I sent it as text in the email too, but also attached a MS-word copy of the letter with the email.

Did you receive a response Feef? I attached my LOI as a PDF and I'm still waiting to hear back from Dr. Garcia. Maybe he doesn't have time to open PDFs from each applicant?

EDIT: We're now on page 25! And in response to mdeast, I'm undecided about my preference for BU over Dartmouth. I got into BU's MD/PhD program but I'm not sure if I want to do my PhD at BU. Whereas, I only got into Dartmouth's MD program. Right now it depends on financial aid because the MD/PhD program at Boston does not pay for living expenses during the MD years, so either way I'd be in debt.

I got an email response from Arturo, saying "you file has been updated", on the day after I sent it.

Congrats on the acceptances so far!

EDIT: I sent the email to Dr. Garcia, cc'd Arturo

I never got a response either. You can check your status at:

med.stanford.edu/aes and if you emailed arturo as well it should be added to your file...shows up on the front page. Garcia hasn't even finished sending out all the decisions (there are still people who interviewed this week) and I'm sure sorting out a ton of other things. I wouldn't expect the waitlist gets looked at for awhile.

Good luck all!

And Naijaba. I'd personally suggest BU, but you should totally make up your mind yourself. BU is definitely a better research institution than Dartmouth. My lab has collaborators there and I know a lot of Penn faculty where I work that actually think pretty highly of BU. I'm not sure about Dartmouth to be honest, but it'd be difficult for anyone to suggest you turn down free med school tuition + PhD year living expenses, even if you do you have to pay for MD year living expenses, if you're at all interested in a research career. Your debt at Dartmouth will be way, way worse and you won't have a MD/PhD. Getting a MD/PhD at any institution gives you a huge leg up in residency applications. I know of 2 TEMPLE MD/PhD students who are now at Mass General Internal Medicine. BU is certainly a better research institution than Temple, so I assume you'd have awesome options there as well.

Don't forget the value of a MD/PhD degree.

oh very cool i didnt realize aes would also track our updates.

btw - i know that stanford rejects post-interview, but haven't heard about that happening to anyone. does anyone have any idea what kind of rate we're looking at there?

Yeah. I just realized that last week.

I think it's relatively small, but at least significant. Maybe 15-20% of interviewees. I'd say another 25% are accepted outright...and the remainder ~60% are waitlisted. There are actually a couple of people on MDapplicants who attended interviews and were rejected this cycle. There also a fair amount of people who were accepted and seem to be possibly going elsewhere. One student got in this week, but it seems like all the accepted students are IS!!!

Where's the OOS love Stanford, eh? I'm the only person from my state on MDapps that got an interview at Stanford this season.

OOS love would be nice. I'm Canadian, so I guess I really need some Out-Of-Country love.

Pssh. 51st state, you're fine. You just can't get US gov't loans, that's all.

I met someone at UCSF from your state that had an interview at Stanford too 🙂 ... I think people w/ MDapps represent a really small percentage group (or maybe its just b/c I don't have one)

True, I was over-exaggerating a bit. MDapps can be helpful sometimes though, with some fun and imaginative counting and math. Of those with updated applications this cycle who got an interview at Stanford....

14 Waitlists, 8 acceptances, 5 rejections (all post-interview)...if we times that by say, 18....

252 waitlists, 144 acceptances, 90 rejections, 486 total. That's sounds about right to me. Kind of scary, but we have to assume not everyone remains interested in Stanford and some may just end up withdrawing their app. To get to the US News 172 acceptance number, 28 people come off the waitlist. This is all hypothetical math btw derived from a Friday afternoon I'd rather not be in lab. Does make you realize how tough it is to get in though.

nice - did you have to view the individual pages to look at that? i didn't see a way to screen based on post-interview status.

Screening.

mdeast <--- too much free time @ work.

There were 72 students there this weekend, with a good number set/almost set on going and another cohort weighing Stanford with UCSF/Harvard/other places.

Thanks for letting us know, Rajasthan. How was it?

I assume there a fair bunch of people already decided on attending who couldn't make it to admit weekend as well. So it looks like the class sounds pretty full this year. Oh well, not much we waitlisters can do anyway.

