Such misinformation in your post. From what I've seen, the opposite is true. First of all the trend in the past 3-4 years has been no significant change in number of applicants. It's possible that the caliber of applicants has increased, but I don't see why that would be the case. Second of all, from what I've seen the number of schools applied to has increased. At several interviews at the deans' intros it was mentioned that there was a forecast of a record number of applicants at those particular schools. As such it should follow that there will be more waitlist movement than usual as applicants are forced to relinquish their multiple spots. Most schools don't release this information, but the one school that does (UMich) had the following to say
The difference between UMich and a lot of other schools is that UMich tries to avoid taking applicants from the waitlist, so while UMich will simply increase the number of straight acceptances other schools will likely take more off their waitlists.
And yes your observation that the waitlists haven't been used so far this year is way off since most waitlists move in May. The few schools that take off the waitlist this early (Wake Forest, Buffalo) have had movement that is in line with previous years.

If you're going to err, try to not err on the side that would make everyone even more anxious.

I appreciate your opinion, if you have any solid facts, please let us know.
You said in your post that adcomm people said they have received record number of apps. Do you know for sure that people are applying to more schools or are there more applicants from the total pool? I have seen the stats also from the last 3-4 years, they are in the books we all read. My point was about "this" year, not past years, we will have to wait and see at the end of the cycle if the pool is bigger or people applying to more schools. If you look back at past year threads some schools have gone to the waitlist by this time, one thread I follow is Albany, last year they hit the UC list by this time, does not seem to be the case this year. Why not? I don't think anyone knows.

We should end this tiff.

GoWiththeFlo, if we're using past years as an indication, THERE IS NO WAITLIST MOVEMENT AT NYU UNTIL MAY.

Since y'all are so big on sources...Last year's thread, dated May 3rd

Last year it moved slightly around Tuesday of this week. Then again after the May 15th deadline. Supposedly, then every 2 weeks there is another group of acceptances.

I do think most of them came after May 15th though.

The first post of WL acceptance was May 17th

Just got an email at 2:52 pm today that I got in off the waitlist!!! I am so beyond excited and am freaking out!!!!

I don't know why I just did that since I got in in Dec, but hopefully we can stop fighting about this?

I also think we should be a little more gentle in this thread. So, gently, I believe that last year people started getting accepted of the waitlist March 22nd, as well as in May later on. Have a look.

My bad. You're totally right. But regardless, it was AFTER the March 1 date. No one should be expecting NYU WL movement at this point in time, it's still too early.

I apologize if I came off as aggressive, but I've been hanging around this thread along with everyone else who was anxiously awaiting a decision for the past few weeks and have also been waitlisted. When someone comes in telling us that being on the waitlist is "bad news", and based on their posting history seems not to have even interviewed at NYU, it's irritating. His assumptions were wild and not based off of substantial fact. Not only that, he then goes on to ridicule me for using the word "dude"?

Excuse me for not taking his feelings into more consideration. And grow up, dude.

Back to the admissions/waitlists themselves- are we really thinking that NYU has purposefully pushed all their acceptances to the first few months of the interview season, leaving the last two-plus months of interviewees left fighting for a waitlist spot? Seriously?

If that's true, that's just cruel and I'm pretty sure I don't want to attend such a school.

Hey I just want to know- did ANYONE who received a decision this second round receive an acceptance? Or have they all been waitlists/rejections?

Just to clarify, the Under Consideration list at Albany isn't a waitlist, per se. They give applicants a score and move the cutoff for admission down further and further as time passes during the application cycle. Then, come May 15, the top half (might be top third, I forget which) of the UC list is converted into the Albany waitlist, and functions as a normal waitlist...

Are there post interview rejections?

I interviewed in October and didn't get the waitlist Email yet.

came back from vacation to a seemingly innocuous, but wicked little email in my inbox from nyu. I am a little sad about being waitlisted, but still very hopeful! :luck: Good luck to everyone else who really wants to get off this waitlist!

Agreed 100%. That e-mail was completely ridiculous and Ace had every right to say everything he said. Not over-aggressive at all. Dude, I'm with you, dude.

Hopefully I get some sort of status update in 5 or so hours. Did the people that got waitlisted have their status page change yet?

No status change for me (a waitlister). Let us know what happens!

Nope, I got waitlisted on 2/25 and it still says "Final Decision Pending". Although, I supposed that status is still true, so perhaps there was no need for them to change it.

Are other waitlisted people going to send letters of interest? I can't decide if it makes more sense to send one now, or wait til the list starts moving. Any thoughts?

I think in the past people who got waitlisted had statuses that reflected this (eventually). I think you can send an LOI now since sometimes NYU takes off the waitlist as early as (late) March.

