If there is space, then throw it in. Just another example that makes you unique and shows that you can balance multiple things in your life.

All my answers from last year were saved into FireFox. Re-entering old information was a breeze. Adding new stuff chronologically was not. 😱

I have a question, I guess it's more general to all secondaries rather than just Drexel, but I had two clinically related volunteer activities that I did my junior and senior years of high school, that I originally didn't list on AMCAS because I know you're usually supposed to focus on activities during college. However, now I feel that I should have included those activies because they were fairly important to me, one in particular that I discuss in my personal statement, and the other is from a physician who ended up writing in me LOR later. So it is ok to list them on my secondary even though I didn't really put them in AMCAS, and just explain it to them if they ask? Thanks!

I think that they should be fine to list, from what you described. I also had a similarly significant high school experience which I included on my AMCAS, although it was a research experience and there does not seem to be space for research on this secondary.

If we have an ongoing experience, do we just write 08/09 as the end date..? It lets me save if I enter "Present" as the end date.

I'd probably not call them yet.... My AMCAS was verified 6/9, and I didn't receive the secondary until this morning.
 
how do i list that i received multiple degrees from an institution?

should i write it like this: Bachelors of Science - 06/2008; Bachelors of Science - 06/2008


also, for medically related volunteer activities, if i went abroad for several months to work in hospitals, what do i write for the "approximate hours/week"? should I write 168? (24hr * 7 days)? or should i write something else that makes more sense?

you should write how many hours per week you worked in hospitals there. I.e. (12 hours/week.....40 hours/week.....4 hours/week). Location doesn't matter...it's asking for commitment.

also, shadowing doesn't count as a medically related volunteer activity, does it? i was able to fit all my experiences in except for shadowing ones...

uggh they charged my credit card twice because their system was going nuts yesterday when i tried to pay my app fee..if you paid yesterday, you should check your bank statement to make sure they didn't charge you twice.

First of all, make sure you truly have multiple degrees. Double majors do not count as multiple degrees (unless one's a BA and the other a BS). Actually, I don't understand how you could get two Bachelors of Science from the same institution.

Anyway, if you did, the way you put it looks fine.

actually, it's weird because when i look up the degree validation catelog at my school, they granted me two bachelors of science degrees because i completed two degrees in the sciences. sounds weird though, huh?


shadowing doesn't count as a medically related volunteer activity, does it?

I'm not sure about other schools, but at my undergrad...obtaining double-degree means you have to take like 6 core classes more than double-majoring.

For what its worth, I put shadowing as medically related activity.

Did walking behind the doctor provide any benefit to the patients you saw or to the hospital? If not, then you weren't volunteering.

no it doesnt count, however u can put it under the other or extra cirrcular experiences section if u wish.
 
Wow, I'm feeling kind of nervous because I haven't gotten this yet. Anyone else in the same boat =/

I think I ended up counting it that way. I mean, it's not exactly a job or anything and it is certainly medical!

Ive heard drexel likes non-trad applicants, any truth to this? Also seriously they get liek 14k apps....how do they really sort through all of them...do they just put liek 1k apps in a sack and burn it? lol. Besides the obvious things all med schools like, is there something that drexel really emphasizes more then others?

Also i know like temple is in a horrid area and basically the ghetto...hows the area in drexel? A lot of things to do? A quiet suburb? Middle of the ghetto?

I can't tell you for sure whether Drexel "likes" non-trad applicants, but I can say that we have a wide range of students. There are plenty who took the usual route, but there are a number of career changers, older students, students with families, and everything in between.

I also can't really tell you how the selection process works, but I can assure you that the folks in the admissions office are great (especially the dean). I think it's safe to say that nothing gets tossed in the fireplace.

In terms of emphasis, Drexel really prides itself on the unique curriculum. Whether it's the small-group-based PIL program or the symptom-based IFM program, Drexel puts a lot of emphasis on how material is presented to students.

Regarding location, Drexel is in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia. The area is very suburban and quiet with tree-lined streets and lots of grass. East Falls has a decent set of stores/restaurants and sits on scenic Kelly Dr. and the Schuylkill River. We've also got Fairmount Park nearby, so that means plenty of outdoor fun if that's your thing. If you're more into the nightlife, Manayunk is a very trendy area where many students live (and/or socialize) and Center City is a short train/bus/cab ride away.
 
i called drexel, they said you should get a secondary 4 weeks after you submit...too long
 
Wow...Drexel charged me 6 times for the secondary fee on my credit card, so they took an extra $375. WTF!

Nope...I tried only once on my credit card. I tried on other credit cards too, but those didn't get charged while mine did.

call them and say "since i paid 6 times, better put it for my first years tuition"..maybe theylll just let you in👍:idea::laugh:

I've been very intrigued by their personalized curriculum. I was wondering if there are any widely held student views about them, i.e. is one of them generally regarded as "better" (perhaps for applying to certain residencies?)? or is one or the other harder? I noticed that you only have to apply for the small-group one, which sort of makes sense if they're small, but it still makes it seem more demanded... Which one did you choose and why?

Hey, I think this may have happened to me too. I tried submitting one evening and it kept giving me error messages and told me to try again later (I think I did it three times before a successful payment). I didn't spend $225 in the last day that I didn't know about and that's the pending balance on my CC. Did you call them? Did they fix it? Grrr. I'm in major debt from this whole process as it is, lol.

Well the people in PIL think their program is the best, and the folks in the IFM program feel the same way about theirs. The statistics show, however, that students from both programs do equally well on the USMLE exam. After the first two years, everyone gets lumped back together again, so there are no differences when it comes to the clinical years. Some people say that the thinking style that you use in the PIL program gives you an easier transition into the clinical years/residency, but I don't think there's any data to prove it.

The "application" for the PIL program is a formality. I've never heard of anyone with a real interest in the curriculum being rejected. It's definitely not for everyone, and a number of students each year switch to IFM after the first few days of classes.

I, myself, chose the traditional IFM program. Why? It's what I'm used to. I personally didn't feel like medical school (with all the challenges) would be the ideal time to switch things up.

I contacted the director of admissions, and she said that they are aware of the problem and are trying to fix it. You should see refunds made to your account in the next couple days.

haha so I called to check the status of a secondary and a few hours later they sent it to me. Maybe those who are waiting should bug them for a secondary too! Goodluck!
