i remember last year ms. cotter said the committee met at the beginning of every month to do that.

I'm not saying you are lying, because I have never asked anyone about this, so I know no information regarding when they meet. but from this forum, it looks like most of the letters are mailed out/dated later in the month. It may be true that the committee meets early in the month, and then it takes about 2 or 3 weeks to prepare the paperwork to send out the invites. This process was probably a bit quicker at the beginning of the application, but in the those receiving interviews via snail mail in the past 1.5 months got their notifications towards the middle/end of the month, but there were a few who got email notifications earlier in the month.

soooo this post probably answers no questions WHATSOEVER, except I tell you what you already know... applying to med school is an arduous task which undoubtedly takes a few years off your life.

but just going off what others have received, i was complete on 10/6 and i'm guessing i'll HOPEFULLY have some good news in my hands just between nov 17th - thanksgiving.
 
Hi everyone. This is my first post ever. I was just accepted into Wayne State. I was wondering if anyone knows where people tend to live in their first year?

Downtown, Royal Oak, or one of the burbs. Depends what you're looking for.

Royal Oak is the social scene. Lots of med students live there, lots of restaurants and coffee shops.

Downtown is cool too, cept you have to worry about getting murdered. It's great for pre-postexam parties or going to Tigers games.

I rent a house in Grosse Pointe Park. It's pretty sweet here, but not much of a social scene. Private parks, beautiful houses, great for walking around outside and not feeling like you're gonna get mugged. Easy drive to school too, multiple routes if there's traffic.

Just live somewhere away from school. You'll spend enough time there as it is. (Unless you don't have a car then maybe consider something near scott hall.)

i called the office.
they said they sent out their interview invites for november and december last thursday
and that the next time the committee will meet wont be until december to determine who to interview for jan and feb. and it apparently doesn't matter when you're complete. all applications are seen and a decision is made - intw vs. under review

For those that got their interview invite by snail mail, was it a big brown envelope or .....?
 
Interview invite for mid December! I am OOS, not from anywhere close. How hard is to get in OOS?

its not exceptionally hard because the tuition is 59K+
and so there is a lot of movement through the waitlist
and a lot of OOS accepted post-interview overall

it helps if you have a gpa near 3.7 and an mcat of above 30

it doesn't actually matter when she was complete
because the committee places no bearing on that
just looks at all complete applications whenever they meet

That seems like an awful lot of applications to go through at each meeting. Do you think that they would have reached mine if I was complete in late Sept?

yea. they probably saw yours late Oct.
not to worry.
they'll see it again early Dec.

Mine was a big white envelope...I wasn't expecting an invite from Wayne, but when I saw it, I thought to myself, "Hmmm, too big for them to waste a rejection letter with".

For those who live in the area or have interviewed at Wayne:

1. What is a good, relatively cheap hotel to stay at?
2. What methods of transportation should I take to the school?

For those who haven't interviewed yet, I can't recommend The Inn on Ferry St. enough! I was there earlier this week and it seriously made my trip. It was one of the cheaper hotels in the area (with the WSU SOM discount) and it was sooo nice. I drove to Detroit, so I can't say much about their shuttle service, other than that they do have one. It will take you anywhere within a 5 mile radius. The SOM is within 5 miles, but I don't know about the airport. It's a series of converted mansions on Ferry St, and was a fun change from the usual hotel.

Second for Inn on Ferry St. 👍

It's near the school and they have a shuttle. Rooms are very nice. Good breakfast in the morning. And if you have time, it's near the Detroit Institute of Arts which is very much worth seeing.

Have any in-staters been rejected after they submitted their secondary but before getting invited to an interview? if so, how long after you were complete?
 
Received my big white envelope today! When I saw it I thought it was going to be a rejection letter since I hadn't received any interview invites by snail mail. Lol. Very excited! I was complete August 3rd and I'm OOS.
Anyone else going to be there December 18th?

Isn't the online rate ($99) cheaper than the quoted med school discount ($109)?

I interviewed on Sept 28th and was accepted on October 21st. I am in state. Thanks for the congrats it is quite the relief. I hope it happens to all of you very soon

wayne state is 61K+/yr for OOS for tuition + fees + mandatory health insurance?

If you are OOS you will pay OOS tuition all four years.

It is almost impossible to get instate status once you start school.

My interview was very relaxing. I lucked out and got a very nice doctor who took one look at my application and decided that I was a perfect candidate for WS. There were no stressful questions asked, it was a very conversation-like atmosphere. She allowed me time to tell her any details or anything outside of my application that the committee might be interested in hearing.
I have been on many interviews at this point and i do believe the medical school interview process is very flawed when it comes to the people they choose to interview candidates. I have been on a few interviews where my interviewer did not speak very good english, creating a huge language barrier. I have been on interviews where my interviewer was not an MD, she was a PhD and was angry that I was not giving MD/PhD programs a harder look (i have a lot of research experience). Your application can get you in the door but in the end there is a lot of luck involved in the process as well. If you get a good interviewer your chances of them going to bat for you at the admissions committee meeting are significantly greater than if you get a bad interviewer. I just happened to have a pretty good application AND get lucky.

I'm just going to take a guess that if you get a secondary, you probably have to write a really bad one to be rejected outright after submitting it. They probably review your application at every meeting if you've returned a secondary if it's acceptable and decide whether or not to interview you. I would imagine that the end of the cycle is when you would likely get a rejection post secondary at Wayne. But like I said, that's just speculation.

i emailed them about my status and they replied pretty quickly, you should go ahead and ask.

I have been calling them once a month. They are very friendly -- but pretty much the answer is -- your application is still under review & we'll let you know, if you are invited for interview.
 
how will you explain your mcat?

they'll ask you about the verbal, be prepared.

edit: well they wont necessarily ask you, but they might. its just that there are some people on the committee who are more mcat-centred, and to prepare for confronting them, interviewers might ask you about weaker points on your mcat. not to say that a 9 is a bad score, its not, its a nice round score. i guess i was just trying to prep you for the worst heh. came off a lil lopsided, sorry 🙁

yea.

i mean they generallly like to ask anything sub-10

and anything about the mcat that can help them in presenting your case to the committee.

If it's such a "red flag" to have a 9 in VR, why would they offer him an interview? I had a friend that had a 7 and wasn't asked a word about it.

I think medhearter is just trying to be helpful. I don't think there's much you can say if asked to explain a subscore on the MCAT other than to say that's the way it is, but you'd be surprised by what will be asked by some interviewers. After all, the interviewer might not have been the one who invited you to visit.

At a different school, I was asked to explain my verbal score (an 11, which was one point higher than each of my science subscores). You never know!

I didn't mean to come off as snappy, and I do agree that it depends on the interviewer you are assigned to. In fact, I had another friend who had an interviewer ask her why her hometown (not more than 3000 people in a rural area) was more than 95% white folks as if it were her fault that her parents chose to raise her in such an area and continued referring to her as "you people." I'm sure that was a bit out of line, but seriously what can you do about that?
 
to those who have been to the wayne interview: how many questions were asked / how long did the interview last?
