Hey ladies and gents,

I a med student here @ drexel and had been in your shoes a couple of years ago. Dont know if this has been previously discussed on this thread but when I was applying to the university, the overriding belief on drexel online status was that:

a final decision has been made = either acceptance or rejection

a decision has been made = waitlisting

Hope those who have been previously accepted or waitlisted to confirm if this is still the case. Good luck y'all!!

Lastly, be patient! The adcom works very hard to thoroughly review each applicant and needless to say, it takes time to get to your application as fast as you might want!!!
Has "A decision has been made..." ever been an acceptance, or just waitlisted?

Hey, does anybody know whether the Drexel deposit is refundable? On the letter, it says it will go towards your tuition and is non-refundable. But if I ultimately have to decline the acceptance in May, is the deposit refunded then?

The $100 tuition deposit is "no longer refundable" as indicated in the letter. I have confirmed that this means that even if you withdraw prior to May 15th you will not be issued a refund (which goes against the policy of many other schools and the AAMC recommendation) .... Money Grubbers😡

In the grand scheme of things, losing $100 doesn't seem that bad when you factor in how much you have spent for the primary application, secondary application, travel expenses for interviews, etc. Plus, if I am accepted at one school and get into another school that I feel is a better fit, then I will gladly lose $100 to make that happen. $100 is not much when you think you will be paying a minimum of $100,000 over the next four years.

No one is complaining about losing $100. Considering Drexel's terrible financial aid, not refunding the deposit just rubs people the wrong way.

I sincerely hope that they use all these non-refundable deposits towards hiring more people. I think they are under-staffed taking into account the number of applications they receive.

this + this = canceling my cheque... boo Drexel.

I liked it well enough on interview day, but I have an accept at one of my top choice schools right now, and I was hoping that maybe Drexel would give me a sweet scholarship or something... barring that, and considering this somewhat sheisty deposit policy, I'm kind of turned off. I can't afford to throw away $100, I really can't.

i agree with your decision... i would do the same if i were in your situation..

i guess this non-refundable does deter applicants from holding multiple acceptances (especially at a school that is not your 1st choice)

I had to pay Nova Southeastern $1,250 (non-refundable). I still haven't been accepted MD (yet) so I had no choice 🙁 There's no way in hell I'm reapplying next year so in the long run, it's money I had to spend.

Wow! That is rough. So basically, you're hoping to NOT get an md acceptance lol!

bahah, no no, I'm still counting on Drexel 😀, it's just 1,250 to secure my future career, one way or another.

the interesting thing is that another friend of mine got into another DO school and had to pay something like $1,500 bucks. It's got to be an osteopathic thing..

+1 on the $1500. I did that as well for LECOM. The hard part is that it is 20k/year cheaper than Drexel so I face a fiscal predicament should I get accepted into Drexel...do I add hundreds of thousands more to my debt to have the md next to my name?

Sorry to hear about the deposit thing. At least (as has already been mentioned) it could be much, much worse (don't the DO schools only give you like 7 days to respond as well?)

You'll see all along your medical training that there are so many people applying for so few spots that the schools/residencies/etc can really do anything they want. Sure, they've made the $100 deposit nonrefundable now, but if you aren't willing to pay it there are 500 others who would write the check in a heartbeat. So if you're interested in the school you'll do it.

I'm sure other places will start turning the same way in the near future. For residency interviews, if you enter more competitive fields many of the programs won't even pay for your parking for the interview day. People who are interviewing for less competitive residencies are getting free hotels, parking, meals, gifts, etc.

Congrats to everyone in the thread that has heard good news, though! And to those still waiting...good luck! :luck:

No I get it, they don't want 100 people calling them with bad news on may 14th. Still, it just seems a little extreme, I mean, the deposit is for tuition, so if I don't end up buying tuition from them, what is their justification for keeping the deposit right? Either way, I'm withdrawing today - best of luck dudes!

Their justification is that it just worked - you withdrew your acceptance very early in the season because you aren't interested .

Congrats though on your many offers!

No it definitely did work - I just think it's a shame that I didn't get to find out what the financial aid offer would have been (could have easily changed my mind). I liked Drexel a lot, but the non-refundable thing really just rubbed me the wrong way you know? I don't have "walking-around money" to just toss away.

In terms of the deposit, this school is blatantly ignoring the AAMC recommendation, nuff said.

Received an II on Jan 12, Interview scheduled for late Feb.

I've noticed that people that have interviewed mentioned something about an essay, can someone please elaborate on this? Also, is there any way of finding out whom you'll be interviewing with, so I can do some background research on the interviewer? My first II... so I'm freaking out!! Thanks

It's an essay that requires common sense, you'll do fine.

