This is all true but the med school isn't in Cambridge.

Cambridge, Boston, blah blah. It's a bridge that separates the two, not some insurmountable barrier. The academic atmosphere, however, is in Cambridge. Boston is a great city, but it doesn't feel like a university-ish area. I love the contrast between the two.

In any case, I was referring to the fact that, if one ends up going to HMS, you DO end up getting access to ALL the resources in that area. The great hospitals. The research. The communities. The diversity. It's not just the Harvard name that makes the school great; location, location, location isn't just a real estate mantra. Having so many schools in close proximity DOES matter in the sense that there's a real sense of academic cooperation and it DOES benefit medical students. Medical students aren't necessarily restricted to just their medical studies; everyone wants to be able to have some freedom. In an area with so many students, almost anything that student a wishes to do is available.

As for having MIT next door - sure, it's not a huge deal if you're planning on just going into practice (although those great hospitals still matter), but if you have any inclination toward research or other studies, how can it possibly hurt? Having two of the top institutions in the world literally next to each other means that you get the best of both.

Hey guys, any suggestions where to live?
I dont have a student host this time >.<

When is your interview bannie22? Unless you come during our holiday break (12/20 - 1/4) there will be someone who would love to host you. There might be also some people staying in Boston over the break, so just let us know.

I would highly encourage staying with a student host. It was an outstanding experience!

you don't need MIT next door to do research. thats what i meant. if i went to upitt, theres tons of research there...washu...northwestern..etc.
theres tons of great research going on everywhere. having multiple schools doesnt really change much since you can only work in one lab anyway.

There are many people who have a specific research interest in mind. MIT's research fits different niches than what might be available at Harvard.

that is true, but at any halfway decent research medical school, id imagine a medical student could find good/interesting research that suits them well. it's not like you're going for a phd where you might be looking to work with someone specific, although id imagine some md's have this in mind (probably much more rare)

I interview on the 22nd of decemeber, and need to stay somewhere on the 21st? can any nice cool harvard student please take me in.. i really really want to stay with a student host because thats how i learnt all about the schools ive been to!!!

Getting hostile up in here. I don't need to prove to anyone why I like Harvard or why I'd want to visit there. And I don't think anyone should have to. Obviously we all have our reasons for liking the schools we applied to. No reason to question those motives.

And yes, we basically all realize that we won't be getting an interview there, but there is a glimmer of hope left in January. Might as well be hopeful huh? It's not hurting anyone.

i wasnt trying to be hostile. anyway, i wouldnt get too down, harvard does interview a large percentage of their app pool. only other school that i saw interviewed more was washu.

Well apparently Harvard cut down their interview numbers this year, or so I read. Makes it a bit harder to get an interview, kinda sad. But anyway, even though I do really like Harvard, I'm ok with not getting an interview here. I really have no right to complain about how this cycle has gone for me, and I know that we will all end up where we are supposed to. 🙂

Cut me out of the pool pre-primary.

You knew of the secondary prior to applying? I didn't. I finished that beast and got an interview. Thank god, too, because a friend of mine submitted that secondary and got rejected literally an hour later.

KSMI you have too many acceptances anyway😛

I suggest you take up anything but WashU cause that seems to be the only place we both interviewed at... and I dont have an acceptance yet😉

i've seen some mdapps with ppl getting into hopkins/mayo/northwestern/washu etc...but still no harvard interview.

they will always remain a mystery, and i think they do that on purpose.

And then you see the people who have Harvard/Hopkins/Northwestern/WashU, but no Mayo.

true, but mayo is in a league of its own. getting an interview there is soooo tough

Mayo wasn't meant to be some magical school out of those 5. Substitute with any other top 20 school. Or any other medical school PERIOD.

Stuff's weird.

Tough? I'd call it more random than anything else, considering they don't even read your PS pre-LOR request. What a bizarre policy.

true. i think of mayo/stanford as the super, super tough to get in. percentages are so stacked against you. true for other schools of course, but those two are even tougher.

This is not true. They read the PS before and after the LOR request. I called Mayo to confirm this because I was a little insecure about my PS (because of a spelling mistake) and wanted to know if they had read my PS to get the LOR request.

Cheers!

Why is this all Mayo?