Oh man, that is really depressing.

Heh, yeah. I mean, there's obviously a reason why the admissions staff is pessimistic about waitlisters' chances, right?

Oh well, it is what it is. I'm sure if we look back at this thread a year or two from now, we'll laugh at our silliness

Solidarity guys. Solidarity. I can't imagine Stanford will get exactly 86 to enroll.

There's gotta be at least a few spots (especially after other waitlists move and the shuffle begins). Keepin' the hope :luck:

It will be funny and great if you both ended up at Stanford. I am sure that you too will become very good friends. I am also holding out for you guys. If you guys start a "Stanford accept me" campaign, count me in.

Dean Dean Garcia,

The following list of 1000 SDN members want you to accept us. Many have included relevant personal recommendations like "MDeast is the shiznit" or "I love Naijaba so much I want to carry his first child". Clearly this petition proves we'll be awesome Stanford students. Clearly, we post on SDN too much. But is that really a crime?

Dear Stanford,

Today, I woke up and went to Disneyland

Hehe. Have you sent more than one? I'm trying to avoid emailing Dean Garcia so he doesn't think I'm desperate or crazy...or slightly neurotic. It really is like dating. Don't want to come on too strong, but don't want to leave them thinking you aren't interested.

LOL....do you have that poster's phone #? 😉

Yeah, me too. That's the best plan I suppose. Short email to Garcia before May 15th, hopefully less formal than the last one I sent.

You guys are too chill! My application has 4 updates already lol:

1. New LOR from summer PI
2. Update on activities.
3. Update about application (my acceptances and waitlists).
4. My letter to Dean Garcia

I intend to send a letter to Stanford every 1-2 weeks until I get some closure.

haha nice you guys are crazy.

so have you other wlers been sending in financial aid stuff?

Mdeast: How do you even get any work done?
But you guys are crazy.

You'd be surprised. I'm actually on the verge on finishing up a first author paper here...assuming I can get the last piece of my story done before I leave :xf:. And...I do work 7 days a week, although only a few hours each day on weekends. Stem cell research can be very slow. So, I do have a lot of downtime while I wait. Plus, I'd rather be on SDN than tending to some horribly boring cloning projects I'm doing on the side.

Also, you'll find that when you're already accepted to medical school and working in a research position with complete autonomy over your daily schedule...that it's pretty easy to procrastinate online. I'm way better than a fellow medical school applicant/researcher I know. He comes into work and watches episodes of The Office most of the day..at least since getting in during the March rounds.

+1

haha, i downloaded the complete series of "pinky and the brain" a year or two ago. it's still such a legit show.

i'm downloading "samurai pizza cats" anyone watch that show growing up? I re-watched an episode and I realized that there were so many references that I did not get when I was little. Example: the two cats are arguing and one of them insults the other by calling him a "neo-fascist dictator" whoa there.

Suggestion: download old episodes of Rocko's Modern Life. In retrospect, I can't believe children watched that show (myself included). It's totally inappropriate.

oh yeah dude rockos modern life was awesome. that was the reason i wanted nickelodeon as a kid.

what about ren and stimpy?!

also - you guys sent your LOIs to [email protected] and your case handler, right?
yeah ren and stimpy was good too but rockos modern life was probably the big motivator. are you afraid of the dark was good too... i have no idea what i would think of these shows now though. i watched ninja turtles a few years back and realized how many bad puns they threw out there every episode.

yup, him and arturo ( I think he handles everyone ).

How about Captain Planet. talk about homoerotic, hippy cartoons.

haha definitely...HEART!

man, im watching gattaca right now..i forgot how great this movie is

R-E-C-Y-C-L-E Recycle!!!

heffer: Spring Cleaning! Spring Cleaning!

Oh man, forever burned into my memory.

God, ren and stimpy. Remember powdered toast man? Haha

gulp - just sent in my letter of intent.

in my own little imaginary world, im going to believe that most of those kids that are set on going to stanford will defer admission for one year and all the SDN waitlistees will be admitted.
