Hey SDNers,

I've been somewhat of a silent follower on this thread, but decided it was time to come out and share some good news with you all.

I too have been blessed with an Interview Invite! 🙂 The stories from Insanelyposh and others have been so encouraging, and so by posting this, I hope it will pass on some hope to others.

My prayers are with all those who are waiting for II, preparing for interviews and awaiting decisions / acceptances.

Hi Guys,

I only posted on here once before but I've been reading people's comments for months. I was hesitant because I didn't get my interview until Feb 28th (the day right before my birthday lol).

So I had my interview with Dr. Callender, a very intimidating yet considerate man, and I think it went really well. He critiqued me as we talked and I could see all the things he was writing down about me, talk about awkward. He also cut me off a number of times mid-sentence and after a few times I made a funny face to which he responded, I'm cutting you off because I'm satisfied with your response and we're moving on. He made me very nervous but he was really nice and we talked about things that I didn't know would be as interesting to an interviewer, like my interest in dance and his interest in singing - we both like to perform. Weird connection.

I was especially excited when he told me that my letter of recommendation from my favorite professor in college should have awarded me acceptance to medical school, but then of course he reminded me that unfortunately the process didn't work like that and since my freshman year and sophomore year grades were not at all impressive that he was unsure if the committee would be able to get past it, but he said he was in my corner. I was soo happy.

I called the office on Friday and found out that my application had gone to and come out of committee on Thursday. And of course, I can't know the decision until the 15th of next month. I am hopeful but I know that the class is full already so until accepted students decide to go elsewhere, I have to wait, "super alternate" or not. This is such a humbling process and I really hope that I get in. If anyone has been or is in the same position please let me know. Also is there a facebook page for admitted students? I'm just curious to see who has been admitted and where they are living 🙂

Thanks for the reply...I'm sooo late. I couldn't find this post for the longest time. I had the interview...and I think it went well. I PRAY that I get accepted!!!

Can you tell me where most of the freshman live?? What apartments r most popular/affordable?

I'm so bad at this whole forum thing...I tried to respond to Kaji but I guess this will just be ANOTHER post added generally. Kaji if you're reading I'm talking to you 🙂

Hey guys! I have a question...it might come off as a little naive.

I'm trying to decide if I want to stay in the Howard Plaza Towers or find an apartment somewhere. My question is, how do medical school students pay for these apartments? Do they use govenment loans or do they work?

Welcome sdp32!! I'm in the same position as you. My application is out of committe also and I won't know my status until the 15th of next month. The facebook group is only available to those students who have been accepted. If I'm correct, I'm pretty sure they have a list of students who have been accepted and they verify your name if you request to join the group. Hopefully we'll be able to be on the other side soon 😀

How do you know that the class is full? Did they tell you when you called?

Great to hear about your interview experience, and I hope that both of us get an acceptance to Howard! I hope that as our file goes through the committee, the committee looks at our application and decides to accept us to this wonderful school. Hopefully, as some applicants make their final decisions as to where to attend, it may open more spots for applicants to get accepted. Indeed it is a humbling process, I hope as well that I get accepted. I'm also in the same position of waiting to hear back, and I hope and pray that we hear the words acceptance! Once I get accepted here, I know that this is where I want to be and then I'll see where I will be living in DC! 🙂

When I called on Friday that is what I was told. But I was also told not to worry because by May 15th a number of spots will be open and those who are waiting and even those still interviewing will have a good chance of being accepted.

I'm not a medical student, but the financial part works out the same way as in undergrad, so loans are available for housing. I do know that working while in medical school is discouraged due to the time needed for everything.

Not taking into account scholarships and grants, students will borrow at least the cost of tuition. Then, they will borrow up to the total cost of attendance. The total cost of attendance includes the cost of tuition + housing, food, transportation, etc. The amount you borrow beyond cost of tuition is highly variable. It can depend if you have roommates, if you have a car, or if you have a rich uncle sending you money.

By looking at the average indebtedness at any medical school most students do not borrow the total cost of attendance every year. Here is a link to how much in loans you can borrow at HUCM if needed. http://medicine.howard.edu/finance/costs.htm

Thanks sdp32! The countdown is on until May 15th.

Have a safe and productive week SDNers!!! :biglove:

Congratz sdp32 on finishing the interview! Dr. Callender is a great man and I'm glad it went well 🙂. To answer your question, we did create a facebook page (Howard University College of Medicine Class of 2016) for you guys, however, you can only join once you have received your acceptance. But I just wanted to let you guys know that there is one! 🙂 All of luck to you and everyone else waiting!🙂

Congratulations to all those receiving interview invites! It's never too late with HUCM and if you sincerely chase your dream, they will grant you an opportunity to realize your dream. I'm sure you will love your interview day. Good luck and let us know if you have any questions.

Congrats on the new acceptances! I hope to join you all this July so please keep the rest of us in your prayers!

For those who've been accepted, do you mind sharing when you interviewed and if/when you got the "Out of Committee" email? THANKS!

MWB!! My mind actually ran off on you the other day because I know we interviewed around the same time. I think you went the week before me if I remember correctly. Did you get the out of committee email? I too am hoping for good news and praying for an acceptance to HUCM.

Hey Guys,

This is the first time I am posting on this thread. I just recently received an interview invite at HUCM for the end of this month. I have been going through the interview feedback but do you guys have any suggestions based on your experiences?? Thanks for the help!!

Hey Donsingh, congrats with the invite, and for the interview, the best advice is be yourself! Hope it goes good! 🙂

I hope that we will join you guys!! 🙂

Could anyone comment on what the "Howard supplemental questionnaire" entails on the interview day? Thank you!

Thanks for the support and advice! Congrats and good luck to everyone else who received and interview!

I'm sooooo ready to hear a flux of acceptances from the people on this thread soon......

Hello everyone! Kinda new to this thread but I have a quick question: is it advisable to contact Ms Walk about my status after my interview with the school? If yes, which is better, email or phone call?

Just like management says it. You'll do fine and good luck!!! 🙂

Thank you thank you! I spent awhile last night re-scanning several pages of this thread. Looking forward to it - I'll keep everyone posted. (You guys do the same!) 👍

Hi dakangel! Welcome :welcome:

I would only contact Ms. Walk if the date that she said you would hear a response has passed, and you haven't heard any feedback. It took about a month post interview for me to get an out of committee email, but they were off for a week for Spring break. It's such a nerve wrecking process. If that date has passed already then I would suggest giving her a call. Hope this helped 🙂

Yep I think in a previous thread someone mentioned that it's main purpose is to make sure that you're literate, so they questions aren't anything too serious. Good luck on your interview!:luck::xf::luck:

Hi Everyone,
I have been a silent reader of the posts on this thread. And I just wanted to say "thank you!" to all of the kind and encouraging words. The wait to hear back from Howard post interview has been super nerve racking. I really hope that we will all hear some positive news soon.
warm regards,
