2010-2011 Internship Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hi all,
just joined this thread, glad to have folks to commiserate (and hopefully celebrate) with. as of today I have 7 rejections and no interviews. sites I've heard from:
Pennsylvania Hospital
American U CC
UVA CC
Stony Brook CC
Institute of Living
King's County Hospital
Pace CC

Sites I'm waiting to hear from (and feeling increasingly pessimistic about my odds):
RAMS SF
U of Ill. Chicago CC
Howard U. CC
Pacific Islands VA
Karen Horney Clinic
Bronx Psychiatric Center

Any updates from sites that have heard from any of my latter ones would be greatly appreciated. this is my first year in the match system...trying to get my head around the idea I might not even get to interview this year. ouch.
hang in there everyone.

I have not heard from RAMS in SF either. The deadline was one of my earliest too.

Has anyone heard from Montefiore, Beth Israel, Karen Horney, Lenox hill, Bellevue, St. Luke's, King's County, Woodhull, or UT Austin? I am getting very panicky!

I am also waiting on Bellevue and St. Lukes. It seems the NYC sites in general are behind in their notifications (I don't know of anyone who's heard from them, though I want to say a while back someone on here got a rejection from either one of those or Hudson River).

Hopefully we will hear news on Monday. Good luck!!

I have never in my life wanted a weekend to go by so fast...

So i just need to vent this out... I have 2 interviews, 11 rejections, and am waiting on 3 more.

But my frustration is that my interviews are only at sites i have worked at in the past.

I was REALLY hoping to move away for internship...and i am starting to get really down on myself and thinking that there has to be something about my paper apps (dont know what) that is not appealing to people who dont know me...i wish we could hear a little more about why we didnt get interviews...

I am waiting for VA america lake, MEDVA, and UNC

I don't know if its fair to say that there's something wrong with your application. One of my interview letters said they were forced to basically "split hairs among a group of very fine applicants". It's hard to accept, but that seems to be what they've had to do.

I'm new to this thread and am applying to many NYC sites as are many of my friends. In response to Bellevue questions, they gave out several interview offers before Thanksgiving and held at least some interview days in the two weeks following Thanksgiving (adult and child tracks). Though I don't know anybody who got a rejection from there yet so they could still be giving offers. Also know nothing about forensic track.

This may help some

waiting on:

I got an email (rejection) from Rush on Friday.

Hey everyone. Figured I'd add my two cents. Reading all these posts is a sobering experience, but it's nice to see that we can be comforting to each other during this time. Anyway....

Rejections:
Federal Medical Center, Rochester
Central Regional Hospital
University at Puget Sound
Mississippi State Hospital
Northeast Florida Hospital
Federal Correctional Complex, Butner
Hamm Clinic

Acceptances:
Psychological Service Center
Western State Hospital
Institute for Forensic Psychiatry
Liberty Healthcare
Arizona State Hospital
Wisconsin Department of Corrections

I'm still waiting to hear back from 13 more sites, but I'm feeling really confident about the process thus far.

I hope everyone gets good news on Monday and Tuesday. I know some of you sounded like you were ready to give up but it's not over yet. Some of you got rejected from the same or similar sites as me, so it made me stop personalizing the experience and realize that there are many qualified applicants getting rejected. So, please don't beat yourselves up!

As a faculty, we didn't finish our review for interview invites until after the end of the business day on Thursday. Keep in mind that even after the initial in depth review, we still met for almost 4 hours to decide on the final "yes/no" list for invites. Friday, the administrative staff responsible for actually sending out the email and snail mail (we do both) notifications was committed to other duties in the agency and could not get to them until Monday. Hence, notifications are not going to be sent until then. It truly is no more complicated than that. We are aware that applicants are eagerly awaiting news, but Monday was the best we could do at our program.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question! I knew there had to be a reason you waited and I was just genuinely curious about how the notification process worked at your site. It's always interesting to hear about how things work from the other side of the table.

I'm still waiting to hear from:
duPont
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Has anyone heard from these?

I believe that someone earlier on on the board said that they had received an interview at duPont. I've heard through the grapevine that CHOP has not sent out any news either way yet...good luck!

to be honest i don't remember - she started listing a few dates and only one worked with my schedule (1/20) so that was all i wrote down. sorry i can't be more help!

no worries! congrats again!

I got an email (rejection) from Rush on Friday.

sorry to hear that!! but thanks for the response!

as a side note, one site had to call (to reject me) because my email was bouncing their letter back. just as a heads up for folks.

I have been told by Houston VA practicum students that the VA won't be sending anything out until the 15th.

I heard from Baylor a while back--ten days or so. They're offering a lot of dates for interviews (the email almost any Monday, Wed, or Friday in December in January) so maybe they are still sending invites?

I also heard from Geisinger before Thanksgiving.

Hope that helps.

Hey - i heard from duPont right before thanksgiving. Nothing from CHOP...

guess that means I didn't get an interview at duPont. Wonder when they're going to get around to sending the rejection notices. It's been three weeks since thanksgiving!

