hey shawn_wac, hang in there buddy. I feel like im in the same boat with u though on my retake, i was able to improve my TS by a point, PAT by 2 points, but my AA stayed the same (reading comp went down 2). even with decent scores both times, i still havent heard a thing from the schools so we'll probably be applyin for the 3rd time together for the 2010 cycle. anyways, college football is in full swing so at least we have something to entertain us, er well, at least me 😛

I hate to be a Debbie-Downer on here, but I need to vent before I kill something or someone. I took the DAT today and BOMBED the piece of @#$& test! Ouch! So much for starting d-school next year... Even though I interviewed last year on my scores, I retook the DAT because I wasn’t accepted and was asked to improve my science scores. Guess what… THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN! I get to wait around another year, study more random stuff that I will probably never use once in d-school, and loose another $100k in salary. Yeah, ADA... you rock! Thanks for testing me on plant biology. I now see why studying plants and understanding every detail of photosynthesis makes perfect sense to me and everyone else in dentistry. WTF? Anyway, as I said, this was the second time I took the DAT and I swear the questions this time around were a million times harder than the last time I took it. I didn't even know you could present ochem in word problem format without showing a line drawing... amazing! My scores are so bad I can't even post them here because people will laugh at me. I did score a 21 on RC, but even that is less than my first test. Anyway, just wanted to get that off my chest. I hope everyone has a great semester… I am off to start studying ecology and plant anatomy… it appears there is a lot of that in the oral cavity that I was unaware of until this afternoon when I had 4-5 random question on it. I feel better now...

I know how you feel -- when I took my test 2 years ago, I had a good amount of plant biology and ecology -- maybe even 1/4 of the test. I remember taking practice tests and scoring 20+ on biology and come test day, I get a 17. It is so frustrating because it has absolutely nothing to do with dentistry. The test just throws random facts at you. I feel like to do well on those questions you really need to take a plant biology course -- obviously we covered it in our basic bio classes, but still. They should really test you on the physiology and biochem stuff -- would make more since to me.

Anyways -- keep your head up. You will get accepted to dental school if you want it bad enough, which I have no doubt you and everyone else on this board do. Good luck!!!

Count me in. Re-applicant, the only thing one trying to get a hold of me through e-mail is some prince from Africa with all my inheritance money.

Hang in there Shawn! I know someone that went to UNT with us and he got in with a lower DAT- after a lot of post-bacc work, which was impressive in itself (he waited quite a while - but it apparently impressed somebody)

Thanks everyone! Yeah, I still want to be a dentist even though I now hate the ADA.... and I know I will get in sooner than later. I was that close last year with my interview at SA.... that says something... BUT just kind of hard to stay focused when you meet some guy who is 28, who works for a company that sells plates and screws for facial reconstruction, he gets to go into surgery weekly to show the M.D's how to apply the products and makes $200K a year with just a Bachelor in Business and Minor in Biol. Here I am with a Bachelor and 90 extra hours of science courses, eating toast and cheese for breakfast beacause I am poor, and after possibly scoring the worst score I could have imagined on my retake DAT. haha! Makes you think about jumping ship!

Screw being a dentist, how do I sign up for that!?

I almost forgot to post this...

************** VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY ****************

This next weekend there is an amazing volunteer opportunity available for anyone who wants to get some experience. I have done a couple of these and they are an amazing experiences. You have the opportunity to observe 100’s of cases all in a couple of days! The last one I did I actually had the opportunity to assist chair side during several extractions and fillings. In addition, I helped chart 100’s of cases. I got the chance to work with a dentist and look at what people’s problems were. I learned a ton. I am not saying everyone will get that much exposure, but the opportunity to get some good volunteer time is there.

The events will be held September 26-27, 2008 in Leander, Texas, and will be held at two locations, the Rouse High School for patient registration and at the Leo Center for patient treatment. Here is the link to the TDA website to register: http://www.tda.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=36

If anyone in the DFW area would like to car pool with me down there email me. I am signed up for Saturday, all day…

I've got a question for you fellow TMDSAS'ers.. have any of you contacted schools that you have yet to hear from and asked about your status or potential for an interview? I'm wondering how schools feel about that, as I'm sure they're extremely busy.

basically, I've heard from Baylor but have yet to hear anything else from the other 2 (Houston may be delayed obviously). Just wondering if they are open to discussing your status over the phone/e-mail or if they prefer to be left alone.. thanks

leave it alone, most won't really give you an answer anyways.

I received my interview from UTSA today in the mail: 09/20/08. Interview scheduled 10/13/08. Hopefully I hear from the other schools soon... All stuff submitted like 2 weeks ago.

