Also, check out the libraries! Especially Thompson library. From that library, you are a short walking distance away from High Street, I believe. There are lots of shops and restaurants on that street. We ate at Potbelly's Sandwiches...yum!

As for things to do - are you looking for walking distance or will you have a rental car? If you want to get an overall view of the campus, you can hop on the Campus Bus (which is free) and ride it around campus. They all go in loops, so you can easily end up back where you started. I haven't been there yet, but the Main Library is newly renovated and supposed to be absolutely beautiful. The Rec facility is awesome, as well, and I think they might let you in to take a look at it. If you want to explore some neighborhoods, the Short North and Grandview are both nice areas with some unique shops/restaurants/etc. I highly recommend a stop at Jeni's Ice Cream (shops in both the short north and grandview) - Expensive but well worth it.

No rental car, so just walking distance. I go to a small undergrad so I hadn't even thought about campus buses, thanks for reminding me 🙂 Sounds like a good way to get a feel for campus without lugging my stuff all day. And I do love ice cream so if Jeni's is within walking distance I will probably have to check that out...

I just got a really generous scholarship letter from ohio state. It is really making me reconsider being so far from home.

ice cream is good no matter the weather 🙂 plus I go to school in Iowa and we get a high of -1 tomorrow so 20 looks pretty good at the moment.

Unfortunately, no. And the cab from the airport to campus is pretty pricey (it was $25 last I knew). If you are staying with a student host, they will often offer to pick you up at the airport, but no guarantee. After interviews, people often share a cab to the airport or sometimes one of the students will volunteer to drive people to the airport.

If you feel adventurous, you could try taking the city bus, but there isn't a route that runs from the airport to campus (there is one on the map, but it only runs during student breaks). The only other route that runs from the airport involves several transfers. The buses also tend to run only every 30-45 minutes or so, so with having to transfer a couple times, it could take you quite awhile to bus it across town. But - if you're interested - check out www.cota.com.
 
So I received a rejection letter about a month ago but I just got offered an interview invite. Anyone know what's that about?

Just wondering about the $25 fee that comes after acceptance... Is this supposed to be sent in only if we are 100% sure we're going to OSU? What's the deal?

They may have changed it, but they used to want it sent in within two weeks. Please note: this is a fee charged by the Graduate College, not a fee assessed by the College of Medicine. I don't think you lose your spot or anything if you don't pay it by whatever deadline they gave you, but you might want to call the admissions office and ask them for a definitive answer. They understand that people may have multiple schools that they are trying to decide between.

Yeah, my wonderful student host offered to pick me up from the airport which is awesome! I was just trying to decide what to do about getting back to the airport. Doesn't sound like the bus is really a good option so I will just suck it up and take a cab. Thanks for the help!

It came in our acceptance letter - a form to fill out and send with $25. It said due in May and is non-refundable. So I'd say only fill it out when you're sure you're going.
 
no waitlist movement here...still "deferred-decision pending" status. keeping my fingers crossed.
 
By the way, sportygirl10...do you happen to remember when they said the waitlist would start moving? I thought that they had said mid-January... but, at this point, I am thinking probably not until May?? :xf:

You want to cut corners by saving $25 on something as important as this? But you've already blown >$3,000 on the application process. What's $25?

As mentioned the money is not due until May and even on interview day the assistant dean said that if you are not sure they advise you not to pay the money. just make sure you did the part of the acceptance that confirms the acceptance.
 
Congratulations to all with scholarships!! No happy envelope for me, which means that I'll probably withdraw soon. 🙁 OSU will always have a special place in my heart as my first acceptance. Good luck, everyone!

That's the thing-- even if they offered it to me, I don't think I could accept it. That probably means that I should withdraw now and give the spot to someone else, eh? This makes me extremely sad. 🙁

If you're 100% sure you won't go to OSU no matter what, then by all means withdraw now. However, if you still have some issues to kick around or there's some doubt in your mind, there's no need to hurry. Waiting until May 15th to withdraw does not make you a jerk if you are unsure.

Thanks for your input! I sought more advice today, and I was told to hold on just in case I find a deal breaker at the school I'm leaning toward. Blame the system, they say. It's just hard because I'm a reapplicant, so I know how heart-wrenching it is to be the one waiting for people to withdraw. It would also have been nice to have the peace of mind of knowing exactly where I'm going. I think I'll wait at least until the end of February.

For now, I'm still in! Yay Buckeyes! 👍

Based on my experience, very few schools seem to actually give an outright rejection. They sort put you in a "you're a competitive candidate but your applicatoin has been placed on hold for further review" and then you don't hear back from them until March. Are you sure you weren't waitlisted?
 
To those of you who received scholarships:

Did you send in the letter? Did you do anything other than click "Accept" on your status page?
 
Has anyone received their OSU email address yet? or do we not get that until we send in the application fee?

I know a number of people earlier in the thread got emails. i don't know if they paid the fee though.
 
First of all i know that as a med student i will almost never have time to have a decent social life but...

1. Coming from California i am curious what the social life in columbus is? (columbus in general for a person in their mid twenties) i kind of have a stereotypical view in my head for all of the mid-west, so could someone please give me a picture of what the reality is?


2. What is the situation specifically for med students? I went to a college town where everything was centered around my undergraduate institution. is that what the social life for ohio state med students like? I think that was fine when i was an undergrad but i am not sure how much i would appreciate being a med student and every social place i go to be overrun by undergrads. Can someone please comment on this?

all information is welcome from current students or people who know the area or even from interviewing. Somehow i was so nervous about the interview (since it was my first that i never even thought of such matters)
 
Casillas - The med school is more or less integrated with the undergrad campus. However, there are 2-3 different worlds for the nightlife. The bars that line high street are fun, probably much cheaper than cali and since there is so many there's a special / happy hour going on every night of the week. If you want to branch out from there (the campus is like a town in itself), you can go downtown and mingle with more "young professional" types and not as many college kids. A favorite of mine is a new piano bar that just opened. Also, there is the grandview area which is east of campus where there are many fantastic restaurants... I go here weekly for "trivia night". There are so many options here... the cultural life is no nyc, not gonna lie. But there is plenty of fun to be had.

Oh, and not everything about the ugrad life is bad. In case you haven't noticed we're fanatic about our sports teams 😀 Football Saturdays are insanely fun, and even more so when you have tickets... so if you come here look into that.

and edit: learn how to play cornhole / become good at it if you end up here also!

On another note pedie packs are you going to South Africa for world cup? i am doing the ticket application during this sales phase. I am getting a few of the lower games but i am being optimistic and also applying for final tickets :xf:

Wahaha me and my uncle won my family's cornhole tournament last Labor Day. Made a cool $5. I am so ready to battle it out.
 
Casillas- I came over from cali too and had some of the same concerns as you do. For the most part Columbus has been a pleasant surprise. It's a very nice medium sized city with plenty of things to do but with the hectic nature of some larger downs. OSU provides lots of discounts/free tickets through the student union. Because we don't have too many distractions I would say our class is pretty tight.

We very rarely go to where the undergrads go; instead we head downtown to the Arena district or some bars west of campus. A lot of times we'll reserve the whole bar just for proffessional school kids or med school kids.

Like you said there isn't very much time to go out. We go out maybe once a week on average. Tests are usually on Fridays every 3-4 weeks so we usually build our social calendars around that.

Moreover...a lot of us are surviving on loans so we find that we just don't have the money to go out regularly. Instead we'll hang out at each others places and cook, play games etc. Personally I like the lifestyle. Having limited time and money makes you appreciate the simpler things in life.