The interview is about you, not your interviewer, I never understood people who cared about the background of the interviewer as it never comes up.

Thnak you guys for all the help!!!! I'm eexcited!!! :soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

In regards to the interviewer, I figured knowing something about the interviewer would be beneficial.....but mostly just me being nervous, 'tis all.

Hey yawl,

When you get that acceptance packet, come by the facebook group (which I created because it looks like the former one no longer exists, amirite?).
Let's band together before the going gets tough! 😎
And let us all find housing..... :corny:

Oh right, I saw all that stuff about essays again--they are the best application essays you can ask for, because they are ethics questions. The Wash U website will certainly overprepare you (Drexel's prompts are a lot less confusing to decide)! http://depts.washington.edu/bioethx/topics/index.html

Godspeed; hope to see you in school!!! :highfive:

When I scheduled my interview last week, there were spots open Feb 26, 27, and 28, and basically all of March, so I'd say there are definitely interview spots left to give.

Thats actually University of Washington's bioethics page, not Wash U. University of Washington = Seattle, Wash U = St. Louis. Very different places.

Hey guys, I haven't received a decision yet but I was wondering if a current medical student could tell me about living off-campus and driving to school. Does Drexel offer student parking? (if so, how much is it and where is it?) Thanks!

lol I'm glad this is your first post. 6 months of lurking and this is the post that causes you to rise from the dead?

Well everyone lives off campus because there is no on campus housing. The choice is yours; you can live around the preclinical building in East Falls and walk to the school - there are many apartment complexes and single homes to rent. You can live nearby in Manayunk (15 minute drive), Roxborough (10 min drive), City Line Ave (20 min drive), Center City (25-30 minute free Drexel shuttle ride), or even as far as New Jersey (30-45 min drive). The choice is yours.

As far as parking goes, there are two options. You can purchase daily parking (the last price that I remember was ~$550/year but I could be wrong), or you can sign up for nights/weekends (4pm-7am M-F or anytime Sat/Sun) for free. You really don't have to sign up for daily parking as there is a lot of street parking for free (as long as you don't mind parking a few blocks away and walking). The parking lot surrounds the preclinical building.

For years three and four it's more of a free-for-all as your hospital may be far away so it matters even less where you live.

Congrats!

... if it snows (badly) then it is very difficult to find street parking.. they take quite some time to clean the streets around there.. those days you can park in the visitor parking lot and pay $ 5 / day rather than sign up for the entire year.. occasionally they leave the parking gate open as well 🙂 🙂

... also the security offers a car ride upto several blocks from campus.. so you dont have to walk in the night or when weather is bad...

... also you got to be careful which street you park.. have heard few people complain about scratches etc. etc.

As far as the shuttle goes for those living in Center City, how reliable is it? Does it come consistently? Does it come on time? etc etc

Edit: I had a horrible experience with the shuttles on my interview day (several of us applicants had to bum a ride off a student to get to our interview location in time because the shuttle never came)

Well I've never had to use the shuttle every single day but the times I do need it it was pretty reliable. Sorry to hear about your experience.

Here is the schedule:

Happened to notice the date that this became effective. I interviewed Oct 3rd and we were informed it was the first day of the new shuttle schedule that only had the shuttle coming once every hour. I guess that was short lived

You should have heard the faculty complain about the shuttle schedule in the beginning of October. They were enraged at the new schedule changes and petitioned to get the buses running more frequently. I guess it worked. 😛

hey everyone. I just cancelled my interview for 1/25. For those who want to interview, like, next week, my spot is open. Otherwise, I hope it goes to someone waiting to hear from Drexel for an II.

I just checked the calendar and there are plenty of spots in March and it seems like they haven't even started booking for April yet. So, don't give up hope.

Yeah at first they had the first shuttle of the day leaving Queen Lane at 6am. This made things impossible for the students on surgery because you need to be there by 530 at the latest.

Enough people complained and things got changed pretty quickly.

I have had this status for some time now.

Thank you for your application. Your file has been reviewed and will be re-evaluated later in the season for a final decision.

I've had "Your file is complete and will be reviewed" since 11/29.

does anyone know if there is a second look day for accepted students?

does anyone know if there is a second look day for accepted students?

There is. We had one in early April, and there may have been a later one too, not sure. Emails didn't come out until a couple weeks before. Also, if you're interested in PIL, there are shadowing days in the spring too, I think they start in Feb.

Finally got sent to the admissions committee today...woo!

Interviewed 12/7, with a member 12/9, adcom 1/20

Lucky you! I interviewed on 11/17 and I'm still with a member. It's been 9 weeks 🙁

yea is this a bad sign? my status still says "if you have appeared for your interview, your file will be progressing though the committee."
