Hi everyone!

I have been following this thread for a couple weeks and decided to make an account and join in. Still waiting on an interview invite as well. :-/ Hoping to get some good news from Howard soon!

Hi Millie. Welcome to the thread.

So...what's your GPA? Your MCAT? LOR or Committee? Did you make above 1500 on your SAT? What was your 6th grade english GPA? Did your dog learn how to fetch yet? See, I have a 54 MCAT, 4.001 GPA, and I can speak Chinese backwards.....

J/K lol. See, here, we all support each other, and we don't play those immature games, cause we know how hard the journey to this point has been, and we respect it. So I hope to hear some some good news from you soon, as well as from everyone else.

Can anyone give me a quick run down of interview day?

Also I heard that there is a writing prompt at the beginning of the interview day. Can anyone remember what the prompt(s) were?

I'm planning on applying to schools next year and am curious about the historically black college status. Are most of the matriculants to the med school African American or is the graduate school like most graduate programs i.e. very diverse? I am white but love DC and want to work in underserved communities, which is why I am looking at Howard.

Hey Millie,

I haven't heard much either. Still waiting on an interview. God willing, I hope we hear some good news! I hear they extend interviews up thru March and April. Can anyone confirm this?

I think most of the class is diverse. I think the class is about 40-60% African American. HUMC is a wonderful school and you will love this school. I know I love this school! 😍

Hey RocknRho and Millie. I hope we do hear good news soon. The wait can be tough and painful 🙁, but we hope to be stronger in our hopes and prayers. They do extend interviews from March to upto April depending on the cycle. According to an email we received in December that was sent to everyone, it mentioned that applicants whom they will not consider may hear starting from March about it. My best advice is keep up your hopes and prayers. Prayers are beautiful and powerful. Also remind yourself again and again why Howard? And include that in your prayers. I pray that our Most Compassionate and Most Merciful God, provide us a way! 🙂 -ma
 
I finally got the chance to speak to Ms Walk earlier today. I got so nervous that I forgot to speak properly lol! She was still very nice and warm on the phone. Hopefully, I won't be as nervous next time and actually be myself!

I inquired about the status of my app and was told I'm still being considered. Did anyone else hear this? Current students, perhaps? Thanks!
 
After sending in an update letter by email, has anyone received confirmation that admissions received it? Has anyone had success in regards to update letters? I've sent two over the past several months...

Good to hear MWB! Last time I spoke with Ms. Walk was in December. I was nervous as well! But she is a nice and great lady. Hope the considerations turn to interviews soon! 🙂

I hope so too....God will open those doors, lets keep believing in Him. I truly praise God for this forum because everyone is so warm and friendly...truly reflects on the kind of people that apply and attend Howard College of Medicine and man...you all are truly blessed 🙂 ...can't wait to be a student there (claiming a spot in Jesus Name!)

Went there today, shared a half pitcher of the swirl margarita...got home at 5 and the next thing I know I woke up at 10. I am getting old...smh
I did enjoy my cuban steak tho..hmmm so good.

WORD. I went out drinking with my fellow teachers this evening...those dudes can put it away. Came home at 6, work up at midnight. I'm getting old, lol. Next time I find myself in DC (interview or not) I shall have to check out that plaza.

The way interview day goes is:

1. information session around 8am-9
2. lecture viewing approx 9-10
3. interviews 10-11:30
4. Lunch 11:30-12:30
5. Tour 12:30-1:30
6. 1:30-2 wrap up of the day...

Although this day may not be the exact line up of the day (since some ppl are actually interviewing at different times throughout the day) it is a good gauge of how your day will go during the interview day.... I forgot to add:

1a. Smiling, super excited as you walk in the front door at HUCM
6. Exit HUCM but leave your heart behind (sounds super cheesy but you'll understand after your interview day lol)

approx 60-70% after some form of Black (AA, African, Caribbean, etc) and the remaining 30-40% are a mixture of Latino, White, Asian (Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, etc), of Middle Eastern or Southern Asian Decent (Indian, Pakistani, Iranian, Bengali, Persian, etc), and so on.

Although the school is predominantly black, I still feel as though it is very diverse.

Im not sure if they send "confirmation of receipt" emails so I would try giving them a call to confirm that they have received it... I say that not knowing how many times you may call them previously lol.

As long as you do not call too much already (more then 2 times per month) since this can actually be detrimental to your chances of getting in. If that is not the case then it would not hurt to call and ask about those update letters and to find out where you application is at in the process.

You guys have convinced me to try out Lauriol Plaza. I've never heard of it but I'll sure ask my DMV classmates about it!... Ok I have to get back to studying lol.

Yeah, I uh, definitely called two weeks ago and then again this past Friday. The lady on the phone did not sound happy with me. :scared: I shall renew my efforts at patience...it just conflicts with my desire to let them know that I have continued interest in the school and are eager to hear from them.

I have one acceptance so far and still waiting to hear good news from other places I interviewed at. I am a living testimony of God's faithfulness and I just wanted to encourage all of you. I just want to say how I absolutely love all the positive energy that exudes from all the people in this forum. I know that this whole application mess can make some of us very angry/sad/nervous/nauseous/etc and it helps knowing that there are people here who are genuinely positive and really wish for the success of everyone involved. Wishing the best for everyone who is in the waiting game (either for interviews and/or for acceptances).

Gotta stay positive man...everything in its own time. Plus what good is stressing yourself out gonna do except ruin your skin and grey your hair and give your irritable bowel syndrome?
I may be an older applicant (28 in a couple weeks), but I am tooo fly for gray hairs...lol
