actually re-applying. I sure did learn a lot from applying last year and am going to make sure I do not make the same mistakes. I learned a lot from the people on this network just by reading. I think my mistake was not getting more involved and asking more questions on here. I hope this time around things will go better! I look forward to all the stress we'll be going through together!

I know the application isn't out yet, but here's something that might be helpful: if you can, get a copy of your transcripts to all colleges you have attended now so you are ready for that part on the application! 🙂

Awesome advice future, any other words of wisdom for the rest of us? What about LOR's, I hate asking a prof for an LOR only to tell them I don't need it until May/June...

Can't wait for '08!!! Woooo!!! I've had my stuff ready to go for WEEKS... I am currently in the applicant pool for early admissions to Minnesota 🙂thumbup: ) but will still have to fill out AADSAS before I find out the adcomm's decision... I made an account for the 2007 cycle (with no intent to ever apply) so I have a pretty good idea of what the AADSAS looks like... have your personal statement ready to go (less than 5000 characters!) as well as your transcripts like future said! (After I made the fake account I became somewhat paranoid that it would mess with my real account once May comes, so I asked the MN adcomm... she said no worries, people do it all the time  ) ...The term "hurry up and wait" could never be more better applied...

i couldn't agree more. its going to be a long 2 months until AADSAS opens...

gluck to all those applying for 2008 👍

I am thinking of 08 but more likely 09. I haven't had any science class in 7 years and LORs from who? my coworkers? Geez I started out thinking about this late!

It's never too late...you're actually two months ahead!! 😀

I'm in for 2008!
Already took the DATs, got that out of the way🙂
Now its just rounding up LORs and shadowing, which looks like a daunting enough task by itself.
I too will go for any school nice enough to let me in 😉

Tooth, when you did this, did you use your actual info the first time around? I made a 'fake' account too using my actual info just so I could see what was on last year's application like you did, and now I'm not sure if it will automatically move me to the 2008 application as soon as it comes out. Will I just be able to create a new account using the same info as before without any problems?

'08 cycle hasn't fully impacted me yet but I can already feel the pressure growing 😛 I currently feel screwed right now due to the LOR requirements. I realized this a bit too late and its already nearing the end of March!! I can probably secure one of the bio prerequisites for LORs but most schools (east coast) mention a LOR from a biochem, chem, math, or physics department!! I have no idea where to find one of those since i'm not taking any of those classes this semester 🙁 Might have to settle for next cycle :scared:

G'luck to everyone 🙂

edit: I'm currently a junior in college right now so I don't have my B.S degree yet. Probably another reason I should apply in '09 🙄

I also made an account on AADSAS with my real information, but I wasn't applying I just wanted to see what it was like...does anyone know if it affects anything?

you should be fine 👍

This was probably for the 2006 cycle. I used my real info. I called AADSAS and they said that all applications not submitted for that cycle are simply deleted...no automatic moving...or so they say. As far as everyone has told me, we can just go ahead and use our real info to sign up again. Good luck to you!

ok so... i have a question
i'm not planning to take the DAT until sometime in June 20s
and i'm going abroad for a field dental program from late June to mid-July..
sooooo.... would you all advise me to send in my AADSAS app early on in May anyway, and then can i just update them with additional extracurriculars and my DAT score when i get it? is that even beneficial to me to apply early without a DAT score, or should i just wait until i take the test? thanks

Also, to McSexyDDS...
you can watch American Idol on www.idollogy.com haha
i don't have time to watch it either, so i just watch it there. 😀

Okay - I got my BA in Sociology in 1998. I'm just starting to take my pre-reqs. I've got one down and think I can pull off taking the remaining 7 or 8 by the end of next Spring...

If I don't die from exhaustion - I plan on taking the DAT sometime in early 2008 and applying as soon as I can (which I guess is June). So - does that mean WHEN I'm accepted I would start Dental School in Fall of 2009?

QUESTIONS:
1. If I don't do well on the DAT the first round, how soon can I take it again and get it in with my application?

2. Anyone know of any Los Angeles based schools where I can take BioChem without having OChem as a pre-req since I'll need to be taking both classes concurrently to finish in time?

3. I had to take Intro to Chem as a pre-req to get into CHEM1 -- should I assume my Intro to Chem class doesn't count as one of my "semesters" I need to also take CHEM2 to fullfill the pre-reqs?

4. Unlike 4-year institutions, community colleges are cheap and offer more night classes -- how much less competitive am I if I take all my science pre-reqs from Community colleges?

thanks soooo much!!

Count me in for 2008, gosh I am freaking out already.. Taking DAT in Late July or early August, haven't really decided yet.

From what I remember... the only sections on AADSAS than you can update after submitting your application are your DAT score, contact information, and semester grades. I don't think you can update or add any extracurriculars. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

2008 applicant here too! We're already crawling out of the woodwork. 🙂

You are right. Once you hit the submit button, extracurriculars are locked in. The only way you can update that is to put it on your secondary apps.

