So for those who didn't like this passage..... we should invite students from all over the country & not let them be aware of basic safety in Detroit? I think the school should be complimented for the guts to put this passage in the guide. Life before all else. Way to go WSU.

I am sure there are tons of schools in bad neighborhoods (& frankly they make the best schools, as they usually serve uninsured which adds to the patient list... thus benefiting med students) but nobody probably was so outright about student safety!

I hear BU is in a REALLY bad neighborhood . . . but do we hear anyone trash talking Boston? I found the Orientation Guide very helpful. Truth be told, bad stuff can happen ANYWHERE.

Wayne is still my first choice!

The orientation guide is put together by med students, the honor service organization actually (http://www.med.wayne.edu/aesculapians/index.asp), and is updated every year with contributions from many individuals. I keep it around still, it's a good reference.

Also, don't listen to the cynics. Detroit can be pretty awesome. It's way better than what I was expecting.

OK, so I got an interview invite yesterday for a 22 March interview. We were on the way out the door for a 3 week vacation to Japan, and I planned on reading the details on the way to the airport. About halfway there, I realized I had forgotten the letter! Can anyone tell me a) what is the time frame in which I must confirm the interview and b) do I need to confirm via e-mail or phone (contact info would be appreciated). Also, does anyone know if the class is filled yet? Thanks!

You can go down the list. Some of the top school are in rough areas. Chicago, Hopkins, Penn to name a few.

The Orientation Guide is incredibly thorough and very helpful. Covers more topics than I've seen any other school attempt. With that said, this passage is what freaked me out:

"If you find yourself lost, keep driving and get yourself back to a freeway or major road. Never pull over and sit on your cell phone trying to get directions on a random Detroit side street at night. If it comes down to it, at 2 am in Detroit when you are lost and there are no other cars around, you don't need to sit at red lights waiting for a green...."

wat makes this funny is that its 100% true

also, dont ride the people mover alone late at night

and that guide is hilarious by the way, and helpful 🙂

a&b) About 1 week before interview, you'll get an email, requesting confirmation that you will attend the interview via email. c)if people from deferred list are getting in.... class is not probably full.

The class is DEFINITELY not full: http://www.med.wayne.edu/admissions/applying/interview_process.asp

from that link: "There are seven rounds of offer, occurring monthly from October through April. The specific dates will be given when you arrive for your interview. On that day, applicants who have interviewed can call the office to find out their status. They will either be offered a place, placed on the alternate list, or no longer considered."

I really like Wayne's med school. But it costs soooo much!

well yes in a way because we dont qualify for financial aid

But even our Canadian private loans (i.e. LOC's) have much better interest rates than the American federal student loans. My friends are paying like 8-9% interest while we get prime (~2%). And their subsidized loans (stafford?) are financially equivalent to our OSAP loans. And if you are from another province (i.e. Alberta or BC) you can get even more subsidized government loans.

Compared to OOS Americans, Canadians get a better deal.

Seems like 3 to 4 months is the norm for late submission. Obviously if you just submitted a few days ago, it won't take them that long because they'll only be sending invites until sometime in March, so those ppl's turn around times will be much quicker. It looks like there's only one post-secondary rejection listed in the rejection thread for Wayne State, but there are undoubtedly many more.

Complete since 9/24 here and no notification of rejection/interview. Every time I call they still say no decision has been made..... which probably = reject.

So what exactly do you want to know? They're sending invitations out until sometime in March, relax a bit. There's still plenty of time to be invited for an interview. There have been post-secondary rejections. So if you've not been notified of one, then you're still in it. Are you IS/OOS?

they told me that same thing but gave me an interview a few weeks later. I know waiting is hard but you have no choice. You may be one of the people who gets the march/april interviews, or you may not be. Just try to relax.

So you're saying he may or may not get an interview? 😉

Can anyone shed light on financial aid at Wayne? Is it only need-based or are merit scholarships common?

I didn't want to know anything. My post was in response to the one above that said turn around time may be quick. I was just saying my turn around time has obviously not been quick, although I sumbitted earlier in the season.

And yes, I hope I'm one of the later interviews but only time will tell. I love the thought of my application sitting in a pile somewhere until they decide to make final decision.

If anyone has interviewed lately, could you give some feedback on the interview page please? Haven't had any new posts there since 2009.

Interview invite scheduled for April 7th
Complete 10.19
Canadian

Just received an interview invite this morning for April. I was complete 11/17.
Canadian.

This is a little OT, but is anyone else here a hockey fan? I have my interview scheduled for March 22nd and I couldn't help noticing that the Penguins will be in town on that day. I'll definitely be hitting up Joe Louis Arena after my interview.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know the specific dates of the remaining "rounds of offers"? I am curious where my interview falls in regards to it.

There are two more rounds of offer in the cycle. However, they'll still be offering those on the waitlist spots in the class as people withdraw over the course of the rest of the cycle. I believe the specific dates remaining are March 24 and April 21 or something like that. There may also be one coming up in a few days this month but that one obviously won't apply to anyone who hasn't already interviewed.

I agree that it's better that they are being honest with people. If an out of state applicant was victimized because they didn't understand the risks of wandering around downtown Detroit, it would leave people with a much worse impression of the city/WSU.
As a native of Detroit I definitely feel Wayne is a great school and Detroit is a great city with an incredible history...but let's not kid ourselves, it is also a truly dangerous place in some areas. People who don't know the area well need to be aware that they shouldn't let themselves look like an easy target.

Also, May 15th is a big day for the remaining waitlisters after the original decisions, as a lot of people are forced to give up multiple acceptances. But after that you can just hear at anytime when someone drops and your next on the list.

is it too late to expect an interview invite ?

i was complete in december
and no news

Well, they said they'd be sending invites until "sometime in March" the last time I called the office. So, no it's not too late.

Thank you for the info! Actually, the one in a few days might apply to me... because I have an interview tomorrow. :scared: I heard of people waiting weeks for a decision, but if mine is really close to a round of offer I might get an answer very soon after the interview. 😱

Oh, that is good to know! I'm sure the waiting list will move very quickly on that date.

Who's nervous about the Wednesday decision date?!?
😀😱😱

If you are interviewing today (Monday 2/22) then you won't make the W decision date because the committee meets every Monday. So you will probably be brought up to the ad com next Monday.

Good luck though!

i think so. i sent them an email with my masters grades and told them i was very interested in hearing back. that count?

Did they reply to your email at all? When did you send the email?

And good luck to all of those who are going to find out on Wednesday!!! 😀

You're right, admissions told me I will find out in March. Thanks! 🙂
