this whole writing an LOI thing is pretty easy. though, it sucks because its making me realize how much I absolutely love Stanford.

Yeah, I think that's a good thing though. Stanford's letter was definitely the easiest one I had to write...and it made realize how much I really did want to go there. I decided to withdraw though last week, as my SO just got a job on the east coast. West Coast dreams will have to wait 🙁

ah you sent one pre-decision? hhmmm...was it an intent letter?

Sorry to hear the news, oze and wolfiemd. 🙁

Like mdeast said ... welcome to the less-cool party.

Sorry about that. Join the party! But.... sorry that our party isn't as cool as the accepted kids party. 🙂

Hi! Don't feel that way. Stanford interviews highly accomplished individuals so I'm sure you are all rockstars. If you wanna come here, send a LOI and hope for the best. Good luck everyone! 🙂

Thanks, that is exactly what I'm doing. hopefully they grok me

What is grok?

Edit: I looked it up...I learn something new every day!

Me too. Interesting vocabulary.

Just out of curiousity...are most of you all in state or out of state?

I was looking at the US News stats. Stanford accepted 117 OOSers and 55 ISers last year. I just can't imagine Stanford has already let in over 100 OOS applicants already when their entire class size is only 86. It just seems too risky.

It's weird that there are so many Californians here too. When I interviewed I was the only OOS student my day (of the 5 or so who were there). I guess I interviewed on a Wednesday which might account for this. Does Stanford have any sort of preference for IS vs. OOS or is it equal?

No preference I believe. Good luck MDE!! :xf: for you.

Thanks I need it! Where are you ending up going RunningDiva? You got into BU last week, right?

I did! I need some fantastic aid to warrant going to BU over a UC. Still life in limbo until the silly financial aid crystal ball clarifies matters.

Stanford is ah-mazing (but u already knew that 😉). I would trade any acceptance (or multiples for that matter) for one here.

I was reading the posts by Doctor School and he seemed to imply that even Stanford prefers in-state applicants. He said:

Stanford certainly can admit very selectively. But by my last count 41% of their matriculants were CA residents. More telling is that 71% of USC matriculants are CA residents and 79% of UCSF matriculants are CA residents. Now the Stanford total could be because, let's face it, this state puts out seriously good applicants. But it has more to do with how their brand is defined and how their alumni historically have stayed nearby.

That last parts maybe implies that Stanford likes California applicants because they remain closely associated with the university (endowment, research connections, faculty positions, etc.).

True, very true. Although, I decided to look it up statistically (and calculate some things) and I was slightly surprised. I think Stanford does value a diverse class, and because medical students are more likely to enroll at local schools, OOS applicants who are offered interviews are actually at a higher chance of gaining accepted. I think this largely stems from the fact that they are more likely to enroll elsewhere because of geographical preferences.

IS: 2467 applied, 178 interviewed, 55 were accepted, 32 enrolled
7% interviewed, 31% interviewees accepted, 58% enroll
3/10 interviewees accepted

OOS: 4100 applied, 295 interviewed, 117 were accepted, 54 enrolled
7% interviewed, 40% interviewees accepted, 46% enroll
4/10 interviewees accepted

The fact that Stanford has only 86 students really restricts the number of each demographic that they can accept. Here's how I figure my chances are based upon the 2008 USNews data:

Starting with 86 spots:
~50% male ===> 43 spots

If you assume approximately the same number of female and male minority students:

~40% non-minority ====> 18 spots

If you further assume that males, females, and minority applicants are uniformly distributed geographically:

~40% in-state ====> 8 spots

That's a lot of "ifs" but the number of spots couldn't be more than 20 for white, male, California residents.

Wow, those statistics are horrifying. Although, I do remember being the only white male on my interview day. Actually, I was the only white person on my interview day, period. We had 3 East Asian, 1 South Asian, and 1 Caucasian (muah). 2 girls, 3 guys.

Let's hope they filter for male whiteness pre-interview : )

Yeah hopefully. Just told my boss I got waitlisted at Stanford (haven't talked to him about it), and he seemed pretty disappointed in me.

May 15th...5.5 weeks away. Gosh it seems so long. On another note, I do believe today is the last day of interviews at Stanford. Good luck to anyone there.

Plus it's my B-day! So I'm going to get trashed tonight So y'all should to🙂

He was disappointed, really? Most of the people that I talk to were stoked that I even got interviewed at HMS or SMS (text message haven?)...and many still think I may get into the latter. I had to burst their bubble : \

Yeah good luck to everyone at Stanford today.

And I have to work tomorrow...

well this thread took a depressing turn!

lol, sorry. I'm just trying real hard not to get my hopes up.

yeah yeah I get ya. Its hard not to with Stanford, especially when we're this close. Oh well, I'll be happy next year regardless.

Lo siento guys! I'm trying to remain optimistic, but as you all know...this process has been long and hard on all of us. I think last year this time I took the MCATs. So it's been a full 12 months of preparing.

yeah I was thinking about the length of this process the other day too. all I could say was "holy **** I'm happy I got in the first try".

Haha yeah. I also had my last interview at USC-Keck last month. And realized, from the time I submitted my primary, to the time I had my interview there...it took 9 months. It's just mind boggling to think about how long it takes.

My sis got into a T14 law school and applied in January. lol. It took 2 months.

No, don't do it!

I love my interview suit. It's a medium dark grey, dark pinstripe, form fitting Hugo Boss...super trendy. I bought it with practically all of my various college graduation money, considering I wouldn't have been able to afford it otherwise. I had a Penn student even stop me while walking to tell me how much he loved my suit and where to buy it.

I'm training for a marathon right now, and I'm slightly worried if I turn back into my super slim self again that it won't look as good on me.

I've been going off on bizarre tangents on SDN threads recently. But yes, I understand the sentiment.

yeah I can see you not wanting to burn a ~$1000 (?) suit. Mine? $180 from sierra trading post . Value of excising demons = priceless.

I think I only spent $400 with taxes on flights (and this includes 2 roundtrips to the West Coast...so I'm pretty proud of my internet bargain hunting 🙂 ) I'm also lucky enough to get $100/month from my employer for commuting expenses even though I walk to work...meaning I got to take my $1200 in saved money from last year and buy lots of acela passes for my NYC/Boston interviews. Stayed with friends at most places, so I ended up paying more for my suit that I did for all my traveling to 11 or so interviews.

Woot woot!

Now, let the b-day festivities begin! Thanks for the warm wishes. And enjoy your weekends everyone.

Oh hey, yeah I forgot to say Happy B-day to you! My suite? DKNY Macy's $250.

Tell us tomorrow how fun it goes tonight 😉

This is the advantage of living where majority of the schools are located. Too many transcontinental flights for my liking. Hit the checkbook hard.

W00T! Got into Dartmouth...but still waiting on Stanford haha!

CONGRATS!!! I have some friends that go there and I think they love it. Would you go there over BU?

Either way, acceptance news is always good news 🙂

For those of you who emailed Dr. Garcia your LOI's, did you attach it as a PDF, or just have the LOI as the text of the email. Kind of trivial, but just wondering.

PDF file. I sent him a real brief note in the email though to let him know what it was. CC to arturo as well so he can add it to your file.

Any accepted students who post on here headed to Stanford for admit weekend today or tomorrow? Tell us how it goes...slash whether or not it looked like the class was over-enrolled.

I sent it as a text in the email (which I always do). I find its easier for people to read it b/c the world is so BBerry dependent it just helps knowing its right there w/out another click. To each their own though!

I sent it as text in the email too, but also attached a MS-word copy of the letter with the email.
