Oh wise PlayUltimate, I have an interview at MSU at the East Lansing site, but I don't know the area and need to get to the airport at Grand Rapids (GRR) after my interview. Is there an Amtrak nearby (East Lansing), and is the station safe at night?

Sorry for the questions, but I've been mugged before (and I was playing it safe so go fig...) and have been at gunpoint. Don't want to go through that again, especially in an unfamiliar area...

Sorry for the uber later reply! I have had my head buried in books. I don't know much about east lansing, but it seems like others were able to give you some good advice.

Good to luck to everyone with upcoming interviews! I will be interviewing applicants in GR 😀 soon. Let me know if you have any questions about CHM.

Congrats
I got the much awaited invite today as well. 🙂
Scheduled for Nov 10th at GR.

Congrats on the new interview invites! I'm crossing my fingers that MSU will give me a chance... It's a bit of a reach for me.

Good luck to everyone else! I'm excited to check out this thread on the 15th. 🙂

Does anybody know if there is a way to get to Lansing from Detroit airport besides flying and renting a car? Thank you so much.

hey guys, got an II for 11/17. 😀😀
Does anyone know if they only interview on Thursdays? I ask because I have an interview in NY on 11/14, and I really don't want to fly back and forth from CA twice (or miss that much school/work).
any thoughts? just tough it and deal?

I say tough it and deal. 2 trips for you!!!

Haha I wouldn't mind two trips really except my credit card is just dying! I also wouldn't mind taking one flight and visiting family on my two off days 🙂

But yes, I think I will keep the original dates. Don't want to chance anything!

I think some grand rapids interviews are on tuesdays. I might be wrong though..

Hi,

I am a Canadian, 3.76 GPA, 31Q MCAT (21Q first time), solid EC's but no research publications and will likely submit my PRIMARY application this sunday. Do I still have a decent shot here?

There are several Canadians in our class. Last year, I submitted my application near the end of the cycle (late MCAT), so yes, it's possible. No one can comment on what kind of shot/chance you have though.

While this may change, there is only one Tuesday interview date in GR, and it was in September.

So,
just to clear a couple of things up,
MSU CHM interviews primarily on Thursdays and we rotate sites, GR one week and EL the next. They do this to utilize both sites and because there are only so many admissions staff people to go around and we don't have the resources to interview at both sites each week. (only one asst dean of admissions and he gives a presentation on each interview day - a must see!!)

I would also recommend the Flyer,

Emilyyyy
CHM will usually work with applicants to rearrange an interview for a different week (but not always able) but different day I don't think is going to happen. I think there was a Tuesday during EDP interviews but I don't think there are any more, its Thursdays the rest of the way. Take the time and visit family, don't sweat the money, just think of the $$$ you will spend to go to med school and consider it money well spent on the interview trail.

Getting in late hurts at most schools but not so much here MSU CHM. Admissions purposely leaves spots open throughout the cycle so that the last of the acceptances are sent out after the last interviews in March so timing should not hurt you too much here.
Just as an aside, I think there are 2 or 3 Canadians in our class this year.

throw up any more questions and we (me or acoustic or playultimate) will answer if possible, good luck to all and maybe we will see some of you on the coming Thursdays, like tomorrow!

And most of all, RELAX - CHM interviews are ZERO stress so try to just enjoy the visit and the free lunch!

GR is awesome, I love this city! It's the perfect blend of low density yet always something going on downtown for me. I couldn't really tell you if any particular lecture was remote, because I don't go to class haha. I guess that's something I can tell the applicants:

Lectures are all recorded and you can usually watch them online within minutes after it ending. Attendance is only required at certain events, like when patients are presented to us. I actually don't know what some of the lecturers sound like at non-2x speed haha.

All the simulation stuff is finished, but we've only used the standard exam rooms for the patient interviews.

acoustic - too funny, all those lectures must sound like everyone is hyped up on helium!

Not only can you watch them right after they finish, but you can also watch them live from home. Even though I live less than a 10 minute walk from secchia I still watch over half of the lectures live from home. Then when I head to school around noon it feels like my day is just starting. So today for instance, when I hit up the anatomy lab from 1-5pm and then hibernated in the quiet study room from 5-11pm I think to myself "that wasn't too bad of a day..."

