Just to respond to earlier criticisms of Sinai's neighborhood and lack of bars/fun stuff...I had the privilege of choosing between NYU and Sinai last year, and went with Sinai for many reasons, but I also was initially concerned about the availability of options for fun nearby. After nearly a year at Sinai, and as a pretty big partier, I can safely say that MSSM's neighborhood is by no means lacking, and in some ways, I actually prefer it to NYU's location. There are several bars within a block of our dorm - Neka is a nice restaurant/bar across the street, Kinsale's is a rowdy Irish pub right around the corner, and a place called Earl's just opened up half a block away and is a great meeting place for Sinai students, to name a few examples. Is it as densely packed with bars as downtown might be? Nope, but that's kind of what I like about it - I have a few neighborhood spots to go to when the mood strikes, and if I want to go downtown, I can take a 15-20 minute ride on the 6 which is a block away right into the heart of Union Square or Astor Place. And don't forget that Sinai's location allows it to charge much less than NYU overall per year. At the end of the day, you're in New York City. Nothing really is more than a $2.25 subway ride and 20 minutes of transit time, and that to me was a small price to pay for being a bit farther uptown at a school I liked a little more. And plus, there's nothing like studying at the top of Annenberg with its magnificent views of Central Park, the Reservoir, and the entire city before you. It never gets old.

I don't think you could go wrong between NYU and MSSM, both are phenomenal schools. In fact, I am still a huge fan of NYU for so many reasons, and I had a very, very hard time picking between the two. My point is, just don't be quick to write off MSSM because of its apparent lack of bar options 🙂 Feel free to PM me with any questions!

Tried to find the fb group online but couldnt till I got here. Someone needs to edit the settings of the group to make it more open online. There are only 18 people in it, prety low.

Hmmmmm.... it's set to "Open" and I just switched it to "Closed" then back to open, and you're right I can't find it in the search. Any suggestions?

I noticed that the "icon" FB assigns a group is not the same as for other med school's FB groups. Ours here is one of those graduation hats, where as usually its a yellow/brown looking thing with the outlines of two people. I'm talking about the icon that comes up to the left of the group name on the left hand of the FB webpage. Wish I knew how to do screen shots.

I think what this means is that we're a differnt type of group, and thats probably why we can't be searched. Should find a way to change this. I'm sure theres tons of people looking to join.

I think that's just an aesthetic thing. I changed it, and I don't think it helped.

Are you in the group already? I'll make you an admin so you can mess around with it if you want.

I chose the icon when I first made the group. The old "group" icon, with two people in it, is the icon assigned to old groups -- groups created before Facebook made weird changes to the way groups work. To be honest I can't for the life of me figure out why the group isn't searchable.

Should we tear it down and rebuild?

There's nothing to tear down... if you "remake" the group, the only questions you'll be prompted to answer are group name, icon, open/closed/secret privacy, description/photo, and friends to add to the group. I'm wondering if there's some sort of membership threshold we need to break to make the group searchable...

I think I'm gonna just ask Facebook.

Does anyone have any information on NYU's re-applicant policy? I interviewed there in December and absolutely fell in love with the school. In the event that I re-apply next cycle I was wondering if they are positive about re-applicants, if they provide post-rejection feedback, if they interview a lot of re-applicants, etc.

Does anyone have a recent match list for NYU that you could PM me?

Does anyone know how a recommendation letter should be sent to NYU from my current PI at my lab? Could he just send it to them directly? Thanks!

Are you waitlisted? I would think sending directly is good. That's what you do when sending letters of interest or updates. You should call them.

Thanks NeuroE! Yup I'm on the wait list... hoping for the best!

Wow. Just got the worst financial aid package possible (literally, I think...all unsubsidized loans except for the 8.5k federal loan) from NYU. Do they tend not to give a lot of need-based grant money? Otherwise perhaps I messed up my forms epically  :scared:

I got the exact same, and was wondering the exact same!

I got a pretty good chunk of grant/scholarship money, and a mystery loan with someone's name attached to it that I can't find any info on. I'm pretty unadvantaged though.

If you get in off the waitlist this summer ( which is apparently where alot of the class come from) do they rush a financial aid package to you?

I just got a call with a full tuition merit scholarship award. I was not expecting this at all. Good luck to those waiting to hear something!

Hey you should tell them to shove that money my way when you withdraw 😀

Seriously!

I wonder how the merit scholarship selection process works if those in the second half of the interview season were interviewing for the waitlist. Surely there are some people in that group who might have qualified, eh?

I also got the exact same and was wondering the exact same! 👎

Ah, sorry to hear I'm not the only one. No NYU for me assuming one of my other NY schools rolls out something better...and I guess it really couldn't be anything but better considering haha

Congrats on the scholarship, Brainbuff! That's pretty huge. And glad to hear your package was better, Neuro =)

Thanks! I wish it could be better for everyone. Too bad we don't live in Norway! (Free school, including grad school, and they even pay for Norwegians to go to college in other countries. What a dream boat.)

same story here. i think i remember seeing somewhere that the average indebtedness for NYU med grads was like 150K...so my wonderful 280K in mostly unsubsidized loans looks pretty awful.

i thought this was an april fool's joke...

I'm applying this coming cycle, so I don't know as much as you all, but I recently met the dean of admissions and financial aid at a recruiting thing at my undergrad. Do you qualify for much aid in undergrad? I asked her about disadvantaged students, and she said it's not uncommon for students with financial need to be given 25-30k/year just from need-based scholarship money. Also, they really are raising a significant amount of money at the moment to lower that avg. debt.

I went to a private undergrad, and came out with about 20k in loans total. The rest was covered through grant/scholarships from the school. So, yeah, I think I was pretty "needy" in undergrad and was expecting more from nyu. Is that what you were asking?

For the veterans: since I hold a better aid package somewhere else, is it worth talking to nyu about this in order to try to get a better package?

Has ::anyone:: made it off the waitlist yet? :/

Is there a reasonable time to expect some movement?

After, but close to, May 15 is very reasonable since that's the deadline for reducing your acceptances to 1. I would think the chance of so many people withdrawing so that spots open up for waitlisters before then is pretty small.

I think the time frame for waitlist movement at most schools is mid-late May after the 15th when people have to choose one acceptance

Considering most WL movement will happen around/after May 15th. What is the ideal time to send a LOI? The beginning of may?

Don't think it matters. It will be added to your file and when they review your file again, they will see it. Whether they read it or not is their decision...

Hey All-

I am wondering if anyone here might be able to explain some research strengths/notable departments at NYU, or even better, tell me a site where I can find what NYU is known for in terms of research / highlight some notable PI's and the work they are doing. Thanks.

Hi everyone! I am officially going to be a re-applicant to NYU this cycle and was wondering if anyone on here was a re-applicant this year and can share your experience. NYU's website has absolutely no info about re-applying...

I was a re-applicant this year, and I got in. Last year, I didn't even get an invitation to interview. So, I guess they do still consider re-applicants. There were a number of things I did to improve my application. First, I shadowed several doctors for a few months and got a strong letter of recommendation from one of them. I improved my essay with the help of some of the doctors I was shadowing. I practiced interviewing with several different people. Finally, I found a research position where I've been working this past year. Good luck!

For those that were interested, NYU can't accommodate guests (family/significant others) at the revisit events. Just an FYI.

Does anyone know where would we send an update letter/letter of intent (directly by email or by mail)? Thanks

Just a friendly bump for this thread. We're into May!