What does a letter of interest entail? Do you have to provide new information (recent experience, awards, etc.) or can you just talk about why you are interested in the school?

In the past I have understood that to be true at Albany, and agree with you, but here is an interesting post on the Albany thread. Things are different this year. So why are they different? Perhaps more applicants to choose from. Speculation on my part.

Here is the post, sorry cannot bold or italic the post:

]Ok, so last year, they took people off UC as early as January. And when I interviewed in October, they said they expected to review the UC list for the first time in January, and would likely accept off the UC list then. I called them in early February, and they explained the UC list is a completely different way than I've heard before. They said they wouldn't touch UC until May 15, but would accept off UC before releasing a wait list. They said they would release the wait list in early June. So say they release the wait list on June 1, they would accept people off UC between May 15 and June 1, then would transfer some of the remaining UC people to the wait list and reject the rest. UC isn't a wait list, but it's also not something they're going to review until they know how many seats they will have open.

I think people might be hanging onto multiple acceptances longer than they expected.

Rejected via status at midnight. Good luck everyone else.

Edit: Interviewed October.

Status changed to "Wait listed" for me. Sorry to hear, Wanderer, thanks for telling the rest of us though.
Thanks for your help.

I just wish they would have told me earlier instead of dragging it out this long when they knew they weren't going to take me all along.

Dude, 18 interview invites? That's a strong showing! Hope you end up someplace that makes you happy.

I definitely got burnt out at the end though. My advice to future applicants would be to cut down on interviews, especially since the more competitive schools tend to be slower with the invites, and you want to be fresh for your later interviews. Not saying that's why I didn't get in to Sinai, NYU etc. but it certainly didn't help. (and I actually got in to the first 2 schools I interviewed at, and I don't think anyone really needs more than one interview to warm up).

Thanks for the support. I'm sure I'll be happy wherever, but it might take some more getting used to being far away from my current support system.

Rejected also, my interview indeed was very short and impersonal. Not sure NYU is going for fit but instead numbers/school prestige as I have heard in the past. Anyways left a sour taste in my mouth as my interviewer told me that they needed more applicants like me at the school. I am more convinced everyday that interviews have very little to do with the final decision process.

Rejected by Status Page. My interview here was only 10 minutes long!
Mine was 20 and my interviewer clearly did not read my file or give a damn.

Fwiw I was the only guy on my interview day that was not from a top 25 school (my school is not even close). I think I could have performed better at the interview but they are definitely prestige ******.

I feel you on this for sure. My interview was under a half hour. Nice guy, but didn't seem too interested or make me feel like our conversation was playing a major role in my application.

I go to a school that no one has EVER heard of on the east coast, so I will be surprised to be getting into any upper tier schools out there. Too bad, really. Everyone is all amped up on diversity? Try letting in some students from lesser known schools that still have the stats and ECs. Oh well.

Yea, I'm not trying to say it's impossible to get in from an unknown school, you just need to be that much better than a similar applicant applying from a top school. I think diversity as selected for by these schools is mostly BS. It seemed that most of the students at a lot of these schools were pretty much the same once you spoke to them for more than 15 minutes. Nothing wrong with that, but hearing schools go on and on about diversity makes me sick.

Congrats on the Vanderbilt acceptance!

My interview here lasted 50 mins and was loads of fun...waitlisted 🙁

Is there a Facebook page for NYU yet? I guess they would have to accept a few people for that to happen though..

Is it common for people to join fb groups even if they haven't committed to a school yet? I think I'd probably hold off.

My interview here was one of my best, and it lasted about an hour! 😱 (long for an NYU interview), and yet a waitlist... I concur that the interview here doesn't impact the decision process that much.. Just my opinion though...

I think everyone (save for diverse standouts and solid applicants from before the dreaded November 15th cutoff) just has to deal with the waitlist for at least a few weeks, it seems to be how NYU operates. I don't see it as good or bad, they are just buying some time until their current acceptances either stay or go.

Do we have to send them an email indicating that we "accept the wait list" or do they automatically just put us on the wait list? From their email I am guessing that they automatically do it, but I just wanted to be sure.

Thanks! 🙂

I think it's automatic too, but that's just my informed guess.

does anyone know when second look is?? it's not on their application calendar thingy on their website.

Are you sure there's a second look? I feel like there isn't, but I could be confusing it with another place.

You could send an email to the ambassadors or whatever they're called. I remember a sheet in the interview day packet with an email address for questions.

I seem to remember on last year's thread that a second look in April was mentioned... maybe that was the webinar?

I am pretty sure I remember hearing that they did have a second look weekend from the student I stayed with..

What do you do for second look if you live in the same city?