Answer: Yes if you get accepted Before fall of 2009

1. If I don't do well on the DAT the first round, how soon can I take it again and get it in with my application?

Answer: You have 90 days to retake from the last day of testing.

2. Anyone know of any Los Angeles based schools where I can take BioChem without having OChem as a pre-req since I'll need to be taking both classes concurrently to finish in time?

Answer: I dont have an answer on that one, you will have check the many universities that California has to offer

3. I had to take Intro to Chem as a pre-req to get into CHEM1 -- should I assume my Intro to Chem class doesn't count as one of my "semesters" I need to also take CHEM2 to fullfill the pre-reqs?

Answer: Your Intro to Chem will not count, only your Chem 1 & 2 is taken into account.

4. Unlike 4-year institutions, community colleges are cheap and offer more night classes -- how much less competitive am I if I take all my science pre-reqs from Community colleges?

Answer: Some dental schools will take an applicant with university based credits over a an applicant with community college grades. But then again it depends on the school, call to check individually with the schools you are applying to.

Good Luck

I'll be applying for 2008. Damn im scared. I actually took a year off (well 2 years since I school wouldnt start till fall 08 if i get in). Took the time off to try and beef up my app and focus on the DAT. I hope its good enough.

Is it possible to get transcripts in adavnce? I'm not too sure how the whole thing works. For some reason I thought that the schools would have to send the transcripts directly to AADSAS and since the new cycle doesnt open till mid may I thought you would need wait until you open a new file so you can have the transcripts sent there.

I'm new to this Forum...But definitely I've been learning a lot. Eniwaiz Count me in for 2008.

the admissions committee said that the 2008 will be even more difficult than 2007 so GL all and make sure your applications are ready to go, come may 15th

I'm in for 2008, and I'm NERVOUS! I'm trying to narrow down the schools that I want to apply to. Anyone else making their lists? Where are you applying?

University of Pacific
University of Southern California
Nova Southeastern University
University of Maryland
Boston University
Tufts University
University of New Jersey
Columbia University
New York University
Temple University
University of Pennsylvania
University of Pittsburgh
Virginia Commonwealth University

or at least... those are the schools that are getting my DAT score reports in june hahaha maybe i won't apply to some of them if i hear some yucky gossip about them hahaha 😀

DAT registration + score reports for 13 schools = $375 :wow:

sanjaya is hilarious.

DAT registration + score reports for 13 schools = $375 :wow:

thats not even the most expensive part of the application. the AADSAS fee plus the schools secondary fee for 13 schools will cost well over 1000 dollars.

Hehe...I remember when I started forking out the first couple hundred dollars and thinking how expensive it was.

Three thousand dollars later I realize I was a bit naive.

I know last year they were saying 2008 was going to be rough, but for some reason, I think the DAT has been made more challenging so DAT scores might level out a bit this cycle...maybe i'm just hoping for the best...lol

even if the DAT is harder, it doesnt decrease the level competition. its still a level playing field. how "rough" the cycle is depends on how many competitive applicants there are. say a person that would have scored a 20 on the "old" test gets a 19 on the "new", and a person that would have had a 17 gets a 16. the person with the 19 is still more competitive than the 16. if they took the "old version" the 20 would still be more competitive than the 17, so making the DAT "harder" doesnt do anything to change the competition. if recent trends continue, 2008 should be the most competitive cycle yet because of the number of applications.

We really can't lose this thread....

Roughly 2.5 months left before the app opens....

Anyone else finishing up ochem II this semester? I really hate it...haha!

I am finishing up Ochem II now and with work, studying for the DAT getting LOR's and statment ready HUGE overwhelm feelings going on. I feel for everyone here on SDN it's not easy. NO LIFE and not much of a divot in the pre-DAT scores from all the studying ...:scared: I hope GOD didn't stop listening to all my whinning. "Oh, it's her again!"

Exactly.

Also...and while I still don't fully understand exactly how they scale the scores...the bottom line is that supposedly your scaled scores represent how you did on the test compared to others...i.e - it's standardized.

...If everyone is taking more difficult versions it really doesn't matter because your score is based on how others performed on the same test. For those that had "easier" tests, they were more than likely "easier" for everyone else and your score would be scaled accordingly. It's all relative.

But I'm sure we hear the same thing from year to year..."tests are getting harder," "competition is increasing" etc.

I am a 2008er as well! I've already taken the DAT a few weeks ago so I'm working on the personal statement and just waiting for AADSAS to open up!

hello everyone i am a 2008 applicant as well....

Are you guys almost ready? I am getting really nervous...I haven't even started on my personal essay. I figure it is better to try to finish strong on the semester and then get everything ready. Anyone else get the ADEA book? It is pretty handy in helping me finalize the list to apply to.
