2010-2011 Internship Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those of you hearing from Citrus health-

What time did you hear (eastern time)? How did you hear (email/phone)?

I'm also sorry for the debate I started, and the way it detracted from the primary goal of this forum (to provide support). Obviously we're all stressed and antsy, and I just think it's especially important not to get sucked into a downward spiral where we start feeling dejected about life choices or feel like we obviously don't have enough to offer if we get a string of rejections. Reading the positive, supportive comments here really makes me feel like there are going to be some great psychologists out there in the coming years. It may sound naive, but I really feel like what's meant to happen will happen. Here's wishing everyone interviews by the end of today.

I heard from Citrus about an hour ago through email....... Good luck! IsItOver, I think you are hilarious!!! 😛

Just received a 2nd rejection from Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital. Guess they're really driving their message home

...judging from the number of people that seem to be awaiting responses, I'm guessing that they must have been overly bombarded with applications this year...unlike in prior years

Rejection from Virginia Treatment Center.

Dejection, rejection, Id rather have an infection? lol

*knocking on wood so I don't jinx myself*

Congrats PhDee!

I like "interjection."

"Rejection, dejection, what's your interjection?" I've got a few interjections...

Thanks!

I have started an internship chorus line! Oh, this literally brings a song to my heart. 🙂

Has anyone applied to Kaiser Permanente LA? Their final notification day is not until the 20th, but I was wondering if people are hearing from them...

Has anyone heard anything (good or bad) from the following sites?

The Guidance Center in Long Beach, CA
Geisinger Medical Center (child track)
Children's Hospital of Orange County

I think some people need to think about why they chose to study Psychology in the first place. Personally, I thought the goal for mental health professionals was to practice acceptance, be open-minded and provide support. How can one do that in a therapy room and not here on a blog......

:xf:

I've been told repeatedly in the last 6 months that it is because we're still human. I continue to ask the same question as you do, though, because I have a really hard time understanding how someone wanting to be a psychologist can live with the enormous double standard of criticizing and backstabbing others while preaching to clients about making positive changes.

Just received a phone call interview from Lincoln. This really made my day :luck: I am hoping everyone receives good news. :xf:

Just a heads up for folks waiting on woodhull....they have extended their notification date to tomorrow 12/16. Apparently they had glitches with the new AAPI online and will be notifying people tomorrow. I hope it's good news...they're my top site!

Thanks for sharing -- how did you go about finding that out? I'm wondering if other sites I have applied to have also extended their notification dates.

Good luck!!!:luck:

Sometimes I feel like everyone on here had the same internship site list, hah. Seems like everyone is waiting for the same sites.

I heard from UMDNJ (newark) this morning. I also heard for Virginia Treatment Center for Children this afternoon. I know there were a few others waiting to hear from them as well.

I'm now officially done! I've heard from everyone and can stop being compulsive and return to my regular life now. 🙂

Was it interview contact from UMDNJ? what track? Thanks.

CHOC had sent some notifications out yesterday.

Oregon Health Science sent out notifications today. So did The Help Group.

I just received an interview notice from a place that rejected me yesterday. When I called, they said that the rejection was an error (I could have told them that 😉). Seems a little weird, but I'll take it!!

For those who have asked about WVU Morgantown: Both the CC and the Med School have sent out emails today.

How weird! But a better error than the reverse!

:wtf:Wow. In the same breath you say "My post wasn't meant to be insulting" and then continue to be insulting and to generalize. Obviously you think very highly of yourself and your program compared to others, which makes me wonder what kind of training they are giving you...

I do want to apologize to the forum as a whole for letting myself get sucked into an argument that really does not need to take place here. I am obviously anxious as well, and probably a little more sensitive because of it.

I appreciate your apology. Notice that none of my posts were explicitly individually insulting or inflammatory in content or tone. I am stating facts and tendencies grounded in reality, which you are interpreting as insulting because you're taking it personally. On the other hand, you just made a personal and insulting comment about my attitude and the quality of my education. If there are any posts that aren't becoming of future psychologist, its these. I am also well aware of how PsyD programs work, and I actually like the PsyD model, just not their implementation at Alliant, Agrosy, Fielding, et al. Their APA internship match numbers speak for themselves.

The only things I said that can clearly be taken negatively are three comments I made about the perception of freestanding professional programs by staff at competitive institutions: 1) training/quality varies greatly (which is true, some like Rutgers/Baylor are quite better than others), 2) the caliber of students vary (which is also true, several PsyD schools near me do not require the GRE and have taken applicants with 2.3 GPAs), and that 3) freestanding professional school take too many applicants. That's not just my opinion by the way, there have been numerous complaints made by organizations to the APA on this matter, and APPIC is actively meeting to address this issue.