I'll try to remain positive but i'll assume its going to be a no from Baylor if they've sent invites out already.

Thanks!!

I have never in my life wanted a weekend to go by so fast...

I heard from St. Lukes Friday night. It was an e-mail to set up an interview. In NYC i have also heard from Pace and Columbia (Interviews) and Kings County, Manhattan VA, Cornell, Jacobi (Rejections)

I know it's frustrating because you want to move, but I think the fact that you got interviews at two sites where you worked is a good sign. They must have been pleased with your work if they'd like for you to interview.

I know exactly what you mean. I really had my heart set on two prisons on the East Cast and got rejected from both last week. I really feel I would have been a great fit for both places (and my peers agree), so I keep thinking there must have been something additional or different I could have said in my cover letter. Whether or not a change would have made a difference, or whether I was dropped because they were "splitting hairs" doesn't matter at this point. It just sucks to know I would have likely done great there, but the one opportunity I had to convince them of that wasn't good enough 🙁

Good luck with the one's you have left.

P.S.
Has anyone else noticed that it seems the people who have gotten around 5 interviews have also applied to over 20 sites? I almost feel like a chump for believing in the "15 is optimum" that APPIC told us. Not that regrets help anything, just an observation.

Officially having my own pity party.+pity+

I'm waiting to hear from:
Southern Lousiana Internship Consortium
FCI Ft. Worth
FMC Carswell
Harris County Juvenile Probation Dept.
Childrens Assessment Center (Houston)

Any word from any of these sites?

This week I and my colleagues have heard from Brown, Community Healthlink (in MA), Utah Neuropsych., Jackson Miss. Medical Center, & St. John's Child & Family Development Center (in Santa Monica).

Just wondered if you heard good news from Community Healthlink....I'm still waiting to hear from them.

so far i have heard from the child tracks at Dartmouth and MGH. I have received rejection emails for Brown and Boston Consortium and anticipating rejections (only based on previous posts) from McLean, BUMC-Multicultural Center, and UNC...though I am still holding out hope until I receive an official rejection.

Has anyone heard from the child tracks at Boston Children's, May Institute, South Shore, Cambridge Health Alliance, Franciscan Hospital, Institute of Living, Univ of Mass-Worcester, or UCSD?

I got a rejection from South Shore on Friday

I just want to remind everyone that # of interviews is not that important when you consider that matching is not guaranteed even if you have several interviews. Also, some people may have recieved 8-9 interviews but these interviews may not be highly competitive sites, whereas individuals with 2-3 interviews may have applied to several highly competitive sites. In sum, I am just saying comparing your # of interviews with your peer's # of interviews really doesn't do much good (besides cause self-loathing and anxiety) because more than likely you applied to different types of sites (For example: Medical versus School Districts; APA versus APPIC only; Yale or Harvard versus a private therapeutic day school in Idaho; etc.)

Stay positive and focus on your strengths and your accomplishments. Lets use this site to encourage each other and keep each other informed on the sites from which we have heard.

I, too, can't wait for Monday and Tuesday. Good luck and keep you heads up. We will get adequate interviews and Match! :luck:

I TOTALLY agree with you. I cut down my list from about 21 to 15 because of the payment difference and because of those past stats saying that you were no more likely to match if you applied to more than 15 sites. I knew that things were getting more competitive but I feel like I didn't get the memo that it was going to be THIS crazy and thus could have benefitted from applying to more. Not that anyone really knew it would be like this... just ready to join you in that pity party. +pity+

But then again there are 2 more days for possible good news, right?? 😎

Update for anyone applying to these sites

Interviews: UAB, Casa Pacifica, IU School of Medicine, Children's Hospital of Michigan, and Youth Opportunity Center

Rejections: Childrens Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, Children's Mercy, and University of Illinois at Chicago

Hopefully we'll here more tomorrow!

When did you hear from Youth Opportunity Center?

Has anyone gotten interviews/rejections from

Durham VA
Salisbury VA
Salem VA
Richmond VA (McGuire)
Cherokee Health Systems
Gulf Coast VA (Biloxi)
Illiana VA

Still waiting and wondering if I'm still be considered.

I was called for an interview at the Salem VA before Thanksgiving. They are doing interviews this week (Monday and Friday) and also have dates in January.

Wow that is a lot of sites to apply to, that must have cost a pretty penny!

But then again there are 2 more days for possible good news, right?? 😎

Haha TOTALLY! I am trying desperately to stay positive - hold on to some of that hope for me! 🙂

I was also invited by YOC on Dec 4th.

Hey YOC interviewees, I'm going through the same internship application process too! I didn't apply to the YOC for internship, but I did my practicum there last year. Dr. Lotter (one of the directors) was one of my supervisors, and I know Dr. Kohli since we worked together on a couple testing cases. If you have any questions about the site just shoot me an email ([email protected]).

I had a great experience working there! It's a great site- some of the people in my program in Indy call it the "diamond in the rough" since it's such a great site that so few people know about.