Also, its a bit weird to not be able to see the professors when you stream the lectures. However, tt's funny hearing the questions come in from different sites. Like today with the case study on von gierks disease. I was cracking up!

First off I'd like to say Congrats to those that have already been accepted. Secondly, I thought I'd chime in on the discussion here....I am an MS2 student at MSU CHM. I'll try and work alongside the others on here to offer some solid advice (without repeating too often) to you all that are in the application process. Heads up for those that have interviewed prior to today- the admissions committee meets on Tuesday nights....this coming Tuesday is one of those nights 🙂 Best of luck to you all

I haven't heard anything from MSU since being complete in mid-July. It seems others have received rej/holds/ii. Should I be concerned, or keep riding it out? Anyone else in the same situation?

I'm right there with you, friend. Complete 8/19 and that was my last update. I'm just trying to remain patient and grateful I have yet to be rejected or placed on hold. Good luck.

There are MANY applications that have been received thus far and I know the Admissions office goes through them one-by-one. There are actually TWO people that review EVERY application prior to potentially proposing it for an interview. Long story short- its a long and tedious process.

To answer your question- keep believing! The season goes until May so whether you get in tomorrow or you get in May15th...you're in.

Hope this helps and Good Luck!

They explicitly stated that on my interview day.

Now I don't know what they do in practice... but I don't think she was lying to me.

I think mine was probably a special case:
Because I have an acceptance to their DO school, my cycle has effectively been cut in half. I have to give MSUCOM a decision by December 1, so I sent all of the schools to which I applied an email saying that, and got really quick feedback from a lot of them. So...if they were interested in interviewing me at all they had to do it in a timeframe that would give me a decision before Dec. 1.

On the same lines... I have an interview at U of M next month and it is a 8+ hour trip for me one-way (yooper love!). Do you guys think if I sent them an email explaining that they would consider offering me an interview during that time frame?

I guess it's worth a shot--I don't think their response to me was a coincidence. "In the area" notices are really hit or miss with schools though so I would do some digging first to see how MSU feels about them. These kinds of things aren't really "updates."

Example: I have an interview at a school in another state at the end of the month. I know that another school is inviting me for an interview, and ideally, I would like to knock them both out with one trip, but a faculty member at the school that hasn't given me the "formal" invite yet told me not to send an "in the area" email, because that school looks poorly upon them. So, I'll be making two trips out to that state.

Okay Michigan residents, need some travel advice! 😛

So my II in 11/17, so I'm going to fly out on the 16th, and I was going to try to fly into Lansing. Problem is...$600 one way ticket 👎. So then I read on here about the Michigan Flyer that commutes between airports, but I wouldn't be able to get back to the Detroit airport after the interview since it ends after the last bus leaves.

Any other ways to get between airports at reasonable prices?

Did you look into flying out of Grand Rapids (GRR)? It's easier and faster to get to from Lansing. Might be better flight options for you.

Fly into either GRR or DTW and rent a car (especially if you will be here one day before the interview).

I almost forgot about Flint (FNT) it's closer than both DTW and GRR although that probably has the same connection issues at Lansing. Worth checking out.

Interview invite. IS, complete 08/19. Very excited to be interviewing here, and grateful for the love from my state schools.

Ah, solid advice. Since I'm under 25, I thought I couldn't rent a car but just searched and realize I can with some companies. Thanks a bunch! 🙂

Been complete since 7/26 and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, not a word from them.

Kzoo kid, I hope I get put on that bandwagon soon. What day are you interviewing?

+1 as well... :eyebrow:

I put a lot of effort into this secondary as well. I have a lot of family in the Jackson area so it would be awesome to at least have a shot here.

I'm pulling for you. I'm not interviewing until December 1st. It's kind of nice to have seven weeks to prepare! Good luck, hope you hear something soon.

Thanks man! Good luck on the interview! Did you apply to COM too?

Thanks, I appreciate it. I did apply to COM, but have yet to hear from them. Would love some good news tomorrow. Best of luck getting an interview.