Going back to the original points:

1) The original poster had good credentials, and it's a fair guess (and the poster suggested it themselves), that it was because of their institution that they got few interviews.

2) Competitive internship sites (and employers) generally prefer Clinical PhDs from reputable institutions. Again, look at the APPIC data. I went back and looked at all 8 of the medical centers/hospitals/VAs I applied to (all of which I got interviews at). I count ~ 197 Clinical PhDs, and 5 PsyDs interns in the last three years. That's not a coincidence. In my area, there are a lot of PsyD applicants, so the numbers speak for themselves.

3) Clinical PhDs from competitive programs do apply to more competitive internship sites than PsyDs. This is also a fact. This is not just true of psychology, Harvard Medical school graduates of course end up applying to more prestigious/competitive residencies... The major PsyD programs near me either explicitly discourage applying to APA sites, or many students don't even bother because they just want to go into private practice. Again, there are exceptions, but considering that these programs produce most of the private practitioners in CA, they reflect the major trend here.

Getting back to the heart of the matter: I empathized with the OP, and said its a shame they're having difficulty, echoing the general sentiment on this board that its a shame the APPIC match process is leaving more and more students unmatched every year. This is a systemic problem and its discouraging that nothing is being done about it. I just hope that future generations of students don't have to be privy to this mess.

Please. please lets leave this conversation for another time or forum. others who have also expressed opinions regarding this matter have apologized and noted that this is indeed not the PLACE or TIME for this. i respect the fact that everyone will have an opinion regarding this topic, some mor or less passionate though students, such as myself, are here for support and to encourage others and seek the same out. this topic is only serving to UNNECESSARILY provoke students (even if unintentionally) during a time that no-one needs the additional stress/frustration/annoyance or whatever else you chose to call it.

please and thank you

In contrast, the PsyD vigilantes here seem to be quite angry and defensive.

2) Competitive internship sites (and employers) generally prefer Clinical PhDs from reputable institutions. Again, look at the APPIC data. I went back and looked at all the medical centers/hospitals/VAs I applied to (none of which were super academically-focused like UCSF). I count 197 Clinical PhDs, and 5 PsyDs interns in the last three years. That's not a coincidence. In my area, there are a lot of PsyD applicants, so the numbers speak for themselves.

3) Again, there are exceptions, but considering that these programs produce most of the private practitioners in CA, they reflect the major trend here.

Ok, I will try to make this brief and not be sucked in.
1) My apology was to the ppl being subjected to this, not you. You are continuing to subject them (as apparently am I).
2) When did this become between you and I? You seem to be forgetting others who disagreed with you.
3) There seems to be a misunderstanding. You talk about "freestanding programs" being the problem, but talk about Alliant, etc. I am not positive about the others, but Alliant and many other schools with the word "Professional" in the name are APA accredited.
4) You aim this initially at me (I assume) and then generalize all PsyD's as vigilantes who are angry and defensive, which again seems pretty aggressive and insulting to a large group of people.
5) If you only look at programs YOU applied to than of course the results will be biased, just as my results will show more PsyDs being acccepted at the programs I applied to.
6) Many states outside CA require APA accredited school and internships for licensure. If your problem is with CA's licensing requirements I believe that is another dicussion.

That is it for me. I officially sign off of this debate as this is not the place to have it. Again, I apologize to others who did not want to hear my response, I just can't seem to let the comments slide by unquestioned.

Interview at L. Gildner Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents - notification by phone.

And a special apology to you, because I was busy writing my response when you submitted yours, and I think your response would have done just fine! 🙂

Congrats SteelMariposa!!!

Got an invite to Gouverneur in NY 5 minutes ago! They are scheduling their interview next week Monday and Tuesday! Too soon!

Congrats! That is super short notice tho! I hope you aren't having to make flight reservations this last minute.

Yes- weeks ago! I haven't received a rejection just yet- but that is what I am expecting being that they made interview offers so long ago. *sigh*

Alright, I feel like I'm getting a little obsessive (and by that I mean I got a "little" obsessive days ago), but has anyone heard anything from Trinitas yet?

ANY news from them would be great... (at least I'd be able to infer one way or the other)...

Thanks!

Congrats to all who've gotten interviews and fingers crossed for everyone still waiting to hear!

Finally got my rejection from UCSD, but got an interview at the Pacific Islands VA. 🙂 I've officially heard back from all 14 of my sites!

Hang in there, all. Based on people's thoughtful posts, this forum is full of talented, accomplished, and generous people. Good luck, everyone. :luck:
