2008 pathology applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
good morning folks--after skulking around in the shadows for a bit reading about everyone's experiences, i've finally joined.
thanks for the input, average--i second the question regarding whether you were referring to Wisconsin or Washington.
just submitted ERAS this morning---hard to believe it's already time to do this!

I have been reading posts here everyday. Now I'm a member too. I'll submit my application soon................ Good luck to u all.

I am feeling the urge to submit, but still need to revise my PS... 😛 I have most everything in ERAS except for a few bits and pieces. None of my LoRs have come in yet, sadly. 😛

It is hard to believe that it's time already... happy Labor Day!
BH

I went ahead and submitted it this weekend. I'm sure none of my letters or transcripts are there, but whatever, I figured I'm probably satisfied with my PS and such.

Good luck everyone!

average: where is the Scott&White program? Did you apply via ERAS? I did not see it this year.

Just submitted my application. Hope the best.:scared:

This is a nice forum!

No more silent readers, should we all participate

I am applying on second week of sept only, waiting to have a stronger aplication

Good luck, have a good Labor's day!🙂

I'm trying to get my PS revamped and get a few other sets of eyes to look at it. I have asked my LoR writers for feedback and they've all said it's "fine" but I feel like they're either not reading it closely or haven't read it at all. 🙂 I definitely want to get my application off though, I didn't realize until reading the forum here that I could expect so many interview offers before the MSPE goes out.

Hi everyone!

After my initial post several months ago, I've also decided to come out of the shadows...

Sent my stuff on the 4th...like most of us, it's incomplete, but I figure everything will get uploaded by their deadlines. So if they choose to read what they have and send an invite, great! If not, I didn't lose anything (I hope).

Well, good luck everyone!

🙂

No love for the VA schools? 🙁 C'mon and apply, you know you want to!

Hopefully people will post their interview experiences, etc, I know when I was looking to apply it was always nice to hear things from different perspectives.

did anybody get your application downloaded by Pitt or Duke? they never download my stuff.😕

not yet. there are still a few left for me that haven't done anything yet. as yaah pointed out, all in due time....programs have their own timelines.

any thoughts about whether a program needs "complete" application before it will be reviewed. i have one letter of rec still pending and my school transcript still hasn't been uploaded. if that's what keeping programs from looking at me i'll try to prod them along a bit, but if they just need everything before an interview and will make some decision based on a mostly complete application then i don't have to bug people any more. thoughts? experiences?

I have enough love for the VA schools for all of SDN. 😍

I think that's a great idea. I know I read the old threads with interview experiences and they had a lot of useful information.

hey tiki do you know th elink to any of those old threads? Thanks!

I think it depends on what is not completed. I am sure there are exceptions. For instance, if you did well on Step 1 and did well on your clerkships, but you don't have your LORs in, I would think some programs could possibly invite you for an interview. However, if you had subpar Step 1 scores, mediocre clerkship grades, I would think programs may want to wait until your application is complete before deciding to grant you an interview. It all depends on what part of your application is missing and how "good" your submitted application materials are.

I have been noticing some posters on here who are submitting early just to get their application in although their application is far from complete. I don't think there is any advantage to doing so. I know that some programs keep incomplete applications in one pile and all the completed applications in another file. They would review those applications which are complete. However, like I said, there are exceptions as stated above.

As far as I can tell, it is not possible to have your app complete until after it's submitted, unless I am confused about something. When I first submitted, it said that a LOR cannot be uploaded until it has been assigned to at least one program you've applied to. So it is my understanding that you have to submit to get the ball rolling? Same with the USMLE scores, they did not appear until a few days after submitting, even though I didn't have to do anything specifically to get them.

you're probably right thaitanium. unfortunately my school hasn't uploaded my transcript yet. my scores are solid, but i'd like programs to see i did well in clerkships and the basic science classes too. i've already had some programs tell me they're not reviewing my application until that gets in, so i plan to make sure that happens in the next 10 days.

I agree, no advantage in applying early but incomplete....as long as you apply within sept, mid october
By the way, I haven't applied yet, only sept 15th!

Is Allegheny General (Pittsburgh) participating in this match??? 😕

I have read somewhere.. guess FRIEDA,, Allegheny will not be receiveing applications!

You guys better check it, to not wate money....

If I am wrong, please let me know!

I got my first interview invite yesterday by email.

It begins.

To my understanding, Sean's right...my LOR that was already recieived (weeks ago) wasn't uploaded until a few days after I sent out applications...same with my USMLE transcript...so until you apply, it won't be completed. There probably isn't an advantage to applying so early, but I figured the stuff I don't have yet (basically 2 more LORs) are out of my hands...I've been following up with my writers and I'm sure they'll be able to complete and mail them in a timely fashion.