I don't mean to be picky, BUT -- the dental school in San Antonio is not UTSA. It is in no way affiliated with UTSA. UTSA is the undergrad campus about 15 minutes from the dental school. The dental school is part of the UTHSCSA -- The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The only thing that UTSA and UTHSCSA have in common is that they are both part of the University of Texas System -- but they are not like other schools where the professional school is affiliated with the same name of an undegrad school (i.e. Nova, Creighton, Case, USC, etc.) I just think it is important to know where you apply, where you interview, where you get accepted, and where you ultimately attend. Also, just giving a hypothetical scenario -- but at the UTHSCSA interview you have an essay to write at the end of the day. There are different questions every week -- some might repeat later in the interview cycle -- but my point is this... what if you have a question that says "Why do you want to come to San Antonio?" and the first thing you write is "I want to go to UTSA because..."

What up everyone, hopefully all of u r enjoyin this semester and r havin luck with this whole process.

I just got two interview invites in the mail today. One for Oct. 13th at UTHSCSA and the other for Oct. 3rd at Baylor. I was kind of excited, but I know i still have a long way to go to get in. I was wonderin if anyone could suggest a place to stay in Dallas? I'm plannin to stay at a buddy's house in SA, but I wanted to know if there was somewhere cheap anyone could recommend near Baylor?

Good Luck to everybody

Hello
i've heard there is a short writing thing at the end of the interview.

Baylor is just North of downtown Dallas, so really there are not that many "cheap" hotels anywhere near the school itself. I guess it depends on what your budget is really… Downtown there are some hotels in the $100 range I think... check online. Just FYI: I would avoid anything on Hwy 45 going South and Hwy 30 going East; most areas South and East of downtown tend to be the rough part of Dallas. I would stay close to Market Center off 35 West (most of these hotels will have market in their name) or on 75 going North.

If you are driving into town get here early enough to check out the location of the school after you get into the hotel. That way you can get an idea where you need to go, where you can park, and etc... Parking at Baylor sucks, so be sure to be prepared to pay for that if needed. Also, just know that traffic around downtown in the morning is ALWAYS a mess... so give yourself a lot of extra time to get there and find parking. If you get to Baylor too early then go walk around the d-school and Baylor hospital. Baylor is a little different than a lot of schools because you can walk around inside and check things out without anyone bothering you much. Most floors are open to the general public because they have the different clinics on each floor. If anything you can grab a drink in the courtyard and chill down there while you wait or you can go into the Hospital cafe and grab a coffee.

Let me know if you need any other info. I live about 10 min from the school and know Dallas very well.

Baylor gives you entry to the parking garage for the interview so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm staying at the Hilton Garden Inn for my interview there. It wasn't cheap but it was close and not horribly expensive.

What's a good place to stay in Houston near the school and what's the parking situation there?

hey guys, i just got my first interview invitation for this cycle (oct. 20th) at my number 1 choice school UTDB!!! I'll be praying for those of you (danny, shawn, mantraman...) who were sitting in the reapplicant/no interview boat with me the whole summer to receive happy news like i did.

DDSAg09: The only place to park in the medical center is in the TMC garages (#6 or #10, there are many others but these are closest to the dental school) and you'll need to plan to pony up $12 for the day (i don't remember if UTDB comps parking, last year I took the local bus there since I work in the medical center so I didn't pay attention to the parking situation). you should probably ask celeste rivera. otherwise, u can look up the TMC garage via google. as far as hotels, there's a relatively inexpensive Holiday Inn on Fannin/Holcombe that is walking distance to the school. The other hotels in the heart of TMC are pretty expensive. There are some Hampton Inns on Old Spanish Trail, but I'd suggest pricelining and planning to leave your hotel early to beat the med center traffic

Houston covered parking 2 years ago -- for my interview I stayed at the Residence Inn (I think it was $89) which I thought was a pretty good deal considering the medical center is pretty expensive, they had continental breakfast in the morning starting at 6:30 so it worked out nice, and plus there was a grocery store right next to the hotel, so I was able to grab something to eat for dinner the night before without having to drive anywhere -- I forget what road it is on, but it is about 10 minutes from the school. I believe the interview day started at 7:30 when I went, and I left the hotel at 6:45 and got to the school, parked and everything by 7 am... and that was on a day it was pouring.

