2009-2010 Grad School Interview Invite Thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Besides anxiously awaiting admission decisions, I'm curious what people's day jobs/studies are?

well normally I am a post-bacc research fellow at the NIH, doing basic and clinical science research in MS 🙂

BUT since the government are pansies and like to tkae off days whenever they get an excuse (i.e., a little snow fall) I havent worked in well over a week and counting (no work rest of the week)

Yes I am also wondering as to Lehigh Counseling Ph.d

I have a friend who received an invite from Lehigh some days ago - not sure when, I think it was less than a week though. I'm also not sure as to how it came in. I was told the date was in March, so they may not be in a hurry to send all the invites.

Good luck!

Do you know if the phone interview is done as a preliminary screening before an in-person invite is extended, or if Uvic is only doing phone interviews?
I believe that UVic is only doing phone interviews this year, due to the crowds expected in BC for the Winter Olympics. (Couldn't tell you where I read that, though. This whole grad school application process is doing ugly things to my brain. Sorry. 😳)

Would the person(s) who got an invite for New Mexico please PM me their POI? Thanks!

Hi,

Rejections/Interviews are supposedly two weeks past due. Anyone heard one way or another. Specifically for the SF campus.

I think the Alliant campuses are doing those from January until May, so it might not be "past due" yet. I do know that their applications processing center has been swamped since before the application deadline, so they're behind in completing applicants' folders and routing them to the other campuses. Might be a while until anyone hears from them...

Yes, that was a depressing read. . . . Yes, I'm sure a top 25 ranking helps if one wants to be an academic. However, I think a better indictor of one's ability to enter an academic career after receiving a doctorate would be to find out what percentage of the program's students end up in academia. And, if working at a tier 1 research university is important to you, find out how many alums are working in them.
That's a pretty rough article. At least we'll come out of grad school with a marketable skill as well as the alphabet soup. This paper doesn't look so much at job prospects as it does at the whole concept of ranking schools US News and World Report-style and the pseudo-science thereof. It's a cool paper: http://www.temple.edu/psychology/Clinical/Links/ClinicalRankings.pdf

Case Manager at an agency that provides supportive housing for individuals with psychiatric disabilities and substance abuse. Also, finishing up my Masters.

Ok so I just got an email to attend 1 of 4 Graduate School Open Houses at UNCG. The email is not specified as a psychology thing, and it says it is "an opportunity to explore graduate education at UNCG, to take a tour of the campus, to meet with current graduate students and representatives from The Graduate School, and to ask questions that you may have about graduate programs, admissions and financial aid. In an effort to provide personalized attention, we are limiting attendance to the first twenty people who RSVP. Imcludes an overview of the UNCG's graduate programs, the admissions process, building a strong application, a question and answer session, and a tour of campus. Please note that these events will NOT include a meeting with an academic department representative unless you personally set that up with the academic department." IS THIS AN INTERVIEW?? Or just a mass email to anyone who applied to learn more about the grad school? Please help!

I received an interview invite from my POI like a week ago at UNCG, but I also received this email.

I have a feeling this is just a general open house for ALL potential graduate students that is sent to anyone who submitted an app.

Agreed. It is not an interview. It is just an open house to familiarize you with the university. It is hosted, most likely, by the office of graduate studies.

so i am about to give in and email a POI that i haven't heard from yet. we had a good correspondence in the fall and i was *really* hoping to get an interview with her. i'm not entirely certain that the school is done offering interview (UMass-Boston) but people on this forum got invites last week and i did not.

i know some of you have been through this and have sent inquiries to POIs regarding whether or not you are still being considered. what did you say? how did you phrase it to not be intrusive? i really don't want to bother her...i just want to know whether or not i have a shred of hope.

As far as I know, each POI is giving out their own invites personally. Do you know for sure if your particular POI gave out invites? U Mass also gives out invites as little as a week before interviews (and says they'll be offering them until Feb 17th), so don't lose hope!

That being said, I'd just say you're still very interested in the program and were wondering if invitations to interview were still being extended. Try to make it as short and sweet as possible while still being polite; I think they are more likely to respond and do so quickly that way. Or you could just call and ask the psychology dept secretary if you're scared of annoying them or something. They'll either tell you yes, no, or to contact your POI.

Good Luck!

