2010 Waitlist Blues?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I emailed my #2 choice this morning and asking if there has been any movements with my status of being an alternate and told the admission coordinator that I am aware it has only been a week....he emailed me back and informed me that one person declined the offer and that I am on top of the list so he made an offer of acceptance!!!!!

So excited! I'm still waitlisted on my first choice but this is great news!!!

Question: How exactly do post-interview notifications work??? Is everyone waitlisted unless the position has already been accepted? Or does 1 person receive the offer, 4 more get waitlisted, and 2 ppl are outright rejected? ???

According to those Council on... etc. etc. guidelines, a school should NOT keep all those who have not been offered an offer on the waitlist. If it is confident an applicant will not get an offer, it should notify them immediately. This is similar to applicants letting an offer go if they are confident they won't be attending that school. But of course, how strictly these rules are adhered to we'll never know. A little different situation but I remember for undergrad, if you applied ED or EA somewhere, very few schools outright rejected you.

Good luck to everyone!!😉

Congrats!

So my POI at my top choice program, where I am first alternate for two possible spots, said today that one of the applicants who is ahead of me is waiting to decide until after an interview on the 15th, and she hasn't heard anything from the second applicant. However, she advised me to hold on a little longer without accepting my other offer (she knows her program is my top choice). Just wanted to vent: what programs have interviews on the 15th? Isn't that the deadline to extend offers?? I'm dying to get into this program and I hate making the other school wait around. Ahh, the bottleneck of clinical psych admissions. One more interview this weekend and then a week vaca in phoenix/las vegas--hopefully I can get my mind off of things for a little while and just relax 🙂

Is the interview 3/15? The actual deadline to extend offers is 4/1 and applicants are supposed to make final decisions 4/15. :xf:

argh, my own waitlist blues today. Found out the "first round draft pick" at one of my schools accepted the spot in my POI's lab, so I am off the waitlist but not in the way I had hoped. Rejected!

And now it all comes down to one waitlist, at one school. I sincerely hope someone who has an offer for my lab will turn it down or poof! hamster dreams up in smoke (for now) and I gotta start figuring out a way to make next year's apps happen.

Waitlist aphorism of the day: A dream delayed is not a dream denied.

I had one waitlist at one school and it worked out, so don't give up hope! Best of luck 😀

Hello all...I decided to join the ranks of this thread because I was informed today that I am the first alternate for a position at a program I LOVE. Kind of bummed because there was only one position open in the lab...so my chances are down to this one person accepting or declining the offer. Sigh.

I like all the positive vibes going on in here though! I hope everyone gets good news soon 🙂

Mind saying where that is? Congrats!! It's better than a rejection. 🙂

That's great! It sounds like you got some pretty solid programs lined up. I know the waiting it just torture.

thanks psyched 🙂 I'm just down to Drexel and John Jay, wait listed at Drexel and still haven't heard anything from JJ (obviously or I would have told you haha)

ugh good luck to everyone!

EXACT same reason I joined too :-D I am also the first alternate for my top-choice program. It's perfect for me and I reeeallllly want to go. If they offered, I'd say yes in a heartbeat. Sighhhhh

Sorry, this was the actual quote I wanted to quote 😛

Ugh so frustrating isn't it? I guess we just have to hope the people who have been given offers don't like the programs as much as we do!

Mind saying where you're waiting on?

How often do you think one can check in about their alternate status... I have been checking in once every two weeks to 10 days... Also, if one is to win the lottery and donate a building to your program of choice and they happen to have a spot open up, do you think that would be unethical 😉 (the last tid bit is a joke)

It's only been 10 days but I'm going a bit stir crazy. (Must not bug school, must not bug school,....)

:d

I'm past stir crazy. I feel like someone pushed the pause button. 😱 (must not refresh page every second...)

Haha I know what you mean- I want to hear....but I don't want to hear.... because I'm terrified the next communication I get will be 'the first candidate has accepted the offer'... ah nerves :xf:

Temple, Temple wherefore art thou Temple............... 😉

Actually at this point, I've decided that I did not get into grad school this year and assume rejection. I have begun to work out a plan for next year's apps and also to distract myself with non grad school related life. I guess I am just too much of a pessimist. this way if I do get in, it will be a wonderful surprise.

mope.

Don't assume rejection! I suspect a lot of waitlist movement will happen in mid to late March and April as applicants get a full picture of their options.

I'm pulling for you big time! 🙂🙂🙂

I understand not wanting to get your hopes up--only to then have them dashed later on. BUT, I just don't think it is time to throw in the towel.