Alright, I guess I've lurked on this thread long enough. I'll be applying for 2008 as well. I have yet to submit my application, though. I'm still working on my personal statement.

welcome, Anitsirhc. 👍

here's wishing ya a successful application season.

Oooh I hadn't heard that about Allegheny General . . . I will have to keep my ears out for that one, although I guess I already wasted my money if that's the case, since I just clicked through that warning about "Your loss if you apply to a program and they're not accepting." Anyhow, I am doing rotations at one of their affiliated hospitals, so I will check it out.

Congrats on the interview offer! This is exciting!

looks like you might have wasted some money, mate. according to FREIDA, they're not accepting applications this cycle. http://www.ama-assn.org/vapp/freida/pgm/0,1238,3004112323,00.html

I guess it's a good idea to check FRIEDA before taking the risk of wasting money...

If I find out any other program, I'll post here.

😉

Hey Guys, I will be applying with you all for the 2008 year. Still trying to finish up my application, so haven't submitted yet, but plan to apply by the latest next week. All those days of procrastinating are catching up to me...Good luck to everyone.

Hmm that's interesting about AGH. . . I have to go talk to the Path dept here about some stuff anyway, so I will check this week and see what's the deal. The Chairman (Dr. Silverman) recently became chair of the whole hospital system (West Penn Allegheny General Health Sys. where I am now), so I'll ask them what's up. If I had to guess I would say that is a mistake on the website, since the vice-chairman told me it was good program and I should apply there. Typically the purpose of that spot on the FREIDA site is to show you whether you are applying for an advanced position or immediate. It wouldn't make sense to me that they would be accepting positions for 2009, which would mean you'd have to kill a year of time.

Do I need a high score to apply for pathology? My step one and two scores are around 85-90. not very competitive. I am really worried now. My step 3 is also 85. Guys, will a good program interview me? I only applied some good programs like MGH and Yale. I did plan to apply more. But do you know my chances of getting an interview from those top programs? Thanks.

It's really impossible to answer that question unless you were in the position of seeing all the applications that come into those programs this year - it changes year to year in terms of quality, volume, competitiveness, etc. And applications are far more than just board scores. I would doubt your board scores would hurt your application, they are pretty good, it would probably depend on the other factors. If you are worried then apply to more programs, you can always turn down interviews if you get them.

I was chasing you around. Thank you for the reply. I don't know how many prgrams I should apply and I guess I should apply more later if I did not get anything going.

Thanks.

Well, I did it. I submitted my application to ERAS. Let the games begin...

I kicked around the idea of greatly reducing my application list to <10 programs, but decided I need to go and see these places rather than filter them out ahead of time. So I applied to 15 programs, most of which I've talked about before. Meshes with a lot of other people's lists. Would be nice to meet some people on the interview trail - I'll post over in that thread when the time comes.

Congrats on getting your app out!!

Now the fun of checking ERAS and email every day looking for interview invites begins. 🙂

Hehe thanks! Looks like a few invites have already been offered, so the interview thread should get interesting. I'm hoping my med school has some LORs to upload tomorrow, and my USMLE transcript gets transmitted post haste...

Right now, MUSC is my new favorite program. They send out such informative emails letting you know what's going on. I got one that had general information, like what date they plan to review apps, when they plan to interview. Then I got another one where they let me know my app was complete. It's so nice to see a program that actually communicates with you. 😍

that is very nice, and i'm sure it's a lot of work to communicate that kind of info to all applicants. classy, very classy. i'll add that charleston was a very nice place when i visited a few years ago. hopefully the next email ya get from them tiki will be one asking when you'd like to come there for a visit. when you do, check out some of the restaurants down near the water - you'll think you're in new orleans with all the french-sounding names. 👍

Yeah, I hope the next one will be an interview invite. They don't review the apps until October 1st though, so I have to wait a bit. Charleston looks beautiful! I'll definitely check out some of the restaurants if I get an interview.

The only negative is that it is so far from my family. Does it make me a big baby because I don't want to live far away from my mommy?

if you visited during July or August you'd find another negative... Charleston is definately in the south, and down here that means very hot and very humid. 25 years of that crap is enough for mlw... desert, mountains, upper midwest, northeast - they all sound good me to me right now as it's still about 85 degrees with the sun down and i have to go walk my dog.

them telling you they don't even review apps until oct 1 is nice - i think we can all deal with waiting better than we can deal with uncertainty. like yaah has stated, that document tracking thing is a mixed blessing.
