Anyone know what the surrounding area is like? I've heard its kind of like living in Detroit...

I grew up in Brentwood, TN, which is 10 min outside of Nashville...so I know a little about the area. Nashville itself is actually really nice...it is an awesome place for people in their 20's and 30's. The city isn't huge, but it is big enough, and you can always find something to do. They have really been working on making the city nicer, and have done a great job. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

Hello all...I am fairly new to SDN...I am also interested in Meharry. I wanted to know if anybody would be willing to post the secondary?

Well hello newbie! The prompt is Why do you wish to attend Meharry? Hope this helps you. The interview at meharry was the coolest one I went on because the ppl were so great. We went to dinner and even went to the airport together. So I hope I get accepted this year.

Good luck everyone! I am applying here as well.

Hey folks, how long is everyone's response to the "Why Meharry" secondary question?

Mine was actually quite short, something like 3 paragraphs. I think I was deceived by the small box though, because I was checking through last years thread and people were writing 1-2 pages. 🙁 I'm afraid I might have ruined my chances because of that.

I don't think so. It's the quality of what you write. My response last year was short, bout a paragraph an I still got an I interview within 10 days of my file being complete. Don't worry.PrAy

do you when invites started last year?

My AMCAS application is not verified yet 🙁 since I sent in a bit late..August 10.. I praying that they'll send me a secondary once my application is verified. Does anyone know if Meharry has a website where we can check our status? 😕

Everybody gets a secondary. So, you shouldn't worry about that. 🙂

can anyone give me detailed information on meharry's curriculum? or where i can get this info? i have already read this thread and last year's thread, been on meharry's website, and tried google.

thank you! 🙂

Hello,

Can people shed some light on how long their secondary essays were? Mine is sitting at a whopping 989 words (around 6,000 characters with spacing). Is this too long?

Thanks!

So submitted my secondary like a week ago. Still haven't gotten a complete email. I wonder how long it takes to get one. They should have gotten everything. Anybody know?

i recieved a complete email 7 days after submitting my secondary.

Did Meharry start screening this year? I just received this email:

"This E-mail is to acknowledge receipt of your 2011 AMCAS electronic application by Meharry Medical College. You will receive further communication within one week after the initial review of your application has been completed."

Did you all get this??

This was my first email from them, I haven't received an invitation to submit the secondary or anything...

They do screen. It says so on the website. Last year I didnt get my secondary right away and had to call.

Thanks! I guess it would also have been helpful if I would have read the first page of comments a little bit more carefully before freaking out 🙂

I'm a newbie sdn so bare with me. Does anyone know why the medical schools require photographs of applicants as part of the secondary process? I just think its a little odd when each school claims to be "equal opportunity".

I am complete and I did not send a photo. I thought it was odd because most of the other schools asked for them. Did I miss that part of the secondary for Meharry? I'm so confused 😵

i don't remember being asked to send a picture either

Still waiting on my secondaries 🙁 I am new to the thread and haven't seen the prompt posted yet.

Can someone please post the questions from the secondary? Tnx

Divajai,

Hopefully we can interview together. I was there on a weekend full of snow and ugly weather. Drove up the day before and left the day of. I didn't get to hang out with the group nearly as much as I wanted to but its tough when the city was supposed to be pounded with snow. I hope we aren't interviewing for waitlist spots this year though!

Awww, I hope we interview together to. I had a great experience last time.

Yeah, I wonder when they will start handing out interview. And I wonder how they feel about reapplicants? I would really love the chance to go back.

reading last year's thread, it's looking like interview invites don't start until october. so maybe we should all relax a little bit.

Anyone read up on the four vs. five year MD program?

Yeah but I was hoping for early news. 😉 Sure would be nice.

I was wondering about the 5 year program as well - is that different from the post-baccalaureate program?

Does anyone know stats for the post-bac program? Specifically, I'm interested in the percentage of students that end up matriculating into the medical school after completion of their first post-bac year?

Hi guys. Anyone has the secondary app essay topic for this year. it would be very helpful. thanks.

I believe the five year program starts in late june while the four year starts in august. In june they give you basic biochem and such. I dont think its up to the applicant to choose between 4 and 5 but dont quote me on that. I have a friend who is doing the five year and she started in june.

Starting my application now. Kind of excited based on the thread. Did people do a lot of research about Meharry for their essays? I guess the lack of guidelines is throwing me for a loop

I took the MCAT today *Whew* I just wanna go! I don't care if it's 4 years. 5 years. 6! Hopefully not 6, but after blogging with some pretty nasty folks today, it reminded me that being a Meharry graduate would mean having all the assumptions that go along with the dreaded phrase: You-ARRA-EMM! Dun-Dun-Dun!😱

Seriously, I love this school mission. That stigma is one I would carry like a cape from my neck's nape. Just waiting to be complete. I believe, I believe, I believe!!!

My advice: dig deep. Dig real deep. Tell the who, what, when, where, and why about who you are and how that is connected to Meharry's mission. Sounds cliche, right? One of my English teachers told me that and it gave me an "ah-ha!" moment.

Cost of living is low.
Like any city, there are good and bad parts of town.
Parking is great most everywhere.
There are lots of malls, and lots of tourism.
People are friendly. If you're from the coasts, Chicago, or Detroit, you'll find their southern hospitality refreshing.
Some people say the area surrounding Meharry is "not so great," but compared to NYC or DC it's like living in the Land of Oz.
I'm not from Nashville, these are just my opinions having visited there and from what I've heard from my friends at TSU.

That's because they're not. They want to see what you look like so they can put you in a box based on the photograph. What else would they possibly do with a picture?

There are plenty of forums all about "equal opportunity" and med school. Trust.

America. Land of the free, home of the brave enough to blog on the internet about "equal opportunity," but not in real life.

Equal opportunity? Thats a joke when it comes to applying to med school. Majority of the schools that I applied to require a recent pic, why else would they need it if it wouldnt affect your application. I am assuming that based on your pic, they can come up with certain conclusions about who you are and whether whats on your application is true or not. lol thats why I had a great pic taken at fedex, good luck to everyone!

to make sure that its you who comes for the interview and not someone else thats my theory

But if thats the case, then they would request a pic if you are invited for an interview. Most schools said that a pic is not required but "Strongly suggested", so they base part of their decision on the pics.

some schools say its not required at time of secondary but will be required if extended an invite. so i think to just make things easier they want to have everything at once but i have no doubt that the picture might play a role but hey ppl are always bias no matter how much they try

May I ask what you mean regarding this stigma? I heard a few things but I am not sure.

Hey guys! I've been following this forum for a while and finally decided to jump in. I plan on applying to Meharry SOM August 2011. Does anyone know what the typical MCAT and GPA range of those admitted into Meharry are?

It is a well-known fact that most medical schools specifically seek out URM applicants and love diversity, and 🙄 the picture is not so that they can judge you based on your appearance and/or the color of your skin. You have probably already designated your race and ethnicity on your primary application anyways, of which Meharry must be in receipt if they have asked you for a secondary+picture. You will want to provide them with a nice picture so that they have a face to match with a name at the interviews, and also so they can feel like they are reviewing a real person and not a collection of words on a piece of paper. That is why pics are suggested but not required. Take a pleasant picture to provide to them and don't get unnecessarily worried or worked up about it.

Any interview candidates willing to post their MCAT? I don't want to waste money on apps if I have no chance..thank you!
