my interview is the 20th so i got some questions for anyone who was already interviewed!Interviewed here today too.. looove this school!![]()
first, were you able to ask/look up who your interviewer was beforehand? (did you call/email?)
how long was the actual interview?
how many questions were asked?
could you list some of the questions?
also, what was the interview environment like?
thanks for your help!

There's a resource called "interview feedback" if you look at the top of the page. It's very useful.
Hey all,
Glad to hear interviews are starting up. I am a fourth year at Downstate. Just wanted to open myself up as a resource... if you have questions about the school before or after your interviews, feel free to ask on the board or PM me.
Good luck!

Yeh use interview feedback for the actual questions..
I found out who my interviewer was on the morning of my interview, so didn't look anyone up. My interview was around 35, 40 minutes long. Between five and ten questions were asked in total probably, and the interview environment was completely non-stressful. I was nervous going in, but as soon as I entered the room and met my interviewer, all the anxiety went away. It was just a regular conversation.
I added Downstate to my AMCAS on 9/8 and mailed off my secondary the same day. Now the only thing missing on my application checklist is my paper AMCAS application. Does anyone have any idea how often AMCAS mails batches of applications to Downstate? I would have thought that was all done electronically.
i heard that AMCAS actually does both.I added Downstate to my AMCAS on 9/8 and mailed off my secondary the same day. Some schools wait for the paper one (1-2 weeks), but others accept the electronic.

Yes, don't worry AMCAS will send the paper application.
hey guys, are interview invites/shecudling on the place where the checklist is?
Im not at my address where they sent the original letter saying i was complete, so i just wanted to see if theres an online way of seeing if i have an interview...or is it simply just an email?

No they just email you the invite with the date of the interview. There's no scheduling on the status check website.
So anyone here interviewed already or interviewing tomorrow? If the latter, I'll see you there!
I interviewed here on Thursday and it was reallyyy relaxed. I had an afternoon interview so I got there around 1230 and was done by 3pm. There was short tour during which we saw the lecture hall, the anatomy lab and a few other places. The interview itself was pretty laid back as well and my interviewer was super nice! Good luck to everyone interviewing this week!
Hey Vulcan, could you do 9/29 also?
LoL

How much is a cab ride from JFK to Downstate? According to google maps... public transportation seems to take a while and a bit complicated =/

It was a little under $40 from JFK to my hotel, which was ~10 min from Downstate

I live in NYC (Manhattan) right now and am really hoping to go to SUNY Downstate, so I've been browsing this thread from time to time.
This is the official NYC website that talks about cab fare:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/taxicab_rate.shtml
To Brooklyn, it says it should cost about $33-38 not including tip or tolls (I'm not sure if there are any tolls on the way to Brooklyn)
I hope this helps everyone!
i had a dream about going to my downstate interview.. it was horrible
they do, but you have to e-mail ms. levine about that

I know that some people have received notices (or seen on the status page) when Downstate wants additional information, but does the status change on the website for everyone from "Initial Review" to something else once your file has been reviewed? Just curious. Thanks
Hey guys. Right now, I'm planning my wedding which will take place this fall and I wanted to know if this is generally frowned upon by adcoms. I'm considering including that in my reponse to Downstate's secondary which asks what I'll be doing during my year off. Of course, I have other things to add but I wanted to know whether to include this.
Is not being able to miss work a valid excuse for rescheduling?
I agree. It reveals part of your "human" side (i.e. not just scores and GPAs) and shows that you have the maturity to be in a lifelong, committed relationship with someone. Congrats!First off, congrats on the wedding. As for writing that on the 2ndary, I don't see any problem with writing that down, go ahead and add it in there.
So how long does it usually take to hear back from this school???
I applied and got completed several weeks ago in mid august I'd like to say. Got my MCAT scores back from my retake a little over 2 weeks ago.
So I was wondering how long have most people been hearing back after if it is rejection or interview? or do they continually review you til later on?
I remember 2 years ago I was rejected by december in snail mail but I'd also applied later as I'd gotten everything in much later back then. So wanted to know if they are going to reject me if I should expect it earlier or if it will prob. after December.
Just wanted to know if anyone noticed any general trends on here in how much time between completion and rejections or interviews??
I was officially complete on 9/2 because Downstate was waiting on my Letters of Rec and didn't receive them until that day. I am still under "Initial Review" according to the website.
If your MCAT scores weren't received until a couple weeks ago, your file couldn't have been complete until then. If schools know that you have new MCAT scores coming in, they usually wait for those. I know some people have heard pretty fast since Downstate says that don't review apps in the order they are received, but schools won't review your application until your file is complete.

I would say that it is at least somewhat and probably highly dependent on your stats. I applied here late as an OOS applicant and received incredibly fast turnaround... under 3 weeks from adding the school to AMCAS (in September!) to receiving an interview invite. Considering other people submitted much earlier and are still waiting I can only guess it's because I have good numbers.

Is this true? They review applications in a random order? How can that be?
Is this true? They review applications in a random order? How can that be?
reviewing apps in a truly statistically random order? of course not
reviewing apps in an order which isn't strictly chronological and takes other factor(s) into account? seems pretty likely
I have a feeling they place the completed applications, as they come in, into a certain order where the individuals with the highest GPAs/MCATs get looked at first and then everyone else later. I'm sure they look at other parts of the application but I am guessing this is probably the order in which they review apps, I say this because I have been complete since 7/27, don't have stats that are too high, and have heard nothing since.
I will be in NY for another interview in early December so I sent SUNY Downstate an email letting them know. They sent me a nice email back ...
"Thank you for your email and your interest in SUNY Downstate. We are unable to grant your request for an interview that coincides with your visit to the New York metropolitan area. We understand your financial constraints, and realize that you may not be able to visit us at a later date. Following a formal review of your application by our Admissions Committee, you will be sent written notification of your application status. We wish you a safe trip to the New York metropolitan area."
Just in case others were thinking of sending in-the-area emails ... doesn't look like they are very receptive to them.

They also use paper applications so it isn't inconceivable that the office might misplace some applications.I have a feeling they place the completed applications, as they come in, into a certain order where the individuals with the highest GPAs/MCATs get looked at first and then everyone else later. Does anyone know if applying the MD/MPH program has any affect on your application or delay it???
to those who have interviewed...
do they allow you to store your luggage in the admissions office during the interview day? i'm goin' straight to JFK after.

Yes, you put it under the interview coordinator's desk.
