Hey everyone,

I'm new to the board, but I am definitely not new to this thread. I have followed this thread since November, but I never said anything. Let me start off by saying that when I visit threads for the other schools I interviewed at, they definitely do not have the same overwhelming support that I find in here. Everyone in those threads are worried about your GPA, or MCAT scores. But when I enter this thread, I feel welcomed because everyone is so genuine and wants all the applicants to succeed. Members even offered to send up prayers for applicants still waiting to hear from Howard. This is definitely the kind of environment I want to be in when I go to medical school. I interviewed at Howard not too long ago and I LOVED the school. I love everything it stands for and I love the legacy. I hope that I can join all of you this upcoming July for orientation.

I completely agree OneMike.. there are only a handful of schools that attracts a crowd like this... and those schools typically have the same/similar social mission as Howard..

We are all glad you decided to enter the Howard Thread, OneMike. I am not surprised that you loved the school and everything Howard represents. Best of luck while you wait to hear back from Howard. Definitely let us know when you find out. We all are rooting for you! 👍

Does that mean if you interview the 1st/2nd week of February (Feb 1-10th) you'll hear something back on the 15th as well? Or does that mean you have to wait until the 2nd week of March? 😕

it depends on when your file gets reviewed, so i'd bet on march but hope for feb.

welcome to the party, OneMike! when did you interview? i bet there are some others on here that interviewed with you.

Thank you Miss Dee Dee! I interviewed on Jan 19th. Do you know anyone who interviewed on that date?

Thanks whatupron! I'll definitely be back often to contribute support and encouragement for everyone!

Yep, they send out decisions on the 15th of every month. I'm glad you called and sorted stuff out, BlakeGriffinFan. Hang in there!

I also wanted to share an article with you guys that I found on the Washington Post. Here is the link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/14/AR2010061404192.html

If you want access to the full research article: http://www.annals.org/content/152/12/804.full.pdf+html

Hope the links work, but this is just why HU is so awesome... the social mission aspect of medical schools is rarely ranked and it's great to see this perspective from a research article.

High levels of research funding clearly indicate an
institutional commitment to research and probably indicate
missions that value technical medicine and specialization
rather than training in primary care and practice in
underserved areas.

I thought it would be something interesting to share! Enjoy!

Thanks for sharing Beeweew! I came across this a few months ago when I was doing research on Howard. That's why I feel like it is an honor to be invited for an interview 🙂

Welcome, OneMike! Glad to have you join!! Yes, this thread is soo amazing... I remember how supportive everyone was way before I had even been invited for an interview. There is such a cohesive support group here and I am honored to be part of it. Even though I come from a large family (I'm the youngest of 10), being a first generation college student, I found it hard to converse with people who are not familiar with the process of applying to med school and the emotional toll it takes on us. This group has really been there for me every step of the way and I am grateful for you all!!😍😍😍

What you're saying here is so so so true. Preparing and applying to medical school is such a demanding and exhausting process... unfortunately, I don't have many people around me that can relate. But when I come to threads like this one, I am reminded that I'm not the only one going through it.. We have to make sure that we constantly support eachother. When you cross that finish line, don't forget to look back so you can help pull someone forward...

I don't know about ya'll but this whole application season is surreal to me.. whenever I sit back to reflect, I'm always like "dang, I can't believe I'm at this stage of the process right now.." Feet don't fail me now..

I absolutely agree! It's not just about us but also others to follow... this cycle has been grueling... I really hope I get into my #1, HU! I have mad love for this school! Voyager1, stay strong! It's almost over and hopefully we will all matriculate together!:xf:

Thanks for the welcome Beeweew! and Voyager1, you took the words right out of my mouth. This process has taken me up and down. I've probably grown a few gray hairs from all of the stress its caused me. From taking the MCAT, to revising my personal statement over 50 times (this is not an exaggeration). Then there was a period when I did not hear from schools for a long time. Add that to personal issues in the home, and that's enough to make any aspiring doc go crazy. But I thank God that he as brought me and you all this far, and I pray that he will make us successful students at Howard.

so true Voyager! this process is very stressful. At times ive felt very neurotic.😱 I am also the first in my family to go through the professional school application process so I use this thread as a source of encouragement and resource to answer some of my questions. Stay strong everyone! When you all make (as I am sure you will) remember where you started.👍

My heart skips a beat and my stomach does a somersault everytime I think about hearing back... eek!!! Not good for my health but hoping for good news at the end! 😛

13~~~ more days 😀

Goood Morning from California! 🙂

Goood Morning from California! 🙂

x2 !

