Hey,

Which of the DO schools have the lower MCAT average scores for accepted classes? Because there is a website that lists all the schools but doesn't include the new ones and was not updated recently...

Of course, low MCAT score is usually made up by impressive overall application with solid GPA, letters, and experiences.

Thanks for your help.

Yah.. DO schools average is : 26.19. You're a solid SD beneath that average. You're going to get minimal love.

none. The lowest is usually pikeville, which is a 22-23, and thats is only because they have certain non academic criteria they highly stress. The other newer schools, RVU, DCOM, and WCU, are all above a 24.

As Serande already said, the average for all osteopathic medical schools is 26. This will continually become higher and more competitive over the years, and CCOM, PCOM, Western, etc are already reaching accepted means similar to "lower tier" MD schools (whatever "lower tier" means but people use it).

21-22 is incredibly low on the percentile scale for the MCAT and demonstrates severe deficiencies in the topics tested. You definitely need to retake.

I am retaking in August because I need the time to review content/practice like crazy.

However, I was told that DO schools emphasize many factors: experiences, clinical shadowing, GPA and look at the WHOLE picture of an applicant...

My cumulative GPA is ~3.65, and Science GPA is ~3.4 and I have 2 semesters of research experience, attended 1 conference, numerous leadership roles and shadowing/volunteering hours completed. Also, I have a summer internship done in neurology research. Everything is good except for one exam and I'm so frustrated because I studied a lot and I wasn't expecting a 30 the first time, but I got much lower than 26, which was my original goal. I just feel like one score is going to make or break my future and I wish I can improve it. :/

Like I mentioned above, there is a lovely 3 month study regiment which is effective in increasing scores to competitive levels ( 30+'s). It's in the Mcat sub-forum.

Seriously. I used the 3 month study regimen as a guide to making my own schedule that worked for me, and I improved eight points and into the mid 30s. It's doable. The schedule isn't the whole thing or the most important thing, it's a guide but it's all about personal motivation and doing that work. The schedule is a good starting point though to create goals for yourself and to stay organized and disciplined.

Did you take a class? I feel they really help and are definitely worth the money as a better score = better shot at scholarship and more control where you end up. I tested at a 21 in February on the diagnostic and ended up with a 30 in May. Some of the best $1500 I ever spent.

Studying by yourself is feasible but there is simply so much information so much strategy involved that I highly recommend a class.

Get used to it, and consider yourself lucky that this didn't happen while under a medical school's $40,000+ tuition.

And with that GPA/MCAT combination you should retake. If you can hit a 30, the application cycle will be much more gracious to you.

yeah unfortunately with that score I don't think you will be considered at any schools. Study hard and take lots of practice exams. I just took a lot of practice exams and studied the questions I got wrong and a lot of the questions on the actual exam were similar to questions on practice exams from years back. It's also good because it prepares you to be able to focus on test that's so long.

As far as your original question about low MCAT, I think the lowest is Pikeville, but their regional biased. LMU I think has a little lower as well as LECOM.

Also when you are studying make sure to study all areas because even if you get a high score you don't want an amazing biological score and a dismal verbal score.

I took Kaplan...their online resources are the only thing I liked...I am now using the Princeton Hyperlearning books and TPR science workshop along with Examkrackers....Kaplan's book aren't the best in my opinion...

Thanks for the study tips!

Wow love this thread! I am almost in the same exact situation! I hope I can study a lot and get a better mcat score. I already studied like crazy last summer and was very dissapointed with my score. I hope I can do better this time around. Is 3-4 weeks to restudy ample time?

Honestly If I make a 26 im happy.

Only if your practice tests show significant improvement, otherwise probably no.

If you need significant improvement then no 3-4 weeks is not ample study time, especially if you took it last summer because you probably forgot a lot of stuff.

If you're wanting to apply this cycle try taking it in August so you can have at least a couple months to prepare because it will look really bad if you end up getting a worse score than on your first time.

Well obviously, I plan on getting a higher score or taking a year off to do a Master's program but in the end...only God knows where I'll end up and my destiny is a big question mark as of now since I don't know if I should go to the Caribbean route, Master's route, take a year off and work???

My life is a big mess, but I have all summer to figure it out, hope for the best, try my best, and pray for a miracle...
