Hey guys! I'm new to this studentdoc.net thing. I have my interview on Monday and I was wondering if some of you could give me some pointers. Anyways i received two C's in organic and a B minus in physics 1. In my personal statement i mentioned i had issues with keeping on track with my premed reqs because i was tied up playing college ball. My premed advisor was telling me that there going to ask me about what happen when i go in for my interview. Do you guys think thats a valid excuse?

That depends on how long ago you got your grades. Are you still in school or did you graduate recently? If you're still in school, it may be problem but you basically need to address what study habits caused those two Cs and B- and how you've changed (or matured) since then. Be honest with them and explain that you had other commitments. If you played sports while in school, tell them that it was a real drag on your time and that your capable of doing better.

The other pointer that I would tell you not to panic or become befuddled. I remember when I interviewed, my interviewer asked a number of very complicated ethical questions. If you don't know the answers to them, just say "I don't know" - no one's going to hold it against you and they really appreciate an honest answer. Other than that, I would really advise you to prepare to answer several common ethical scenarios - those have a tendency to pop up again and again according to the Interview Feedback thread.

Casillas- I came over from cali too and had some of the same concerns as you do. For the most part Columbus has been a pleasant surprise. It's a very nice medium sized city with plenty of things to do but with the hectic nature of some larger downs. OSU provides lots of discounts/free tickets through the student union. Because we don't have too many distractions I would say our class is pretty tight.

We very rarely go to where the undergrads go; instead we head downtown to the Arena district or some bars west of campus. A lot of times we'll reserve the whole bar just for proffessional school kids or med school kids.

Like you said there isn't very much time to go out. We go out maybe once a week on average. Tests are usually on Fridays every 3-4 weeks so we usually build our social calendars around that.

Moreover...a lot of us are surviving on loans so we find that we just don't have the money to go out regularly. Instead we'll hang out at each others places and cook, play games etc. Personally I like the lifestyle. Having limited time and money makes you appreciate the simpler things in life.

Quick questions, lackli: the histology labs, are those all computer based or did you use microscopic slides? I remember Lorna or someone mentioning that we can buy new (discounted) laptops before the beginning of the year so that our computers would be compatible with all of their software. Did you bring your old computer to school or did you buy a new laptop through the school?

Thank you. I appreciate it. I'm actually a senior with a 3.44 gpa/33MCAT. I'll def start reading up more on medical ethic issues etc. I'll actually be a little drugged up for my interview because I'm currently on pain meds for a freshly torn acl (that should def make my interview very interesting). Anyways Ohio State's campus is amazing. I got a chance to check out the main campus out back in September when i had a game there.

OSU is not big on histology. I think they got rid of the histology labs back in the 90s. The bare minimum of histology we do get taught is mostly from powerpoint lectures and the test questions are practically the same pictures. That's fine by me because all those cells look pretty much the same 🙂.

We do have access to online digitized slides called "Webmic" and there is a exercise book you can buy that will take you through and teach you the various tissue types. However I don't know ANYONE who has actually used it beyond the mandatory first exercise.

The year before I came in was the last year you could buy laptops through the med school. I think they had too many problems with that program. You can still get a decent discount through OSU. T

I would invest in a decent computer...all of our learning resources are computer based and if you have a slow computer it makes you less efficient. We also take all our exams on our own laptops, so definitely need a reliable one. Mac vs. PC won't make a difference as both are supported well.

I contacted the office of admissions about it and they said that scholarships are awarded by the dean from December up until May. So it's definitely still possible to receive a scholarship offer.
 
How often do they get back to you before the 10 business day mark? I interviewed on 1/6, but the office was closed yesterday for MLK Day. Do you guys think I'll hear back today, or tomorrow?

imo, i think you should hear back today. it might even be up for you on your status page. mine changed on a that second tuesday.

I had a lot of football talk in my interview as well. I had gone to the Iowa State/Ohio State game 2 days before. Get me talking about football and it's hard to stop me. Maybe that's why I got deferred heh heh.

Speaking of the deferreds....has anyone been accepted/rejected or anything from the deferred status yet?

