Hey trio, any idea how much on campus housing is? I'm most probably gonna move in off campus, though, but if places are too costly i might stick with on campus housing.

Hhaa, I like how you're asking the Out of Stater....😛 If I"m not mistaken, it's somewhere around 1200 dollars per month for on-campus housing. For me, that's cheaper than off-campus housing, which will run 1200-1500/month shared. *sigh* Below is a PDF file I got from the housing website for you (and everyone else)

http://sls.downstate.edu/residential_life/accommodations/documents/Guidetotheresidencehalls.pdf

It LOOKS like a single studio will cost about 12K/year...which is about 1250 for a "10 month" academic year. To be sure, I'd suggest calling the office to get more accurate rates. At any rate, I have to deal with living off campus in order to get state residency the following year, which I believe many of you won't have to do! 🙂

Probably all loans. The FA office MAY be able to give you guidance (talk to Christina, one of the FA counselors)...but they also may just tell you that the school will not know until summer how much "aid" they can expect to give out.

I just talked to someone at the FA office and she told me that the need-based aid ranges from 2-7K a year. This is less than I'm receiving from the other school I'm holding an acceptance to so I'm going to withdraw. Good luck to you guys on the waitlist!

Man, I'm going to miss Brooklyn. 🙁

Ooo, that info is helpful! Thanks and good luck at your other school!! 🙂

Congratulations to all accepted off the Alternate List!!!

😍

I was wondering, how many of you finished and submitted all of the medical forms?
(I submitted mine but my checklist is noting that I have to take a "second PPD and Tdap at Student Health." I was wondering how urgent this was, and if it could wait till July without hurting my chances)

Also, how many of you submitted a Letter of Intent/Intrest?
I'm thinking of shooting one over soon

For the PPD, I believe Student Health has a requirement for those who were born outside the US. I don't know what the timing is for that, since the paper doesn't say. That being said, you can't register without their health clearance, so you probably have to do it 30 days before registration. I think you'll be fine if you can do it early July, when the paperwork is due.

Sorry I got mixed up, I forgot you have to go off campus the first year. Any idea where you're gonna find a place?

Thank you! I submitted a Letter of Interest about three weeks ago, but I still haven't even touched the medical forms. I was also worried that not having completed the medical forms would hurt my chances, but I guess I was wrong! Submitting a Letter of Interest/Intent is definitely valuable. It certainly can't hurt!

Haha, no worries! I've got a roomie and we're looking at Park Slope mainly...we're considering other areas such as Brooklyn Heights...but nothing has come up there yet.

got the acceptance tooo 🙂

good luck to everyone still waiting! definitely send in a loi.

Hi guys! I was just accepted off of the alternate list this morning too! Can't wait to meet all of you 🙂 Yayyy

alright, just emailed a LOI to the office of admissions addressed to Dean Marcia Gerber.
Do you think I should also email one addressed to the office of admissions?

Also, should I also mail a physical copy? who should I address that to?

I got the same phone call. Congratulation to all of you who got accepted. Can't wait to study with all of ya.

For the LOI, i just send to the office of admission (same goes to the header too). I didn't address to Dean Marcia Gerber though. I personally think a physical copy is unnecessary, and to an extent, redundant. But if you are feeling compelling to do so, why not? I don't think it hurts. Anyway, I wish you the best John, I cross my finger for you.

As the person above me posted, I feel a physical copy is not necessary at all.

I simply wrote a letter of intent, printed it out, put my signature on it, scanned it into a PDF and e-mailed it to admissions. They'll print it out and put it in your file for you.

Best of luck to you--I hope you get in.

Hey everyone, a question

every time I send an email with an attachment to the admission office, I always get a reply with this line at the end:

myemail[attachment "letter of intent.pdf" deleted by Admissions/Downstate]

I mention that I attached a file, and they never mention that they don't see a file... so I am assuming that they receive it. But the fact that they note the "a printed copy of this email will be placed in your file" and not the letter itself alarms me.

I was wondering if this was normal, or if there is something wrong with my email account and I should bring this to their attention~

I didn't get aid package yet. How much is their estimated cost? did anyone get grant/scholarship from them?

Depending on whether you're IS or OOS, OOS is about 73K per year and IS is about 50K. You can double check the firm numbers on the financial aid website. Grant/Scholarship info won't be released until summertime, when the Office knows how much money they will have from NYS to distribute.

Yea it's not looking good. Is there a facebook page for Downstate 2015? - Nevermind

anyone recall if they said lectures were mandatory or not? I can imagine going to lecture getting old fast.

I should probably find off campus housing and drive, instead of living in dorm... that price is insane. Anyone else living off?

I'm living off-campus for sure.. looking around Park Slope area right now. I havent thought about driving... since taking the subway only takes 20 mins for about 4 stops from PS. I'm not sure how parking works around DS....

Hey anyone looking for an apartment around park slope? or even brooklyn heights? I most likely will have a car while at school, so that will help with commuting! PM me, 2-3 bedroom apartment sounds nice.

Downstate has a couple of parking lots but i know one of them is filled completely. Not sure about the other. It'd be cool to live with people in an apartment though. I'm from NYC so i'll probably go apartment hunting once school ends.

I'm sure that's fine. When they hit the reply button a drop down menu comes down and they're probably selecting reply without attachments.

Does the hold list move significantly or do I have a fool's hope at this point?

When I called the office back in March, they told me that they probably will not start taking people off of the on-hold list until the beginning of June. So don't lose hope yet!

I'm living off campus, but I found on-campus housing to be cheaper...maybe that's because we're looking at Park Slope? I'm looking at 1200-1500 per month off campus, which puts me at anywhere 14000-18000 per year. On campus, it's about 12k/year?

Are you sure you want a car? Sounds like a pain to drive in the city...just my two cents!

Xadorus: Don't bother with a car. I just got rear-ended today and am looking forward to not driving for sometime.

It's actually more convenient w/ a car. Although NYC's subway system is awesome, having a car gives you a second option =)

not worth worrying about parking and/or having to invest in a garage. leave your car at home.

True, for OOS kids a car is probably not worth it, but since I'm from the city, a car can be useful since I don't need to worry as much about parking.

Just got accepted off the "Hold for Spring" list!!! My first acceptance and I couldn't be happier. Can't wait for August!

+1 off hold for spring

my second, i now officially have a decision to make

I'm OOS but I'm shipping my car over. It's kinda hard to find an apt with a parking space available though.. Anyone know how much is a parking spot at DS for a semester or year?

I'm wondering about the parking situation here as well... I'd much rather have my car with me in Brooklyn if there's convenient parking that's also affordable

Either convenient or affordable, pick one. Actually probably even the non-convenient ones aren't affordable. Let me know if you guys find anything.