Received an invite to Nova
Clinical PhD
Concentration: Clinical-Neuro
😀
Interview Day: 3/8

Good to know the interviews are still rolling in! I just got one to a 1/15 deadline program today.

Hope is still alive, everyone!

for anyone who got an invite for an interview with SDSU joint program with UCSD in the behavioral health/health psych program....if you don't mind, could you PM me your POI- I'd reaaally appreciate it! thanks!

I was invited for an interview at UIC for the community & prevention program on February 3 from POI via phone call. Apparently about 15 people were invited for an interview and they had more applicants than ever before. Not sure if they will extend out more interviews...good luck!

Has anyone heard from NYU Psychology & Social Intervention?? or Columbia Developmental Psych??

If you don't mind, could you PM me POI who contacted others for interview? And I wonder whether 15 people are invited for only community&prevention or whole department.

Thanks for your info anyway. I appreciate it. 🙂

Just received a call from POI for Univ. of Cincinnati!!! Interview is 2/26
🙂

This is NOT an interview. I received an invite a couple weeks ago from my POI. It is simply an open house.

Anyone who interviewed hear anything yet??? It's been a while...

I ran into a GMU applicant at an interview last week, and she had already heard from her POI (accepted). My POI said that decisions will be made in a couple weeks, so maybe the timeline varies by professor...?

Anyone else with news from Houston? I haven't heard anything about it since PrisonPsych's post...

Here's what I sent in a similar situation:

"Hello Dr. So-and-So, I'm sorry to bother you during this busy time, but I was wondering if you might be able to let me know where you are in your interview decision process. If you could send me a quick update, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much for your time!"

Not sure it's the greatest email in the world, but I did get an interview invitation, so at least it didn't burn any bridges or anything. Hope this helps!

Alright the snow day probably kept many people in the admissions office out of work along the east coast. Hopefully they'll be back at work tomorrow sending out some invites! 😀

I got an invite today!! Someone's still working despite the snow..and I'm sure tomorrow and Friday there will be way more for everyone

For anyone waiting on possible interview invitations from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (clinical PsyD program)... they're hoping to get e-mails sent later this week, but they're experiencing a lot of difficulties as a result of the snowstorms, so that timeframe may slip. They'll be offering several interview dates, for those with scheduling concerns.

Would those of you who have received invites from Bklyn LIU mind pm'ing me your POI? I'm still holding onto hope that I'm in the running but have just found out that one of the Professors I listed is not taking on any new students..

thanks!

Has anyone heard from UMSL recently? I called last week and was told that invites were still going out, but I'm getting nervous given the fast approaching interview date.

I'm really starting to lose hope...not hearing a damn thing from the majority of my schools and the ones I have heard from have not gone well 👎

If the folks who got the invites to the UCSD/SDSU JDP experimental psychopathology track wouldn't mind pming me their POIs I would hugely appreciate it...I can also just tell you who my POI was.
Thanks and congrats!

So, I have a school on my list that does not do interviews and that releases decisions in March... I'm tempted to send an email respectfully letting them know that they are my first choice (they are), but I don't think that would be prudent. Without an interview system, I just can't imagine how they pick who they accept though!

Anyone else have an interview in the northeast this weekend and concerned about their flight getting canceled? My flight to Pittsburgh leaves tomorrow at 6:30 am :xf:

They said they understand travel delays and/or cancellations, but I'm so excited to go interview there that I really hope that doesn't happen!

Yes -- I'm concerned about flight cancellations, and about the conditions if/when I arrive. One of the few things I find more stressful than grad school applications is driving in snow, so this is *not* what I need right now.

Could anyone who got an invite at VCU counseling say if they were contacted by the POI or the someone else? I've been waiting to hear from them as well. And what's with the two days for interview? Is it just one day with two options or a two day interview? Thanks!

Your stats (GRE, GPA, etc.) have to speak for themselves.
And, you better have written a killer SOP.

Good luck!!!

Does this school utilize POIs? If so, maybe you could look up your POI's research. Then, if you are trying to access a book chapter or article, and you cannot find it, you could always contact the POI stating that you're an applicant to his or her program, and you were wondering if they could email you the article (book chapter) that you are interested in reading. . .

That would show your interest in the program without seeming desperate or impatient.
