has anyone turned in their financial aid award letter yet? i'm sort of confused b/c my financial aid offer seems to think that I'm an in-state resident and the total they're calculating for me is using in-state tuition.

therefore, it seems that i have to calculate for myself what amounts i should ask for.

i'm also a little confused why perkins loan suggested is $1800 when max is $8,000 and they say you should use up that loan first. sorry if these questions don't belong here I'm just hoping someone can chime in here.

Maybe they think you are in-state. You should call/email admissions (yes admissions and not the fin-aid office) and check.

Oh and if they think you are in-state, maybe you should just ride with it. You will save about 20K.

Here is what I asked them in an email: I recently received my financial aid letter, however it indicated that a decision on my residency status will be made by your office. When can I anticipate that that decision will be made?

any recent letters?? i was expecting something this week because of what i was told last week when i called the office.... i know its still thrusday but i'm basically stalking my mail loll

Interviewed 3/15... Alternate List with health forms via snail mail today.

Does anyone know what my chances are of getting accepted at SUNY: Downstate if my dad attended medical school here? 😀

Looks like all they are giving out now are alternate lists or rejections.. they should have at least notified the applicants when they gave out all their acceptances so that you knew you were interviewing for an alternate list position.

Actually, they've been interviewing for alternate spots since january (check earlier in the thread). I heartily agree though, I interviewed 2/16 and was placed on alternate.

Quick question for you guys... I just got my financial info from downstate, and I mistakenly put that I was living on campus on my fafsa. So the loan info they gave me is all out of wack with what I actually want. So I made corrections of my fafsa this weekend. Do u guys know what I should do next? Do they recalculate my loans and send me a new form later on? Or should I call them to discuss it?

It seems like they made their final acceptance decision in January b/c I interviewed 1/7 and got accepted 3 weeks later which was faster than I had expected. I must have been included in the last batch of decisions before they started putting everyone on the alternate list. GL to everyone waiting:luck:

rejected today after being placed on hold for spring consideration after my interview, so they've started to look at the hold list for all of you still waiting. good luck those of you still in the running!

:scared:. Was it by email?

That freaking sucks. 🙁

Now I'm expecting a rejection next week.

Jackson 1, when was your file placed on hold, so I have an idea when I should start worrying..

I don't remember if I put down on or off campus (my guess is off) on the fafsa. Do I need to contact them to re-do my loan package if I decide to live on campus and my fafsa says off? I think what they gave me should be enough for me to afford either option.

NicM88, what do you mean by out of whack. Shouldn't the housing allowance be comparable for either on or off-campus options. Also, do you know how much your rent will be already?

umm i interviewed end of january and i think i was put on hold late feb/early march

At this point I doubt when you were placed on hold has anything to do with the rejection. My guess is they're just going to start rejecting people at the bottom of the list and accepting people toward the top.

softmed, do u know if the list is ranked.. or people towards the bottom means interviewed late in the process?

No idea. I really doubt they're going to reject people based on when they interviewed though. That's extremely arbitrary. I think they probably review the applications and put them in some kind of order, even if it's not official.

i was put on hold at the same time as jackson1..🙁

Did you get rejected? If not, I think this is pretty good evidence they didn't just go by when you were put on hold. I was put on hold last year and they haven't rejected me yet :xf::xf::xf: But there's always checking the mail when I get back to my apartment I guess...

Anyone hear back from the housing office yet?

Also, I read something about a computer laptop requirement. Do you really need a laptop or is a desktop okay. Will I need to bring a laptop into some classes?

I haven't heard anything yet either..
They might get back to us after May 15th? or even later than that..
I'm visiting next Friday to shadow a student, and I'll ask the housing office about it while I'm at the campus.
It's not guaranteed that I'll get an answer so don't count on it too much..hehe

As for the laptop requirement...I have no clue.
Sorry.. :T ..

a friend of mine is at downstate now and i was talking to her after my interview and she said that everyone has a lap top because when you take exams you bring your computer to the corrals (the study cubes in the school building) and everyone takes the exams on their computers via the internet... thus i guess a lap top is key because you wouldnt be able to bring a desk top to the exams... if i were you i would check to make sure that this is 100% accurate before investing in a desk top

This is correct. All of the exams except anatomy practicals are now computerized and on laptops, so a desktop won't cut it. Histology is also done on laptops.

Sorry.. :T

You just might be following me!!!

I applied to the neural and behavioral sciences PhD program -- did anyone apply to that? or hear anything for that matter?

I called last week friday and I was currently the 8th candidate however there were only 4 spots, ahhh! I wonder what my chances of being accepted are...

You just might be following me!!!

I actually got an email from Bridget..
She said she's in group A, so I hope I can see you too.
Can't wait! I'm so excited 😀

Wouldn't using laptops make it really easy to cheat?

I suppose it's harder to look everything up than simply know it.

Nope I am not Bridget, although she's cool so you'll have a good time. See ya there!

The program knows if you minimize it and the instructors are always watching. Plus, its not worth the risk of expulsion.

NO I havent heard anything yet....goshhh so much waiting im hating this!

Finally picked a school and declined my Downstate acceptance. Brooklyn would have been nice though🙁. Good luck to everyone else (accepted back in Dec/Jan).

Just withdrew my acceptance. Good luck to all of you on the waitlist, I hope one of you gets my spot. 👍

Withdrew from my acceptance at Downstate. Good luck to those on the waitlist, hopefully one of you here will get my spot!

So shadowing seems to be picking up now since most of y'all are finishing up school. I hope you guys come and get a look at Downstate...I think you'll get a much better view of what being here is like. The tour on the interview trail is OK but I promise shadowing is much better.

Hope to see you guys this month! And remember...look for the backwards Sox cap! 😀

on the checklist for accepted applicants i see "CPR verification." Does anyone know if the training has to be done with a particular organization like the American Heart Association or can it be done with any like the Red Cross.

AHA BLS for healthcare providers only. I just finished mine today, its not as much time wasted as u would think.

Officially picked a school and withdrew my Downstate acceptance today! Hope it goes to one of you!

Just withdrew from Downstate, good luck whoever gets my spot off the waitlist! Hope the good karma comes back around.

Hear hear! just withdrew as well. hope one of you gets my spot and someone opens up a spot on the list im on!

Accepted Via phone call MD/PhD Friday at a time completely reasonable for the east coast, but totally unreasonable for the west coast. Lucky I start work at 5am out here!

Received my acceptance letter via FedEx today. I was originally on the waitlist.
Now I have the fortunate problem of choosing Downstate or Stony Brook. No financial aid award from either school yet.

If you don't mind sharing, can you please let us know when you interviewed/were put on the alternate list? Also, is ur current residence in NY? (it might affect how long it took you to get the letter) Are u IS?

i was just wondering if any of you other fellow wait listers have sent letters of interest/intent/update... i really want to send one because i would absolutely go here however it said in the email not to contact the school regarding admissions status or something like that... do you guys think this also means dont send us letters?
