2010-2011 PhD/PsyD Interview Invite thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Pointless email from IUP today almost gave me a heart attack! It was titled "Application to Our Program" :scared:

I am so relieved that both IUP & Rutgers PsyD are sending out invites next week. They are the last two programs that I am waiting on, and it feels like I have been waiting for years.

IUP's program looks really great (and a fully funded PsyD?!?) but I hear that Indiana PA is literally the middle of no where. For a funded program, I could probably put up with it. Anyone have similar thoughts/concerns? It doesn't seem like that many people on the boards applied to IUP.

I applied/interviewed at IUP last year, it is a very small school/campus and yes in the middle of nowhere, the campus is really pretty(not that it really matters but figured I'd throw it in there) and everyone that I met was super friendly and laid back

I was worried about being in the middle of nowhere especially having to commute to do internship/practicum stuff, I guess you have to weigh how important being in a city is to you, if you go to interview you will def get a sense of how small the town is though

hope that helps!

Got interviews from pretty high-ranked clinical programs but got rejected by some "safety" schools. What's the deal?
Is it really all by chance, match, or connection?

Ditto. It's making it very hard for me to assess my overall strength as a candidate, because there is no consistency at all. I didn't get interviews at the lowest ranked schools I applied to, even though the fit was as good as at the highest ranked school I applied to (where I got an interview). I guess applying to clinical programs really is, like a grad student friend of mine told me, "an absolutely insane crapshoot."

It depends! It could be all of the above depending upon the alignment of the planets, stars, sun, etc. Or who you know. Or maybe you were a great match (along with the umpteen other people who applied). It is indeed a roll of the dice sometimes. G'luck, everyone! :luck:

I recall applying to a school that most would have considered a safety, but I truly would have loved the opportunity to attend there due to my research interests (and they were ranked at the top of my list). My match with research experience/interests was perfect and well-aligned with a few select profs. My stats were well above their posted averages. I just knew I would receive an interview there. REJECTED! DO NOT PASS GO! DO NOT COLLECT $200! I was devastated. They were by no means a "top" program, but they were one of MY top programs. In the meantime, I previously had interviews at some top tier/ranked programs that I had considered reaches, so it made no sense to me.

Try not to get too overly dejected. Try not to take it personally (and I know that can be hard!). I know of profs who have taken students as "favors" to other profs or who tend to draw from students from "big name" labs. I know of profs who already had in mind who they were accepting prior to interview day. I know of profs who already knew they were not accepting anyone other than 1-2 specific students, and if they could not have those 1-2 students, then they were not accepting anyone.

There really are a lot of variables that go into play during the entire process, so do the best you can with what you have to present and try not to fret the rest that you have no control over! Again, g'luck! :luck:

Congrats everybody on ur invites..hey do any one know if Wright State is done with their invites.. and if Spalding has started their invites. these two are my top choice programs and i havent heard a word from them since i sent my application.. m feeling very anxious and disappointed too 🙁

I am an international student... and having to hear that some of them are getting invites and not I.... its disappointing and m getting into post mortem work-- trying to understand whr and what reasons my application may get rejected...

Hey tell me ,are we international students intimated much later after US students are informed or receive their invites???or around the same time??? and do we have separate interview dates.. becoz i assume we have phone interviews and i dont know if we share the same interview dates as you....

The wait is painful, especially when ur miles away and if u havent heard a word from any of the universities... and i have not recieved any response to my mails sent to these universities inquiring about my application status... i would like to know any information and ur opinion.. and m sorry if it was too much of ventilation!!!!

Thanks in advance 🙂.. my Best Wishes to u all!!!

Hello, I can only speak for clinical doctoral programs as I only applied to those this year [as an international student in the US]. As for these clinical programs, they usually treat international students with the same timeline because the interview dates are the same. There is no reason for them to set up another date just for international students as acceptance of international students is quite rare to start with. I mean like 10% is plenty. I am not sure if they will set up different dates for phone interviews though but I think the notice should be around the same time.

I have seen people being accepted from overseas. However, not being able to be interviewed in person can be potential barriers for them to issue an offer or even phone interview. If I were you I will email the POIs and ask instead of waiting in pain, especially if you've known that someone has already received invite. If everything fails I will pick up the phone and call at this stage. Of course also express your interest at the same time (either phone call or email) and I don't think it would sound too pushy that way. Just my opinions. Good luck.

I know that we've had international students (living outside the U.S.) apply to our program in the past, and they were contacted for interviews at the same time as everyone else. If they were unable to attend interview day, then they were offered the opportunity for phone interviews. I would presume that it would work the same for most programs.

G'luck! :luck:

That's how it works here too. We've had a fair number amount of diversity in the program many years (across the entire department, not just clinical), including many international students.

Even the people that I have spoken to on the phone are extremely friendly and more laid back than at other universities. What was their interview processes like?

