Has anyone heard anything from Baylor or SA, yet?? i'm getting worried...🙁

Baylor was the first school I heard from... they extended an invite 3 days after i faxed over my DAT scores.

I heard from Houston and San Antonio around the same time, about 1.5 months later.

Hi All, I have an interview from San Antonio on Nov 10
unlike others who are excited, I am very very scared an nervous mainly because of my low GPA, 3.2 science and overall, I am still looking at the feedback section on sdn, but I really hope someone can help out with these questions about San Antonio, hopefully I can prepare myself better, btw, this is my first interview ever,:scared: :

1) For the faculty interview, how many people did you interview with, and who are they?

2) I know some schools make you do a group activity with the other applicants to evaluate your leadership and if you are a good team player, did you have any of these group activities in any of the texas schools?

3) how was the student interview like, is it more like you get to ask them questions or do they ask you more questions?

thanks a million
wish you all the best

Sweet I got an interview to SA on Nov 10 too. See you there.

hey guys! I'll be at san antonio too on Nov 10th

Sony102: Don't be nervous!!! SA interview isn't too bad...u get one faculty interviewer who you meet 1 on 1 for 30 minutes, they are matched with you based on common interests

you get one student interviewer 1 on 1 for 30 minutes and they will either just ask u a bunch of standard Qs or they will just chill with u and hang out, ask u get to know u type Qs

at the end of the interviews, there is one random essay Q where u have to write a one page response on some random topic, there is no time limit on this but obviously most students only take 20-30 minutes

this is my 2nd time to interview there, check out the interview feedback on SDN, the posts are pretty accurate to my estimation

My interviewers at San Antonio didn't know anything about my GPA or DAT scores. Just be yourself and be calm. They won't expect you to know the answer to everything, just show them you are mature and socially adept.

Has anyone heard of applicants that get pre-Dec interviews twice (with any of the three Texas schools) and still not get in? This is my second year interviewing at Baylor and I felt like it went fine, but that's what I thought last year too. Do you think they would interview someone two times with good interviews, having done everything they asked since last year, and still not grant an acceptance? December First can't come soon enough. I don't know how many hairs I will have left when this is all over....:scared:

1) Interview with 2 people: 30 min with Faculty and 30 min with Student, my faculty interviewer was an othodontics resident
2) No group activities at the Texas schools, just an essay at San Antonio at the end
3) It was cool. He asked me a few questions, I asked him a few questions. It was laid back.

thanks a bunch presjc2, TB123, klpennin

Hey All, I have a brief question

How do you find about recent issues/technological advances in dentistry in order to prepare for the interview, I searched some magazines online but they're too specific, you have to be a practicing dentist to understand that stuff, is there anything more moderate for people like us who just want an overview to pass the interview??? any suggestions, I would really appreciate.😳

1. You interview with one faculty member. It depends... some students interview with dentists, researchers, or professors from some of the classes.

2. You have an essay at the end of the day. Pretty simple. The questions change from week to week. Could be ethics related, biggest challenge, biggest success/failure, strength/weakness, etc.

3. Student interview is with a DS4. It goes both ways. They ask questions, you ask questions.

Good luck. You will do fine.

And on a side note, there is a guy in my class here who had a 3.2 at UT-Austin.

Has anyone here heard of applicants that get pre-Dec interviews twice (with any of the three Texas schools) and still not get in?

I was talking to Baylor b/c I was wait-listed last year & she mentioned that people have been wait-listed back to back(but they try not to do that)- talk about torture. She made it sound like things change from year to year.

What about people who interview with all three texas schools pre-dec and don't get in? Does that happen?

yes it does. =T

lol. to make myself feel better I looked on predents...its not too common. There was only one in the past 3 cycles that I found, but it looks like they never updated their profile 🙂

Oh, by the way, to those of you who have Houston interviews and are not from Houston. Leave early! At least 2 people walked in late at my interview session. There is a lot of traffic in Houston.

Sorry guys...I know you get this question over and over again but your opinions will probably allow me to sleep at night.

Q: what do you think my chances are for getting an interview for this years cycle?

stats:
Overall GPA- 3.0
Science GPA- 3.2

DAT:
PA-20
QR-14 ( I had tuna on my break & started to feel really sick, yes Im ******ed)
RC-19
BIO-21
GC-20
OC-21
TOTAL SCIENCE-21
AA-19

B.S. in Biochem, lots of reserach (actually doing research for one of the TX schools right now), good letters (as far as I know), lots of EC, and shadowing a dentist for a few year.

I just cant wait to get an interview(assuming I will 🙁). application was sent out on 9/23. any input would greatly help!🙂 (such as when you think I should expect an invite letter from each TX schools) b/c I cant sleep at night:scared:

-thank you

Not exactly stats that would make adcoms reach for a phone.

