You could probably make the case for it being academic. EM physicians teach residents and have a chance to do some clinical research in addition to their duties as a clinician.

EM physicians who work at an academic medical center are in academic medicine. Those who work at a nonacademic, community medical center are not in academic medicine. Specialty and type of practice do not necessarily depend on each other.

The exact same thing happened to me. I did research and took a class with one of my writers. I called them, she read through my letter and saw that I actutally took a class with them and completed my app on the spot. She was pretty nice.

Good Luck, I'm sure it will work out.

I think I might be withdrawing my application from NYU after all since they are sticklers about research mentors!! *sigh* There goes 100 dollars....

I just checked the status page and it says: "Final Decision Pending - All final decisions will be sent on March 3rd.." Do they really wait until March 3rd to send interview invites?! Have they started rejecting people yet?

i do not believe that they have started to send out interview invites or rejections to anyone yet. when were you complete?

i'm still under review, but i was complete pretty late (7/28).

either way, you seem to be further along the process than most of the rest of us. good luck!

Dude, I hate to say this but I think it's bad news for you. I may be wrong.

I'm still "under review."

same status here. sounds like a "hold" message to me. bleh...

this is what i got from skimming through last year's thread:

- the people who initially got offered an interview had an "under review" status until they got the interview status update. the first interview invites were sent on 9/15.

- it seems that the "final decision pending" message is a pre-interview hold, NOT A REJECTION.

i guess the best thing to do if you get that status is to be patient and hopeful. you still have a shot!

thanks ek1099. good to know!

Thanks for the info ek. By the way, how would you all interpret a "pre-interview hold?" Does it usually mean that they are waiting to compare you to a larger applicant pool, or does it mean you are kinda on the borderline of getting an interview vs. getting rejected? I know this may vary, but just wondering what you all think this means.

Hey, I have really no idea about this, so take it with a gain of salt, but from what I understand, it's a "maybe later" pile. Any other thoughts on this?

only on SDN...

😛

i'm still under review. blah.

I was complete on 7/31 and am still Under Review. Good to know that's considered a good sign. I've heard a whole lot of nothing the past few weeks.

Mine said 'Final Decision Pending' a day or two ago and today it says 'Under Review'.

erg. I just got an email saying that my letters needed to be on letterhead. my people didn't put them on letterhead???!!! what were they thinking? So if they don't have the letters saved I am just going to pull this application. 🙁

seems like some kind of glitch

i'm under review again as well. maybe they have a few reviewers, and we're just going through each of them and then they'll determine if we interview or not?

seriously...i hate to read too much into these status messages!

Hi where is the status page? I just got the completion email a couple of weeks ago but I do not know where to check status. Please help.

Nvm I figured it out....it says complete-under review....sigh

Hi, basically that spells out rejection..its a nicer way of putting it. I have a friend on the admissions committee at the school. Your application should still state complete - under review. I'm also an applicant and was really early in the cycle....I've heard back from them regarding my secondary, and interviews go out in 3-4 weeks. Hope this helps.

Uh, not necessarily....For me, I went from "Application Complete - Under Review" to "Final Decision Pending - All final decisions will be sent on March 3rd.." ....however, I checked today and now I'm back to Application Complete - Under Review" .....I've given up trying to figure these ad coms out...😴

Application complete-Under review for me.

i agree, aphios. my status flipped back and forth as well--there's no point in stressing over something that's completely out of my hands for the time being. 👍

yeah, my status said "final decision pending" but is now back to under review so it seems like FDP is not a final thing at all

Mine is back to the "under review" status now. They are being quite indecisive aren't they lol?

Yes, it seems that this is the case. There were several people who reported "the final decision pending" and then received interview invites way after those who were complete earlier.

NYU seems like one place where "pre-interview hold" is not a silent rejection as it is at a lot of other schools.

Are we really not allowed to copy and paste our essay responses?? That would be super annoying...

Is the application going to get rid of any formatting (paragraph, etc) when I submit it?

Also, with regards to the AMCAS Fee Waiver e-mail that we're supposed to forward to them-does it matter if the e-mail that I received the fee waiver notification is different from the e-mail I put down on my application? When I signed up for FAP, I gave them my personal e-mail address, which is different from the one I'm using for admissions...it won't matter, right, since the e-mail has my AMCAS ID #?

Does anyone know if they extend secondary applications to everyone or do they evaluate the AMCAS applications first before sending invites to complete the secondaries?

This may have been answered, but where is the "check status" page? I didnt have one linked to my "complete email"

I had hard enters for paragraph breaks but it seems like it disappears when you submit.

They send secondaries to everyone, far as I know.

It's in the first e-mail they sent you, inviting you to fill out the secondary in the first place. http://tools.med.nyu.edu/amcassupp/

Can someone PM me the prompt so I can update it on the first post?

Hey Guys, I submitted a few days ago and put research down as my projected future goal because I want a career that incorporates research and patient care. I wrote a whole essay about how I want to do basic science, clinical research, and patient care. I realize now that what I was describing is actually closer to academic medicine 🙁

Do you think I should call them and ask them to change it on my application and look stupid or leave it and possibly look naive when my application is being reviewed?

If I am making a big deal out of nothing, let me know about that as well.

They will understand from your description what you meant (which is indeed academic medicine; I think research meant just research). FWIW, I think others probably made a very similar mistake. It's not like you chose something that makes absolutely no sense. The essay part is what matters, and IMO, if that's well-written, the box you checked above won't matter.

That does not mean you are rejected.
Once you get rejected. Your status reads "Rejected"
It sounds cruel 🙂 but it is what it is and it actually says "rejected"

i dont think they can officially reject until march 15 though right? if thats so then they wouldnt display that status until then and put a different, temporary one up, something like "final decision pending"

You should be fine. That's what I plan on doing. Let me know if you find out otherwise.

Thanks, I did that at first, and then I also sent them a jpeg file of my FAP homepage, since the FAP e-mail didn't have my name, just my AAMC ID. Oh well, now they have both 🙂

Anybody know where primary care would go? Preventative medicine and community medicine...maybe public health?

Thanks 🙂

do you want to work in a hospital, clinic, private practice? i think that determines what you choose more than the specialty..

Clinic or hospital. So clinic would be public health and hospital....hmm depends if it's affiliate with a university right? If it is, then academic medicine...