After reading your posts for months, I think many of us are now invested in your PhD dream, and I for one refuse to think that you won't get into Temple this year. So, I (and I am sure many others) will be optimistic for you. : )

I think we ALL hope that Hamsterpants does the HappyHamsterDance SOON!

I certainly do!

Yayyyy a place just for waiting! I am waitlisted at my top choice and this is ultra anxiety provoking. Trying to sleep knowing your future is completely up in the air is awesome. 🙂

Ah I'm in the same situation as many of you! I am first alternate at my top choice (dream program). So it's down to only two options now... my dream school, or... nothing. Ahhh the pressure....

Best wishes to you all! I hope you all attain the outcomes you desire and can revel in the glow!!!

It's so much worse when it's in the hands of a stranger (the first choice applicant)!

ah man, youse guys are great support.

I haven't totally thrown in the towel but I have (unbelievably) found good things about not getting in. I have also discovered that I am pretty good at waiting but I am horrible at waiting but not having anything to do that I feel moves me forward. So thinking about next year fills that void.

ps: the lab I used to volunteer for just contacted me, they need me and this time they can pay me! Of course, my FT job comes first but I REALLY need the cash (need to pay back my brother money he loaned me for interviews) even if it is mostly data entry and a small bit of analysis.

we're still rooting for you, hampsterpants...i'm starting to get like the other people on here; i get excited when i see you as the last poster on the acceptance thread, and a little nervous when i see you as the last poster on here, lol.

got my fingers crossed for you :xf:

I knowwww! They are lucky that the schools don't give out names and addresses, Clinical applicants are vicious!

So what do you guys think of this one? I interviewed with two professors at one school and, after bursting at the seams, broke down and contacted them just as their deadline for contacting interviewees expired. Strangely, I got a really sweet, what seemed like a rejection letter from one, who said it was "unlikely we'll be able to offer you a spot." The other said that I was still a "viable candidate and one of our alternates." They emailed me within 20 minutes of each other.
You think one of the professors was being realistic, while the other was trying not to squash my dreams? I'd like to say the one who rejected me was just speaking for her lab and not the entire program, but she said it was unlikely "WE" will be able to offer you a spot. Ugh, is this what I'm reduced to? Reading so deeply into every word?
Looks like I've found good company though. Good luck guys!

i know just how you feel. i have been caught between faculty and DCTs and it is so frustrating not to get a straight answer. i think that as long as one faculty member is telling you that it's still possible than you should keep your hopes up. if you are still on that POI's list then hope is not lost. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks! I guess we'll see...it's my top choice, so I'm keeping a fragment of hope alive in my mind!

You know I'm rooting for you! 😉 Let's all keep hope alive...because up until April 15th (and according to some posts even after) there is STILL a chance. I am consoling myself with that fact. 🙂

Thanks buddy...and it seems like you have a very good chance. You're wanted so badly you're occupying the first waitlist position for two professors...quite a nice feeling I bet 😉

Waitlist aphorism of the day: A dream delayed is not a dream denied.

You made made me smile hamsterpants. I have been outright rejected from two schools and I have yet to hear anything except we are still evaluating from one school. This process is soo frustrating but your quote really made me feel better. If not this year I just gather myself back up, strengthen my resume with some research etc. and reapply. All is not lost.

I know, I want to hunt that person down and force him/her to decide, damnit! Must remember to breathe, must remember to breathe.

I'm with hampsterpants though, I'm getting pretty discouraged. My other school made decisions Fri and began calling ppl this morning, still no word, but I didn't get the "I did well" vibe there at all, which I DID get at my waitlist school.

In better news, I already have the $7,300 from wrecking my car on the way to interviews last weekend!

Question: If they have until April 1 to make offers and we have until April 15 to accept, does this mean that after April 1, waitlist ppl will not receive offers of admission???

Hi all, I know that Suffolk emailed their acceptances on Fri, March 5. Has anyone received notice of a waitlist? I have been checking these threads but only read about acceptances. I want to contact the program because the unknown is killing me, but is it too soon?

... I guess that leads to my next question - when is it appropriate to contact a program about your status if you havent heard from them? do you contact your POI or the program admin? is there preference for calling/email?

Best of luck to everyone. Trying to stay positive 😳

No, it doesnt! I have a friend/colleague that was accepted on April 13th from the waitlist at the only program she interviewed at! She is now extremely happy in her current program as well. Hopefully gives you guys a boost with another success story 🙂

Ok, so now I'm waitlisted to my first and second choices

keep the faith guys! i got in to my first choice after convincing myself i was on the waitlist and there was no hope of getting off. there is hope!!!!
