Just got an email saying I was accepted! I am 98% sure I am going here. OOS, but undergrad at Rutgers. Interviewed on 2/18. Don't give up hope!

Congrats! That is great news. I also interviewed on 2/18, and I was wondering if they were gonna accept any of us who interviewed so late. Glad that someone was, hopefully more are on the way. Is there anyone else who interviewed on 2/18 that has heard a decision yet?

I interviewed on 2/18. Found out a couple of days ago that I'm on the "alternate list". Not too thrilled about being "alternated", but trying to stay optimistic.

Based on my phone call to the admissions office, I gather that this is a ranked waitlist. I really want to know where I am ranked, but I can't get them to say. Apparently, they're not expecting major movement any time soon. Guess I'll call again in a couple of weeks. *Sigh*
 
i doubt there will be any WL movement until right before the may 15 deadline. we just gotta hold on til then.

After sending LOI i heard back a couple hours later from Ms. Kramer telling me to hang in there! They all seem so nice in the administration. I have never called and don't plan on calling. Im sure this is a hard process for them having to turn people away too. Good luck to everyone!
 
I just withdrew my acceptance so that's a seat opening up right there. Really enjoyed the interview and the school, but I just had to get out of Jersey haha

Hey all,
would any current RWJMS medical students be able to share what you love most about the school? I interviewed pretty late in the evening when most of the medical students were at home and not in class. How cohesive is the class and is there a very collaborative, non-competitive atmosphere? How is social life in piscataway given proximity to the Rutgers campus? Overall, do you find that what RWJ provides is a good deal for the money you pay in-state?

**Edit: How good is RWJ at placing it's students in away rotations that they really want to go to? I see they have a fantastic match list. I am very interested in general and orthopedic surgery.

I live about 30 minutes away from the school so I am heavily considering how convenient it would be to come here over other out of state alternatives. Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I am an M1 at RWJ, and I have to admit that I couldn't be happier with my decision to attend RWJ. I had other acceptances and waitlists, but it didn't take me long to realize that this was a wonderful place. Here are some of the factors that I researched and weighed my decision on:
- Tuition
- Cost of living/housing
- Location (New Brunswick, Philly, NYC, Hoboken)
- Global Health program + funding
- Research opportunities + funding (UMDNJ, Rutgers, Princeton, CINJ)
- Internal MD/PhD application - possible for those who are considering applying into the program in the first or second year
- Medical Spanish program
- Entirely student-run clinic for the uninsured in New Brunswick (Promise Clinic) - one of the only of its kind in the country
- High rate of consistent admission into prestigious summer fellowship programs
- Match List Match List Match List Match List Match List Match List is AMAZING =)

For those of you who think that RWJ is all Rutgers - so not true! This year, nearly 20% of our class is from Ivy League schools, and many from small prestigious liberal arts schools. It's honestly a great mix of students from so many academic background. I love my class 🙂

RWJ has a great reputation not just among other medical schools (it's perhaps one of the best state schools), but also among residency programs. I'm sure you all already saw RWJ's Match List - I think it most accurately speaks for the strength of academic preparation and the quality of students that come here. Don't be fooled by the "state school" title - it is by no means an easy ride here. Though a very stimulating and competitive environment, it is unbelievably friendly and encouraging. My classmates are very hard-working and determined, but they are also very fun, friendly, and readily help one another. I can't emphasize this enough, as it is probably why I am enjoying my first year so much. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions! Of course, I'm very biased and really don't have anything negative to say. 🙂

Hey all,

Post-match RWJ MSIV here. I just wanted to give you all a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel.

To be frank, I didn't know much about RWJ when I matriculated, and much of what I feel about the school is as a result of spending the past 5 years there. I can't say much about the pre-clinical curriculum because it has changed somewhat from when I was a MS I/II, but I'll give my two cents about the other stuff.

Firstly, the clinical training you get is phenomenal. We're all in this to become great clinicians, right? For my specialty of choice, I did 3 away rotations at arguably the best programs in the country, and I have to say that RWJ prepared me to shine, in many ways, more so than my colleagues from other well regarded institutions. The level of autonomy and patient ownership afforded to you during your clinical training years is beyond what occurs at many other schools. I think that this is where you really develop a sense of responsibility to the patient and rediscover your motivation for being in medicine, which may have been muddled after spending a few years in the classroom.