Hello to everyone from California! The big day is almost here. I am really excited for all of you. Let's go Howard!!! Show everyone on this thread some love and really big envelopes in our mailboxes 😀

Feeling the love from Cali!! Here in DC, the weather has picked up a bit: I felt the sun on my face today... It's been ages and I was so excited! Those who interviewed today are lucky!!

DEF AGREE!! I got a little issue I hope you guys can give some advice. I have been accepted to St. Georges University and the deposit is due the 15th!! The same day I am supposed to hear back from Howard! It's a $1000 deposit and I DEF WANT TO GO TO HOWARD!

Even though SGU promises a good education and after two years you end up in my hometown NY (where my fiance is) and have produced many successful MD's I love Howard's mission of serving under-served areas and loved the faculty and over all atmosphere. I also have friends and family who attend here and live around the area. What should I do just pay the $1000 just in case to SGU? Ask Ms. Walk for advice? CONFUSED

first of all: whaaaat? $1000?😱 when did you interview? maybe if it's been a while, your file will have been reviewed by next week and you can contact Howard and find out the decision, explaining the situation and that you would really rather go to Howard. St George's wants your money so I bet if you called and said you needed a day or two more, they might bend a little. anyone else have ideas?

If it is any consolation, Howard has historically accepted about 80% of it's interviewees. So your chances at HU are pretty good 🙂. However, i understand that nothing is definite and anything less than 100% won't do. But considering that Howard accepts so many of those it interviews that means if you are blessed with an interview they REALLY like you and maybe would be inclined to give your decision a day or so early. Its worth giving Ms. Walk a call. Worst case she says "no" and you have wait but your phone call communicates interest in Howard and therefore is beneficial either way!

Ms Dee Dee's suggestion would also be the best option and calling Howard would be best if SGU does not grant you an extension.

I hope this all works out for you QueensFINEST!

Whoooah! $1000 is a lot, especially if it's not refundable! But I def say talk to Ms. Walk. And having met you, I have faith that you will hear good news but nothing is guaranteed until you hear back from HU and I can see why you would want to secure something for a back up plan. Talk to Ms. Walk and also see if you can get an extension with SGU. Good luck, bro! I'll be praying for you!

I know someone who had to put down a 2000 dollar deposit for UNLV!!
However, the school he really wanted to go was OHSU. He made the deposit anyway (just in case!). In the end, OHSU accepted him and he lost his 2000! He was not happy, but then again nothing is 100% guarantee, so that was his back up plan. I agree with everyone, QueensFinest you should give Ms. Walk a call! Ms. Walk is really easy to talk to and is very nice. I wish you the best in everything! I hope we all can be classmates! 😀

Thanks everyone for such detailed and caring posts! This is exactly why I would pick Howard University--it is the family like atmosphere hosted by real and helpful people. I interviewed the 26th of Jan. I will def give Ms. Walk a call first then ask SGU for a couple of more days. Other schools just seem to want your money--Howard is the only school I know of that is willing to even give you 15 more days after your first 30 to make a decision.

I hope I am in that 80%!!

Is that 80% rate intial acceptance or eventual acceptance?
:slap:...reminds me of Rick James and Charlie Murphy (sorry)

Happy Chinese's New Year everyone!!
May you have a prosperous and happy new year 🙂

This year I don't want any red envelopes, I just want a big envelope from Howard 😀!

Can anyone comment on the technology at Howard...in conjunction with the lectures and curriculum?
Meaning are lectures podcasted where students are able to see them again (after the first inital lecture).....etc?

Not sure about podcasts but the lectures are synced with your laptop (that you have to get as a freshman) and you can basically take notes on it as the lecture is going on. Also, the students who gave us the tours during interview day told us that at the beginning of the block or year you receive a CD with all the info you need from the class before you (guys, correct me if I'm wrong). So you pretty much have ample resources, digital or otherwise.

I found websites that were made by previous classes that have videos of all of the lectures that you can download.

Appreciate the link! They actually had yesterday's lecture postered and........(I watched it lol 😕)

It seems like the professor(s) are really cool and the class is happy! For the lecture I saw, the professor basically said......
"don't take notes, just listen and enjoy the lecture...everything you need to know has already been organized for you on your notes"....that is awesome 🙂

Goodluck to those in waiting and those interviewing next week.

Oh yea, anyone interviewing next week?
