anyone that interviewed have any comments on how the interviews are? =)

Sorry bro. EDP just makes so much sense, if you know your best chance is Wayne State! But keep the hopes high & hopefully I can buy you a beer Aug 2011!

Like most people, mine was very laid back. We really just sat down and had a conversation. She didn't ask any ethical questions (or even any difficult questions really). She basically wanted to get to know me and my personality. Seriously, don't be nervous. Just know your AMCAS and secondary well and be yourself!

You're right about it making more sense. And I'll let you know if you'll be buying me a beer in...10 DAYS!!

Ok high5, the last part about being yourself sounded really cheesy and cliche when I just read it again. But I really think they just want to make sure you are able to handle the social side of being a physician. Clearly you can handle it academically if you've made it to this point, but they need to make sure you won't scare away the patients (or at the very least, you can maintain a conversation)! 😀 Anyway, that's just my take...obviously I'm not on the adcom or anything...

lol, nah the part about being myself was beautiful.

EDP is only good if you've got really good stats. I think that if you do EDP you can't apply regular admission until you have a decision from the school you applied to. It seems like such a riskk...

God, 10 days.. I'm starting to get nervous..

Anyone know what % of OOS interviewees are offered acceptance? Waiting until October 20th is brutal! I WANT THIS ACCEPTANCE!

If you read the application thread from 2010, there is someone who calculated chances based on admission data from 2008.

It turns out that there is approximately a 78% chance you will get accepted if you got an interview (1). That is true for IS and OOS. These numbers seem crazy, but the calculations were legit.

You cannot do that for statistics listed on wayne's website. These are statistics for matriculants not people accepted.

Many people get accepted to Wayne, but choose to go to another school; Some because they are OOS and the tuition is according to AAMC is the forth highest at ~61K (2), and others are IS who would like to leave the state of Michigan for whatever reason.

Good luck.

I am pretty sure buying a bear is illegal (1). Haven't you heard of the monkey who messed up a woman's face? It was all over the news at one point (2).

Haha, nice Pr0xy. Ok, I guess he can just buy me a beer instead of a bear. Thanks for crushing my dreams of owning my very own bear. PS: I feel like we're in a spelling bee!

What I find interesting is according to the first article, it is illegal to own a chimp in Connecticut. BUT, the woman in the second article owned one and the police were well aware of it (since it had escaped in 2003). Weird...

wow... I am going to be surrounded by nerds 🙄 (just messing... don't get all worked up about it)
need some non-nerdy party animals in my class... please.

if you click on the law citation for the state of Connecticut, it says that you could earn a permit to have a primate in your home before 2003, but that primate must not weigh more than 50 pound when it's an adult. According to the CNN article, that monkey was in the hundreds of pounds. I guess they did not care too much to enforce that law, or maybe they were too freaked out by the chimp that no one really dared to give the owner a ticket. Hehe.

To above poster. Congratulations in interview invite!

Congratulations on your interview invite fruitpunchjoys!

Does anyone know how Wayne State evaluates their secondary applications?
Do they evaluate them in the order they received them, or do they evaluate the more competitive applications first? I am just wondering because I was complete on 8/26, and have not heard back yet.

I don't think you need to, those of us waiting for a decision have already been counting down the days haha. I hope this by this time next week I will be celebrating an acceptance!!

Does Wayne State have a systems based curriculum where we learn everything that pertains to the system regarding biochem, pharm, physio, etc all at once and then move on the next system?

Also are Wayne State's clinical rotations at a bunch of different hospitals in Detroit?

Thanks for all the help...good luck to everyone that interviewed and is interviewing -- I hope we all get in!

Hey high5, the first year is set-up in blocks where you take certain courses concurrently (though they don't all start on the exact same date and last the same amount of time). In addition to a clinical medicine course through both the first and second years, the blocks are:

Year 1
Block 1: gross anatomy, histology, embryology
Block 2: biochem and physiology
Block 3: neuro, genetics, and nutrition

Year 2
Block 1: microbio, immuno, and psychiatry
Block 2: pathobiology and pharmacology
Block 3: systemic pathophysiology (renal, cardio, respiratory, gi, etc...)

I'm pretty sure the clinicals are at all different hospitals in the area, but most are at the DMC. The Detroit Medical Center (DMC) includes several hospitals (like Detroit Receiving, Children's Hospital, Karmanos Cancer Center, Harper-Hutzel), but I think you can/do go to other hospitals in the metro (Beaumont, Oakwood, Henry Ford, St. Johns, etc...) so you won't always be in the D.

I'm actually a grad student at the SOM right now, and this is the info I've gotten over time from some of my med student friends. Let me know if you want more details and I can ask them for you!