Secondly, the opportunities here are readily available. Whether its research, community outreach, getting second degree, etc, you are given free reign over the course of your education. For example, I took a year to do research under a very competitive fellowship. This was facilitated in part by the great track record that RWJ has with many of these fellowships, including the Doris Duke, Howard Hughes, Clinical Research Training Program, etc to name a few, and RWJ students are routinely awarded these grants year after year.

Lastly, the greatest measure of a school's success in training well-rounded, capable physicians who are highly sought after is the match list. To say the least, our success in the match speaks for itself. For a "humble" state school, students go to the best institutions across the country in the most competitive specialties.

Anyway, regardless of where you all go, as long as you are motivated, work hard, but also know how to let loose and play hard from time to time, you will all get great training.

Hopefully, the buzz will be good in the upcoming days.

As far as med school goes for me, I am thankful to be matriculating this summer (prefer not to say where until it's "all said and done"). Though, it would be extremely awesome if I could go to RWJMS simply because I really like everything this school has to offer and because I'm an NJ resident.

How did the application cycle go for you?

As well as it could have. I applied to 6 schools. I have two acceptances to schools I love for different reasons (can't chose) and my first choice (robert wood) is still a pretty good possibility. Im remaining optimistic. I interviewed the last day of the cycle so I wasn't expecting much. Its nice to still actually have a shot. :xf:

Anyone know if/when they give scholarships? I know I am probably not amazing enough but I recently got off the waitlist and got an offer at UPitt that is pretty hard to turn down...except for the fact that I like the RWJ area a lot better (it's home!). Anyways, I know I'm probably not even up for any of the treasured scholarships at RWJ, but I thought I'd poke around anyways. I know they mentioned they give 10 full tuition scholarships per year to good students when I was interviewing...but I have heard nothing since then. Anyone know how to find out if you're up for it or if you can apply?

You recently got off Robert wood's waitlist? If so, do you mind sharing when? In response to your questions i think most schools dont have application processes for their scholarships.

I got a phone call earlier this week...im assuming if you dont receive a phone call in the next couple days, they wouldnt be offering a scholarship... but you could always email or call the admissions office. theres a lady, meryle kramer, whos really nice and should be able to help you out with your questions

thanks jyoudan, I'll try contacting her..hopefully they at least look at my financial aid again..are you definitely headed to rwj now then? I imagine that would tip the scales for you haha 🙂..congrats

Thats awesome that you got a scholarship from UPITT after getting off the waitlist. I guess anything is possible still. I got a scholarship from another school that makes attending it cheaper than robert wood. I figured at this point i can only hope to get off the robert wood high priority list. It would be AMAZING if i got off then got a scholarship. Extremely unlikely but amazing. Good luck choosing where you go.

lol sorry I was unclear again! it's not a scholarship but really is better finaid 🙁..ps hang in there wait lists are moving!

almost for certain going here...the only exception is the top 10 school im waitlisted at. im tempted to just withdraw my app from that school so i wont have to decide if they do accept me
 
Not expecting too much movement from here. FB group already has almost the amount of people that i thought they are taking in the class (~120). Most places are at like 50% right now.

The FB group is full of upper class folk trying to sell stuff and looking for roomates.

The high priority list letter sounded optimistic and i have kept in contact with Ms. Kramer and she sounds optimistic. So I am keeping positive. 🙂

Got yet another email this week from RWJMS. It said that based on the first email sent to HP people asking them to withdraw if no longer interested, the list has become smaller. It asked requested I let them know if I am still interested. So my thoughts are coming true.. lets hope they come true all the way to an acceptance. Are you still banking on robert wood?

i definitely recommend being proactive in letting rwj know that you are still interested, its your #1 etc. If you are willing to go there regardless of fin aid...then maybe a LOI is in order?

3.7, 32....I figure it was the publications and ec's that helped out most. so its not just the high mcat club getting money 😀

I got a 40,000 grand scholarship from another school recently (10,000/yr if i keep a B or above). Brings its tuition and fees to a little less that RWJ for 4 years. But my heart is still with Robert wood. I was 100% sure I would want to go there if granted acceptance but with this now I'm only like 95% sure.

Its good to know you have something to fall back on. The process of waiting is even more agonizing without it.

Sent LOI in march and an update letter 2 weeks ago. Sent a response to the email asking if I am still interested today. I don't think i can keep in touch and show interest more lol.

Congrats on your scholarship. Maybe ill see you on the other side 🙂

Does anyone know when we find out about any need based aid? Or have they already distributed that.
 
anyone know how much RWJ should cost next year including tuition and any additional fees (insurance and all that jazz)

The official numbers will come in once New Jersey establishes the budget for the next fiscal year ( which starts July 1st).
