Been praying for a while now, no nothing.

Anyone know an efficient way to get from Jefferson -> Penn State without a car, or Penn State -> Jefferson? (i.e. shuttle, public transportation...anything but a taxi please) Greyhound and Amtrak don't seem to be coming up with anything. Trying to schedule interviews...

(x-posted to Jefferson thread, sorry for spam)

Philly Amtrak doesn't go to Harrisburg Amtrak? You can taxi or shuttle from Harrisburg to Hershey.

Oh yeah! Well, did chocolate ever win one of these!?

So I got the snail mail letter today saying that they'll be reviewing my file further as the process goes on. Is this the kiss of death? Haha. It seems to me they're pretty much like "okay, we're going to send you this letter because we kind of like you, but we're going to wait and see if there is going to be someone we like better, and if not, you can have an interview."

This med school process is a lot like dating.

"I sort of like you... But we can't be exclusive yet. But if winter rolls around and you're still the best there is, then you can totally come over and we can get to know each other better"

that sounds so romantic! I hope they pick me to go steady.. haha

Hi guys,
I am just curious if anyone from UC Berkeley is applying to Penn State..... I graduated from cal in 2006 and while I was there, I took only one semester of inorganic chemistry (with lab), and one semester of biochemistry (lecture only). I thought this was the standard for premeds, but it sounds like PSU is not flexible with this requirement. AND they want all prerequisites completed by the end of 2009 (impossible for me at this point to find a school that offers this course now).
Anyone from Cal or anyone with a similar situation- what did you do?

I dont want to drop Penn State but if i'm going to get auto-rejected over this semester of chemistry then, well.... why waste my time and money, right?

Thanks!

wow finally marked complete (e-mail), submitted early august 🙄

As far as I know, one semester of inorganic with lab is not enough at any med school.

Hold. God dang it. I hate them.

Hey Elmo - I'm on "continue to review" here as well. Frustrating, I know. I'm sure you've got other schools you're excited about too, though. Chin up! You never know how it's going to turn out!

Yeah, I can't believe how slow they are. So frustrating. I submitted secondary on 7/28 and was complete on INCREDIBLE 9/11, and hold today.

Beyond ridiculous, what the hell do they do, watch their stupid football team while reviewing files?

If they do, then they just watched Favre run all over them in the last few seconds of Sundays game... *points at Steeler's fans and laughs*

That's about all I can do at this school since I'm probably never going to be complete. I wish they would just refund my money and toss my app.

Sorry to hear about the hold, Blue. Probably for the best anyway. You've got some other solid schools that will probably be accepting you soon anyway. 😉

Haha, yeah, don't worry, you will be complete... sometime next month.🙄

Did you mean Palmer?

Yeah, but then they'll just take my money and run. I really wish I had done more research into Penn State before I applied. I don't think they are as OOS friendly as people make them out to be. I would have rather applied my app dollars to Temple. As a private school I would have probably had better odds. Oh well, you know what they say about milk and spilling it and all...

On hold! 🙁

Grr, I wanted to go here too because I have a big interest in pediatrics. f*** my life

I went to UC Berkeley, but took an unconventional chemistry sequence.

1A-1B: GCHEM
3A-3B: OCHEM
MCB 102: BIOCHEM

Finally complete here- submitted early August but new MCATs didn't come in untiL Sept. 1. I'll be contacted by mail and/or phone? Weird updated status. What happened to e-mail.

i got a letter in the mail saying i've been put in the "continue to review" category

interview invite today.

"received" email on July 28th.

don't know when I was complete.

OOS.

congrats guys! Looks like they're pretty behind...so I should expect to hear in...3...months? lol

Good point... I don't know what I was thinking... Don't remember why I was thinking it was Pittsburgh and that still wasn't right... Oh well... at least Pittsburgh lost. I would probably get linched in the streets for saying that if I were there right now. ha ha

Umm...possibly because the Bengals beat the Steelers with a last second TD pass just like the vikes vs. the niners?

Not necessarily. I'm from Brown and the school only offers one inorganic chem, the next one is intense analytic chemistry and NOBODY takes it. Everyone from here applies with just that one semester and it hasn't been a problem with any med school. Just as long as its your undergrad institution's policy its fine.

allenthecowboy, thanks for your response. i did the same sequence except didn't take chem1B..... I wish someone in the advising office had suggested this? I could have figured this out on my own if I'd known to... but I wasn't sure I was pre-med at the time. Regardless, I felt Berkeley's advising was lacking, to say the least.

guess I can't apply to any schools that have this requirement and want it done by Dec 31, 20090 (so far only PSU). Wasn't there a discussion about this UC sequence stuff on another school's forum? I can't remember which school at this point, but I think you posted on it along with a bunch of other UC ppl...

Oh really? Thanks, I didn't know some schools only have one semester of a prereq subject.

oops, lemainar- just saw your post
Yeah, that's the thing. Many schools say something like "these are our requirements: blah blah blah....,But if you followed your institution's pre-med track, then that will suffice."
But I couldn't find this written anywhere on Penn State's website/instructions page. So I called the admissions office and the guy I spoke with said that even though I followed the standard pre-med track at Berkeley, I didnt meet their requirements and needed another semester of chem by the end of 2009. I rephrased the question just to confirm, then I asked if this was a problem for many Berkeley grads, and he said something ambiguous like "I dont know anything about any trends with specific schools"

....so I decided not to apply.

Am I looking at this all wrong/being too strict?

I dont want to drop PSU....

You lucked out. Gchem 2 sucked comparatively to 1. Actually, I thought it was the worst chemistry class of all 5 (Gchem I & II, Ochem I & II, and Biochem).

My school only has one Gchem lab, but it combines everything for Gchem I and II and is taken with Gchem II instead of I. I've talked to most of my schools and none of them have a problem with it, since it covers all of I and II. Maybe your class was the same way?

Is being 'continue to reviewed' more or less the same as a rejection? What's the chances of this turning around?

does anyone know if penn state med have extensive research opportunities for its medical students?

@smr12: Yes, there seems to be a ton of research opportunities at Penn State. Actually, they have a mandatory research project built into the curriculum, which is pretty cool.