Been deferred since October 16th and I haven't heard anything yet. I'm still hopeful though!! :xf:

I think they deferred you because ohio state never played iowa state and they thought you were probably lying...haha just kidding 🙄.

Hey guys, I'm interviewing here on Monday the 25th. Anyone recommend a specific hotel? Maybe one with shuttle service to hospital and/or airport?

Wow, how embarassing. I put too many states in there. No, it was Iowa...the Hawkeyes...the yellow and black team.

University Plaza Hotel offers shuttle service to Campus. I couldn't determine if they offer hotel shuttle service or not.

The Blackwell (on campus) offers airport shuttle service at a cost of $10 one way, but is a bit on the pricey side.

Unless they've changed procedures, they used to reconsider deferred applications on a monthly basis. A few people will get in off of deferred status in this manner, but most of the deferred list action takes place after May 15th. In my class, a huge percentage of the matriculating class got in off the deferred list, but a couple of years ago there was virtually no movement on the deferred list. I think as OSU has climbed in the rankings, there have been fewer people giving up their acceptances and therefore fewer people getting in off the deferred list.

The Blackwell is a bit pricey, but it is an AMAZING place to stay--very nice staff, rooms, etc. I had dinner there too, and would highly recommend the goat cheese appetizer. It was a very relaxing place to spend the night before my interview.

Well, the reason that I actually stumbled upon it is because I was looking into OSU financial aid, and I guess they also definitely recommend that you apply for "University Scholarships" that are given out by the university as a whole. In order to do so, you must have an OSU login. There's a deadline for completion but I can't remember what it was off-hand...

As far as I know, that's the only real practical reason.

EDIT: just looked it up because I hate when people "can't remember" but don't take the 2 mins to look it up again...

"applications for university scholarships will be due the first week of March each academic year." So I guess it's pretty important to get your OSU Login info so that you can apply before then, e.g. cut down your personal statement, lol

Here comes the obvious question Bender: Where did you find the University Scholarship information? I thought we were automatically considered for these scholarships but you're saying we need to apply for them ourselves?

I'll let Bender post the link (because I can't find it), but University Scholarships are different than Med School scholarships. For med school scholarships, you fill out your FAFSA and then a brief informational form on Medstar and you are automatically considered for them. The university offers some scholarships (i.e. for minorities, "critical difference for women", professional students w/research experience, etc). In order to be considered for any of these, you have to fill out the university scholarship application.

The med school financial aid office is very good. Don't hesitate to contact them for questions about financial aid, applying for scholarships, etc.

I was accepted in October and sent in my money in late November. I still haven't heard anything about login information. How do I get my email account? I want to apply for these scholarships, but I think I need that first.

Still haven't heard back from 1/6 either, I guess tomorrow would be the 10th business day because of MLK day, so lets hope :xf:
 
I got a call from Dean Cappers around 5pm too. Very excited and hopefully there will be some good scholarship news in the future.

EDIT: Interview date was 1/6.

Interviewed on January 6th. Received a call from Dr. Capers today at around 4 pm EST. He has to be the best medical school dean there is. Really loved it here during the interview. Great facilities, very happy students, nicest support stuff I have ever met. so I think my choice just got harder. Congrats to all other accepted and Go Buckeyes!!

Does that come after FAFSA gets filled out? I haven't seen anything like that yet.
 
Hey Bender,

Do you know how long we have to wait after we're accepted before we can try setting up this account? I clicked the link and tried a few times with my info, but no go.
 
I'm sure the Med Fin Aid office will send you guys info on anything they need filled out for any additional scholarships. The use the information in that form to determine who are eligible for special med school scholarships that are based on criteria like being from a certain geographic area, or religion, etc. They usually determine those later than the scholarships they are offering now.

Honestly, I'm not sure. They have changed the website for applicants quite a bit from when I applied and what you see on your Medstar page is different than what I see on my Medstar page.

If you don't see a link, don't sweat it. Just do the FAFSA. Someone will send you an e-mail if/when the form is available to fill out. Heck, for all I know, they may use info from your AMCAS for new students rather than having you fill something else out.

Dunno. I just assumed wait a week and it should be uploaded. I don't think there's a hard line... just keep trying?