Anyway, how does the Harvard process work?
PS + LOR pre interview?
or no LOR yet?

ALSO. I AM INTERVIEWING ON THE 22ND. I NEED A PLACE TO STAY ON THE 21ST AND I WOULD LOVE LOVE LOVE TO STAY WITH A STUDENT HOST. IF THERE ARE ANY HMS STUDENTS STILL IN BOSTON. PLEASE PLEASE PM ME. I WOULD REALLY BE IN GRATITUDE IF YOU COULD TELL ME ALL ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
22ND DEC IS ALSO MY BIRTHDAY. SO IT WOULD BE THE PERFECT PRESENT. PLEASE HELP ME. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

Better than the MBTA bus is the medical school shuttle...freer and definitely cleaner. 😛 Harvard Square is right next to Central Square. It won't make that much of a difference.

For the weekend morning trips to campus (to study, perhaps), I'd have to disagree. The med school shuttle is great though, but it's nice to have lots of transport options. The shuttle also goes from Central, going back into Harvard adds more time to the trip. And, compared to the NYC subways, MBTA is a clean dream. 🙂

i love harvard so much it hurts.

i thought i can finally get some sleep without daydreaming abt harvard for a few hours each night... and now its just gotten worst. it was just so amazing. my second interviewer was sooo spot on. this is really the right fit.... the true fit... veritas. oh gosh. im going to cry so much harder in march, whether i get in or not..

thank you harvard, i am extremely honoured to be invited, extremely honoured to be commended, extremely honoured.

I'm mostly just amused by his ability to daydream at night. Bravo Sir.

Your comments are overly emotional.

Does this scare anyone else? I mean damn.

yeah guys! i do apologize if i was too passionate! =) dont be afraid of harvard or anything! it was just a really amazing place. my student host, my intervewers, and the admissions committee lady were just really nice peeps!

i look forward to march! when my fate is decided and i cry no matter what. (i really hope i cry tho)
its been a while since things mattered.

a good example is pep guardiola and his success story. purely amazing. anyone watched the vid of him after they won the club world cup? 6 titles in his first year as coach.... come back from 1-0 down... haha. his tears were so inspiring.

Is it necessary to spend 2 of your 3 posts on SDN on trying to prove I am a "she-dude"?
I think thats quite an honour too! 😀😀😀

I think there should have been a comma in their: "Banny's a she, dude."

In regards to my overtly emotional comment, I have a hard time believing that you're excited about Harvard's medical education as much as you're excited about the Harvard name. I didn't apply to the Harvard NP program because I felt that it wasn't as rigorous as the HST track. I still believe that there are MD programs that rival, if not surpass, Harvard's NP pathway in terms of academic rigor. Although, the HST track is probably the best two-years of medical education available, and the latter clinical years are equivalent (and excellent), in either track.

Does anyone know how many actually receive acceptance letters from HMS? I know their class size is 165, but are there more acceptances given out due to the fact that there may be some students who defer or choose other schools?

this has been discussed at length in this thread... i think the consensus was that they accept about 200? actually, there might not have been a consensus, really... either way, i would suggest reading the thread; that discussion should only be a couple of pages back

I looked back through the posts about this...but I don't think anyone determined how many are interviewed/accepted for New Pathways specifically.

Not that any of this really matters anyways...but it's something to bide our time until March I guess..heh.

Just found this.
240 acceptances (supposedly).. Not sure if the data are accurate though.

:smack:

both of these things were already posted-- (1) no one knows for sure how many acceptances will be handed out, and (2) that link- posted and then someone commented with more up-to-date data

EDIT: the discussion is on pages 15 and 16 with links to where people found data

It is totally random - it has to be. I have acceptances to Mayo/Hopkins/Wash U. and had the Harvard interview, yet UPenn only just did an interview invite and Stanford is ignoring me (I submitted my apps pretty early in the summer). I'm sure there are too many qualified applicants for all the schools, and it does end up being random. I have a good friend from college who started at HMS in the NP program this year. He got into Hopkins and Harvard, but no Columbia. There is seemingly no rhyme or reason, unfortunately. But good luck to everybody - anybody posting in this thread will no doubt get into quality schools and become a good doc.