For more info, you can also look up the facebook class of 2014 site. they have cool info there. Besides its good to network with our seniors (some of them are very cute 😉 )

Wow, this is why you do not take stuff on the interwebz seriously. I also have the US News subscriptions and that's not what the page says for OOS....

Hey Ivy, would you mind posting the info that your book has for those OOSers who are curious? Thanks!

Shnitz, I don't think it's time to give up hope. You can call the school if you are really worried about it. But they do interview a lot of people so they might just be really busy. Either way, good luck and I hope you find out soon!

WSU are really good when it comes to their recruitment videos. This one is no exception. I just hate the music at the beginning and in the background because I hear it a million time on the radio while driving to WSU or when watching TV.
The Richard Mazurek building is an incredible building, and I have been to the clinical skills center and played with that laproscopic training device thingy at 4:16 in the video. I moved the triangles from one side to another and back in 4 minutes and I felt so proud of myself only to be told by the medical student overlooking me that a fully trained surgeon can do it in 40 seconds lol.

Rotating in third year you go to a single hospital site. Ford takes 60+ students and the DMC still takes the most of all the sites. Some people are at Oakwood, St. John, Beaumont, the VA, or St. Joe's in Ann Arbor. There is a lottery for the different sites and you rank them. For locations like the VA and a couple others you rotate at other places for OBGYN. For Peds, the hospital systems that don't have inpatient peds to to Children's Hospital.

Don't be nervous, Wayne's interview is not going to be anywhere near stressful if my "sources" are correct lol. I'll be there Wednesday too but I'm touring Thursday since I have an exam Wednesday at 1pm and even though it's basically in the same building, I don't want to miss it if the tour isn't done by then lol. Good luck everyone!!! 🙂

Oh I'm definitely getting anxious! Either way, I'll be at the bar Wednesday evening...but hopefully to celebrate!!! :xf:

Ughh.. I have an exam the day after.. BUT my gf turns 21 Thursday and I have nothing going on Friday so you'll know where to find me! I just hope it's me celebrating, and not sorrowing...

We're talking about acceptances not interviews 🙂. Wayne State's first round of decisions come out on Wednesday for everyone (non EDP) who has interviewed before this week 🙂.

Ohhhh gotcha! I know some other people on here were talking about interviewing on Wednesday so I just assumed lol. Well good luck still! I wish I could find out on Wednesday because I have my eye on a pretty sweet apartment haha...

Man, I'm not sure if I could look until after the exam. Of course, if I didn't look I'd just be thinking about it constantly. Wow, I don't envy you! 😱

Good luck on Wednesday sedaniel! And your sources are right about the interviews. They are really laid back! And just out of curiosity...is your test in Molecular Biology and Genetics??

Dude I know how you feel, I'm in the same situation except the tests are the day of, according to last years thread they notify you really early.

Haha yep, are you in the class too?

Haha, no but I'm in the class before (micro) and I have friends in your class that told me the test was on Wednesday. Don't worry, it was a good guess, I'm not a creepy stalker... 😀

Hey there

I'm working on my Wayne state secondary and I had a question about the second prompt:

It is certain that in the next ten years there will be radical changes in the health care delivery system as we know it today. How do you perceive yourself functioning in this evolving health care environment?

When they are asking this question do they mean the evolution of medicine and the changing techniques? Or do they mean the current changes in health policy like the health care reform bill?

Or both?? Not sure how to approach this question but in the first 250 words I focused mainly on changes in technique/research/ext ext and then I changed my focus to administrative/policy for the last 250 words...

Any input would be much appreciated.

i think the essay questinon is asking about the current changes in health policy like the health care reform bill as you mentioned. medicine is always evolving so i don't think it's necessary asking about progress in medicine. but i might be wrong.

i do like your strategy where you're answering the essay prompt half and half (first part about changes in technique/research and second part about administrative/policy) 👍

best thing to do is to state in the beginning of the essay what the prompt means to you.

When they are asking this question do they mean the evolution of medicine and the changing techniques? Or do they mean the current changes in health policy like the health care reform bill?

Neither are incorrect, so you could certainly choose one, the other, or both and defend it well. I'm in the same process you are, so I don't want to pretend to know anything magical, but it seems to me that medical schools are very interested in seeing that you 1) have the maturity to deal with the ever-changing field of medicine, and 2) have the resolve to stick with it even when it changes. Good luck. 👍

Lol I took micro last year, that was a good class, except for the fact that Dr. Berk doesn't understand he can't throw a slide up on that old school projector and think students can write everything down from it in 2 seconds haha...
