This is all very discouraging to hear. Especially because I'm interviewing tomorrow..

You still are interviewing at a great school 👍 it's just that you may have to wait until after May 15 for an acceptance. But anyway, we're only speculating. We're not 100% sure we know what's going on with admissions this year. Maybe they have been accepting people who aren't on SDN/mdapps. Who knows?

You'll get paperwork in the mail about it. It'll probably be the first two weeks of August. It's really, really informal, and the grades don't count for anything.

I want to know too...they told me "As soon as the scholarship committee makes a decision, students are notified." I'm assuming they have to notify us before May 15th

Did anyone else get the email from Einstein today which ended with " You were asked to stay in contact with and email xxx regarding their status, and informed that if your transcripts did not arrive by the deadline, your place in the class will be forfeited on that date. We certainly don't want that to happen!"

I don't know if it's just me but I find the tone of this email kinda condescending especially when it's a reminder for something due in July.

Got the same email today, but I had emailed with Joan last month to confirm my transcripts..

I think yield is the likely culprit. Last years numbers 467 accepted, 183 enrolled. Which is less than a 50% yield. They want to improve their yield for sure, yield is also used when calculating ranking (at least to some extent), I believe.

Yield actually isn't used in the US News ranking. Acceptance rate, which you could say is a proxy for yield, is worth only 1% for the research ranking and 0.75% for the primary care ranking. So, improving yield for ranking purposes wouldn't actually do anything.

Einstein has a comparable, if not better yield, than nearby NYC schools (numbers via US News):

Columbia: 169/304 = 55.6%
Einstein: 183/443 = 41.3%
NYU: 160/417 = 38.4%
Mount Sinai: 140/376 = 37.2%
Cornell: 101/307 = 32.9%

If I had to guess, the change in admission procedures this year could be to a desire to boost average MCAT and GPA scores, which also affects ranking...

Well I have a higher MCAT and GPA than two of my friends that have been accepted here, however they applied much earlier. My numbers are definitely above average for Einstein, but I didn't interview until January. Who knows how they are doing things this year.

Yes indeed. Who knows. Although I wouldn't use individual MCAT and GPAs as a benchmark - this process is such a crapshoot - you have people with 30/3.5 getting into places where a 36/4.0 person doesn't get an interview. As you pointed out, it's not just about the numbers (with when you apply being one variable). With such a skewed ratio of spots to applicants, there are bound to be oddities within the overall scope of things. Regardless, good luck.

That is my guess. I hear Havard and other schools are putting off deadline??

I have friends that still haven't made the decision. My guess is that the admissions committee wants to see how many spots they are going to need to fill in total. That way when they go to the waitlist they can fill a majority of the spots at one meeting versus, accepting one candidate at a time as spots open before the may 15th deadline, seems like more of a logistical thing.

After sending in an update another person at admissions told me sometime in June. I am guessing the person on the phone did not want me to call back any time soon. 🙄

My guess would be that there's a lot of shifting around that takes place after the May 15 deadline. One student being accepted off of a waitlist at a school that they prefer to the one they gave their May 15 "yes" to sets off a chain reaction, opening up a new spot at the school they withdraw from which is filled by another student who may give up the spot at their original school, and so on. Even though this shifting will continue to some extent until people start their first day of class, I'd assume the biggest surge of activity happens soon after the May 15 deadline. As a result, it probably takes a few weeks post-deadline for a school to get a clear idea of how many spaces they're likely to have open. If what Hotshy is guessing about looking at the waitlist in batches instead of on a rolling basis is right, this might explain why they wait a few weeks before they start accepting off of the waitlist.

For the record, the waitlist started moving in June last year, IIRC. They could be doing something different this year, or they could just be saying July to give a conservative overestimate.

Just received notification that I'm on the alternate list for this scholarship. They review again at the end of May.

Of course, that's of no use to me since May 15 is just around the corner. I will probably withdraw my acceptance. Good luck to the rest of you.

I received a service and research scholarship today! It asks that I let them know my intentions by May 10th. If I accept the scholarship, does this mean I am unable to accept a place off the wait lists of my dream schools?

Withdrew acceptance today... Really wish I could have gone here, but the finances just weren't there... The saddest day of this application cycle so far (but very grateful to be attending med school).

Just called them...for those on high-priority they said this was a pretty good situation to be in. In addition, after May 15th they'll have a better idea and then its rolling admissions so it doesn't appear that their sending them out in batches but rather as one spot opens they'll send out an email to someone on the HPL. So...I guess end of May the process should be beginning!

Hey, how much did you receive from them, if you don't mind me asking? The fin aid people said they do give out some need-based scholarships, and my general sense from other people I talked to was that einstein is usually one of the more generous schools.

I spoke to someone on the admissions committee who said a in survey of accepted applicants who turned down Einstein, the number one reason was location. I guess people just prefer Manhattan.

Does anyone know if there is any difference between the 1-bedroom apt and the 2-bedroom apt? Are the rooms bigger in one in comparison to the other? Are the 2-bedroom all in the same tower, or are they all spread out in the 3 towers. Which ones are on the lower floor?

Also, on the housing form, it said that if an apartment is empty (no other roommate), the one individual has to pay rent for the whole apartment. I am leaning towards the 2-bedroom, but it would suck if I have no roommate and have to pay for it myself. Does that actually happen to anyone?

The 2-bedroom (which is actually converted to 3) is a bit cheaper ($50/month) than the 1-bedroom (which is actually converted to 2). The 3 bedroom has one large bedroom and two medium rooms, while the 2's rooms are both intermediate in size between the 3-large and the 3-small. I don't know of any people who have two empty rooms. The apartment buildings are identical, and each floor is identical (aka contains all types). Generally, the Orthodox Jews are assigned the lower floors to avoid long walkups on the Sabbath.