Wow that is a lot of sites to apply to, that must have cost a pretty penny!

It did. It seems like most people on here did about 18-20, so I only did about 5 more than them. The more I have to rank the more comfortable I feel!

So it seems that some internship sites don't get to take the weekend off. I got an email rejection yesterday afternoon and an email invite about an hour ago. I feel kinda bad that someone was working so late on a Sunday night to get this done.

Here's hoping we all get good news in the next two days!!

Sorry about the first, and congrats on the latter! Mind if I ask where you heard from?

I *think* so...the guy on the phone was a little unclear, but sounded like he said that I got an interview for the track(s) I applied for....

This post refers to UCSD/VA, correct? I also got an interview, and I agree that the man on the phone was very unclear about the specifics. He said he'd send an email confirmation later that day. After a week had gone by, I called and left a message, and I later received an email that just said "Interview is confirmed!" plus the date (that was the subject of the email, there was no body). I was really hoping for directions, hotel info, etc. Anyone else having this experience?

Like several others, this is my second time around in the internship process. This is an excerpt of an email from the authors of a study I participated in last year.

"We thought you might appreciate learning that the Journal of Clinical
Psychology will be electronically publishing the resultant manuscript later
this month on their website. In addition, the manuscript will appear in
print as the lead article of the January 2010 issue. The manuscript is
entitled, "An Examination of Applicant Characteristics of Successfully
Matched Interns: Is the Glass Half Full or Half Empty and Leaking
Miserably?" "

It is a decent study with a lot of information about what predicts match rates. I tend to believe this more than the numbers APPIC releases every year following the Match. If you don't have time/access to read the article, the highlight is that the number of interviews positively predicts a positive Match. Of course, I have a supervisor who received one interview and matched, and I had seven last year and didn't match. So, while it is a numbers game, there is of course variability too.

And after reading the article, I'm quite happy that I applied to 25 programs instead of the recommended 15. And for those of you worried about the Match and Clearinghouse: Be prepared mentally and emotionally for the Clearinghouse as best you can. It was a terrible and grueling process last year, and it left me emotionally drained for several weeks while I continued to submit application without having much luck. Having a backup plan is a really good idea! I think we teach our clients that as well?

Anyways, good luck all! I hope that none of us have to go through this again next year. I know I will not regardless. No more funding means I can't even stay in the country because of my status as a non-citizen and international student. And no internship means no degree..... Which means 6 years of grad school with just a MA to show. I liked the comment of getting pregnant as a backup plan... Time to move on with life. 🙂

I know what you mean, I only applied to 14 then got two quick rejections and then one site lost their funding. I then got paranoid and quickly applied to 4 more. You got to love anxiety. Hope everything works out for you.

I've had kind of a strange experience applying to Forensic sites. I come from a program with a very strong forensic focus, but we are in the process of accreditation. So, I'm not really sure what to make of certain rejections (e.g., was it purely based on lack of accreditation).

Interviews:
FMC Rochester
FCC Butner
Bellevue Forensic Track
Harvard Medical School, Mass General
Harvard Medical School, Mass Mental Health
South Shore Mental Health, Quincy MA

Rejections:
FMC Fort Devens
MDC Los Angeles
University of Massachusetts, Worcester
McLean Hospital, Belmont MA
Boston Consortium in Clinical Psychology

Waiting:
FCI Fort Worth
MDC Springfield, MO
FMC Lexington
Connecticut Valley
Yale University School of Medicine

It really has been an odd mixture of acceptances and rejections.

I got a rejection from UIC CC last week so maybe that is a good sign for you!

I have some personal experience with the Salisbury VA and if you are sincerely interested in this site then I would make the trip. They've had phenomenal interns in the past and while I don't know whether they have frequently taken people who have chosen phone interviews over actually going there they are a warm and wonderful bunch of folks and worth talking to in person! Hope that helps!

Best of luck.

So, I just got an email rejection from Franciscan Hospital. What's really weird is that they called me on Friday. I wasn't able to take the call, but called back and left a message. Could it be that my interview spot was given to someone else because I wasn't able to answer their call? I'm tempted to email them for clarification. It seems odd that they would call, then send a rejection. What do you guys think?

To add to the list of rejections (total 7), I just heard one from SUNY Upstate Medical. 🙁

Still need to hear from 6 more and have 3 interviews.

I just got an interview at the Salisbury VA. They have the option for a phone interview and I really want to do that as much as possible. (I applied to 20 sites and only 3 even have that option.) But a part of me is afraid that it will be a waste of an interview...

Does anyone have any thoughts/experience with phone interviews as compared to in person interviews?

Rejections from Wichita Collaborative Psychology Internship Program and Community Reach Center. Plus, Eastern Virginia Medical School lost funding for its rotation at Eastern State Hospital which I was applying for. Urgh!
Well, you didn't want to live in Wichita anyways. Just trying to lighten the mood, originally from missouri so just jazzing on Kansas folk