I am a city girl, and by no means do I want to live in the forest. But IUP is fully funded, isn't it? I don't know if I could turn that down, if I were to get accepted. My game plan would be to live in Pittsburgh and commute. I hear it is aprox an hour away? I wonder if this is feasible.

Has anyone heard from Duquesne's Clinical Program? They said they would send interviews by last Friday (2/11), but I haven't heard anything. This is my last chance.

Best of Luck on everyone's many interviews and hard decisions as to where to go!

Really hoping that invites for IUP and Rutgers go out tomorrow...and that I get at least one!! 😱 Time has been dragging by...

Just got an invite for UNR! I was definitely not expecting my POI to call me on a Sunday, but I am so excited!

Hey guys, I'm definitely not expecting to hear anything positive from UT Austin (clinical phd) but I'm wondering what's going on with their interviews this year. I haven't seen anyone post an invite, I don't believe its on the list, and I've only seen two mentions of it on grad cafe. Can anyone shed some light? Like I said I'm not expecting good news, just curious.

Hi all--I posted this in the acceptances thread also, but since this seems to be the more active thread for now, I thought I'd try here too...

I noticed Temple was posted last night as acceptance offers having gone out Friday (2/11). Does anyone know if they are completely finished contacting people with offers of admission or if they were just startingT? They said they'd notify people of alternate status also, but I wonder if that isn't until later. Anyone know anything? Thank you!!

If you hear anything, would you mind letting me know as well? UT is at the top of my list. What does your status say when you log in to their page?

Just that my application was forwarded to the department for review. I'm pretty sure I would have heard something by now if there were good news but it's just weird that no one else on here has reported anything. 😕

Okay, so i know that the open house interview for st. john's has nothing to do with the interview invites, but as an applicant, I am really concerned that I haven't heard a peep from St. Johns about it AT ALL (no emails or phone calls, as the rest of you have been receiving). This makes me concerned that perhaps they didn't receive my application and/or documents or something....I know with St. Johns they wanted you to send it to a PO Box in Massachusetts. I sent some of my docs to the campus (which the dept has confirmed that they've recevied) and half to the PO box (which hasn't been confirmed by anyone with the school, but according to the US post office package tracker, it was received at the PO box).

Should I call grad admin again and ask why I am not hearing anything about open house invites? I dont know if there is a connection to that and to problems with missing documents/application...:scared:

I also applied there, and I didn't send anything to a P.O. Box. I did receive an email back in December confirming that my application was complete though. How confusing!😕

Thank you for the info and opinions Bluebluesky, paramour and ollie 🙂 a silver lining i must say.. I shall call the universities at the earliest.. i have applied only to Psy.D programs at these universities..

did you apply online or did you send a paper application? i'd just call

Oh goodness...that's super scary. I haven't heard anything yet. They said 3 weeks, didn't they? Wasn't expecting to hear anything from them so soon...haven't seen anything on gradcafe...also, didn't they say we were going to get an e-mail, not a phone call??

Thanks for answering my question, teebee! 😀 I hope your interviews go well!

I called the department this a.m. and they said interview invites for the Clinical Ph.D. program will go out by "the end of this week." Oye.

Last year, invites went out on 2/17 thru email. So this info is historically, on point. :xf:

👍 Congrats! Me too!

Yay! Congrats! I am a bit confused about picking the interview day. I suppose I am going to try for this weekend, since the Rutgers interview is the following weekend. I have not heard from them yet but my hope is still alive.

Anyone heard from St. Louis University Clinical PhD program? They sent out invites around this time last year. This school may be my last hope. Any news about this program would be most appreciated! Thanks and congrats to everyone that's received invites 🙂

I'm dying to hear from St. John's. According to last years schedule invites should be going out by the end of this week. Agonizing.

I'm also wondering if Ferkauf is done extending invites. I'm tempted to call & ask but also afraid of hearing the answer. Ahhh

Yeah it confused me at first too, but it was awesome to have so many dates to pick from. I went for Prez day or next weekend (I didn't apply to Rutgers) so I won't have to take off work. Good luck!! Hopefully we'll both be at *funded* programs :luck:

Rejection from Case Western sent via email. Expected since I called Thursday and they told me all but one invitation went out.

I hope they get back to us soon about the actual day. I am worried about renting a car/booking a hotel and making arrangements. This is short notice! 😱

Ditto!

Now just waiting to hear from LaSalle....anybody have any info on that school's timeline??

Anyone hear anything from Widener recently?

No, I had interviewed there for their first interview round. Have not heard anything yet. I do remember them saying that they were holding four interview days, so I would not give up hope yet if you haven't gotten an invite.

I just noticed another invite for Hofstra go up on GradCafe. Looks like they're still calling people! 🙂

Anyone heard from them today? I am still keeping my fingers crossed..

Just got an interview for Rutgers Clinical PsyD. Interview is 2/28.

My friend applied to their School PsyD program and has an interview for that on 3/3.