Dude, its only Nov. 2nd, there are spots that are open and some that will stay open, be patient. From what I understand schools are forgiving when it comes to the QR section so that probably isnt going to make or break your app, you have a very good TS score so that will look nice.

huntingpro, if ya want an honest opinion, i would say u need to raise your gpa (overall and science). your gpa is on the lower end of interviewed and accepted applicants and u would need a MUCH higher DAT to compensate (not to say your DAT is bad), i would say u need an AA of at least 21 to compensate for the low gpa. it didnt help that u sent in your app late, u would have benefited from applying earlier.

so, although u still have a chance (most pre-dec interview spots have gone out by now but u may get interviewed between dec and feb), if u DONT get interviewed, i would say take lots of upper division bio courses and get all As.

sorry for the grim news, but i've been through this process twice with better stats so i dont want u to get your hopes up, i just want to ground u to reality and hopefully motivate u to work harder like i have.

good luck, i know u can do it

I applied in mid-september and have yet to heard(tx resident). Here's my stats:

Overall:3.39
Science gpa:3.38
DAT: 19 AA 21RC 18QR 18BIO 20IC 16OC 18TS 17PAT

😱

drchode, i would recommend a re-take of the DAT for u b/c your gpa is average and your science DAT scores are average as well. while its not bad to have avg scores, u need higher numbers to set yourself apart from the rest of the pack. i would suggest re-taking with the goal of scoring 19+ on each of the science sections, your other scores are good so u would want to try not to go down in those sections

sucks to have to re-take, but i bit the bullet and did and was happy of my re-take even though i only went up slightly

u can search my numerous posts to see my old and new stats

good luck

I totally understand. presjc2 are you suggesting I get my masters? I have a B.S. in biochem

huntingpro, I have gotten two masters degrees: an MPH in Epi and an MA in Biochemistry, but I got these degrees before I got interested in dentistry so I didnt get these just to impress dental adcoms, i got these degrees b/c i was genuinely interested in research

heres my opinion, it is not necessary for u to get a masters to boost your dental app, u can equally impress dental adcoms by taking more classes and continuing to shadow or work as a dental assistant (taking more classes and getting As is mandatory IMO if u go this route)

however, doing a masters is a gamble and has both pros and cons

pros: a masters will show your academic maturity by showing that u can do graduate level work, u typically take several courses which can help boost your science and overall gpa, if ure lucky u can end up getting your name on publications, and u will gain lots of scientific knowledge as well as learn cool lab techniques, if u get a masters, u will have a fall-back career

cons: a masters will vary in terms of how long u have to devote to the program, some may take 2 years, some may take 3 years but it all depends on the school u go to, lab research is very tedious and hard and u often get discouraged by the number of times your experiments dont work and how often u have to repeat experiments, plus u will need to get used to working 7 days a week for minimal pay (stipend currently at 26,000/yr at most schools except public health schools), u may have a bad semester where u wont get the As u expected

hope this helps

I should have never posted this message. I couldn't sleep before but now I will probably have nightmares of sitting by the mail box until I rot to death. I appreciate everyones input but I am feeling way worst than I was before. but it is what it is. O well....

no chance for me yay!:scared:😡😕😱👎🙂smack::bang::annoyed::beat: man I wish there was more icons for my frustration aaaaaa

sorry guys

Don't worry hunter, most people here are overqualified, and overly pessimistic about us normal people's chances. Keep your hopes up!! :luck:

DrChode and Huntingpro, I would call the schools. They will give you their advice and you will feel better. At least you will be able to plan your next step. They are, after all, the ultimate judge of where you are at. There are too many other factors IMO. No body here could judge your whole app. If it was all based on grades, they would just take the highest 96 grades, why bother with interviews, right? Keep preparing for dental school and they'll notice. I was freaking out and talked to Baylor- I felt a lot better after-wards. Oh, and Baylor said they never suggest a masters, it doesn't make a diff. to them and who knows what you'll end up taking. I'm doing post-Bacc similar to D1 and D2 classes. You shouldn't feel bad, look at my stats. I have some old grades pulling down my GPA a little, but my DAT is legit. I do have a lot of upper-level sciences though. Hope that helps!

Old-school, when did you receive the mail from Baylor? =)

Thanks.

Hey everyone

I heard that San Antonio has a manual dexterity test on a typodont, on interview day. What do you exactly do with the typodont?? Is there any way one can prepare for it before the interview?? mine is on Nov 10th
Anyone Please help
thankx
best luck to ya'll

I've had several friends interview there and none of them or my advisor mentioned such an exercise on a typodont.

Yah, there is no test.

anyone get any interviews for december?

My original SA interview date was August 25.

I called to reschedule since it that date didn't work out.

FINALLY got a new interview invite letter this weekend for November 24.

It took them 2 and a half to send me a new letter. GEEEEEZ.

I kind of don't want to go.. I'm going to be up in SA the week before..

The wait was punishment. SA does not like to be snubbed, once interviews are given, even by superstars. It is one of few schools that do not appear to mind cutting their noses to spite their faces.
