Matched Interns: Is the Glass Half Full or Half Empty and Leaking
Miserably?" "

Of course I immediately printed this, since I am compulsive about info relating to match right now. The article reprints APPIC's new online instructions that "data from the APPIC Match consistently show that submitting more than 15 applications does not improve applicants' chances of being matched, and APPIC recommends that most applicants should submit no more than 15 applications." It then goes on to note "the statement that submitting more applications is not facilitative of match is not strictly supported by our data" in the sense that more applications are linked to more interviews, and the number of interviews you get is the strongest predictor of match.

I'm not adding much that the previous poster didn't already summarize, but I have to say that if I had seen that laid out by the authors prior to making my application list, it would have been longer than 15!

The article is interesting, and has some suggestions for changing the match process to make it sequential (i.e., sites would review your minimum requirements and would invite you to submit your entire application if you meet them, allowing you to submit applications only to sites that really want to consider you), and making the clearinghouse a true lottery (which apparently it is in everything except for name).

up to 13 rejections, still waiting on 5 but judging by other's posts i think 2 will be rejections given that the sites have sent out invites up to a week and a half ago. but i wont count all my chickens before they're hatched... or not hatched in the case of rejections....? 🙂

Apparently an "average" number of interviews last year was 7 or 8. On this forum, at least (ackowledging that it's not over until tomorrow at midnight), the average number seems less than that (maybe even as low as 2-4). Does anyone have a sense, even if it's completely non-scientific, if (a) we are attracted to this board because we are particularly anxious about our lowish interview #s, making us a skewed sample, (b) people are getting fewer interviews this year across the board, or (c) something I'm not even thinking of?

Remember that if the number of applicants and/or the number of applications increase it will necessarily increase the number of rejections sent out overall (unless the number of positions increase which is not likely to be significant this year) . So statements that more people are receiving more rejections this year (in what is not a systematic sample anyway) are likely to just drive up anxiety which is not productive at this stage anyway. More rejections result from more applications, whatever is causal. (There is the part about odds in gambling increasing with attempts over time but I don't have the skill to offer any analysis in that) And there is a gambling/risk factor in this process than just requires radical acceptance that you don't always win what you want.

Sites have usually figured out about how many applicants they need to interview in order to fill in the Match and I would guess very few sites have increased their number of interviews this year.

So keep the focus on do you have some interviews and how can you do your best in them...and do you have a back up plan and when will your dissertation be done--because having that done is an unquestionable standout qualification.

This post refers to UCSD/VA, correct? I also got an interview, and I agree that the man on the phone was very unclear about the specifics. He said he'd send an email confirmation later that day. After a week had gone by, I called and left a message, and I later received an email that just said "Interview is confirmed!" plus the date (that was the subject of the email, there was no body). I was really hoping for directions, hotel info, etc. Anyone else having this experience?

my guess is it is a compilation of factors. the spill-over from last year increases the number of applicants on this go and a good number of sites appear to have closed this year with disproportionately fewer sites opening to replace those lost slots. as a result, sites are receiving significantly more applications which effect everyone (i had one site who for the past 3 years has not had more than 30 apps and this year they had over 100...).

but in all fairness, its certainly not over yet and its very possible that what this board is reflecting are primarly (though not exclusively) students who are not feeling as though they are in a great place regarding interviews and looking for some support. thereby possibly skewing what is really happening on the national level.

Just my thoughts though again, this post will likely reflect my frustration and not feeling really good about my status so take it with a grain of salt.

Although I understand that it is tempting to study statistics about # of interviews, etc. in order to gain insight into our own fates, I am concerned that such activities may only serve to (unnecessarily) increase anxiety. It seems to me that application "success" rates depend on factors like the type of program you are training in, your particular specialty, and the nature of the sites to which you apply in addition to individual characteristics. Lumping "internship applicants" into one category and comparing yourself to those norms may not be the best practice and I worry that it's making this already horrid process worse for some of us.

Students from my program routinely apply to less than 15 sites (some less than 10!), most receive 5 interviews or fewer (and that includes past years of supposedly plentiful interviews), and nearly 100% match year after year. In fact, not matching is so rare that it has only really occurred when applicants were geographically restricted to an area with, say, two sites.

Take a deep breath everybody, it will all be over soon!!!! 🙂

I haven't heard anything from EVMS either. I was confused if I was even being considered still after they sent out the email saying they lost funding for the ESH rotation. I know another student in my program is also waiting to hear back from them!

I have one friend who has received 8 interview invitations so far and still had to hear from a few sites--but she is definitely the exception within my program this year. Most of us have only gotten 1 or 2 so far if any. :-(

I agree with what most of you have said regarding comparing and contrasting. The only thing it produces is insanity, and we all need to hold on to as much sanity during this process as possible. In regards to number of interviews, I have known people who had 2-3 sites to rank and matched, I have known people that have had 7 sites (the average) and not match. Honestly, at the end of the day it is an arbitrary endeavor, you can do everything right and not match. It literally feels like a roll of the dice and that's how I interpret it. If you only end up with a couple of interviews, then be a rockstar during those two. For those of you who have no interviews there is always the clearinghouse and I know people who would MUCH rather do the clearinghouse than have to go through this process. It's not over till February 23 so I think everyone should remain positive.