Cool, I'll be joining you there on Oct. 20. I already booked a room at the Hampton but I will check out those hotels for a better deal hopefully. I guess I'll park in the garage across and down a little ways from the school. We parked there before for a tour but I wasn't sure if it was public pay by the day type parking.

congrat. buddy, good luck for your interview, you deserve that and thanks for your kind words! 👍

TMDSAS received my LORs on September 11, 2004..

Hopefully the schools will receive it soon!!

I called SA to reschedule my interview some time late August or early September, and they told me they would send me a letter in the mail with the new date.... It hasn't arrived yet.

I hate mail.

Hurricane Ike tore up my roof.

mine as well. hence the late post. no internet at home...only at work!

i stayed at the la quinta inn at the san antonio medical center (about 1 mile away from the dent school)...

http://www.lq.com/lq/properties/propertyProfile.do?ident=LQ6108&propId=6108

pros: i absolutely loved it!!! i felt like i was on a vacation... the lobby is beautiful (there are 2 computers and a printer if you need to print an airline boarding pass or anything!) and my favorite part was the exercise room!!!...i love running so the treadmills and elliptical were perfect... there's free wi fi available in rooms....i really enjoyed myself!!!! i basically had to keep reminding myself that i had better be more serious and anxious about my interview in the morning 😀

cons: there were only 2 restaurants within walking distance: mamacitas and benihana

all in all tho, it's about finding a hotel that works best for you... i wrote down my top 3 priorities (location, exercise room and free wifi) and that's how i picked my hotel...

good luck on the hotel hunt and interview!!!!!👍

I am about to submit my tmdsas, but I noticed that no where in the whole application did they ask me for my dat score, am I missing something or what? how will they find out your dat score if the tmdsas never asks for it?

You are supposed to submit your scores to TMDSAS -- then they forward them to the schools.

i'll be in san antonio on oct. 20th as well! 9:30 for u guys too?👍

i might be wrong but i sent the scores directly to the schools
i thought they are the one who puts the score on TMDSAS or something like that.
but maybe either way would work.

It was that way 2 years ago. It might have been the other way too -- I just know which I way I did it and it worked. Whatever way gets the the information to the schools so you can get interviews!

I sent mine to each school, but I think the scores are just sent via tmdsas. There was a rumor it could be sent to one school and TMDSAS would send it to all but I didn't risk it. I do know if you sent it to the schools your fine- TMDSAS will get it.

I was wonderin the same thing....I've been checking my email and mail box every day. I submitted my application a little more than a month ago and i already have interviews at the two other schools. I'm wonderin whats up with Houston. Anybody know????

I heard from Houston a week ago today. Still waiting on SA though.

as did ddsag, I heard from houston last week (9/24/08) about my interview invite. dont sweat Houston, cuz they take a bit longer to reply than SA and Baylor. My app was completed on and sent to the schools on 6/18/08 so it took 3 months for me to hear from them. most likely, you'll hear about a november interview.

Hey guys, I was a late applicant this year. What do you think my chances are? Here are my stats:

3.43GPA/3.02GPA(science)
DAT: 21/21/18

Thanks!

you are in good shape if you have lots of upper level courses.

I talked Dr. Berrong from UTHSCSA tonight. He said they are running a little bit behind. Might be a little consolation for those of us waiting to hear from them.

I took my DATs on September 14th and TMDSAS has yet to update my scores on my profile to send to the schools. I emailed TMDSAS, but they said that they are trying to get things in as fast as possible. When I took my DATs last year, they had my scores up within 10 days. Should I be worried?

Also, has anyone heard anything from Baylor lately?

give them at least two weeks with few days grace.

Wow. houston takes that long to get back to you....???? 😱
dang...i'm scared i might not get an interview before december...;;;;;

Yeeeeeeeah...I'm scared I might not get an interview period. 😱

Baylor interview in the morning. Chillin at the Holiday Inn n cant sleep. If anyone needs a place to stay I would suggest here. It was $60 with the Baylor discount, plus the chick at the front desk was hot n cool. I could see myself livin in Dallas. I'm just ready to meet everyone n see the school already. The driving and the waiting sucks.

Congratulations to those of you who have receieved an interview. Here goes again, and this year I have not even received a single interview. 3.3 GPA, 20 TS, and AA 19 (Second DAT) , I have done summer enrichment program and I have also done research + 1yr worked as a dental assistant. Personal statement and everything looks good, and I see a lot of people with my Stats receiving an interview. I'm losing hope, please give me some positive feedback.....Thanks

You're a Tx resident right? When did you take your DAT and submit ur app?

Keep in mind that Tx schools are lagging..from what I've seen and heard. Couple of my friends with awesome stats haven't heard from some of the Tx schools yet either