I know that the studies say that it doesn't help to apply to more than 15 sites, I chose to do more than that because that is what made me feel comfortable when I realized the number of people that were going to be applying this year. At the end of the day that may or may not work out for me, but it has helped to decrease my anxiety at this stage of the game. I think the type of sites you are applying to are more important than the number. I made my list with the mindset that I want to do everything in my power to match (keeping in mind that this the most random procedure I have ever participated in), because I don't EVER want to have to go through this again if I don't have to. There are literally thousands of people out there that are in anxiety hell right now because of the match. Anyway, thus far I have 6 interviews (4 APA, 2 APPIC) and I still have several I'm waiting to hear back from. Everyone take care of yourselves and I'm wishing you all the best of luck.

So, I just got an email rejection from Franciscan Hospital. What's really weird is that they called me on Friday. I wasn't able to take the call, but called back and left a message. Could it be that my interview spot was given to someone else because I wasn't able to answer their call? I'm tempted to email them for clarification. It seems odd that they would call, then send a rejection. What do you guys think?

Personally, I would. It isn't likely to change their decision, but if it makes you feel better then why not? It's not like they can reject you AGAIN 😛 I would prob try calling first, too, b/c I like holding ppl accountable over the phone better than e-mail, but that is just me.

Be prepared though. The fact that their message didn't say anything either way might just mean they didn't want to leave a rejection on your VM.

It is entirely possible. UMass has someone separate from their TD (who does the notifications) sending the travel info. Prob means you got an invite tho! 🙂

Rejections this morning from Springfield Hospital Center, Bellevue, and St. Luke's Roosevelt.

Still waiting on 5 - not feeling optimistic. My poor clients are going to have a run-down clinician today.

The people who design/run the process must be sadists. Who puts a bunch of over-achievers (as most, if not all, grad students are by the time we reach this point) into a process in which receiving 10 rejections is normal?! It is just wrong!

FYI, pharmacy grad students have to do an internship year too, and they rank-order their choices and also have no control over where they go, BUT they are GUARANTEED a spot SOMEWHERE (as I understand it). Maybe APPIC needs to take a look at their system... (No reply necessary form those of you who are going to say "it wouldn't work." Let me wallow!).

While I just got a rejection from somewhere, I must say that for me the level of 'sting' is mediated by the type of rejection letter. The one I just got was just about the nicest thing I've ever read, explaining that there were so many applicants and how wonderful I was but that they just decided to go another direction, etc. However, the other day I got one that basically just said something along the lines of 'we evaluate based on a point system. Your application did not recieve sufficient points to be considered further.' Rude.

I'm just saying, but it doesn't take much to draft a generic, but nice letter. Someday, many moons from now, when I'm settled in my career and sending someone a rejection letter, I'm going to make it nice.

i agree! i've received a few that have been very nice (for a rejection letter) and some that were... well different. I had one letter that was actually addressed to another applicant, needless to say i clung to the fact that maybe SHE was rejected but not me. that was not the case. hahaha. all i can do at this point is laugh about the stress.

I'm in a Counseling Psych program. She and I are the only 5th-years applying from my program (there were 2 others in our cohort, but they are currently on internship). We have 5 others from the 2006 cohort (4th-years) applying this year too, plus at least one I know of from the 2004 cohort. (6th-year).

That makes some sense. Maybe they started emailing and calling around the same time. I would imagine it is going to take quite a while to contact everyone by phone. Keeping the fingers crossed.

Hello all 🙂. I'm there with you all on the anxiety and disappointments. I am so glad tho that these rejections don't define who I am and what I'm capable of. The two rejections I got were from sites that I wasn't excited about, and I'm so glad they did. The problem now is waiting for the other sites to respond!

Anyway... I wanted to ask for advice here... I got an invitation to interview last week. In the first email I received, the training director wrote that she sent out an invitation to interview (the week before) and had not heard back from me. Guess the first email did not go through... so I emailed back to the training director to explain that I did not receive the first email, and immediately, her secretary called me to schedule the interview - date set!

Just a few minutes ago, I get an email from the same training director with a rejection email. "After we have reviewed your application materials, we are unable to offer you an interview.." what? I hope it's a mistake... maybe the interview offer was a mistake lol. This is a respectable APA site. Just hoping that this year has been busy-chaotic and not a red-flag.

So should I email the training director to clarify?

ALSO - anyone applying to Gouverneur? Did you have to send work samples? nowhere on their website or the APPIC site did it say that they required work samples.

If they scheduled the interview, go to the interview. Even if they did make an error, at this point they should see you but I think you can in good conscience just go to the scheduled event and assume the rejection was an error.

I disagree. I would call and confirm. In the event they did not mean to extend an interview, you could potentially waste hundreds of dollars on travel for a place where you will not be formally considered.
